Recently found spin-flip non-invariant (SFNI) conserved quantities play important roles in discussing nonequilibrium physics of the XXZ model. The representative examples are the generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) and the ballistic transport of the spin current. In spite of big progress in understanding nonequilibrium physics of integrable systems, the general framework to determine a minimal complete set of conserved quantities which describes the long-time steady state has not yet been found. This paper shows that the GGE of the gapless XXZ model consists of functionally independent conserved quantities rather than linearly independent. At the same time, the physical meaning of SFNI conserved quantities is provided. We also discuss that there exist ballistic channels of the spin current supported by non-quasilocal conserved quantities. The saturation of the lower bound for the Drude weight by quasilocal conserved quantities reads the linear dependence of non-quasilocal conserved quantities on quasilocal ones. We show that their (generalized) linearly dependence relation is consistent with the statement that the GGE consists of functionally independent conserved quantities without containing all linearly independent conserved quantities.
We investigate nonequilibrium relaxations of Ising models at the critical point by using a cluster update. While preceding studies imply that nonequilibrium cluster-flip dynamics at the critical point are universally described by the stretched-exponential function, we find that the dynamics changes from the stretched-exponential to the power function as the dimensionality is increased: The two-, three-, four-, and infinite-dimensional Ising models are numerically studied, and the four- and infinite-dimensional Ising models exhibit the power-law relaxation. We also show that the finite-size sca…
We study a class of nonequilibrium lattice models which describe local redistributions of a globally conserved energy. A particular subclass can be solved analytically, allowing to define a temperature T_{th} along the same lines as in the equilibrium microcanonical ensemble. The fluctuation-dissipation relation is explicitely found to be linear, but its slope differs from the inverse temperature T_{th}^{-1}. A numerical renormalization group procedure suggests that, at a coarse-grained level, all models behave similarly, leading to a two-parameter description of their macroscopic properties.
We present a general field-theoretic strategy to analyze three connected families of continuous phase transitions which occur in nonequilibrium steady-states. We focus on transitions taking place between an active state and one absorbing state, when there exist an infinite number of such absorbing states. In such transitions the order parameter is coupled to an auxiliary field. Three situations arise according to whether the auxiliary field is diffusive and conserved, static and conserved, or finally static and not conserved.
Scaling and hyperscaling laws provide exact relations among critical exponents describing the behavior of a system at criticality. For nonequilibrium growth models with a conserved drift there exist few of them. One such relation is $α+z=4$, found to be inexact in a renormalization group calculation for several classical models in this field. Herein we focus on the two-dimensional case and show that it is possible to construct conserved surface growth equations for which the relation $α+z=4$ is exact in the renormalization group sense. We explain the presence of this scaling law in terms of th…
We show that intensive thermodynamic parameters associated to additive conserved quantities can be naturally defined from a statistical approach in far-from-equilibrium steady-state systems, under few assumptions, and without any detailed balance requirement. It may apply, e.g., to dissipative systems like granular gases where volume or mass is still conserved, or to systems with periodic boundary conditions where fluxes of conserved quantities are present. We emphasize the usefulness of this concept to characterize the coexistence of different nonequilibrium phases, and discuss the influence …
We study the noisy nonequilibrium dynamics of a conserved density that is driven by a fluctuating surface governed by the conserved Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. We uncover the universal scaling properties of the conserved density. We consider two separate minimal models where the surface fluctuations couple (i) with the spatial variation of the conserved density, and (ii) directly with the magnitude of the conserved density. Both these two models conserve the density, but differ from symmetry stand point. We use our result to highlight the dependence of nonequilibrium universality classes on …
We investigate the particle and heat transport in quantum junctions with the geometry of star graphs. The system is in a nonequilibrium steady state, characterized by the different temperatures and chemical potentials of the heat reservoirs connected to the edges of the graph. We explore the Landauer-Buettiker state and its orbit under parity and time reversal transformations. Both particle number and total energy are conserved in these states. However the heat and chemical potential energy are in general not separately conserved, which gives origin to a basic process of energy transmutation a…
