The shapes of individual self-gravitating structures of an ensemble of identical, collisionless particles have remained elusive for decades. In particular, a reason why mass density profiles like the Navarro-Frenk-White or the Einasto profile are good fits to simulation- and observation-based dark matter halos has not been found. Given the class of three dimensional, spherically symmetric power-law probability density distributions to locate individual particles in the ensemble mentioned above, we derive the constraining equation for the power-law index for the most and least likely joint ensemble configurations. We find that any dark matter halo can be partitioned into three regions: a core, an intermediate part, and an outskirts part up to boundary radius $r_\mathrm{max}$. The power-law index of the core is determined by the mean radius of the particle distribution within the core. The intermediate region becomes isothermal in the limit of infinitely many particles. The slope of the mass density profile far from the centre is determined by the choice of $r_\mathrm{max}$ with respect to the outmost halo particle, such that two typical limiting cases arise that explain the $r^{-3}$-slope for galaxy-cluster outskirts and the $r^{-4}$-slope for galactic outskirts. Hence, we succeed in deriving the mass density profiles of common fitting functions from a general viewpoint. These results also allow to find a simple explanation for the cusp-core-problem and to separate the halo description from its dynamics.
The bias of dark matter halos and galaxies is a crucial quantity in many cosmological analyses. In this work, using large cosmological simulations, we explore the halo mass function and halo bias within cosmic voids. For the first time to date, we show that they are scale-dependent along the void profile, and provide a predictive theoretical model of both the halo mass function and halo bias inside voids, recovering for the latter and 1% accuracy against simulated data. These findings may help shed light on the dynamics of halo formation within voids and improve the analysis of several void st…

Evidence shows properties of dark matter haloes may vary with large-scale environment. By studying the halo occupation distribution in cosmic voids it is possible to obtain useful information that can shed light on the subject. The history of the formation of the haloes and galaxies residing in these regions is likely to differ from the global behaviour given their extreme environment. We use two public access simulated galaxy catalogues constructed with different methods: a semi-analytical model and a hydrodynamic simulation. In both, we identify cosmic voids and we measure the halo occupatio…
We use the Separate Universe technique to calibrate the dependence of linear and quadratic halo bias $b_1$ and $b_2$ on the local cosmic web environment of dark matter haloes. We do this by measuring the response of halo abundances at fixed mass and cosmic web tidal anisotropy $α$ to an infinite wavelength initial perturbation. We augment our measurements with an analytical framework developed in earlier work which exploits the near-Lognormal shape of the distribution of $α$ and results in very high precision calibrations. We present convenient fitting functions for the dependence of $b_1$ and…
We study the formation and destruction of the first molecules at the epochs of the Dark Ages and Cosmic Dawn to evaluate the luminosity of the protogalaxy clumps (halos) in the molecular lines. The cosmological recombination is described using the model of an effective three-level atom, while the chemistry of the molecules is examined using the relevant basic kinetic equations. We then studied the effect of collisional and radiative excitation of molecules on the intensity of molecular emission in both warm and hot halos. Using the Planck data on the reionization of the intergalactic medium at…
We estimate the halo mass function (HMF) by applying the excursion set approach to the non-linear cosmic density field. Thereby, we account for the non-Gaussianity of today's density distribution and constrain the HMF independent of the linear collapse threshold $δ_{\textrm{crit}}$. We consider a spherical region as a halo, if its density today exceeds the virial overdensity threshold $Δ$. We model the probability distribution of the non-linear density field by a superposition of a Gaussian and a lognormal distribution, which we constrain with the bispectrum of density fluctuations, predicted …
We explore the evolution of halo spins in the cosmic web using a very large sample of dark matter haloes in the $Λ$CDM Planck-Millennium N-body simulation. We use the NEXUS+ multiscale formalism to identify the hierarchy of filaments and sheets of the cosmic web at several redshifts. We find that at all times the magnitude of halo spins correlates with the web environment, being largest in filaments, and, for the first time, we show that it also correlates with filament thickness as well as the angle between spin-orientation and the spine of the host filament. For example, massive haloes in th…
The gravitational coupling between large-scale perturbations and small-scale perturbations leads to anisotropic distortions of the small-scale matter distribution. The measured local small-scale power spectrum can thus be used to infer the large-scale matter distribution. In this paper, we present a new tidal reconstruction algorithm for reconstructing large-scale modes using the full three-dimensional tidal shear information. We apply it to simulated dark matter halo fields and the reconstructed large-scale density field correlates well with the original matter density field on large scales, …
We perform for the first time N-body simulations of Interacting Dark Energy assuming non-Gaussian initial conditions, with the aim of investigating possible degeneracies of these two theoretically independent phenomena in different observational probes. We focus on the large-scale matter distribution, as well as on the statistical and structural properties of collapsed halos and cosmic voids. On very large scales, we show that it is possible to choose the Interaction and non-Gaussian parameters such that their effects on the halo power spectrum cancel, and the power spectrum is indistinguishab…
We study the effect of baryons on the cosmic web -- halos, filaments, walls, and voids. To do so, we apply a modified version of NEXUS, a cosmic web morphological analysis algorithm, to the IllustrisTNG simulations. We find that halos lose more than $10\%$ of their mass due to baryons, mostly to filaments and a small portion to walls and voids. However, the mass transfer does not significantly shift the boundaries of structures, leaving the volume fractions of the cosmic structures largely unaffected. We quantify the effects of baryonic feedback on the power spectrum and the probability densit…
A number of methods for studying the large-scale cosmic matter distribution exist in the literature. One particularly common method employed to define the cosmic web is to examine the density, velocity or potential field. Such methods are advantageous since a Hessian matrix can be constructed whose eigenvectors (and eigenvalues) indicate the principal directions (and strength) of local collapse or expansion. Technically this is achieved by diagonalizing the Hessian matrix using a fixed finite grid. The resultant large-scale structure quantification is thus inherently limited by the grid's fini…

