In order to utilize the full potential of tailored flows of electromagnetic energy at the nanoscale, we need to understand its general behaviour given by its generic representation of interfering random waves. For applications in on-chip photonics as well as particle trapping, it is important to discern the topological features in the flow field between the commonly investigated cases of fully vectorial light fields and their 2D equivalents. We demonstrate the distinct difference between these cases in both the allowed topology of the flow-field and the spatial distribution of its singularities, given by their pair correlation function g(r). Specifically, we show that a random field confined to a 2D plane has a divergence-free flow-field and exhibits a liquid-like correlation, whereas its freely propagating counterpart has no clear correlation and features a transverse flow-field with the full range of possible 2D topologies around its singularities.
For propagating and evanescent vector Bessel beams, we study the singularities of the Poynting vector (Poynting singularities), at which the energy flux density turns to zero. Poynting singularities include all the phase singularities and some of polarization ones (L- and C-points). We reveal the existence conditions and positions of singularities, which are located at cylindrical surfaces around the beam axis. We mark the special case of the evanescent Bessel beam in the form of cylindrical standing wave, that is singular at any spatial point.
We present the results of a study of the Poynting vector field generic singularities at the resonant light scattering of a plane monochromatic linearly polarized electromagnetic wave by a subwavelength particle. We reveal the impact of the problem symmetry, the spatial dimension, and the energy conservation law on the properties of the singularities. We show that, in the cases when the problem symmetry results in the existence of an invariant plane for the Poynting vector field lines, a formation of a standing wave in the immediate vicinity of a singularity gives rise to a saddle-type singular…
Singularities of the Poynting vector field at resonant light scattering by nanoparticles are discussed and classified. It is shown that there are two generic types of them, namely (i) the singularities related to the vanishing of the magnetic (and/or electric) field at the singular points and (ii) the singularities related to the formation of standing waves in the proximity of the singular points. The connection of these types of singularities to the topology of the singular points and the space dimension (3D vs. 2D) is revealed.
We study the near field to the far field evolution of spin angular momentum (SAM) density and the Poynting vector of the scattered waves from spherical scatterers. The results show that at the near field, the SAM density and the Poynting vector are dominated by their transverse components. While the former (transverse SAM) is independent of the helicity of the incident circular polarization state, the latter (transverse Poynting vector) depends upon the polarization state. It is further demonstrated that the magnitudes and the spatial extent of the transverse SAM and the transverse momentum co…
The optical properties of solid core microstructured optical fibers (SC MOFs) have been studied for a long time. The process of energy outflow of the core modes has always been associated with the process of constructive interference of the core modes fields under reflection from the photonic crystal cladding. In this paper, we want to offer a new look at the light localization in the core of SC MOFs related to the behavior of spin and orbital parts of the Poynting vector of these core modes and singularities arising in it.
A novel approach based on the two-channel moiré deflectometry has been used to measure both wave-front and transverse component of the Poynting vector of an optical vortex beam. Generated vortex beam by the q-plate, an inhomogeneous liquid crystal cell, has been analyzed with such technique. The measured topological charge of generated beams are in an excellent agreement with theoretical prediction.
We study the effect of focusing of the radially and azimuthally polarized vector beams on the spin angular momentum (SAM) density and Poynting vector of scattered waves from a Mie particle. Remarkably, the study reveals that the SAM density of the scattered field is solely transverse in nature for radially and azimuthally polarized incident vector beams; however the Poynting vector shows usual longitudinal character. We also demonstrate that the transverse SAM density can further be tuned with wavelength and focusing of the incident beam by exploiting the interference of different scattering m…
Vortex solitons (dark solitons) are described in self-defocusing Kerr media whose phase line singularity is not parallel to the propagation direction, but is perpendicular or tilted almost arbitrary angles, depending on the medium linear dispersion. These solitons broaden the so-called spatiotemporal optical vortices recently observed in experiments to the nonlinear realm, opening new perspectives in practical applications of optical vortices.
