We have studied correlations in the speckle patterns generated by the scattering of perfect optical vortex (POV) beams and used them for producing a new-class of coherence functions, namely Bessel coherence functions. Higher (zeroth) order Bessel coherence functions have been realized in cross (auto)-correlation between the speckle patterns generated by the scattering of perfect vortex beams of different orders. We have also studied the propagation of produced Bessel coherence functions and characterized their divergence with respect to the radius of their first ring for different orders m=0--4. We observed that the divergence varies linearly with the order of the coherence function. We provide the exact analytical expression for the auto-correlation as well as cross-correlation functions for speckle patterns. Our experimental results are in good agreement with the analytical results.
We report on efficient nonlinear generation of ultrafast, higher order "perfect" vortices at the green wavelength. Based on Fourier transformation of the higher order Bessel-Gauss beam generated through the combination of spiral phase plate and axicon we have transformed the Gaussian beam of the ultrafast Yb-fiber laser at 1060 nm into perfect vortices of power 4.4 W and order up to 6. Using single-pass second harmonic generation (SHG) of such vortices in 5-mm long chirped MgO-doped, periodically poled congruent LiNbO$_3$ crystal we have generated perfect vortices at green wavelength with outp…
We consider reflection and transmission of 2D quantum wavepackets with phase vortices (also known in optics as spatiotemporal vortex pulses) at potential step-like, delta-function, and rectangular barriers. The presence of a vortex significantly modifies the Wigner time delays and Goos-Hänchen shifts, previously studied for Gaussian-like wavepackets. In particular, the scattered wavepackets undergo non-zero time delays and lateral shifts even for purely real scattering coefficients, when the standard Wigner and Artmann formulae vanish. We derive analytical expressions for the vortex-induced ti…
Perfect optical vortex (POV) is a type of vortex beam with an infinite thin ring and a fixed radius independent of its topological charge. Here we propose the concept of generalized perfect optical vortex along arbitrary curves beyond the regular shapes of circle and ellipse. Generalized perfect optical vortices also share the similar properties as POVs, such as defined only along infinite thin curves and owning topological charges independent of scales. Notably, they naturally degenerate to the POVs and elliptic POVs along circles and ellipses, respectively. We also experimentally generated t…
We have experimentally generated higher order optical vortices and scattered them through a ground glass plate that results in speckle formation. Intensity autocorrelation measurements of speckles show that their size decreases with increase in the order of the vortex. It implies increase in angular diameter of the vortices with their order. The characterization of vortices in terms of their annular bright ring also helps us to understand these observations. The results may find applications in stellar intensity interferometry and thermal ghost imaging.
We study linear and nonlinear wave scattering by an optical vortex in a self-defocusing nonlinear Kerr medium. In the linear case, we find a splitting of a plane-wave front at the vortex proportional to its circulation, similar to what occurs in the scattered wave of electrons for the Aharonov-Bohm effect. For larger wave amplitudes, we study analytically and numerically the scattering of a dark-soliton stripe (a nonlinear analog of a small-amplitude wavepacket) by a vortex and observe a significant asymmetry of the scattered wave. Subsequently, a wavefront splitting of the scattered wave deve…
We propose and experimentally verify a novel scheme for diagnosing the order of a perturbed optical vortex using its 2-D spatial autocorrelation function. The order of a vortex was found to be equal to the number of dark rings or zero points present in the correlation function. We have provided a compact analytical expression for the correlation function in the form of Laguerre polynomials. Further, we have utilized the divergence of the first zero point of Laguerre polynomials upon propagation to obtain information about higher-order spatial modes, and compared it with our experimental result…
Perfect optical vortices (POVs) provide an enabling solution to address the predicament induced by the strong dependence of classical optical vortices on theirs carried topological charges. Here, a type of generalized POVs with controllable impulse ring profile was proposed and demonstrated. Especially, a type of "absolute" dark POVs surrounded by two bright ringlobes in each side was presented, which provides a perfect annular potential well along those dark impulse rings for trapping steadily low-index particles, cells, or quantum gas, etc. In further, several POVs with different impulse rin…
We report on experimental study of optical properties of two-dimensional square lattice of triangle Co and CoFe nanoparticles with a vortex magnetization distribution. We demonstrate that intensity of light scattered in diffraction maxima depends on the vorticity of the particles magnetization and it can be manipulated by applying an external magnetic field. The experimental results can be understood in terms of phenomenological theory.
