We present new observations, carried out with IRAM NOEMA, of the atomic neutral carbon transitions [CI](1-0) at 492 GHz and [CI](2-1) at 809 GHz of GN20, a well-studied star-bursting galaxy at $z=4.05$. The high luminosity line ratio [CI](2-1)/[CI](1-0) implies an excitation temperature of $48^{+14}_{-9}$ K, which is significantly higher than the apparent dust temperature of $T_{\rm d}=33\pm2$ K ($β=1.9$) derived under the common assumption of an optically thin far-infrared dust emission, but fully consistent with $T_{\rm d}=52\pm5$ K of a general opacity model where the optical depth ($τ$) reaches unity at a wavelength of $λ_0=170\pm23$ $μ$m. Moreover, the general opacity solution returns a factor of $\sim 2\times$ lower dust mass and, hence, a lower molecular gas mass for a fixed gas-to-dust ratio, than with the optically thin dust model. The derived properties of GN20 thus provide an appealing solution to the puzzling discovery of starbursts appearing colder than main-sequence galaxies above $z>2.5$, in addition to a lower dust-to-stellar mass ratio that approaches the physical value predicted for starburst galaxies.
Post-starburst galaxies are typically considered to be a transition population, en route to the red sequence after a recent quenching event. Despite this, recent observations have shown that these objects typically have large reservoirs of cold molecular gas. In this paper we study the star-forming gas properties of a large sample of post-starburst galaxies selected from the cosmological, hydrodynamical EAGLE simulations. These objects resemble observed high-mass post-starburst galaxies both spectroscopically and in terms of their space density, stellar mass distribution and sizes. We find tha…
We present the evolution of dust and molecular gas properties in a sample of 11 $z\sim0.03$ starburst to post-starburst (PSB) galaxies selected to span an age sequence from ongoing starburst to 1 Gyr after the starburst ended. All PSBs harbour significant molecular gas and dust reservoirs and residual star formation, indicating that complete quenching of the starburst due to exhaustion or expulsion of gas has not occurred during this timespan. As the starburst ages, we observe a clear decrease in the star-formation efficiency, molecular gas and SFR surface density, and effective dust temperatu…
Our three-dimensional hydro-dynamical simulations of starbursts examine the formation of superbubbles over a range of driving luminosities and mass loadings that determine superbubble growth and wind velocity. From this we determine the relationship between the velocity of a galactic wind and the power of the starburst. We find a threshold for the formation of a wind, above which the speed of the wind is not affected by grid resolution or the temperature floor of our radiative cooling. We investigate the effect two different temperature floors in our radiative cooling prescription have on wind…
Observations and simulations have demonstrated that star formation in galaxies must be actively suppressed to prevent the formation of over-massive galaxies. Galactic outflows driven by stellar feedback or supermassive black hole accretion are often invoked to regulate the amount of cold molecular gas available for future star formation, but may not be the only relevant quenching processes in all galaxies. We present the discovery of vast molecular tidal features extending up to 64 kpc outside of a massive z=0.646 post-starburst galaxy that recently concluded its primary star-forming episode. …
We report the detection of CO($J$=2$\to$1) emission from three massive dusty starburst galaxies at $z$$>$5 through molecular line scans in the NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) CO Luminosity Density at High Redshift (COLDz) survey. Redshifts for two of the sources, HDF 850.1 ($z$=5.183) and AzTEC-3 ($z$=5.298), were previously known. We revise a previous redshift estimate for the third source GN10 ($z$=5.303), which we have independently confirmed through detections of CO $J$=1$\to$0, 5$\to$4, 6$\to$5, and [CII] 158 $μ$m emission with the VLA and the NOrthern Extended Milllimeter Arr…
Starburst galaxies at the peak of cosmic star formation are among the most extreme starforming engines in the universe, producing stars over ~100 Myr. The star formation rates of these galaxies, which exceed 100 $M_\odot$ per year, require large reservoirs of cold molecular gas to be delivered to their cores, despite strong feedback from stars or active galactic nuclei. Starburst galaxies are therefore ideal targets to unravel the critical interplay between this feedback and the growth of a galaxy. The methylidyne cation, CH$^+$, is a most useful molecule for such studies because it cannot for…
We present Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations of 44 GHz continuum and CO J=2-1 line emission in BR1202-0725 at z=4.7 (a starburst galaxy and quasar pair) and BRI1335-0417 at z=4.4 (also hosting a quasar). With the full 8 GHz bandwidth capabilities of the upgraded VLA, we study the (rest-frame) 250 GHz thermal dust continuum emission for the first time along with the cold molecular gas traced by the Low-J CO line emission. The measured CO J=2-1 line luminosities of BR1202-0725 are L'(CO) = (8.7+/-0.8)x10^10 K km/s pc^2 and L'(CO) = (6.0+/-0.5)x10^10 K km/s pc^2 for the submm gal…
