The polarized SILL programming language uniformly integrates functional programming and session-typed message-passing concurrency. It supports general recursion, asynchronous and synchronous communication, and higher-order programs that communicate channels and processes. We give polarized SILL a domain-theoretic semantics---the first denotational semantics for a language with this combination of features. Session types in polarized SILL denote pairs of domains of unidirectional communications. Processes denote continuous functions between these domains, and process composition is interpreted by a trace operator. We illustrate our semantics by validating expected program equivalences.
With one exception, our previous work on recurrence extraction and denotational semantics has focused on a source language that supports inductive types and structural recursion. The exception handles general recursion via an initial translation into call-by-push-value. In this note we give an extraction function from a language with general recursive function definitions and recursive types directly to a PCF-like recurrence language. We prove the main soundness result (that the syntactic recurrences in fact bound the operational cost) without the use of a logical relation, thereby significant…
Incremental computation has recently been studied using the concepts of change structures and derivatives of programs, where the derivative of a function allows updating the output of the function based on a change to its input. We generalise change structures to change actions, and study their algebraic properties. We develop change actions for common structures in computer science, including directed-complete partial orders and Boolean algebras. We then show how to compute derivatives of fixpoints. This allows us to perform incremental evaluation and maintenance of recursively defined functi…
Just like any other branch of mathematics, denotational semantics of programming languages should be formalised in type theory, but adapting traditional domain theoretic semantics, as originally formulated in classical set theory to type theory has proven challenging. This paper is part of a project on formulating denotational semantics in type theories with guarded recursion. This should have the benefit of not only giving simpler semantics and proofs of properties such as adequacy, but also hopefully in the future to scale to languages with advanced features, such as general references, outs…
Automatic differentiation (AD) aims to compute derivatives of user-defined functions, but in Turing-complete languages, this simple specification does not fully capture AD's behavior: AD sometimes disagrees with the true derivative of a differentiable program, and when AD is applied to non-differentiable or effectful programs, it is unclear what guarantees (if any) hold of the resulting code. We study an expressive differentiable programming language, with piecewise-analytic primitives, higher-order functions, and general recursion. Our main result is that even in this general setting, a versi…
"Interaction trees" (ITrees) are a general-purpose data structure for representing the behaviors of recursive programs that interact with their environments. A coinductive variant of "free monads," ITrees are built out of uninterpreted events and their continuations. They support compositional construction of interpreters from "event handlers", which give meaning to events by defining their semantics as monadic actions. ITrees are expressive enough to represent impure and potentially nonterminating, mutually recursive computations, while admitting a rich equational theory of equivalence up to …
We aim to reason about the correctness of behaviour-preserving transformations of Erlang programs. Behaviour preservation is characterised by semantic equivalence. Based upon our existing formal semantics for Core Erlang, we investigate potential definitions of suitable equivalence relations. In particular we adapt a number of existing approaches of expression equivalence to a simple functional programming language that carries the main features of sequential Core Erlang; we then examine the properties of the equivalence relations and formally establish connections between them. The results pr…
Yarel is a core reversible programming language that implements a class of permutations, defined recursively, which are primitive recursive complete. The current release of Yarel syntax and operational semantics, implemented by compiling Yarel to Java, is 0.1.0, according to Semantic Versioning 2.0.0. Yarel comes with Yarel-IDE, developed as an Eclipse plug-in by means of XText.
Given a simple recursive function, we show how to extract two interacting processes from it. The two processes can be described by means of iterative programs, one of which is intrinsically reversible, in a language that, up to minor details, belongs to the core of widely used imperative programming languages. We implement the two processes as interleaving synchronous JAVA threads whose interaction is equivalent to the recursive function they are extracted from.
We propose abstract compilation for precise static type analysis of object-oriented languages based on coinductive logic programming. Source code is translated to a logic program, then type-checking and inference problems amount to queries to be solved with respect to the resulting logic program. We exploit a coinductive semantics to deal with infinite terms and proofs produced by recursive types and methods. Thanks to the recent notion of structural resolution for coinductive logic programming, we are able to infer very precise type information, including a class of irrational recursive types…
In call-by-value languages, some mutually-recursive value definitions can be safely evaluated to build recursive functions or cyclic data structures, but some definitions (let rec x = x + 1) contain vicious circles and their evaluation fails at runtime. We propose a new static analysis to check the absence of such runtime failures. We present a set of declarative inference rules, prove its soundness with respect to the reference source-level semantics of Nordlander, Carlsson, and Gill (2008), and show that it can be (right-to-left) directed into an algorithmic check in a surprisingly simple wa…
The approach to reasoning about structural operational semantics style specifications supported by the Abella system is discussed. This approach uses lambda tree syntax to treat object language binding and encodes binding related properties in generic judgments. Further, object language specifications are embedded directly into the reasoning framework through recursive definitions. The treatment of binding via generic judgments implicitly enforces distinctness and atomicity in the names used for bound variables. These properties must, however, be made explicit in reasoning tasks. This objectiv…

We present the guarded lambda-calculus, an extension of the simply typed lambda-calculus with guarded recursive and coinductive types. The use of guarded recursive types ensures the productivity of well-typed programs. Guarded recursive types may be transformed into coinductive types by a type-former inspired by modal logic and Atkey-McBride clock quantification, allowing the typing of acausal functions. We give a call-by-name operational semantics for the calculus, and define adequate denotational semantics in the topos of trees. The adequacy proof entails that the evaluation of a program alw…
We describe several views of the semantics of a simple programming language as formal documents in the calculus of inductive constructions that can be verified by the Coq proof system. Covered aspects are natural semantics, denotational semantics, axiomatic semantics, and abstract interpretation. Descriptions as recursive functions are also provided whenever suitable, thus yielding a a verification condition generator and a static analyser that can be run inside the theorem prover for use in reflective proofs. Extraction of an interpreter from the denotational semantics is also described. All …
Program equivalence is the fulcrum for reasoning about and proving properties of programs. For noninterference, for example, program equivalence up to the secrecy level of an observer is shown. A powerful enabler for such proofs are logical relations. Logical relations only recently were adopted for session types--but exclusively for terminating languages. This paper scales logical relations to recursive session types. It develops a logical relation for progress-sensitive noninterference for linear session types, tackling the challenges non-termination and concurrency pose. The contributions i…

We give an adequate denotational semantics for languages with recursive higher-order types, continuous probability distributions, and soft constraints. These are expressive languages for building Bayesian models of the kinds used in computational statistics and machine learning. Among them are untyped languages, similar to Church and WebPPL, because our semantics allows recursive mixed-variance datatypes. Our semantics justifies important program equivalences including commutativity. Our new semantic model is based on `quasi-Borel predomains'. These are a mixture of chain-complete partial orde…