The influence of nonequilibrium bulk conditions on the properties of the interfaces exhibited by a kinetic Ising--like model system with nonequilibrium steady states is studied. The system is maintained out of equilibrium by perturbing the familiar spin--flip dynamics at temperature T with completely--random flips; one may interpret these as ideally simulating some (dynamic) impurities. We find evidence that, in the present case, the nonequilibrium mechanism adds to the basic thermal one resulting on a renormalization of microscopic parameters such as the probability of interfacial broken bond…
We investigate the critical dynamics of the $n$-component relaxational models C and D which incorporate the coupling of a nonconserved and conserved order parameter S, respectively, to the conserved energy density rho, under nonequilibrium conditions by means of the dynamical renormalization group. Detailed balance violations can be implemented isotropically by allowing for different effective temperatures for the heat baths coupling to the slow modes. In the case of model D with conserved order parameter, the energy density fluctuations can be integrated out. For model C with scalar order par…
We ask what happens when two systems having a nonequilibrium steady state are kept in contact and allowed to exchange a quantity, say mass, which is conserved in the combined system. Will the systems eventually evolve to a new stationary state where certain intensive thermodynamic variable, like equilibrium chemical potential, equalizes following zeroth law of thermodynamics and, if so, under what conditions is it possible? We argue that the zeroth law would hold, provided both systems have short-ranged spatial correlations and they {\it interact weakly} to exchange mass with rates satisfying …
Considering a broad class of steady-state nonequilibrium systems for which some additive quantities are conserved by the dynamics, we introduce from a statistical approach intensive thermodynamic parameters (ITPs) conjugated to the conserved quantities. This definition does not require any detailed balance relation to be fulfilled. Rather, the system has to satisfy a general additivity property, which holds in most of the models usually considered in the literature, including those described by a matrix product ansatz with finite matrices. The main property of these ITPs is to take equal value…
When periodically driven by an external magnetic field, a spin system can enter a phase of steady entrained oscillations with nonequilibrium probability distribution function. We consider an arbitrary magnetic field switching its direction with frequency comparable with the spin-flip rate and show that the resulting nonequilibrium probability distribution can be related to the system equilibrium distribution in the presence of a constant magnetic field of the same magnitude. We derive convenient approximate expressions for this exact relation and discuss their implications.
Fixed-energy sandpiles with stochastic update rules are known to exhibit a nonequilibrium phase transition from an active phase into infinitely many absorbing states. Examples include the conserved Manna model, the conserved lattice gas, and the conserved threshold transfer process. It is believed that the transitions in these models belong to an autonomous universality class of nonequilibrium phase transitions, the so-called Manna class. Contrarily, the present numerical study of selected (1+1)-dimensional models in this class suggests that their critical behavior converges to directed percol…
After a sudden quench from the disordered high-temperature $T_0\to\infty$ phase to a final temperature below the critical point $T_F \ll T_c$, the non-conserved order parameter dynamics of the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model on a square lattice (2dIM) initially approaches the critical percolation state before entering the coarsening regime. This approach involves two timescales associated with the first appearance (at time $t_{{\rm p}_1}>0$) and stabilization (at time $t_{\rm p}>t_{{\rm p}_1}$) of a giant percolation cluster, as previously reported. However, the microscopic mechanism…
Nonequilibrium kinetic Ising models evolving under the competing effect of spin flips at zero temperature and Kawasaki-type spin-exchange kinetics at infinite temperature T are investigated here in one dimension from the point of view of phase transition and critical behaviour. Branching annihilating random walks with an even number of offspring (on the part of the ferromagnetic domain boundaries), is a decisive process in forming the steady state of the system for a range of parameters, in the family of models considered. A wide variety of quantities characterize the critical behaviour of the…
We present an exact treatment of the hysteresis behavior of the zero-temperature random-field Ising model on a Bethe lattice when it is driven by an external field and evolved according to a 2-spin-flip dynamics. We focus on lattice connectivities z=2 (the one-dimensional chain) and z=3. For the latter case, we demonstrate the existence of an out-of-equilibrium phase transition, in contrast with the situation found with the standard 1-spin-flip dynamics. We discuss the influence of the degree of cooperativity of the (local) spin dynamics of the nonequilibrium response on the system.
Conserved growth models that exhibit a nonlinear instability in which the height (depth) of isolated pillars (grooves) grows in time are studied by numerical integration and stochastic simulation. When this instability is controlled by the introduction of an infinite series of higher-order nonlinear terms, these models exhibit, as function of a control parameter, a non-equilibrium phase transition between a kinetically rough phase with self-affine scaling and a phase that exhibits mound formation, slope selection and power-law coarsening.