Using NOEMA and ALMA 3mm line scans, we measure spectroscopic redshifts of six new dusty galaxies at 3.5<z<4.2 by solidly detecting [CI](1-0) and CO transitions. The sample was selected from the COSMOS and GOODS-North super-deblended catalogs with FIR photometric redshifts z>6, based on template IR spectrum energy distribution (SED) from known submillimeter galaxies at z=4--6. Dust SED analyses explain the photo-z overestimate from seemingly cold dust temperatures (Td) and steep Rayleigh-Jeans (RJ) slopes, providing additional examples of cold dusty galaxies impacted by the Cosmic Microwave Ba…
We study the shape and evolution of the star formation main sequence in three independently developed semi-analytic models of galaxy formation. We focus, in particular, on the characterization of the model galaxies that are significantly above the main sequence, and that can be identified with galaxies classified as `starburst' in recent observational work. We find that, in all three models considered, star formation triggered by merger events (both minor and major) contribute to only a very small fraction of the cosmic density of star formation. While mergers are associated to bursts of star …
One of the most prominent features of galaxy clusters is the presence of a dominant population of massive ellipticals in their cores. Stellar archaeology suggests that these gigantic beasts assembled most of their stars in the early Universe via starbursts. However, the role of dense environments and their detailed physical mechanisms in triggering starburst activities remain unknown. Here we report spatially resolved Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the CO $J= 3-2$ emission line, with a resolution of about 2.5 kiloparsecs, toward a forming galaxy cluster cor…
We use ALMA observations of CO(2-1) in 13 massive ($M_{\star}\gtrsim 10^{11} M_{\odot}$) post-starburst galaxies at $z\sim0.6$ to constrain the molecular gas content in galaxies shortly after they quench their major star-forming episode. The post-starburst galaxies in this study are selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic samples (DR14) based on their spectral shapes, as part of the SQuIGGLE program. Early results showed that two post-starburst galaxies host large H$_2$ reservoirs despite their low inferred star formation rates. Here we expand this analysis to a larger statist…
We present high-resolution (1".0) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of CO (1-0) and CO (2- 1) rotational transitions toward the nearby IR-luminous merger NGC 1614 supplemented with ALMA archival data of CO (3-2), and CO (6-5) transitions. The CO (6-5) emission arises from the starburst ring (central 590 pc in radius), while the lower-$J$ CO lines are distributed over the outer disk ($\sim$ 3.3 kpc in radius). Radiative transfer and photon dominated region (PDR) modeling reveal that the starburst ring has a single warmer gas component with more intense far-ultravi…
We have studied in detail a sample of 967 SPIRE sources with 5-sigma detections at 350 and 500 micron and associations with Spitzer-SWIRE 24 micron galaxies in the HerMES-Lockman survey area, fitting their mid- and far-infrared, and submillimetre, SEDs in an automatic search with a set of six infrared templates. For almost 300 galaxies we have modelled their SEDs individually to ensure the physicality of the fits. We confirm the need for the new cool and cold cirrus templates, and also of the young starburst template, introduced in earlier work. We also identify 109 lensing candidates via thei…

Recent observations have revealed that starburst galaxies can drive molecular gas outflows through stellar radiation pressure. Molecular gas is the phase of the interstellar medium from which stars form, so these outflows curtail stellar mass growth in galaxies. Previously known outflows, however, involve small fractions of the total molecular gas content and are restricted to sub-kiloparsec scales. It is also apparent that input from active galactic nuclei is in at least some cases dynamically important, so pure stellar feedback has been considered incapable of aggressively terminating star f…
We present far-IR photometry and infrared spectrum of the z=3.9114 quasar/starburst composite system APM 08279+5255 obtained using the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA)/HAWC+ and the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Spectrograph (IRS). We decompose the IR-to-radio spectral energy distribution (SED), sampled in 51 bands, using (i) a model comprised of two-temperature modified blackbodies (MBB) and radio power-laws and (ii) a semi-analytic model, which also accounts for emission from a clumpy torus. The latter is more realistic but requires a well-sampled SED, as possible …

