In this paper, we obtain the Nth-order rational solutions for the defocusing nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation by the Darboux transformation and some limit technique. Then, via an improved asymptotic analysis method relying on the balance between different algebraic terms, we derive the explicit expressions of all asymptotic solitons of the rational solutions with the order 1<=N<=4. It turns out that the asymptotic solitons are localized in the straight or algebraic curves, and the exact solutions approach the curved asymptotic solitons with a slower rate than the straight ones. Moreover, we find that all the rational solutions exhibit just five different types of soliton interactions, and the interacting solitons are divided into two halves with each having the same amplitudes. Particularly for the curved asymptotic solitons, there may exist a slight difference for their velocities between at t and -t with certain parametric condition. In addition, we reveal that the soliton interactions in the rational solutions with N>=2 are stronger than those in the exponential and exponential-and-rational solutions.
By using the Darboux transformation, we obtain two new types of exponential-and-rational mixed soliton solutions for the defocusing nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We reveal that the first type of solution can display a large variety of interactions among two exponential solitons and two rational solitons, in which the standard elastic interaction properties are preserved and each soliton could be either the dark or antidark type. By developing the asymptotic analysis technique, we also find that the second type of solution can exhibit the elastic interactions among four mixed asympto…
Nonlinear Schrödinger equation, short pulse equation and complex short pulse equation have important application in nonlinear optics. They can be derived from the Maxwell equation. In this paper, we investigate a coupled focusing-defocusing complex short pulse equation. The bright-bright, bright-dark and dark-dark soliton solutions of the coupled focusing-defocusing complex short pulse equation are given. Then the breathers are derived from the dark soliton solution. The rogue wave solutions are also constructed. The dynamics and the asymptotic behavior of the soliton solutions are analyzed, w…

In this paper, we show that the nonlocal discrete focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) and nonlocal discrete defocusing NLS equation are gauge equivalent to the discrete coupled Heisenberg ferromagnet (HF) equation and the discrete modified coupled HF equation, respectively. Under the continuous limit, the discrete coupled HF equation and the modified discrete coupled HF equation lead to the corresponding coupled HF equation and modified coupled HF equation. This means that the nonlocal focusing and defocusing NLS equations are gauge equivalent to the coupled HF and coupled modified HF equatio…
It has been conjectured that the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation on the half-line does not admit solitons. We give a proof of this conjecture.
In this paper, we obtain a uniform Darboux transformation for multi-component coupled NLS equations, which can be reduced to all previous presented Darboux transformation. As a direct application, we derive the single dark soliton and multi-dark soliton solutions for multi-component coupled NLS with defocusing case and mixed focusing and defocusing case. Some exact single and two-dark solitons of three-component NLS equation are shown by plotting the picture.
In this paper, we propose a complex short pulse equation of both focusing and defocusing types, which governs the propagation of ultra-short pulses in nonlinear optical fibers. It can be viewed as an analogue of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation in the ultra-short pulse regime. Furthermore, we construct the multi-dark soliton solution for the defocusing complex short pulse equation through the Darboux transformation and reciprocal (hodograph) transformation. One- and two-dark soliton solutions are given explicitly, whose properties and dynamics are analyzed and illustrated.
We address the degree of universality of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam recurrence induced by multisoliton fission from a harmonic excitation by analysing the case of the semiclassical defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation, which models nonlinear wave propagation in a variety of physical settings. Using a suitable Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approach to the solution of the associated scattering problem we accurately predict, in full analytical way, the number and the features (amplitude and velocity) of soliton-like excitations emerging post-breaking, as a function of the dispersion smallness paramete…
In this paper, we try to understand the geometry for a nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation (nonlocal NLS) and its discrete version introduced by Ablowitz and Musslimani. We show that, under the gauge transformations, the nonlocal focusing NLS and the nonlocal defocusing NLS are, respectively, gauge equivalent to a Heisenberg-like equation and a modified Heisenberg-like equation, and their discrete versions are, respectively, gauge equivalent to a discrete Heisenberg-like equation and a discrete modified Heisenberg-like equation. From the gauge equivalence, although the geometry related to …
In this paper, we consider the initial value problem for both of the defocusing and focusing Kundu-Eckhaus (KE) equation with non-zero boundary conditions (NZBCs) at infinity by inverse scattering transform method. The solutions of the KE equation with NZBCs can be reconstructed in terms of the solution of an associated $2 \times 2$ matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem (RHP). In our formulation, both the direct and the inverse problems are posed in terms of a suitable uniformization variable which allows us to develop the IST on the standard complex plane instead of a two-sheeted Riemann surface or …
