We show spectral invariance for faithful $*$-representations for a class of twisted convolution algebras. More precisely, if $G$ is a locally compact group with a continuous $2$-cocycle $c$ for which the corresponding Mackey group $G_c$ is $C^*$-unique and symmetric, then the twisted convolution algebra $L^1 (G,c)$ is spectrally invariant in $\mathbb{B}(\mathcal{H})$ for any faithful $*$-representation of $L^1 (G,c)$ as bounded operators on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. As an application of this result we give a proof of the statement that if $Δ$ is a closed cocompact subgroup of the phase space of a locally compact abelian group $G'$, and if $g$ is some function in the Feichtinger algebra $S_0 (G')$ that generates a Gabor frame for $L^2 (G')$ over $Δ$, then both the canonical dual atom and the canonical tight atom associated to $g$ are also in $S_0 (G')$. We do this without the use of periodization techniques from Gabor analysis.
We study the connection between Gabor frames for quasicrystals, the topology of the hull of a quasicrystal $Λ,$ and the $K$-theory of the twisted groupoid $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}_σ$ arising from a quasicrystal. In particular, we construct a finitely generated projective module $\mathcal{H}_Ł$ over $\mathcal{A}_σ$ related to time-frequency analysis, and any multiwindow Gabor frame for $Λ$ can be used to construct an idempotent in $M_N(\mathcal{A}_σ)$ representing $\mathcal{H}_Ł$ in $K_0(\mathcal{A}_σ).$ We show for lattice subsets in dimension two, this element corresponds to the Bott elemen…
In this paper we develop constructive invertibility conditions for the twisted convolution. Our approach is based on splitting the twisted convolution with rational parameters into a finite number of weighted convolutions, which can be interpreted as another twisted convolution on a finite cyclic group. In analogy with the twisted convolution of finite discrete signals, we derive an anti-homomorphism between the sequence space and a suitable matrix algebra which preserves the algebraic structure. In this way, the problem reduces to the analysis of finite matrices whose entries are sequences su…
We point out a connection between Gabor analysis and noncommutative analysis. Especially, the strong Morita equivalence of noncommutative tori appears as underlying setting for Gabor analysis, since the construction of equivalence bimodules for noncommutative tori has a natural formulation in the notions of Gabor analysis. As an application we show that Feichtinger's algebra is such an equivalence bimodule. Furthermore, we present Connes's construction of projective modules for noncommutative tori and the relevance of a generalization of Wiener's lemma for twisted convolution by Gröchenig and …
We consider converses to the density theorem for irreducible, projective, unitary group representations restricted to lattices using the dimension theory of Hilbert modules over twisted group von Neumann algebras. We show that under the right assumptions, the restriction of a $σ$-projective unitary representation $π$ of a group $G$ to a lattice $Γ$ extends to a Hilbert module over the twisted group von Neumann algebra $\text{L}(Γ,σ)$. We then compute the center-valued von Neumann dimension of this Hilbert module. For abelian groups with 2-cocycle satisfying Kleppner's condition, we show that t…
The duality principle for Gabor frames is one of the pillars of Gabor analysis. We establish a far-reaching generalization to Morita equivalent $C^*$-algebras where the equivalence bimodule is a finitely generated projective Hilbert $C^*$-module. These Hilbert $C^*$-modules are equipped with some extra structure and are called Gabor bimodules. We formulate a duality principle for standard module frames for Gabor bimodules which reduces to the well-known Gabor duality principle for twisted group $C^*$-algebras of a lattice in phase space. We lift all these results to the matrix algebra level an…
We develop a theory of quantum harmonic analysis on lattices in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$. Convolutions of a sequence with an operator and of two operators are defined over a lattice, and using corresponding Fourier transforms of sequences and operators we develop a version of harmonic analysis for these objects. We prove analogues of results from classical harmonic analysis and the quantum harmonic analysis of Werner, including Tauberian theorems and a Wiener division lemma. Gabor multipliers from time-frequency analysis are described as convolutions in this setting. The quantum harmonic analysis is …
Time-frequency analysis, such as the Gabor transform, plays an important role in many signal processing applications. The redundancy of such representations is often directly related to the computational load of any algorithm operating in the transform domain. To reduce complexity, it may be desirable to increase the time and frequency sampling intervals beyond the point where the transform is invertible, at the cost of an inevitable recovery error. In this paper we initiate the study of recovery procedures for non-invertible Gabor representations. We propose using fixed analysis and synthesis…
This paper considers generators of Heisenberg modules in the case of twisted group $C^*$-algebras of closed subgroups of locally compact abelian groups and how the restrction and/or periodization of these generators yield generators for other Heisenberg modules. Since generators of Heisenberg modules are exactly the generators of (multi-window) Gabor frames, our methods are going to be from Gabor analy\-sis. In the latter setting the procedure of restriction and periodization of generators is well known. Our results extend this established part of Gabor analy\-sis to the general setting of loc…
In this paper, we study the properties of the Eberlein convolution of measures and introduce a twisted version of it. For functions we show that the twisted Eberlein convolution can be seen as a translation invariant function-valued inner product. We study its regularity properties and show its existence on suitable sets of functions. For translation bounded measures we show that the (twisted) Eberlein convolution always exists along subsequences of the given sequence, and is a weakly almost periodic and Fourier transformable measure. We prove that if one of the two measures is mean almost per…
We discuss continuity of the twisted convolution on (weighted) Fourier modulation spaces. We use these results to establish continuity results for the twisted convolution on Lebesgue spaces. For example we prove that if $ω$ is an appropriate weight and $1\le p\le 2$, then $L^p_{(ω)}$ is an algebra under the twisted convolution.
