With the rapid development of digital multimedia, video understanding has become an important field. For action recognition, temporal dimension plays an important role, and this is quite different from image recognition. In order to learn powerful feature of videos, we propose a Collaborative Temporal Modeling (CTM) block (Figure 1) to learn temporal information for action recognition. Besides a parameter-free identity shortcut, as a separate temporal modeling block, CTM includes two collaborative paths: a spatial-aware temporal modeling path, which we propose the Temporal-Channel Convolution Module (TCCM) with unshared parameters for each spatial position (H*W) to build, and a spatial-unaware temporal modeling path. CTM blocks can seamlessly be inserted into many popular networks to generate CTM Networks and bring the capability of learning temporal information to 2D CNN backbone networks, which only capture spatial information. Experiments on several popular action recognition datasets demonstrate that CTM blocks bring the performance improvements on 2D CNN baselines, and our method achieves the competitive results against the state-of-the-art methods. Code will be made publicly available.
Spatio-temporal feature learning is of central importance for action recognition in videos. Existing deep neural network models either learn spatial and temporal features independently (C2D) or jointly with unconstrained parameters (C3D). In this paper, we propose a novel neural operation which encodes spatio-temporal features collaboratively by imposing a weight-sharing constraint on the learnable parameters. In particular, we perform 2D convolution along three orthogonal views of volumetric video data, which learns spatial appearance and temporal motion cues respectively. By sharing the convo…

Recent years have witnessed the significant progress of action recognition task with deep networks. However, most of current video networks require large memory and computational resources, which hinders their applications in practice. Existing knowledge distillation methods are limited to the image-level spatial domain, ignoring the temporal and frequency information which provide structural knowledge and are important for video analysis. This paper explores how to train small and efficient networks for action recognition. Specifically, we propose two distillation strategies in the frequency …

Multi-view action recognition (MVAR) leverages complementary temporal information from different views to improve the learning performance. Obtaining informative view-specific representation plays an essential role in MVAR. Attention has been widely adopted as an effective strategy for discovering discriminative cues underlying temporal data. However, most existing MVAR methods only utilize attention to extract representation for each view individually, ignoring the potential to dig latent patterns based on mutual-support information in attention space. To this end, we propose a collaborative …

The prevalence of Internet of things (IoT) devices and abundance of sensor data has created an increase in real-time data processing such as recognition of speech, image, and video. While currently such processes are offloaded to the computationally powerful cloud system, a localized and distributed approach is desirable because (i) it preserves the privacy of users and (ii) it omits the dependency on cloud services. However, IoT networks are usually composed of resource-constrained devices, and a single device is not powerful enough to process real-time data. To overcome this challenge, we ex…

In this work, we consider the problem of cross-domain 3D action recognition in the open-set setting, which has been rarely explored before. Specifically, there is a source domain and a target domain that contain the skeleton sequences with different styles and categories, and our purpose is to cluster the target data by utilizing the labeled source data and unlabeled target data. For such a challenging task, this paper presents a novel approach dubbed CoDT to collaboratively cluster the domain-shared features and target-specific features. CoDT consists of two parallel branches. One branch aims…

The standard way of training video models entails sampling at each iteration a single clip from a video and optimizing the clip prediction with respect to the video-level label. We argue that a single clip may not have enough temporal coverage to exhibit the label to recognize, since video datasets are often weakly labeled with categorical information but without dense temporal annotations. Furthermore, optimizing the model over brief clips impedes its ability to learn long-term temporal dependencies. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a collaborative memory mechanism that encodes inf…

