We are interested in fast and stable iterative regularization methods for image deblurring problems with space invariant blur. The associated coefficient matrix has a Block Toeplitz Toeplitz Blocks (BTTB) like structure plus a small rank correction depending on the boundary conditions imposed on the imaging model. In the literature, several strategies have been proposed in the attempt to define proper preconditioner for iterative regularization methods that involve such linear systems. Usually, the preconditioner is chosen to be a Block Circulant with Circulant Blocks (BCCB) matrix because it can be efficiently exploit Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) for any computation, including the (pseudo-)inversion. Nevertheless, for ill-conditioned problems, it is well known that BCCB preconditioners cannot provide a strong clustering of the eigenvalues. Moreover, in order to get an effective preconditioner, it is crucial to preserve the structure of the coefficient matrix.
On the other hand, thresholding iterative methods have been recently successfully applied to image deblurring problems, exploiting the sparsity of the image in a proper wavelet domain. Motivated by the results of recent papers, we combine a nonstationary preconditioned iteration with the modified linearized Bregman algorithm (MLBA) and proper regularization operators.
Several numerical experiments shows the performances of our methods in terms of quality of the restorations.
This paper presents a couple of preconditioning techniques that can be used to enhance the performance of iterative regularization methods applied to image deblurring problems with a variety of point spread functions (PSFs) and boundary conditions. More precisely, we first consider the anti-identity preconditioner, which symmetrizes the coefficient matrix associated to problems with zero boundary conditions, allowing the use of MINRES as a regularization method. When considering more sophisticated boundary conditions and strongly nonsymmetric PSFs, the anti-identity preconditioner improves the…

The image deblurring problem consists of reconstructing images from blur and noise contaminated available data. In this AMS Notices article, we provide an overview of some well known numerical linear algebra techniques that are use for solving this problem. In particular, we start by carefully describing how to represent images, the process of blurring an image and modeling different kind of added noise. Then, we present regularization methods such as Tikhonov (on the standard and general form), Total Variation and other variations with sparse and edge preserving properties. Additionally, we b…
We present an efficient and accurate energy-conserving implicit particle-in-cell~(PIC) algorithm for the electrostatic Vlasov system, with particular emphasis on its high robustness for simulating complex plasma systems with multiple physical scales. This method consists of several indispensable elements: (\romannumeral1) the reformulation of the original Vlasov-Poisson system into an equivalent Vlasov-Ampère system with divergence-/curl-free constraints; (\romannumeral2) a novel structure-preserving Fourier spatial discretization, which exactly preserves these constraints at the discrete leve…
Efficient and robust iterative solvers for strong anisotropic elliptic equations are very challenging. In this paper a block preconditioning method is introduced to solve the linear algebraic systems of a class of micro-macro asymptotic-preserving (MMAP) scheme. MMAP method was developed by Degond {\it et al.} in 2012 where the discrete matrix has a $2\times2$ block structure. By the approximate Schur complement a series of block preconditioners are constructed. We first analyze a natural approximate Schur complement that is the coefficient matrix of the original non-AP discretization. However…
It is well known that the discretization of fractional diffusion equations (FDEs) with fractional derivatives $α\in(1,2)$, using the so-called weighted and shifted Grünwald formula, leads to linear systems whose coefficient matrices show a Toeplitz-like structure. More precisely, in the case of variable coefficients, the related matrix sequences belong to the so-called Generalized Locally Toeplitz (GLT) class. Conversely, when the given FDE have constant coefficients, using a suitable discretization, we encounter a Toeplitz structure associated to a nonnegative function $\mathcal{F}_α$, called…
We propose a Fourier pseudo-spectral scheme for the space-fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The proposed scheme has the following features: it is linearly implicit, it preserves two invariants of the equation, its unique solvability is guaranteed without any restrictions on space and time step sizes. The scheme requires solving a complex symmetric linear system per time step. To solve the system efficiently, we also present a certain variable transformation and preconditioner.
When solving linear systems arising from PDE discretizations, iterative methods (such as Conjugate Gradient, GMRES, or MINRES) are often the only practical choice. To converge in a small number of iterations, however, they have to be coupled with an efficient preconditioner. The efficiency of the preconditioner depends largely on its accuracy on the eigenvectors corresponding to small eigenvalues, and unfortunately, black-box methods typically cannot guarantee sufficient accuracy on these eigenvectors. Thus, constructing the preconditioner becomes a problem-dependent task. However, for a large…
We propose a two-level iterative scheme for solving general sparse linear systems. The proposed scheme consists of a sparse preconditioner that increases the skew-symmetric part and makes the main diagonal of the coefficient matrix as close to the identity as possible. The preconditioned system is then solved via a particular Minimal Residual Method for Shifted Skew-Symmetric Systems (mrs). This leads to a two-level (inner and outer) iterative scheme where the mrs has short term recurrences and satisfies an optimally condition. A preconditioner for the inner system is designed via a skew-symme…

We consider efficient methods for computing solutions to dynamic inverse problems, where both the quantities of interest and the forward operator (measurement process) may change at different time instances but we want to solve for all the images simultaneously. We are interested in large-scale ill-posed problems that are made more challenging by their dynamic nature and, possibly, by the limited amount of available data per measurement step. To remedy these difficulties, we apply regularization methods that enforce simultaneous regularization in space and time (such as edge enhancement at eac…