We show that positive elements with respect to the twisted convolutions, belonging to some ultra-test function space of certain order at origin, belong to the ultra-test function space of the same order everywhere. We apply the result to positive semi-definite Weyl operators.
We consider nuclear function spaces on which the Weyl-Heisenberg group acts continuously and study the basic properties of the twisted convolution product of the functions with the dual space elements. The final theorem characterizes the corresponding algebra of convolution multipliers and shows that it contains all sufficiently rapidly decreasing functionals in the dual space. Consequently, we obtain a general description of the Moyal multiplier algebra of the Fourier-transformed space. The results extend the Weyl symbol calculus beyond the traditional framework of tempered distributions.
We define new symbol classes for pseudodifferntial operators and investigate their pseudodifferential calculus. The symbol classes are parametrized by commutative convolution algebras. To every solid convolution algebra over a lattice we associate a symbol class. Then every operator with such a symbol is almost diagonal with respect to special wave packets (coherent states or Gabor frames), and the rate of almost diagonalization is described precisely by the underlying convolution algebra. Furthermore, the corresponding class of pseudodifferential operators is a Banach algebra of bounded opera…
We consider modulation space and spaces of Schatten-von Neumann symbols where corresponding pseudo-differential operators map one Hilbert space to another. We prove Hölder-Young and Young type results for such spaces under dilated convolutions and multiplications. We also prove continuity properties for such spaces under the twisted convolution, and the Weyl product. These results lead to continuity properties for twisted convolutions on Lebesgue spaces, e.{}g. $L^p_{(ω)}$ is a twisted convolution algebra when $1\le p\le 2$ and appropriate weight $ω$.
We study the ranges of the maps of convolution $u\otimes v\mapsto u\ast v$ and a `twisted' convolution $u\otimes v\mapsto u\ast \check{v}$ ($\check{u}(s)=u(s^{-1})$) and on the Haagerup tensor product of a Fourier algebra of a compact group $A(G)$ with itself. We compare the results to result of factoring these maps through projective and operator projective tensor products. We notice that $(A(G),\ast)$ is an operator algebra and observe an unexpected set of spectral synthesis.
Let G be a locally compact group, let $Ω:G\times G\to \mathbb{C}^*$ be a 2-cocycle, and let $Φ$ be a Young function. In this paper, we consider the Orlicz space $L^Φ(G)$ and investigate its algebraic property under the twisted convolution $\circledast$ coming from $Ω$. We find sufficient conditions under which $(L^Φ(G),\circledast)$ becomes a Banach algebra or a Banach $*$-algebra; we call it a {\it twisted Orlicz algebra}. Furthermore, we study its harmonic analysis properties, such as symmetry, existence of functional calculus, regularity, and having Wiener property, mostly for the case when…
Let G be a locally compact group, let $Ω:G\times G\to \mathbb{C}^*$ be a 2-cocycle, and let ($Φ$,$Ψ$) be a complementary pair of strictly increasing continuous Young functions. We continue our investigation of the algebraic properties of the Orlicz space $L^Φ(G)$ with respect to the twisted convolution $\circledast$ coming from $Ω$. We show that the twisted Orlicz algebra $(L^Φ(G),\circledast)$ posses a bounded approximate identity if and only if it is unital if and only if $G$ is discrete. On the other hand, under suitable condition on $Ω$, $(L^Φ(G),\circledast)$ becomes an Arens regular, dua…

We introduce an extended class of cross-Toeplitz operators which act between Fock--Segal--Bargmann spaces with different weights. It is natural to consider these operators in the framework of representation theory of the Heisenberg group. Our main technique is representation of cross-Toeplitz by two-sided relative convolutions from the Heisenberg group. In turn, two-sided convolutions are reduced to usual (one-sided) convolutions on the Heisenberg group of the doubled dimensionality. This allows us to utilise the powerful group-representation technique of coherent states, co- and contra-varian…
The aim of this paper is to show that any continuous *-homomorphism of L1(Cn)(with twisted convolution as multipli- cation) into B(L2(Rn)) is essentially a Weyl transform. From this we deduce a similar characterisation for the group Fourier transform on the Heisenberg group, in terms of convolution.