The nuclei of merging galaxies are often deeply buried in dense layers of gas and dust. In these regions, gas outflows driven by starburst and AGN activity are believed to play a crucial role in the evolution of these galaxies. However, to fully understand this process it is essential to resolve the morphology and kinematics of such outflows. Using near-IR integral-field spectroscopy obtained with VLT/SINFONI, we detect a kpc-scale structure of high-velocity molecular hydrogen (H2) gas associated with the deeply buried secondary nucleus of the IR-luminous merger NGC3256. We show that this stru…
This study investigates the dynamical response of dark matter (DM) halos to recurrent starbursts in forming less-massive galaxies to solve the core-cusp problem. The gas, which is heated by supernova feedback after a starburst, expands and the star formation then terminates. This expanding gas loses energy by radiative cooling and then falls back toward the galactic center. Subsequently, the starburst is enhanced again. This cycle of expansion and contraction of the interstellar gas leads to a repetitive change in the gravitational potential of the gas. The resonance between DM particles and t…
Observations of low order CO transitions represent the most direct way to study galaxies' cold molecular gas, the fuel of star formation. Here we present the first detection of CO(2-1) in a galaxy lying on the main-sequence of star-forming galaxies at z>6. Our target, G09-83808 at z=6.03, has a short depletion time-scale of T_dep~50Myr and a relatively low gas fraction of M_gas/M_star=0.30 that contrasts with those measured for lower redshift main-sequence galaxies. We conclude that this galaxy is undergoing a starburst episode with a high star formation efficiency that might be the result of …
Green Pea galaxies are low-redshift starburst dwarf galaxies, with properties similar to those of the high-redshift galaxies that reionized the Universe. We report the first mapping of the spatial distribution of atomic hydrogen (HI) in and around a Green Pea, GP J0213+0056 at z=0.0399, using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). Like many Green Peas, GP J0213+0056 shows strong HI 21 cm emission in single-dish spectroscopy, strong Ly-alpha emission, and a high [OIII]$λ$5007/[OIII]$λ$3727 luminosity ratio, O32 $\approx$ 8.8, consistent with a high leakage of Lyman-continuum radiation. Our…
We investigate the dust-obscured star formation properties of the massive, X-ray selected galaxy cluster MACS J1931.8-2634 at $z$=0.352. Using far-infrared (FIR) imaging in the range 100-500$μ$m obtained with the \textit{Herschel} telescope, we extract 31 sources (2$σ$) within $r\sim$1 Mpc from the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). Among these sources we identify six cluster members for which we perform an analysis of their spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We measure total infrared luminosity (L$_{IR}$), star formation rate (SFR) and dust temperature. The BCG, with L$_{IR}$=1.4$\times$10$^{…
Over the past few years ALMA has detected dust-rich galaxies whose cold dust emission is spatially disconnected from the UV rest-frame emission. This represents a challenge for modeling their spectral energy distributions with codes based on an energy budget between the stellar and dust components. We want to verify the validity of energy balance modeling on a sample of galaxies observed from the UV to the sub-millimeter rest frame with ALMA and decipher what information can be reliably retrieved from the analysis of the full SED and from subsets of wavelengths. We select 17 sources at z~2 in …
Hot dust-obscured galaxies (Hot DOGs) are a new population recently discovered in the \wise All-Sky survey. Multiwavelength follow-up observations suggest that they are luminous, dust-obscured quasars at high redshift. Here we present the JCMT SCUBA-2 850 $μm$ follow-up observations of 10 Hot DOGs. Four out of ten Hot DOGs have been detected at $>3σ$ level. Based on the IR SED decomposition approach, we derive the IR luminosities of AGN torus and cold dust components. Hot DOGs in our sample are extremely luminous with most of them having $L_{\rm IR}^{\rm tot}>10^{14} L_\odot$. The torus emissi…
We present ALMA observations of cold dust and molecular gas in four high-luminosity, heavily reddened (A$_{\rm{V}} \sim 2.5-6$ mag) Type 1 quasars at $z\sim2.5$ with virial M$_{\rm{BH}} \sim 10^{10}$M$_\odot$, to test whether dusty, massive quasars represent the evolutionary link between submillimetre bright galaxies (SMGs) and unobscured quasars. All four quasars are detected in both the dust continuum and in the $^{12}$CO(3-2) line. The mean dust mass is 6$\times$10$^{8}$M$_\odot$ assuming a typical high redshift quasar spectral energy distribution (T=41K, $β$=1.95 or T=47K, $β$=1.6). The im…
Models of galaxy formation predict that gas accretion from the cosmic web is a primary driver of star formation over cosmic history. Except in very dense environments where galaxy mergers are also important, model galaxies feed from cold streams of gas from the web that penetrate their dark matter haloes. Although these predictions are unambiguous, the observational support has been indirect so far. Here we report spectroscopic evidence for this process in extremely metal-poor galaxies (XMPs) of the local Universe, taking the form of localized starbursts associated with gas having low metallic…