Encryption techniques demonstrate a great deal of security when implemented in an optical system (such as holography) due to the inherent physical properties of light and the precision it demands. However, such systems have shown to be vulnerable during digital implementations under various crypt-analysis attacks. One of the primary reasons for this is the predictable nature of the security keys (i.e., simulated random keys) used in the encryption process. To alleviate, in this work, we are presenting a Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) for producing a robust security key for digital encr…
A general concept of perfect nonradiating modes in dielectric nanoparticles of an arbitrary shape is put forward. It is proved that such modes exist in axisymmetric dielectric nanoparticles and have unlimited radiative Q-factors. With smart tuning of the excitation beams, perfect modes appear as deep minima in the scattered radiation spectra (up to complete disappearance), but at the same time, they have a giant amplification of the fields inside the particle. Such modes have no analogs and can be useful for the realization of nanosensors, low threshold nanolasers, and other strong nonlinear e…
The perfect vortex is a new class of optical vortex beam having ring radius independent of its topological charge (order). One of the simplest techniques to generate such beams is the Fourier transformation of the Bessel-Gauss beam. The variation in ring radius of such vortices require Fourier lenses of different focal lengths and or complicated imaging setup. Here we report a novel experimental scheme to generate perfect vortex of any ring radius using a convex lens and an axicon. As a proof of principle, using a lens of focal length f=200mm, we have varied the radius of the vortex beam acros…
Based on the Kirchhoff-Fresnel approximation, we consider behavior of the optical vortices (OV) upon propagation of the diffracted Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams with topological charge |m| = 1, 2. Under conditions of weak diffraction perturbation (i.e. the diffraction obstacle covers only the far transverse periphery of the incident LG beam), the OVs describe almost perfect 3D spirals within the diffracted beam body, which is an impressive demonstration of the helical nature of an OV beam. The far-field OV positions within the diffracted beam cross section depend on the wavefront curvature of t…
Perfect (optical) vortices (PVs) have the mooted ability to encode orbital angular momentum (OAM) onto the field within a well-defined annular ring. Although this makes the near-field radial profile independent of OAM, the far-field radial profile nevertheless scales with OAM, forming a Bessel structure. A consequence of this is that quantitative measurement of PVs by modal decomposition has been thought to be unviable. Here, we show that the OAM content of a PV can be measured quantitatively, including superpositions of OAM within one perfect vortex. We outline the theory and confirm it by ex…
Mie theory is one of the main tools describing scattering of propagating electromagnetic waves by spherical particles. Evanescent optical fields are also scattered by particles and exert radiation forces which can be used for optical near-field manipulations. We show that the Mie theory can be naturally adopted for the scattering of evanescent waves via rotation of its standard solutions by a complex angle. This offers a simple and powerful tool for calculations of the scattered fields and radiation forces. Comparison with other, more cumbersome, approaches shows perfect agreement, thereby val…
Magnetic field can penetrate into type-II superconductors in the form of Abrikosov vortices, which are magnetic flux tubes surrounded by circulating supercurrents often trapped at defects referred to as pinning sites. Although the average properties of the vortex matter can be tuned with magnetic fields, temperature or electric currents, handling of individual vortices remains challenging and has been demonstrated only with sophisticated magnetic force, superconducting quantum interference device or strain-induced scanning local probe microscopies. Here, we introduce a far-field optical method…
The polarization of the light scattered by an optically dense, random solution of dielectric nanoparticles shows peculiar properties when the scatterers exhibit strong electric and magnetic polarizabilities. While the distribution of the scattering intensity in these systems shows the typical irregular speckle patterns, the helicity of the incident light can be fully conserved when the electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the scatterers are equal. We show that the multiple scattering of helical beams by a random dispersion of "dual" dipolar nano-spheres leads to a speckle pattern exhibiti…
We have generated and propagated both diffracting and non-diffracting speckles using the scattering of perfect optical vortices. The diffracting speckles have been realized in the near field and non-diffracting speckles have been realized in the far field, that is after taking the Fourier transform of near-field speckles using a simple convex lens. The exact analytical expressions have been provided for the size of both diffracting as well as non-diffracting speckles and compared with our experimental results. We found that the experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical re…
