One of the most promising quantities for the search of signatures of physics beyond the Standard Model is the anomalous magnetic moment $g-2$ of the muon, where a comparison of the experimental result with the Standard Model estimate yields a deviation of about $3.5~σ$. On the theory side, the largest uncertainty arises from the hadronic sector, namely the hadronic vacuum polarisation and the hadronic light-by-light scattering. I review recent progress in calculating the hadronic contributions to the muon $g-2$ from the lattice and discuss the prospects and challenges to match the precision of the upcoming experiments.
We report progress on calculating the contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon from the disconnected hadronic diagrams with light and strange quarks and the valence QED contribution to the connected diagrams. The lattice QCD calculations use the highly-improved staggered quark (HISQ) formulation. The gauge configurations were generated by the MILC Collaboration with four flavors of HISQ sea quarks with physical sea-quark masses.
In our previous work, the connected and leading disconnected hadronic light-by-light contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment (g - 2) have been computed using lattice QCD ensembles corresponding to physical pion mass generated by the RBC/UKQCD collaboration. However, the calculation is expected to suffer from a significant finite volume error that scales like $1/L^2$ where $L$ is the spatial size of the lattice. In this paper, we demonstrate that this problem is cured by treating the muon and photons in infinite volume, continuum QED, resulting in a weighting function that is pre-co…
We present an update on the ongoing calculations by the Fermilab Lattice, HPQCD, and MILC Collaboration of the leading-order (in electromagnetism) hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. Our project employs ensembles with four flavors of highly improved staggered fermions, physical light-quark masses, and four lattice spacings ranging from $a \approx 0.06$ to 0.15 fm for most of the results thus far.
We introduce a new method for calculating the ${\rm O}(α^3)$ hadronic-vacuum-polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment from ${ab-initio}$ lattice QCD. We first derive expressions suitable for computing the higher-order contributions either from the renormalized vacuum polarization function $\hatΠ(q^2)$, or directly from the lattice vector-current correlator in Euclidean space. We then demonstrate the approach using previously-published results for the Taylor coefficients of $\hatΠ(q^2)$ that were obtained on four-flavor QCD gauge-field configurations with physical light-q…
The quark-line disconnected diagram is a potentially important ingredient in lattice QCD calculations of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. It is also a notoriously difficult one to evaluate. Here, for the first time, we give an estimate of this contribution based on lattice QCD results that have a statistically significant signal, albeit at one value of the lattice spacing and an unphysically heavy value of the $u/d$ quark mass. We use HPQCD's method of determining the anomalous magnetic moment by reconstructing the Adler function from …
Lattice QCD (LQCD) studies for the hadron vacuum polarization (HVP) and its contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment (muon g-2) are reviewed. There currently exists more than 3-sigma deviations in the muon g-2 between the BNL experiment with 0.5 ppm precision and the Standard Model (SM) predictions, where the latter relies on the QCD dispersion relation for the HVP. The LQCD provides an independent crosscheck of the dispersive approaches and important indications for assessing the SM prediction with measurements at ongoing/forthcoming experiments at Fermilab/J-PARC (0.14/0.1 ppm prec…
We measure the hadronic contribution to the vacuum polarisation tensor, and use it to estimate the hadronic contribution to (g-2)_mu, the muon anomalous magnetic moment.
The form factor that yields the light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment is computed in lattice QCD+QED and QED. A non-perturbative treatment of QED is used and is checked against perturbation theory. The hadronic contribution is calculated for unphysical quark and muon masses, and only the diagram with a single quark loop is computed. Statistically significant signals are obtained. Initial results appear promising, and the prospect for a complete calculation with physical masses and controlled errors is discussed.
We report preliminary results for the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. Several ensembles using 2+1 flavors of Möbius domain-wall fermions, generated by the RBC/UKQCD collaborations, are employed to take the continuum and infinite volume limits of finite volume lattice QED+QCD. We find $a_μ^{\rm HLbL} = (7.41\pm6.33)\times 10^{-10}$
The current $3.5σ$ discrepancy between experimental and Standard Model determinations of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $a_μ=(g-2)/2$ can only be extended to the discovery $5σ$ regime through a reduction of both experimental and theoretical uncertainties. On the theory side, this means a determination of the hadronic vacuum polarisation (HVP) contribution to better than 0.5%, a level of precision that demands the inclusion of QCD + QED effects to properly understand how the behaviour of quarks are modified when their electric charges are turned on. The QCDSF collaboration has genera…
After a brief self-contained introduction to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, (g-2), we review the status of lattice calculations of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution and present first results from lattice QCD for the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution. The signal for the latter is consistent with model calculations. While encouraging, the statistical error is large and systematic errors are mostly uncontrolled. The method is applied first to pure QED as a check.
