We introduce a class of non-Hermitian systems that break electromagnetic reciprocity while preserving time-reversal symmetry, and describe its novel polarization dynamics. We show that this class of systems can be realized using van der Waals heterostructures involving transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Our work provides a path towards achieving strong optical nonreciprocity and polarization-dependent directional amplification using compact, large-area and magnet-free structures.
Nonreciprocal transmission is the fundamental process behind unidirectional wave propagation phenomena. In our work, a compact and practical parity-time (PT) symmetric metamaterial is designed based on two Silicon Carbide (SiC) media separated by an air gap and photonically doped with gain and loss defects. We demonstrate that an exceptional point (EP) is formed in this PT-symmetric system when SiC operates as a practical epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) material and by taking into account its moderate optical loss. Furthermore and even more importantly, strong self-induced nonreciprocal transmission i…
Nonreciprocal transmission forms the basic operation mechanism of optical diodes and isolators and requires the tantalizing task of breaking the Lorentz reciprocity law. In this work, strong nonreciprocal transmission is demonstrated by using a compact nonlinear parity-time (PT) symmetric system based on epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials photonically doped with gain and loss defects and separated by an ultrathin air gap. The nonlinear response of this scalable configuration is triggered at relatively low optical intensities due to the strong electric field confinement in the defects. The extre…
This article aims at discussing computational approach to design magnet-free nonreciprocal metamaterial. Detailed mathematical derivation on floquet mode analysis is presented for Faraday and Kerr rotation. Non-reciprocity in the designed metasurface is achieved in the presence of biased transistor loaded in the gap of circular ring resonator. Based on the synthesized mathematical model, We extract co-cross polarized components as well as Faraday and Kerr rotation from the developed synthesized model and compare/contrast reciprocal and nonreciprocal system.
Time has emerged as a new degree of freedom for metamaterials, promising new pathways in wave control. However, electromagnetism suffers from limitations in the modulation speed of material parameters. Here we argue that these limitations can be circumvented by introducing a traveling-wave refractive index modulation, with the same phase velocity of the waves. We show how the concept of "luminal grating" can yield giant nonreciprocity, achieve efficient one-way amplification, pulse compression and frequency up-conversion, proposing a realistic implementation in double-layer graphene.
We theoretically demonstrate a non-hermitian metamaterial exhibiting broadband and wide-angle nonreciprocity. The metamaterial consists of planar metal-dielectric layers with a Parity-Time (PT) symmetric distrubtion of loss and gain. With increasing loss and gain, the bandstructure and bandgap are strongly modified; further, the PT potential leads to distinct internal field distributions when illuminated from different sides. Including nonlinearities arising from natural loss and gain saturation leads to nonreciprocal transmission in the visible over a 50 nm wavelength and 60$^{\circ}$ degree …
This article aims at developing a simple, automated test bench procedure to measure polarization rotation of an electromagnetic wave upon propagation through a nonreciprocal medium. A comprehensive measurement approach is developed from the scattering matrix. The proposed measurement procedure is demonstrated using an electronically tunable nonreciprocal metamaterial, and the accuracy of the proposed method is compared with the well-accepted conventional measurement technique.
Photonic nonreciprocal components, such as isolators and circulators, provide highly desirable functionalities for optical circuitry. This motivates the active investigation of mechanisms that break reciprocity, and pose alternatives to magneto-optic effects in on-chip systems. In this work, we use optomechanical interactions to strongly break reciprocity in a compact system. We derive minimal requirements to create nonreciprocity in a wide class of systems that couple two optical modes to a mechanical mode, highlighting the importance of optically biasing the modes at a controlled phase diffe…
Metamaterials with artificial optical properties have attracted significant research interest. In particular, artificial magnetic resonances in non-unity permeability tensor at optical frequencies in metamaterials have been reported. However, only non-unity diagonal elements of the permeability tensor have been demonstrated to date. A gyromagnetic permeability tensor with non-zero off-diagonal elements has not been observed at the optical frequencies. Here we report the observation of gyromagnetic properties in the near-infrared wavelength range in a magneto-plasmonic metamaterial. The non-zer…
Here, inspired by the operation of conventional semiconductor transistors, we introduce a novel class of bulk materials with nonreciprocal and non-Hermitian electromagnetic response. Our analysis shows that material nonlinearities combined with a static electric bias may lead to a linearized permittivity tensor that lacks the Hermitian and transpose symmetries. Remarkably, the material can either dissipate or generate energy, depending on the relative phase of the electric field components. We introduce a simple design for an electromagnetic isolator based on an idealized "MOSFET-metamaterial"…
Coherent thermal emission for a given polarization has been observed in many metamaterials with micro/nanostructures. A complete description of the thermal emission requires the full characterization of the spectral angular emissivity for all polarization states. Emissivity is typically obtained based on the equivalence between the absorptivity and emissivity according to Kirchhoff's law; however, such relation may be invalid for nonreciprocal media. More general approaches without the constrain of optical reciprocity are necessary when dealing with magneto-optical materials and magnetic Weyl …

Zero-index metamaterials (ZIMs) feature a uniform electromagnetic mode over a large area in arbitrary shapes, enabling many applications including high-transmission supercouplers with arbitrary shapes, direction-independent phase matching for nonlinear optics, and collective emission of many quantum emitters. However, most ZIMs reported till date are passive, with no method for the dynamic modulation of their electromagnetic properties. Here, we design and fabricate a magnetically tunable ZIM consisting of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) pillars sandwiched between two copper clad laminates in the mi…
Within the paradigm of metamaterials and metasurfaces, electromagnetic properties of composite materials can be engineered by shaping or modulating their constituents, so-called meta-atoms. Synthesis and analysis of complex-shape meta-atoms with general polarization properties is a challenging task. In this paper, we demonstrate that the most general response can be conceptually decomposed into a set of basic, fundamental polarization phenomena, which enables immediate all-direction characterization of electromagnetic properties of arbitrary linear metamaterials and metasurfaces. The proposed …