In this paper, we are concerned with a a semi-discrete complex short pulse (CSP) equation of both focusing and defocusing types, which can be viewed as an analogue to the Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) lattice in the ultra-short pulse regime. By using a generalized Darboux transformation method, various solutions to this newly integrable semi-discrete equation are studied with both zero and nonzero boundary conditions. To be specific, for the focusing CSP equation, the multi-bright solution (zero boundary condition), multi-breather and high-order rogue wave solutions (nonzero boudanry conditions) are der…

We present a unified theoretical study of the bright solitons governed by self-focusing and defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations with generalized parity-time (PT)-symmetric Scarff II potentials. Particularly, a PT-symmetric k-wavenumber Scarff II potential and a multi-well Scarff II potential are considered, respectively. For the k-wavenumber Scarff II potential, the parameter space can be divided into different regions, corresponding to unbroken and broken PT-symmetry and the bright solitons for self-focusing and defocusing Kerr nonlinearities. For the multi-well Scarff II potenti…
In the present paper, we study the defocusing complex short pulse (CSP) equations both geometrically and algebraically. From the geometric point of view, we establish a link of the complex coupled dispersionless (CCD) system with the motion of space curves in Minkowski space $\mathbf{R}^{2,1}$, then with the defocusing CSP equation via a hodograph (reciprocal) transformation, the Lax pair is constructed naturally for the defocusing CSP equation. We also show that the CCD system of both the focusing and defocusing types can be derived from the fundamental forms of surfaces such that their curve…
We find one- and two-soliton solutions of shifted nonlocal NLS and MKdV equations. We discuss the singular structures of these soliton solutions and present some of the graphs of them.
In this paper, we introduce the reverse-space and reverse-space-time nonlocal discrete derivative nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equations through the nonlocal symmetry reductions of the semi-discrete Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation. The muti-soliton solutions of two types of nonlocal discrete derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equations are derived by means of the Hirota bilinear method and reduction approach. We also investigate the dynamics of soliton solutions and reveal the rich soliton structures in the reverse-space and reverse-space-time nonlocal discrete DNLS equations. Our investigation shows …
We study the nonlocal modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equations obtained from AKNS scheme by Ablowitz-Musslimani type nonlocal reductions. We first find soliton solutions of the coupled mKdV system by using the Hirota direct method. Then by using the Ablowitz-Musslimani reduction formulas, we find one-, two-, and three-soliton solutions of local and nonlocal complex mKdV and mKdV equations. The soliton solutions of these equations are of two types. We give one-soliton solutions of both types and present only first type of two- and three-soliton solutions. We illustrate our soliton solutions …
We first construct a $(2+1)$-dimensional negative AKNS hierarchy and then we give all possible local and (discrete) nonlocal reductions of these equations. We find Hirota bilinear forms of the negative AKNS hierarchy and give one- and two-soliton solutions. By using the soliton solutions of the negative AKNS hierarchy we find one-soliton solutions of the local and nonlocal reduced equations.
Nonlocal reductions of a nonisospectral (2+1)-dimensional breaking soliton Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur equation are discussed on the base of double Wronskian reduction technique. Various types of solutions, including soliton solutions and Jordan-block solutions, for the resulting nonlocal equations are derived. Dynamics of these obtained solutions are analyzed and illustrated.
We extend the Riemann-Hilbert (RH) method to study the inverse scattering transformation and high-order pole solutions of the focusing and defocusing nonlocal (reverse-space-time) modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equations with nonzero boundary conditions (NZBCs) at infinity and successfully find its multiple soliton solutions with one high-order pole and multiple high-order poles. By introducing the generalized residue formula, we overcome the difficulty caused by calculating the residue conditions corresponding to the higher-order poles. In accordance with the Laurent series of reflection c…
We study the local and shifted nonlocal reductions of the integrable coupled Kundu type system. We then consider particular cases of this system; namely Chen-Lee-Liu, Gerdjikov-Ivanov, and Kaup-Newell systems. We obtain one- and two-soliton solutions of these systems and their local and shifted nonlocal reductions by the Hirota bilinear method. We present particular examples for one- and two-soliton solutions of the reduced local and shifted nonlocal Chen-Lee-Liu, Gerdjikov-Ivanov, and Kaup-Newell equations.
In this paper, we prove that the nonlocal complex modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation introduced by Ablowitz and Musslimani [Nonlinearity, 29, 915-946 (2016)] is gauge equivalent to a spin-like model. From the gauge equivalence, one can see that there exists significant difference between the nonlocal complex mKdV equation and the classical complex mKdV equation. Through constructing the Darboux transformation(DT) for nonlocal complex mKdV equation, a variety of exact solutions including dark soliton, W-type soliton, M-type soliton and periodic solutions are derived.