The intuitive use of spectral features are explained via circulant matrices. The proposed Spectral Collaborative Representation based Classification (SCRC) is able to recognize gestures with higher levels of accuracy for a fairly rich gesture set. The worst recognition result which is the best in the literature is obtained as 97.3\% among the four sets of the experiments for e…
In video-based action recognition, viewpoint variations often pose major challenges because the same actions can appear different from different views. We use the complementary RGB and Depth information from the RGB-D cameras to address this problem. The proposed technique capitalizes on the spatio-temporal information available in the two data streams to the extract action features that are largely insensitive to the viewpoint variations. We use the RGB data to compute dense trajectories that are translated to viewpoint insensitive deep features under a non-linear knowledge transfer model. Si…
DNN-based face recognition models require large centrally aggregated face datasets for training. However, due to the growing data privacy concerns and legal restrictions, accessing and sharing face datasets has become exceedingly difficult. We propose FedFace, a federated learning (FL) framework for collaborative learning of face recognition models in a privacy-aware manner. FedFace utilizes the face images available on multiple clients to learn an accurate and generalizable face recognition model where the face images stored at each client are neither shared with other clients nor the central…
Face recognition in collaborative learning videos presents many challenges. In collaborative learning videos, students sit around a typical table at different positions to the recording camera, come and go, move around, get partially or fully occluded. Furthermore, the videos tend to be very long, requiring the development of fast and accurate methods. We develop a dynamic system of recognizing participants in collaborative learning systems. We address occlusion and recognition failures by using past information about the face detection history. We address the need for detecting faces from dif…
Collaborative Representation Classification (CRC) for face recognition attracts a lot attention recently due to its good recognition performance and fast speed. Compared to Sparse Representation Classification (SRC), CRC achieves a comparable recognition performance with 10-1000 times faster speed. In this paper, we propose to ensemble several CRC models to promote the recognition rate, where each CRC model uses different and divergent randomly generated biologically-inspired features as the face representation. The proposed ensemble algorithm calculates an ensemble weight for each CRC model t…

Typical text spotters follow the two-stage spotting paradigm which detects the boundary for a text instance first and then performs text recognition within the detected regions. Despite the remarkable progress of such spotting paradigm, an important limitation is that the performance of text recognition depends heavily on the precision of text detection, resulting in the potential error propagation from detection to recognition. In this work, we propose the single shot Self-Reliant Scene Text Spotter v2 (SRSTS v2), which circumvents this limitation by decoupling recognition from detection whil…
We present a novel Discriminant Locality Preserving Projections (DLPP) algorithm named Collaborative Discriminant Locality Preserving Projection (CDLPP). In our algorithm, the discriminating power of DLPP are further exploited from two aspects. On the one hand, the global optimum of class scattering is guaranteed via using the between-class scatter matrix to replace the original denominator of DLPP. On the other hand, motivated by collaborative representation, an $L_2$-norm constraint is imposed to the projections to discover the collaborations of dimensions in the sample space. We apply our a…
Prediction of the action outcome is a new challenge for a robot collaboratively working with humans. With the impressive progress in video action recognition in recent years, fine-grained action recognition from video data turns into a new concern. Fine-grained action recognition detects subtle differences of actions in more specific granularity and is significant in many fields such as human-robot interaction, intelligent traffic management, sports training, health caring. Considering that the different outcomes are closely connected to the subtle differences in actions, fine-grained action r…
With the rapid development of digital imaging and communication technologies, image set based face recognition (ISFR) is becoming increasingly important. One key issue of ISFR is how to effectively and efficiently represent the query face image set by using the gallery face image sets. The set-to-set distance based methods ignore the relationship between gallery sets, while representing the query set images individually over the gallery sets ignores the correlation between query set images. In this paper, we propose a novel image set based collaborative representation and classification method…
Recently, table structure recognition has achieved impressive progress with the help of deep graph models. Most of them exploit single visual cues of tabular elements or simply combine visual cues with other modalities via early fusion to reason their graph relationships. However, neither early fusion nor individually reasoning in terms of multiple modalities can be appropriate for all varieties of table structures with great diversity. Instead, different modalities are expected to collaborate with each other in different patterns for different table cases. In the community, the importance of …
In this paper, we design a Collaborative-Hierarchical Sparse and Low-Rank (C-HiSLR) model that is natural for recognizing human emotion in visual data. Previous attempts require explicit expression components, which are often unavailable and difficult to recover. Instead, our model exploits the lowrank property over expressive facial frames and rescue inexact sparse representations by incorporating group sparsity. For the CK+ dataset, C-HiSLR on raw expressive faces performs as competitive as the Sparse Representation based Classification (SRC) applied on manually prepared emotions. C-HiSLR pe…
Smartphone based periocular recognition has gained significant attention from biometric research community because of the limitations of biometric modalities like face, iris etc. Most of the existing methods for periocular recognition employ hand-crafted features. Recently, learning based image representation techniques like deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) have shown outstanding performance in many visual recognition tasks. CNN needs a huge volume of data for its learning, but for periocular recognition only limited amount of data is available. The solution is to use CNN pre-trained on…