A new type of quantum transfer matrix, arising as a Cholesky factor for the steady state density matrix of a dissipative Markovian process associated with the boundary-driven Lindblad equation for the isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg (XXX) chain, is presented. The transfer matrix forms a commuting family of non-Hermitian operators depending on the spectral parameter which is essentially the strength of dissipative coupling at the boundaries. The intertwining of the corresponding Lax and monodromy matrices is performed by an infinitely dimensional Yang-Baxter R-matrix which we construct explicitly…
We consider the effects of a quench to T = 0 on a spin system with axial next-next nearest neighbour Ising interactions, evolving under a conserved 3-spin flip dynamics. Such a model is motivated by the kinetics of stacking layers in polytypes near the 3C-6H transition. We find that the system generically gets arrested in interesting metastable states which have inhomogeneously distributed quiescent and active regions. In such arrested states, the autocorrelation function decays as a stretched exponential $\sim \exp(-(t/τ_{o})^{1 \over 3})$. The latter feature can be understood in terms of a m…
A link between memory effects in quantum kinetic equations and nonequilibrium correlations associated with the energy conservation is investigated. In order that the energy be conserved by an approximate collision integral, the one-particle distribution function and the mean interaction energy are treated as independent nonequilibrium state parameters. The density operator method is used to derive a kinetic equation in second-order non-Markovian Born approximation and an evolution equation for the nonequilibrium quasi-temperature which is thermodynamically conjugated to the mean interaction en…
Motivated by short-range Ising spin glasses, we review some rigorous results and their consequences for the relation between the number/nature of equilibrium pure states and nonequilibrium dynamics. Two of the consequences for spin glass dynamics following a deep quench to a temperature with broken spin flip symmetry are: (1) Almost all initial configurations lie on the boundary between the basins of attraction of multiple pure states. (2) Unless there are uncountably many pure states with almost all pairs having zero overlap, there can be no equilibration to a pure state as time goes to infin…
We numerically study the three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson model with Gaussian couplings, focusing on the heterogeneities arising in its nonequilibrium dynamics. Results are analyzed in terms of the backbone picture, which links strong dynamical heterogeneities to spatial heterogeneities emerging from the correlation of local rigidity of the bond network. Different two-times quantities as the flipping time distribution and the correlation and response functions, are evaluated over the full system and over high- and low-rigidity regions. We find that the nonequilibrium dynamics of the model is…
The dynamical response of an Ising ferromagnet to a plane polarised standing magnetic field wave is modelled and studied here by Monte Carlo simulation in two dimensions. The amplitude of standing magnetic wave is modulated along the direction x. We have detected two main dynamical phases namely, pinned and oscillating spin clusters. Depending on the value of field amplitude the system is found to undergo a phase transition from oscillating spin cluster to pinned as the system is cooled down. The time averaged magnetisation over a full cycle of magnetic field oscillations is defined as the dyn…
Irreversible opinion spreading phenomena are studied on small-world networks generated from 2D regular lattices by means of the magnetic Eden model, a nonequilibrium kinetic model for the growth of binary mixtures in contact with a thermal bath. In this model, the opinion or decision of an individual is affected by those of their acquaintances, but opinion changes (analogous to spin flips in an Ising-like model) are not allowed. Particularly, we focus on aspects inherent to the underlying 2D nature of the substrate, such as domain growth and cluster size distributions. Larger shortcut fraction…
The integrable system is constrained strictly by the conservation law during the time evolution, and the nearly integrable system or nonintegrable system is also constrained by the conserved parameters (like the constants of motion) with corresponding generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) which is indubitability a powerful tool in the prediction of thr relaxation dynamics. For stochastic evolution dynamic with considerable noise, the obviously quantum or thermal correlations which don't exhibit the thermal behavior, (like the density of kinks or transverse magnetization correlators), display a asym…
Nonequilibrium phase transition properties of a mixed Ising ferrimagnetic model consisting of spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 on a square lattice under the existence of a time dependent oscillating magnetic field have been investigated by making use of Monte Carlo simulations with single-spin flip Metropolis algorithm. A complete picture of dynamic phase boundary and magnetization profiles have been illustrated and the conditions of a dynamic compensation behavior have been discussed in detail. According to our simulation results, the considered system does not point out a dynamic compensation behavior,…
The dynamical responses of random field Ising model at zero temperature, driven by standing magnetic field wave, is studied by Monte Carlo simulation in two dimensions. The three different kinds of distribution of quenched random field are used here, uniform, bimodal and Gaussian. In all cases, three distinct dynamical phases were observed, namely, the pinned, structured and random. In the pinned phase no spin flip is observed. In the structured phase standing spin wave modes are observed. The random phase is shown no regular pattern. For a fixed value of the amplitude of the standing magnetic…