During five decades astronomers have been puzzled by the presence of strong absorption features including metal lines, observed in the optical and ultraviolet spectra of quasars, signalling in- and outflowing gas winds with relative velocities up to several thousands of km/sec. In particular the location of these winds - close to the quasar, further out in its host galaxy, or in its direct environment - and the possible impact on their surroundings have been issues of intense discussion and uncertainty. Using our Herschel Space Observatory data, we report a tendency for this so-called associat…
All measurements of cosmic star formation must assume an initial distribution of stellar masses -- the stellar initial mass function -- in order to extrapolate from the star-formation rate measured for typically rare, massive stars (> 8 Msun) to the total star-formation rate across the full stellar mass spectrum. The shape of the stellar initial mass function in various galaxy populations underpins our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies across cosmic time. Classical determinations of the stellar initial mass function in local galaxies are traditionally made at ultraviolet…
Quenched post-starburst galaxies (QPSBs) are a rare but important class of galaxies that show signs of rapid cessation or recent rejuvenation of star formation. A recent observation shows that about half of QPSBs have large amounts of cold gas. This molecular CO sample is, however, too small and is not without limitations. Our work aims to verify previous results by applying a new method to study a uniformly selected sample, more than 10 times larger. In particular, we present detailed analysis of H$α$/H$β$ ratios of face-on QPSBs at $z = 0.02 - 0.15$ and with $M_\star = 10^{10}-10^{11}\,M_\od…
I present a suite of three-dimensional simulations of the evolution of initially-hot material ejected by starburst-driven galaxy outflows. The simulations are conducted in a comoving frame that moves with the material, tracking atomic/ionic cooling, Compton cooling, and dust cooling and destruction. Compton cooling is most efficient of these processes, while the main role of atomic/ionic cooling is to enhance density inhomogeneities. Dust, on the other hand, has little effect on the outflow evolution, and is rapidly destroyed in all the simulations except the case with the smallest mass flux. …
We present high-resolution observations of the 880 $μ$m (rest-frame FIR) continuum emission in the z$=$4.05 submillimeter galaxy GN20 from the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI). These data resolve the obscured star formation in this unlensed galaxy on scales of 0.3$^{\prime\prime}$$\times$0.2$^{\prime\prime}$ ($\sim$2.1$\times$1.3 kpc). The observations reveal a bright (16$\pm$1 mJy) dusty starburst centered on the cold molecular gas reservoir and showing a bar-like extension along the major axis. The striking anti-correlation with the HST/WFC3 imaging suggests that the copious dust s…
We identify and characterize compact dwarf starburst (CDS) galaxies in the RESOLVE survey, a volume-limited census of galaxies in the local universe, to probe whether this population contains any residual ``blue nuggets,'' a class of intensely star-forming compact galaxies first identified at high redshift $z$. Our 50 low-$z$ CDS galaxies are defined by dwarf masses (stellar mass $M_* < 10^{9.5}$ M$_{\odot}$), compact bulged-disk or spheroid-dominated morphologies (using a quantitative criterion, $μ_Δ> 8.6$), and specific star formation rates above the defining threshold for high-$z$ blue nugg…
We report new observations toward the hyper-luminous dusty starbursting major merger ADFS-27 (z=5.655), using ATCA and ALMA. We detect CO 2-1, 8-7, 9-8, 10-9 and H2O(321-221) emission, and a P-Cygni-shaped OH+(11-01) absorption/emission feature. We also tentatively detect H2O(321-312) and OH+(12-01) emission and CH+(1-0) absorption. We find a total cold molecular mass of M_gas = (2.1+/-0.2) x 10^11 (alpha_CO/1.0) Msun. We also find that the excitation of the star-forming gas is overall moderate for a z>5 dusty starburst, which is consistent with its moderate dust temperature. A high density, h…
We utilize a Bayesian approach to fit the observed mid-IR-to-submm/mm spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 22 WISE-selected and submm-detected, hyperluminous hot dust-obscured galaxies. By adopting the Torus+GB model, we decompose the observed IR SEDs of Hot DOGs into torus and cold dust components. The main results are: 1) Hot DOGs in our submm-detected sample are hyperluminous, with torus emission dominating the IR energy output. However, cold dust emission is non-negligible, averagely contributing ~24% of total IR luminosity. 2) Compared to QSO and starburst SED templates, the median SED…
We analyze the three-dimensional shapes and kinematics of the young star cluster population forming in a high-resolution GRIFFIN project simulation of a metal-poor dwarf galaxy starburst. The star clusters, which follow a power-law mass distribution, form from the cold ISM phase with an IMF sampled with individual stars down to 4 solar masses at sub-parsec spatial resolution. Massive stars and their important feedback mechanisms are modelled in detail. The simulated clusters follow a surprisingly tight relation between the specific angular momentum and mass with indications of two sub-populati…