By coding a query sample as a sparse linear combination of all training samples and then classifying it by evaluating which class leads to the minimal coding residual, sparse representation based classification (SRC) leads to interesting results for robust face recognition. It is widely believed that the l1- norm sparsity constraint on coding coefficients plays a key role in the success of SRC, while its use of all training samples to collaboratively represent the query sample is rather ignored. In this paper we discuss how SRC works, and show that the collaborative representation mechanism us…

To have a robot actively supporting a human during a collaborative task, it is crucial that robots are able to identify the current action in order to predict the next one. Common approaches make use of high-level knowledge, such as object affordances, semantics or understanding of actions in terms of pre- and post-conditions. These approaches often require hand-coded a priori knowledge, time- and resource-intensive or supervised learning techniques. We propose to reframe this problem as an appearance-based place recognition problem. In our framework, we regard sequences of visual images of hu…
This paper proposes a novel 4D Facial Expression Recognition (FER) method using Collaborative Cross-domain Dynamic Image Network (CCDN). Given a 4D data of face scans, we first compute its geometrical images, and then combine their correlated information in the proposed cross-domain image representations. The acquired set is then used to generate cross-domain dynamic images (CDI) via rank pooling that encapsulates facial deformations over time in terms of a single image. For the training phase, these CDIs are fed into an end-to-end deep learning model, and the resultant predictions collaborate…

For example, more than half of the weights of AlexNet are stored in the first fully-connected layer (4,096 filters). We formulate the function of a convolutional layer as learning a large visual vocabulary, and propose an alternative way, namely Deep Collaborative Learning (DCL), to reduce the computational complexity.…

To learn rep…
We consider the problem of robust face recognition in which both the training and test samples might be corrupted because of disguise and occlusion. Performance of conventional subspace learning methods and recently proposed sparse representation based classification (SRC) might be degraded when corrupted training samples are provided. In addition, sparsity based approaches are time-consuming due to the sparsity constraint. To alleviate the aforementioned problems to some extent, in this paper, we propose a discriminative low-rank representation method for collaborative representation-based (D…

The training scheme of deep face recognition has greatly evolved in the past years, yet it encounters new challenges in the large-scale data situation where massive and diverse hard cases occur. Especially in the range of low false accept rate (FAR), there are various hard cases in both positives (intra-class) and negatives (inter-class). In this paper, we study how to make better use of these hard samples for improving the training. The literature approaches this by margin-based formulation in either positive logit or negative logits. However, the correlation between hard positive and hard ne…
Presence of noise in the labels of large scale facial expression datasets has been a key challenge towards Facial Expression Recognition (FER) in the wild. During early learning stage, deep networks fit on clean data. Then, eventually, they start overfitting on noisy labels due to their memorization ability, which limits FER performance. This work proposes an effective training strategy in the presence of noisy labels, called as Consensual Collaborative Training (CCT) framework. CCT co-trains three networks jointly using a convex combination of supervision loss and consistency loss, without ma…
In action understanding in indoor, we have to recognize human pose and action considering privacy. Therefore, we propose a new task for human instance segmentation from invisible information, especially airborne ultrasound, for action recognition. To perform instance segmentation from invisible information, we first convert sound waves to reflected sound directional images (sound images). Although the sound images can roughly identify the location of a person, the detailed sh…

The model of low-dimensional manifold and sparse representation are two well-known concise models that suggest each data can be described by a few characteristics. Manifold learning is usually investigated for dimension reduction by preserving some expected local geometric structures from the original space to a low-dimensional one. The structures are generally determined by using pairwise distance, e.g., Euclidean distance. Alternatively, sparse representation denotes a data point as a linear combination of the points from the same subspace. In practical applications, however, the nearby poin…

This research features a deep-learning based framework to address the problem of matching a given face sketch image against a face photo database. The problem of photo-sketch matching is challenging because 1) there is large modality gap between photo and sketch, and 2) the number of paired training samples is insufficient to train deep learning based networks. To circumvent the problem of large modality gap, our approach is to use an intermediate latent space between the two modalities. We effectively align the distributions of the two modalities in this latent space by employing a bidirectio…