In this paper, we construct degenerate soliton solutions (which preserve $\cal{PT}$-symmetry/break $\cal{PT}$-symmetry) to the nonlocal Manakov system through a nonstandard bilinear procedure. Here by degenerate we mean the solitons that are present in both the modes which propagate with same velocity. The degenerate nonlocal soliton solution is constructed after briefly indicating the form of nondegenerate one-soliton solution. To derive these soliton solutions, we simultaneously solve the nonlocal Manakov equation and a pair of coupled equations that arise from the zero curvature condition. …
We study standard and nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations obtained from the coupled NLS system of equations (Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur (AKNS) equations) by using standard and nonlocal reductions respectively. By using the Hirota bilinear method we first find soliton solutions of the coupled NLS system of equations then using the reduction formulas we find the soliton solutions of the standard and nonlocal NLS equations. We give examples for particular values of the parameters and plot the function $|q(t,x)|^2$ for the standard and nonlocal NLS equations.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. Using the DBAR generalization of the nonlinear steepest descent method of Deift and Zhou we derive the leading order approximation to the solution of the GP in the solitonic region of space time $|x| < 2t$ for large times and provide bounds for the error which decay as $t \to \infty$ for a general class of initial data whose difference from the non-vanishing background possess's a fixed number of finite moments and derivatives. Using properties of the scattering map for (GP) we derive as a corollary an asymptotic stability …
It is well known that the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation is a very important integrable equation. Ablowitz and Musslimani introduced and investigated an integrable nonlocal NLS equation through inverse scattering transform. Very recently, we proposed an integrable nonlocal modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (mKdV) which can also be found in a paper of Ablowitz and Musslimani. We have constructed the Darboux transformation and soliton solutions for the nonlocal mKdV equation. In this paper, we will investigate further the nonlocal mKdV equation. We will give its exact solutions including…
The concept of quasi-integrability has been examined in the context of deformations of the defocusing non-linear Schrödinger model (NLS). Our results show that the quasi-integrability concept, recently discussed in the context of deformations of the sine-Gordon, Bullough-Dodd and focusing NLS models, holds for the modified defocusing NLS model with dark soliton solutions and it exhibits the new feature of an infinite sequence of alternating conserved and asymptotically conserved charges. For the special case of two dark soliton solutions, where the field components are eigenstates of a space-r…
General soliton solutions to a nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with PT-symmetry for both zero and nonzero boundary conditions {are considered} via the combination of Hirota's bilinear method and the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy reduction method. First, general $N$-soliton solutions with zero boundary conditions are constructed. Starting from the tau functions of the two-component KP hierarchy, it is shown that they can be expressed in terms of either Gramian or double Wronskian determinants. On the contrary, from the tau functions of single component KP hierarchy, genera…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the defocusing Schr$\ddot{\text{o}}$dinger (NLS) equation with a nonzero background $$\begin{align} &iq_t+q_{xx}-2(|q|^2-1)q=0, \nonumber\\ &q(x,0)=q_0(x), \quad \lim_{x \to \pm \infty}q_0(x)=\pm 1. \end{align}$$ Recently, for the space-time region $|x/(2t)|<1$ which is a solitonic region without stationary phase points on the jump contour, Cuccagna and Jenkins presented the asymptotic stability of the $N$-soliton solutions for the NLS equation by using the $\bar{\partial}$ generalization of the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method. Their large-time a…
Inverse scattering transform for the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with local and nonlocal nonlinearities under non-zero boundary conditions
General $N$-solitons in three recently-proposed nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equations are presented. These nonlocal equations include the reverse-space, reverse-time, and reverse-space-time nonlinear Schrödinger equations, which are nonlocal reductions of the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur (AKNS) hierarchy. It is shown that general $N$-solitons in these different equations can be derived from the same Riemann-Hilbert solutions of the AKNS hierarchy, except that symmetry relations on the scattering data are different for these equations. This Riemann-Hilbert framework allows us to identify new t…
We introduce and study a system of coupled nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equations that interpolates between the mixed, focusing-defocusing Manakov system on one hand and a limiting case of the intermediate nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the other. We show that this new system, which we call the intermediate mixed Manakov (IMM) system, admits multi-soliton solutions governed by a complexification of the hyperbolic Calogero-Moser (CM) system. Furthermore, we introduce a spatially periodic version of the IMM system, for which our result is a class of exact solutions governed by a complexifie…
In this paper, we succeed to bilinearize the $\cal{PT}$-invariant nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NNLS) equation through a nonstandard procedure and present more general bright soliton solutions. We achieve this by bilinearizing both the NNLS equation and its associated parity transformed complex conjugate equation in a novel way. The obtained one and two soliton solutions are invariant under combined space and time reversal transformations and are more general than the known ones. Further, by considering the two-soliton solution we bring out certain novel interaction properties of the $\cal{P…
We present a rigorous theory of the inverse scattering transform (IST) for the three-component defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation with initial conditions approaching constant values with the same amplitude as $x\to\pm\infty$. The theory combines and extends to a problem with non-zero boundary conditions three fundamental ideas: (i) the tensor approach used by Beals, Deift and Tomei for $n$-th order scattering problems, (ii) the triangular decompositions of the scattering matrix used by Novikov, Manakov, Pitaevski and Zakharov for the $N$-wave interaction equations, and (iii) a gen…
We consider PT-symmetric, discrete nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation on metric graphs. Soliton solutions are obtained for simplest graph topologies, such as star and tree graphs. Integrability of the problem is shown by proving existence of infinite number of conservation laws.