Known since Kepler's observation that a comet's tail is oriented away from the sun, radiation pressure stimulated remarkable discoveries in electromagnetism, quantum physics and relativity [1,2]. This phenomenon plays a crucial role in a variety of systems, from atomic [3-5] to astronomical [6] scales. The pressure of light is associated with the momentum of photons, and it is usually assumed that both the optical momentum and the radiation-pressure force are naturally aligned with the propagation of light, i.e., its wavevector. Here we report the direct observation of an extraordinary optical…
The longitudinal and the transverse beam shifts, namely, the Goos-Hänchen (GH) and the Spin-Hall (SH) shifts are usually observed at planar interfaces. It has recently been shown that the transverse SH shift may also arise due to scattering of plane waves. Here, we show that analogous in-plane (longitudinal) shift also exist in scattering of plane waves from micro/nano systems. We study both the GH and the SH shifts in plasmonic metal nanoparticles/ nanostructures and dielectric micro-particles employing a unified framework that utilizes the transverse components of the Poynting vector of the …
We examine the momentum and angular-momentum (AM) properties of monochromatic optical fields in dispersive and inhomogeneous isotropic media, using the Abraham- and Minkowski-type approaches, as well as the kinetic (Poynting-like) and canonical (with separate spin and orbital degrees of freedom) pictures. While the kinetic Abraham-Poynting momentum describes the energy flux and the group velocity of the wave, the Minkowski-type quantities, with proper dispersion corrections, describe the actual momentum and angular momentum carried by the wave. The kinetic Minkowski-type momentum and AM densit…

In this article we show that in a three dimensional (3D) optical field there can exist two types of hidden singularities, one is spin density (SD) phase singularity and the other is SD vector singularity, which are both unique to 3D fields. The nature of these SD singularities is discussed and their connection with traditional optical singularities is also examined. Especially it is shown that in a 3D field with purely transverse spin density (`photonic wheels'), these two types of singularities exhibit very interesting behaviors: they are exactly mapped to each other regardless of their diffe…
The behavior of instantaneous and averaged vectors of the Poynting vector transverse component for the resulting field formed as a superposition of waves with different frequencies and different polarizations is considered. Results of computer simulation and experimental data are obtained for the superposition of frequently differed vortices with different and the same signs of topological charges. It is shown that the captured particle rotates due to the orbital momentum and substantial increase of particle rotation speed in the case of polychromatic radiation as opposed to monochromatic is o…
Singularities, i.e. places of discontinuities of parameters are extremely general objects appearing in electromagnetic waves and thus are the key to understanding fundamental wave processes. These structures commonly occur in purely coherent, highly directional waves, such as laser beams, determining additional spatial or "`topological"' properties of the wave fields independently of their propagational dynamics. For instance, topologies of wave fronts, called phase singularities, add orbital degrees of freedom to electromagnetic waves. These singularities are common to all types of scalar wav…
Among the interesting outcomes of the study of the physical applications of spectral singularities in PT-symmetric optical systems is the discovery of CPA-lasers. These are devices that act both as a threshold laser and a coherent perfect absorber (CPA) for the same values of their physical parameters. Unlike a homogeneous slab that is made to act as a CPA, a slab CPA-laser would absorb the incident waves coming from the left and right of the device provided that they have appropriate intensity and phase contrasts. We provide a comprehensive study of one of the simplest experimentally accessib…
We study spectral singularities and their application in determining the threshold gain coefficient $g^{(E/M)}$ for oblique transverse electric/magnetic (TE/TM) modes of an infinite planar slab of homogenous optically active material. We show that $g^{(E)}$ is a monotonically decreasing function of the incidence angle $θ$ (measured with respect to the normal direction to the slab), while $g^{(M)}$ has a single maximum, $θ_c$, where it takes an extremely large value. We identify $θ_c$ with the Brewster's angle and show that $g^{(E)}$ and $g^{(M)}$ coincide for $θ=0$ (normal incidence), tend to …
Using full-wave numerical simulations and analytical multipole expansions we investigated the properties of real-space polarization singularities that emerge in light scattering by subwavelength particles. We considered spherical and torus particles made of dielectric or perfect-electric-conductor material. We determined the topological indices and the trajectories of electric-field polarization singularities in both the near-field and far-field regions. In the far-field region, a total of four singularities are identified and the sum of their polarization topological indices is two, independe…
Spin angular momentum, an elementary dynamical property of classical electromagnetic fields, plays an important role in spin-orbit and light-matter interactions, especially in near-field optics. The research on optical spins has led to the discovery of phenomena such as optical spin-momentum locking and photonic topological quasiparticles, as well as applications in high-precision detection and nanometrology. Here, we investigate spin-momentum relations in paraxial optical systems and show that the optical spin angular momentum contains transverse and longitudinal spin components simultaneousl…
We examine the momentum, spin, and orbital angular momentum of structured monochromatic optical fields in dispersive inhomogeneous isotropic media. There are two bifurcations in this general problem: the Abraham-Minkowski dilemma and the kinetic (Poynting-like) versus canonical (spin-orbital) pictures. We show that the kinetic Abraham momentum describes the energy flux and group velocity of the wave in the medium. At the same time, we introduce novel canonical Minkowsky-type momentum, spin, and orbital angular momentum densities of the field. These quantities exhibit fairly natural forms, anal…
