The number of active users of Wi-Fi Direct Device-to-Device file sharing applications on Android has exceeded 1.8 billion. Wi-Fi Direct, also known as Wi-Fi P2P, is commonly used for peer-to-peer, high-speed file transfer between mobile devices, as well as a close proximity connection mode for wireless cameras, network printers, TVs and other IoT and mobile devices. For its end users, such type of direct file transfer does not incur cellular data charges. However, despite the popularity of such applications, we observe that the software vendors tend to prioritize the ease of user flow over the security in their implementations, which leads to serious security flaws. We perform a comprehensive security analysis in the context of security and usability and report our findings in the form of 17 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) which have been disclosed to the corresponding vendors. To address the similar flaws at the early stage of the application design, we propose a joint consideration of security and usability for such applications and their protocols that can be visualized in form of a customised User Journey Map (UJM).
Observation Resilient Authentication Schemes (ORAS) are a class of shared secret challenge-response identification schemes where a user mentally computes the response via a cognitive function to authenticate herself such that eavesdroppers cannot readily extract the secret. Security evaluation of ORAS generally involves quantifying information leaked via observed challenge-response pairs. However, little work has evaluated information leaked via human behavior while interacting with these schemes. A common way to achieve observation resilience is by including a modulus operation in the cogniti…
In a one-way secret key agreement (OW-SKA) protocol in source model, Alice and Bob have private samples of two correlated variables X and Y that are partially leaked to Eve through Z, and use a single message from Alice to Bob to obtain a secret shared key. We propose an efficient secure OW-SKA when the sent message can be tampered with by an active adversary. The construction follows the approach of an existing OW-SKA with security against passive adversaries, and uses a specially designed secure Message Authentication Code (MAC) that is secure when the key is partially leaked, to achieve sec…
We treat secret key extraction when the eavesdropper has correlated quantum states. We propose quantum privacy amplification theorems different from Renner's, which are based on quantum conditional Rényi entropy of order 1+s. Using those theorems, we derive an exponential decreasing rate for leaked information and the asymptotic equivocation rate, which have not been derived hitherto in the quantum setting.
We derive a new upper bound for Eve's information in secret key generation from a common random number without communication. This bound improves on Bennett et al(1995)'s bound based on the Rényi entropy of order 2 because the bound obtained here uses the Rényi entropy of order $1+s$ for $s \in [0,1]$. This bound is applied to a wire-tap channel. Then, we derive an exponential upper bound for Eve's information. Our exponent is compared with Hayashi(2006)'s exponent. For the additive case, the bound obtained here is better. The result is applied to secret key agreement by public discussion.
Authenticated Key Exchange (AKE) protocols represent an important cryptographic mechanism that enables several parties to communicate securely over an open network. Elashry, Mu and Susilo proposed in 2015 an Identity Based Authenticated Key Exchange (IBAKE) protocol where different parties establish secure communication by means of their public identities. The authors also introduced a new security notion for IBAKE protocols called resiliency, that is, if a shared secret between a group of parties is compromised or leaked, they can generate another completely new shared secret without the need…
Leaked secrets, such as passwords and API keys, in codebases were responsible for numerous security breaches. Existing heuristic techniques, such as pattern matching, entropy analysis, and machine learning, exist to detect and alert developers of such leaks. Heuristics, however, naturally exhibit false positives, which require triaging and can lead to developer frustration. We propose to use known production secrets as a source of ground truth for sniffing secret leaks in codebases. We develop techniques for using known secrets to sniff whole codebases and continuously sniff differential code …
Malware writers frequently try to hide the activities of their agents within tunnelled traffic. Within the Kill Chain model the infection time is often measured in seconds, and if the infection is not detected and blocked, the malware agent, such as a bot, will often then set up a secret channel to communicate with its controller. In the case of ransomware the communicated payload may include the encryption key used for the infected host to register its infection. As a malware infection can spread across a network in seconds, it is often important to detect its activities on the air, in memory…
Privacy preservation in distributed computations is an important subject as digitization and new technologies enable collection and storage of vast amounts of data, including private data belonging to individuals. To this end, there is a need for a privacy preserving computation framework that minimises the leak of private information during computations while being efficient enough for practical usage. This paper presents a step towards such a framework with the proposal of a real number secret sharing scheme that works directly on real numbers without the need for conversion to integers whic…
The IoT (Internet of Things) technology has been widely adopted in recent years and has profoundly changed the people's daily lives. However, in the meantime, such a fast-growing technology has also introduced new privacy issues, which need to be better understood and measured. In this work, we look into how private information can be leaked from network traffic generated in the smart home network. Although researchers have proposed techniques to infer IoT device types or user behaviors under clean experiment setup, the effectiveness of such approaches become questionable in the complex but re…
