As the range of tasks performed by a general vision system expands, executing multiple tasks accurately and efficiently in a single network has become an important and still open problem. Recent computer vision approaches address this problem by branching networks, or by a channel-wise modulation of the network feature-maps with task specific vectors. We present a novel architecture that uses a dedicated top-down control network to modify the activation of all the units in the main recognition network in a manner that depends on the selected task, image content, and spatial location. We show the effectiveness of our scheme by achieving significantly better results than alternative state-of-the-art approaches on four datasets. We further demonstrate our advantages in terms of task selectivity, scaling the number of tasks and interpretability.

Current deep learning approaches for multimodal fusion rely on bottom-up fusion of high and mid-level latent modality representations (late/mid fusion) or low level sensory inputs (early fusion). Models of human perception highlight the importance of top-down fusion, where high-level representations affect the way sensory inputs are perceived, i.e. cognition affects perception. These top-down interactions are not captured in current deep learning models. In this work we propose a neural architecture that captures top-down cross-modal interactions, using a feedback mechanism in the forward pass…

In recent years, we have seen tremendous progress in the field of object detection. Most of the recent improvements have been achieved by targeting deeper feedforward networks. However, many hard object categories such as bottle, remote, etc. require representation of fine details and not just coarse, semantic representations. But most of these fine details are lost in the early convolutional layers. What we need is a way to incorporate finer details from lower layers into the detection architecture. Skip connections have been proposed to combine high-level and low-level features, but we argue…

Robust perception relies on both bottom-up and top-down signals. Bottom-up signals consist of what's directly observed through sensation. Top-down signals consist of beliefs and expectations based on past experience and short-term memory, such as how the phrase `peanut butter and~...' will be completed. The optimal combination of bottom-up and top-down information remains an open question, but the manner of combination must be dynamic and both context and task dependent. To effectively utilize the wealth of potential top-down information available, and to prevent the cacophony of intermixed si…
Top-down information plays a central role in human perception, but plays relatively little role in many current state-of-the-art deep networks, such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). This work seeks to explore a path by which top-down information can have a direct impact within current deep networks. We explore this path by learning and using "generators" corresponding to the network internal effects of three types of transformation (each a restriction of a general affine transformation): rotation, scaling, and translation. We demonstrate how these learned generators can be used to tran…
An approach to clustering is presented that adapts the basic top-down induction of decision trees method towards clustering. To this aim, it employs the principles of instance based learning. The resulting methodology is implemented in the TIC (Top down Induction of Clustering trees) system for first order clustering. The TIC system employs the first order logical decision tree representation of the inductive logic programming system Tilde. Various experiments with TIC are presented, in both propositional and relational domains.
Biological vision adopts a coarse-to-fine information processing pathway, from initial visual detection and binding of salient features of a visual scene, to the enhanced and preferential processing given relevant stimuli. On the contrary, CNNs employ a fine-to-coarse processing, moving from local, edge-detecting filters to more global ones extracting abstract representations of the input. In this paper we reverse the feature extraction part of standard bottom-up architectures and turn them upside-down: We propose top-down networks. Our proposed coarse-to-fine pathway, by blurring higher frequ…

Decision tree learning is a popular approach for classification and regression in machine learning and statistics, and Bayesian formulations---which introduce a prior distribution over decision trees, and formulate learning as posterior inference given data---have been shown to produce competitive performance. Unlike classic decision tree learning algorithms like ID3, C4.5 and CART, which work in a top-down manner, existing Bayesian algorithms produce an approximation to the posterior distribution by evolving a complete tree (or collection thereof) iteratively via local Monte Carlo modificatio…

Human pose estimation in two-dimensional images videos has been a hot topic in the computer vision problem recently due to its vast benefits and potential applications for improving human life, such as behaviors recognition, motion capture and augmented reality, training robots, and movement tracking. Many state-of-the-art methods implemented with Deep Learning have addressed several challenges and brought tremendous remarkable results in the field of human pose estimation. Approaches are classified into two kinds: the two-step framework (top-down approach) and the part-based framework (bottom…
How to best integrate linguistic and perceptual processing in multi-modal tasks that involve language and vision is an important open problem. In this work, we argue that the common practice of using language in a top-down manner, to direct visual attention over high-level visual features, may not be optimal. We hypothesize that the use of language to also condition the bottom-up processing from pixels to high-level features can provide benefits to the overall performance. To support our claim, we propose a U-Net-based model and perform experiments on two language-vision dense-prediction tasks…
Extractive compression is a challenging natural language processing problem. This work contributes by formulating neural extractive compression as a parse tree transduction problem, rather than a sequence transduction task. Motivated by this, we introduce a deep neural model for learning structure-to-substructure tree transductions by extending the standard Long Short-Term Memory, considering the parent-child relationships in the structural recursion. The proposed model can achieve state of the art performance on sentence compression benchmarks, both in terms of accuracy and compression rate.

Deep neural networks have shown excellent prospects in speech separation tasks. However, obtaining good results while keeping a low model complexity remains challenging in real-world applications. In this paper, we provide a bio-inspired efficient encoder-decoder architecture by mimicking the brain's top-down attention, called TDANet, with decreased model complexity without sacrificing performance. The top-down attention in TDANet is extracted by the global attention (GA) module and the cascaded local attention (LA) layers. The GA module takes multi-scale acoustic features as input to extract …

How much does a CEO's personality impact the performance of their company? Management theory posits a great influence, but it is difficult to show empirically -- there is a lack of publicly available self-reported personality data of top managers. Instead, we propose a text-based personality regressor using crowd-sourced Myers--Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessments. The ratings have a high internal and external validity and can be predicted with moderate to strong correlations for three out of four dimensions. Providing evidence for the upper echelons theory, we demonstrate that the predict…
