Detecting changes in asset co-movements is of much importance to financial practitioners, with numerous risk management benefits arising from the timely detection of breakdowns in historical correlations. In this article, we propose a real-time indicator to detect temporary increases in asset co-movements, the Autoencoder Reconstruction Ratio, which measures how well a basket of asset returns can be modelled using a lower-dimensional set of latent variables. The ARR uses a deep sparse denoising autoencoder to perform the dimensionality reduction on the returns vector, which replaces the PCA approach of the standard Absorption Ratio, and provides a better model for non-Gaussian returns. Through a systemic risk application on forecasting on the CRSP US Total Market Index, we show that lower ARR values coincide with higher volatility and larger drawdowns, indicating that increased asset co-movement does correspond with periods of market weakness. We also demonstrate that short-term (i.e. 5-min and 1-hour) predictors for realised volatility and market crashes can be improved by including additional ARR inputs.
The proliferation of zero-day threats (ZDTs) to companies' networks has been immensely costly and requires novel methods to scan traffic for malicious behavior at massive scale. The diverse nature of normal behavior along with the huge landscape of attack types makes deep learning methods an attractive option for their ability to capture highly-nonlinear behavior patterns. In this paper, the authors demonstrate an improvement upon a previously introduced methodology, which used a dual-autoencoder approach to identify ZDTs in network flow telemetry. In addition to the previously-introduced asse…
In this article we discuss the distribution of asset price movements by the market potential function. From the principle of free energy minimization we analyze two different kinds of market potentials. We obtain a U-shaped potential when market reversion (i.e. contrarian investors) is dominant. On the other hand, if there are more trend followers, flat and logarithmic--like potentials appeared. By using the Cyclical Adjusted Price-to-Earning ratio, which is a common valuation tool, we empirically investigate the market data. By studying long term data we observe the historical change of the m…

This paper presents a deep learning framework based on Long Short-term Memory Network(LSTM) that predicts price movement of cryptocurrencies from trade-by-trade data. The main focus of this study is on predicting short-term price changes in a fixed time horizon from a looking back period. By carefully designing features and detailed searching for best hyper-parameters, the model is trained to achieve high performance on nearly a year of trade-by-trade data. The optimal model delivers stable high performance(over 60% accuracy) on out-of-sample test periods. In a realistic trading simulation set…
Using machine learning and alternative data for the prediction of financial markets has been a popular topic in recent years. Many financial variables such as stock price, historical volatility and trade volume have already been through extensive investigation. Remarkably, we found no existing research on the prediction of an asset's market implied volatility within this context. This forward-looking measure gauges the sentiment on the future volatility of an asset, and is deemed one of the most important parameters in the world of derivatives. The ability to predict this statistic may therefo…

We construct realistic spot and equity option market simulators for a single underlying on the basis of normalizing flows. We address the high-dimensionality of market observed call prices through an arbitrage-free autoencoder that approximates efficient low-dimensional representations of the prices while maintaining no static arbitrage in the reconstructed surface. Given a multi-asset universe, we leverage the conditional invertibility property of normalizing flows and introduce a scalable method to calibrate the joint distribution of a set of independent simulators while preserving the dynam…
In an asset return series there is a conditional asymmetric dependence between current return and past volatility depending on the current return's sign. To take into account the conditional asymmetry, we introduce new models for asset return dynamics in which frequencies of the up and down movements of asset price have conditionally independent Poisson distributions with stochastic intensities. The intensities are assumed to be stochastic recurrence equations of the GARCH type in order to capture the volatility clustering and the leverage effect. We provide an important linkage between our mo…

We introduce a non linear pricing model of individual stock returns that defines a stickiness parameter of the returns. The pricing model resembles the capital asset pricing model used in finance but has a non linear component inspired from models of earth quake tectonic plate movements. The link to tectonic plate movements happens, since price movements of a given stock index is seen adding stress to its components of individual stock returns, in order to follow the index. How closely individual stocks follow the indexs price movements, can then be used to define their stickiness
Few assets in financial history have been as notoriously volatile as cryptocurrencies. While the long term outlook for this asset class remains unclear, we are successful in making short term price predictions for several major crypto assets. Using historical data from July 2015 to November 2019, we develop a large number of technical indicators to capture patterns in the cryptocurrency market. We then test various classification methods to forecast short-term future price movements based on these indicators. On both PPV and NPV metrics, our classifiers do well in identifying up and down marke…
In this chapter we studied the nonlinear co-movements between the Mexican Crude Oil price, the Mexican Stock Market Index and the USD/MXN Exchange Rate, for the sample period from 1994 to date. We used a battery of nonlinear tests, cf. (Patterson & Ashley, 2000) and one multivariate test, in order to determine the dynamic co-movement exerted from the oil prices to the stock and exchange rate markets. Such co-movement and time windows are exposed using the Brooks & Hinich (1999) cross- bicorrelation statistical test. The effects of oil spills on other markets have been studied from different an…
Factor analysis is a statistical technique employed to evaluate how observed variables correlate through common factors and unique variables. While it is often used to analyze price movement in the unstable stock market, it does not always yield easily interpretable results. In this study, we develop improved factor models by explicitly incorporating sector information on our studied stocks. We add eleven sectors of stocks as defined by the IBES, represented by respective sector-specific factors, to non-specific market factors to revise the factor model. We then develop an expectation maximiza…
We explore the effect of past market movements on the instantaneous correlations between assets within the futures market. Quantifying this effect is of interest to estimate and manage the risk associated to portfolios of futures in a non-stationary context. We apply and extend a previously reported method called the Principal Regression Analysis (PRA) to a universe of $84$ futures contracts between $2009$ and $2019$. We show that the past up (resp. down) 10 day trends of a novel predictor -- the eigen-factor -- tend to reduce (resp. increase) instantaneous correlations. We then carry out a mu…
Since the beginning of the new millennium, stock markets went through every state from long-time troughs, trade suspensions to all-time highs. The literature on asset pricing hence assumes random processes to be underlying the movement of stock returns. Observed procyclicality and time-varying correlation of stock returns tried to give the apparently random behavior some sort of structure. However, common misperceptions about the co-movement of asset prices in the years preceding the \emph{Great Recession} and the \emph{Global Commodity Crisis}, is said to have even fueled the crisis' economic…