There is a growing interest in the stochastic processes of nonequilibrium systems subject to non-conserved forces, such as the magnetic forces acting on charged particles and the chiral self-propelled force acting on active particles. In this paper, we consider the stationary transport of non-interacting Brownian particles under a constant magnetic field in a position-dependent temperature background. We demonstrate the existence of the Nernst-like stationary density current perpendicular to both the temperature gradient and magnetic field, induced by the intricate coupling between the non-con…
We present a numerical study on the ordering dynamics of a one-dimensional nonequilibrium Ising spin system with chirality. This system is characterized by a direction-dependent spin update rule. Pairs of $+-$ spins can flip to $++$ or $--$ with probability $(1-u)$ or to $-+$ with probability $u$ while $-+$ pairs are frozen. The system was found to evolve into the ferromagnetic ordered state at any $u<1$ exhibiting the power-law scaling of the characteristic length scale $ξ\sim t^{1/z}$ and the domain wall density $ρ\sim t^{-δ}$. The scaling exponents $z$ and $δ$ were found to vary continuousl…
We review recent progress on constructing non-equilibrium steady state density operators of boundary driven locally interacting quantum chains, where driving is implemented via Markovian dissipation channels attached to the chain's ends. We discuss explicit solutions in three different classes of quantum chains, specifically, the paradigmatic (anisotropic) Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain, the Fermi-Hubbard chain, and the Lai-Sutherland spin-1 chain, and discuss universal concepts which characterize these solutions, such as matrix product ansatz and a more structured walking graph state ansatz. The c…
The two-time nonequilibrium correlation and response functions in 1D kinetic classical spin systems with non-conserved dynamics and quenched to their zero-temperature critical point are studied. The exact solution of the kinetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics for a wide class of initial states allows for an explicit test of the universality of the non-equilibrium limit fluctuation-dissipation ratio X_{\infty}. It is shown that the value of X_{\infty} depends on whether the initial state has finitely many domain walls or not and thus two distinct dynamic universality classes can be identifie…
We study the nonequilibrium properties of directed Ising models with non conserved dynamics, in which each spin is influenced by only a subset of its nearest neighbours. We treat the following models: (i) the one-dimensional chain; (ii) the two-dimensional square lattice; (iii) the two-dimensional triangular lattice; (iv) the three-dimensional cubic lattice. We raise and answer the question: (a) Under what conditions is the stationary state described by the equilibrium Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution? We show that for models (i), (ii), and (iii), in which each spin "sees" only half of its neighbo…
Following quenches from random initial configurations to zero temperature, we study aging during evolution of the ferromagnetic (nonconserved) Ising model towards equilibrium, via Monte Carlo simulations of very large systems, in space dimensions $d=2$ and $3$. Results for the two-time autocorrelations, obtained by using different acceptance probabilities for the spin-flip trial moves, are in agreement with each other. We demonstrate the scaling of this quantity with respect to $\ell/\ell_w$, where $\ell$ and $\ell_w$ are the average domain sizes at $t$ and $t_w$ $(\leqslant t)$, the observati…
We elucidate a non-conserved relaxational nonequilibrium dynamics of a O(2) symmetric model. We drive the system out of equilibrium by introducing a non-zero noise cross-correlation of amplitude $D_\times$ in a stochastic Langevin description of the system, while maintaining the O(2) symmetry of the order parameter space. By performing dynamic renormalization group calculations in a field-theoretic set up, we analyze the ensuing nonequilibrium steady states and evaluate the scaling exponents near the critical point, which now depend explicitly on $D_\times$. Since the latter remains unrenormal…
The nonequilibrium steady state of an infinite-range Ising model is studied. The steady state is obtained by dividing the spins into two groups and attaching them to two heat baths generating spin flips at different temperatures. In the thermodynamic limit, the resulting dynamics can be solved exactly, and the probability flow in the phase space can be visualized. We can calculate the steady state fluctuations far from equilibrium and, in particular, we find the exact probability distribution of the energy current in both the high- and low-temperature phase.
We propose to investigate the full counting statistics of nonequilibrium spin transport with an ultracold atomic quantum gas. The setup makes use of the spin control available in atomic systems to generate spin transport induced by an impurity atom immersed in a spin-imbalanced two-component Fermi gas. In contrast to solid-state realizations, in ultracold atoms spin relaxation and the decoherence from external sources is largely suppressed. As a consequence, once the spin current is turned off by manipulating the internal spin degrees of freedom of the Fermi system, the nonequilibrium spin pop…
In nonequilibrium classical thermostatistics, the state of a system may be described by not only dynamical/thermodynamical variables but also a kinetic distribution function. This "double structure" bears some analogy with that in quantum thermodynamics, where both dynamical variables and the Hilbert space are involved. Recently, the concept of weak invariants has repeatedly been discussed in the context of quantum thermodynamics. A weak invariant is defined in such a way that its value changes in time but its expectation value is conserved under time evolution prescribed by a kinetic equation…
The concept of weak invariants has recently been introduced in the context of conserved quantities in finite-time processes in nonequilibrium quantum thermodynamics. A weak invariant itself has a time-dependent spectrum, but its expectation value remains constant under time evolution defined by a relevant master equation. Although its expectation value is thus conserved by definition, its fluctuation is not. Here, time evolution of such a fluctuation is studied. It is shown that if the subdynamics is given by a completely positive map, then the fluctuation of the associated weak invariant does…