We study the transverse instability and dynamics of bright soliton stripes in two-dimensional nonlocal nonlinear media. Using a multiscale perturbation method, we derive analytically the first-order correction to the soliton shape, which features an exponential growth in time -- a signature of the transverse instability. The soliton's characteristic timescale associated with its exponential growth,is found to depend on the square root of the nonlocality parameter. This, in turn, highlights the nonlocality-induced suppression of the transverse instability. Our analytical predictions are corrobo…
Ring dark and anti-dark solitons in nonlocal media are found. These structures have, respectively, the form of annular dips or humps on top of a stable continuous-wave background, and exist in a weak or strong nonlocality regime, defined by the sign of a characteristic parameter. It is demonstrated analytically that these solitons satisfy an effective cylindrical Kadomtsev-Petviashvilli (aka Johnson's) equation and, as such, can be written explicitly in closed form. Numerical simulations show that they propagate undistorted and undergo quasi-elastic collisions, attesting to their stability pro…
Some modified (defocusing) non-linear Schrödinger models (MNLS) possess infinite towers of anomalous conservation laws with asymptotically conserved charges. The so-called anomalies of the quasi-conservation laws vanish upon space-time integration for a special ${\cal C}{\cal P}_s{\cal T}_d$ symmetric field configurations. We verify numerically the degree of modifications of the charges around the dark-soliton interaction regions by computing numerically some representative anomalies related to lowest order quasi-conservation laws of the non-integrable cubic-quintic NLS model as a modified (de…
We aim to present and analyze a nonlinear nonlocal reverse-spacetime fifth-order scalar Sasa-Satsuma equation, based on a nonlocal $5 \times 5$ matrix AKNS spectral problem. Starting from a nonlocal matrix AKNS spectral problem, local and nonlocal symmetry relations are derived from a group of rotations. A kind of Riemann-Hilbert problem is formulated, which allows to generate soliton solutions by using vectors lying in the kernel of the matrix Jost solutions. When reflection coefficients are zeros, the jump matrix is the identity and the corresponding Riemann-Hilbert problem yields soliton so…
We report localized nonlinear modes of the self-focusing and defocusing nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger equation with the generalized PT-symmetric Scarf-II, Rosen-Morse, and periodic potentials. Parameter regions are presented for broken and unbroken PT-symmetric phases of linear bounded states and the linear stability of the obtained solitons. Moreover, we numerically explore the dynamical behaviors of solitons and find stable solitons for some given parameters.
We consider the problem of reflectionless propagation of PT-symmetric solitons described by the nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger equation on a line in the framework of the concept of transparent boundary conditions for evolution equations. Transparent boundary conditions for the nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger equation are derived. The absence of backscattering at the artificial boundaries is confirmed by the numerical implementation of the transparent boundary conditions.
We present a rigorous theory of a unified and simple inverse scattering transform (IST) for both focusing and defocusing real nonlocal (reverse-space-time) modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equations with non-zero boundary conditions (NZBCs) at infinity. The IST problems for the nonlocal equations with NZBCs are more complicated then ones for the local equations with NZBCs. The suitable uniformization variable is introduced in order to make the direct and inverse problems be established on a complex plane instead of a two-sheeted Riemann surface. The direct scattering problem establishes the a…
The integrable nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger (NNLS) equation with the self-induced parity-time-symmetric potential [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013) 064105] is investigated, which is an integrable extension of the standard NLS equation. Its novel higher-order rational solitons are found using the nonlocal version of the generalized perturbation (1, N-1)-fold Darboux transformation. These rational solitons illustrate abundant wave structures for the distinct choices of parameters (e.g., the strong and weak interactions of bright and dark rational solitons). Moreover, we also explore the dynamical b…