We present a new technique that allows us to compute ensemble statistics on a local basis, directly relating halo properties to their local environment. This is achieved by the use of a correlated ensemble in which the Large Scale Structure is common to all realizations while having each an independent halo population. The correlated ensemble can be stacked, effectively increasing the halo number density by an arbitrary factor, thus breaking the fundamental limit in the halo number density given by the haloe mass function. This technique allows us to compute \textit{local ensemble statistics} …
We investigate the alignment of haloes with the filaments of the cosmic web using an unprecedently large sample of dark matter haloes taken from the P-Millennium $Λ$CDM cosmological N-body simulation. We use the state-of-the-art NEXUS morphological formalism which, due to its multiscale nature, simultaneously identifies structures at all scales. We find strong and highly significant alignments, with both the major axis of haloes and their peculiar velocity tending to orient along the filament. However, the spin - filament alignment displays a more complex trend changing from preferentially par…
We study the effects of the local environmental density and the cosmic web environment (filaments, walls, and voids) on key properties of dark matter halos using the Bolshoi-Planck LCDM cosmological simulation. The z = 0 simulation is analysed into filaments, walls, and voids using the SpineWeb method and also the VIDE package of tools, both of which use the watershed transform. The key halo properties that we study are the specific mass accretion rate, spin parameter, concentration, prolateness, scale factor of the last major merger, and scale factor when the halo had half of its z = 0 mass. …
Baryons both increase halo concentration through adiabatic contraction and expel mass through feedback processes. However, it is not well understood how the radiation fields prevalent during the epoch of reionization affect the evolution of concentration in dark matter halos. We investigate how baryonic physics during the epoch of reionization modify the structure of dark matter halos in the Cosmic Reionization On Computers (CROC) simulations. We use two different measures of halo concentration to quantify the effects. We compare concentrations of halos matched between full physics simulations…
The connections among galaxies, the dark matter halos where they form and the properties of the large-scale Cosmic Web still need to be completely disentangled. We use the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation TNG100 of the IllustrisTNG suite to quantify the effects played by the large-scale density field and the Cosmic Web morphology on the relation between halo mass and galaxy stellar mass. We select objects with total dynamical mass in the range $\geq 6.3\times 10^{10} h ^{-1}\, M_{\odot}$ up to a few $10^{14} h^{-1} \, M_{\odot}$ between redshift $z=4$ and redshift $z=0$. A Cosmic Web cla…
The non-linear cosmic web environment of dark matter haloes plays a major role in shaping their growth and evolution, and potentially also affects the galaxies that reside in them. We develop an analytical (halo model) formalism to describe the tidal field of anisotropic halo-centric density distributions, as characterised by the halo-centric tidal tensor $\langle T_{ij} \rangle(<R)$ spherically averaged on scale $R\sim4R_{\rm vir}$ for haloes of virial radius $R_{\rm vir}$. We focus on axisymmetric anisotropies, which allows us to explore simple and intuitive toy models of (sub)halo configura…
We examine the reionization history of present-day galaxies by explicitly tracing the building blocks of halos from the Cosmic Reionization On Computers project. We track dark matter particles that belong to $z=0$ halos to trace the neutral fractions at corresponding positions during rapid global reionization. The resulting particle reionization histories allow us to explore different definitions of a halo's reionization redshift and to account for the neutral content of the interstellar medium. Consistent with previous work, we find a systematic trend of reionization redshift with mass - pres…
We investigate the splashback features of dark-matter halos based on cosmic density and velocity fields. Besides the density correlation function binned by the halo orientation angle which was used in the literature, we introduce, for the first time, the corresponding velocity statistic, alignment momentum correlation function, to take into account the asphericity of halos. Using large-volume, high-resolution N-body simulations, we measure the alignment statistics of density and velocity. On halo scales, $x\sim R_\mathrm{200m} \sim 1Mpc/h$, we detect a sharp steepening in the momentum correlat…

We present a novel halo painting network that learns to map approximate 3D dark matter fields to realistic halo distributions. This map is provided via a physically motivated network with which we can learn the non-trivial local relation between dark matter density field and halo distributions without relying on a physical model. Unlike other generative or regressive models, a well motivated prior and simple physical principles allow us to train the mapping network quickly and with relatively little data. In learning to paint halo distributions from computationally cheap, analytical and non-li…