Several active galaxies show strong evidence for fast ($v_{\rm out} \sim 1000~{\rm km\,s}^{-1}$) massive ($\dot{M} =$ several $\times 1000~\msun\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$) gas outflows. Such outflows are expected on theoretical grounds once the central supermassive black hole reaches the mass set by the $M - σ$ relation, and may be what makes galaxies become red and dead. Despite their high velocities, which imply temperatures far above those necessary for molecule dissociation, the outflows contain large amounts of molecular gas. To understand this surprising result, we investigate the gas cooling and …
NGC 253 hosts the nearest nuclear starburst. Previous observations show a region rich in molecular gas, with dense clouds associated with recent star formation. We used ALMA to image the 350 GHz dust continuum and molecular line emission from this region at 2 pc resolution. Our observations reveal ~14 bright, compact (~2-3 pc FWHM) knots of dust emission. Most of these sources are likely to be forming super star clusters (SSCs) based on their inferred dynamical and gas masses, association with 36 GHz radio continuum emission, and coincidence with line emission tracing dense, excited gas. One s…

We present a comparative analysis of the $\rm CH^+$(1-0) and $\rm Ly α$ lines, observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and Keck telescope respectively, in the field of the submillimetre-selected galaxy (SMG) SMM\,J02399$-$0136 at $z\sim2.8$, which comprises a heavily obscured starburst galaxy and a broad absorption line quasar, immersed in a large $\rm Ly α$ nebula. This comparison highlights the critical role played by turbulence in channeling the energy across gas phases and scales, splitting the energy trail between hot/thermal and cool/turbulent phases in the circum-galacti…
The structures and dynamics of molecular, atomic, and ionized gases are studied around a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN) with a small ($2\times 10^6 M_\odot$) black hole using 3D radiation hydrodynamic simulations. We studied, for the first time, the non-equilibrium chemistry for the X-ray dominated region in the "radiation-driven fountain" (Wada 2012) with supernova feedback. A double hollow cone structure is naturally formed without postulating a thick "torus" around a central source. The cone is occupied with an inhomogeneous, diffuse ionized gas and surrounded by a geometrical…
The Dragonfly Galaxy (MRC0152-209), at redshift z~2, is one of the most vigorously star-forming radio galaxies in the Universe. What triggered its activity? We present ALMA Cycle 2 observations of cold molecular CO(6-5) gas and dust, which reveal that this is likely a gas-rich triple merger. It consists of a close double nucleus (separation ~4 kpc) and a weak CO-emitter at ~10 kpc distance, all of which have counterparts in HST/NICMOS imagery. The hyper-luminous starburst and powerful radio-AGN were triggered at this precoalescent stage of the merger. The CO(6-5) traces dense molecular gas in …
We present deep neutral hydrogen (HI) observations of the starburst/Seyfert galaxy NGC 3079 and its environment, obtained with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. Our observations reveal previously unknown components, both in HI emission and in absorption, that show that NGC 3079 is going through a hectic phase in its evolution. The HI disk appears much more extended than previously observed and is morphologically and kinematically lopsided on all scales with evidence for strong non-circular motions in the central regions. Our data reveal prominent gas streams encircling the entire galax…
Using ALMA, we report high angular-resolution observations of the redshift z=3.63 galaxy, G09v1.97, one of the most luminous strongly lensed galaxies discovered by the H-ATLAS survey. We present 0"2-0"4 resolution images of the rest-frame 188 and 419$μ$m dust continuum and the CO(6-5), H2O(211-202) and J=2 H2O+ line emission. We also report the detection of H$_2^{18}$O in this source. The dust continuum and molecular gas emission are resolved into a nearly complete ~1"5 diameter Einstein ring plus a weaker image in the center, which is caused by a special dual deflector lensing configuration. …
We present an initial result from the 12CO (J=1-0) survey of 79 galaxies in 62 local luminous and ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG and ULIRG) systems obtained using the 45 m telescope at the Nobeyama Radio Observatory. This is the systematic 12CO (J=1-0) survey of the Great Observatories All-sky LIRGs Survey (GOALS) sample. The molecular gas mass of the sample ranges 2.2 x 10^8 - 7.0 x 10^9 Msun within the central several kiloparsecs subtending 15" beam. A method to estimate a size of a CO gas distribution is introduced, which is combined with the total CO flux in the literature. The metho…