We compute the vacuum polarisation on the lattice in quenched QCD using non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions. Above Q^2 of about 2 GeV^2 the results are very close to the predictions of perturbative QCD. Below this scale we see signs of non-perturbative effects which we can describe by the use of dispersion relations. We use our results to estimate the light quark contribution to the muon's anomalous magnetic moment. We find the result 446(23) x 10^{-10}, where the error only includes statistical uncertainties. Finally we make some comments on the applicability of the Operator Product E…
We describe a new technique (published in Phys. Rev. D89 114501) to determine the contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon coming from the hadronic vacuum polarisation using lattice QCD. Our method uses Padé approximants to reconstruct the Adler function from its derivatives at $q^2=0$. These are obtained simply and accurately from time-moments of the vector current-current correlator at zero spatial momentum. We test the method using strange quark correlators calculated on MILC Collaboration's $n_f = 2+1+1$ HISQ ensembles at multiple values of the lattice spacing, multiple vo…
The experimental value of g-2 of the muon is larger by $4.2 σ$ than the Standard Model prediction based on the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution (HVP) determined from the measured R-ratio, $σ(e^+e^- \! \rightarrow \! \mathit{hadrons})/σ(e^+e^- \! \rightarrow \!μ^+ μ^-)$; the HVP calculated in lattice QCD also significantly exceeds the measured R-ratio value. We show here that these discrepancies can be explained by an undetected contribution to $e^+e^- \! \rightarrow \! \mathit{hadrons}$ as could arise from production of neutral, long-lived hadrons which have not previously been identi…
The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $g_μ-2$, is one of the most promising observables to identify hints for physics beyond the Standard Model. QCD contributions are currently responsible for the largest fraction of the overall theoretical uncertainty in $g_μ-2$. The possibility to determine these hadronic contributions from first principles through lattice QCD calculations has triggered a number of recent studies. Recent proposals to improve the accuracy of lattice determinations are reported. We present an update of our studies of the leading-order hadronic contribution to $g_μ-2$ with…
We report the first result for the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment with all errors systematically controlled. Several ensembles using 2+1 flavors of physical mass Möbius domain-wall fermions, generated by the RBC/UKQCD collaborations, are employed to take the continuum and infinite volume limits of finite volume lattice QED+QCD. We find $a_μ^{\rm HLbL} = 7.87(3.06)_\text{stat}(1.77)_\text{sys}\times 10^{-10}$. Our value is consistent with previous model results and leaves little room for this notoriously difficult hadronic contribution to e…
In this talk I present the current status of a precise first-principles calculation of the quark connected, quark disconnected, and leading QED and strong isospin-breaking contributions to the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations. The lattice data is also combined with experimental $e^+ e^-$ scattering data, consistency between the two datasets is checked, and a combined result with smaller error than the lattice data and $e^+ e^-$ scattering data individually is presented.
We develop a method for lattice QCD calculation of the two-photon exchange (TPE) contribution to the muonic-hydrogen Lamb shift. To demonstrate the feasibility of this method, we also present an exploratory study with a gauge ensemble at $m_π= 142$ MeV. By adopting the infinite-volume reconstruction (IVR) method along with an optimized subtraction scheme, we obtain a preliminary result of the TPE contribution which agrees well with previous calculation using other methods and one magnitude smaller compare to the large $\sim300~μ$eV discrepancy for the proton radius puzzle.
We develop a method for lattice QCD calculation of the two-photon exchange contribution to the muonic-hydrogen Lamb shift. To demonstrate its feasibility, we present the first lattice calculation with a gauge ensemble at $m_π= 142$ MeV. By adopting the infinite-volume reconstruction method along with an optimized subtraction scheme, we obtain $ΔE_{\text{TPE}} = -28.9(4.9)~μ\text{eV} + 93.72~μ\text{eV}/\text{fm}^2 \cdot\langle r_p^2 \rangle$, or $ΔE_{\text{TPE}} = 37.4(4.9)~μ$eV, which is consistent with the previous theoretical results in a range of 20-50 $μ$eV.
We describe the Adler function in Quantum Chromodynamics using a transseries representation within a resurgent framework. The approach is based on a Borel-Ecalle resummation of the infrared renormalons combined with an effective running for the strong coupling. The new approach is flexible enough to give values in agreement with the current Adler function determinations. We then apply our finding to the muon's anomalous magnetic moment studying the possibility of saturating, solely in terms of the vacuum polarization function, the current discrepancy between the best Standard Model value for t…
All lattice-QCD calculations of the hadronic-vacuum-polarization contribution to the muon's anomalous magnetic moment to-date have been performed with degenerate up- and down-quark masses. Here we calculate directly the strong-isospin-breaking correction to $a_μ^{\rm HVP}$ for the first time with physical values of $m_u$ and $m_d$ and dynamical $u$, $d$, $s$, and $c$ quarks, thereby removing this important source of systematic uncertainty. We obtain a relative shift to be applied to lattice-QCD results obtained with degenerate light-quark masses of $δa_μ^{{\rm HVP,} m_u \neq m_d}$= +1.5(7)%, i…
The hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon g-2 is the most troublesome component of its theoretical prediction; (1) it cannot be determined from the other measurable quantities, (2) the dimensional argument and the estimation based on hadronic models imply that the magnitude of this contribution may be comparable to the discrepancy between the standard model prediction and the experimental value. The direct approach to evaluate the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution requires the evaluation of the correlation function of {\it four} hadronic electromagnetic curr…
The leading order hadronic contribution to the muon magnetic moment anomaly, $a^{HAD}_μ$, is determined entirely in the framework of QCD. The result in the light-quark sector, in units of $10^{-10}$, is $a^{HAD}_μ|_{uds} =686 \pm 26$, and in the heavy-quark sector $a^{HAD}_μ|_{c} =14.4 \pm 0.1$, and $a^{HAD}_μ|_{b} =0.29 \pm 0.01$, resulting in $a^{HAD}_μ= 701 \pm 26$. The main uncertainty is due to the current lattice QCD value of the first and second derivative of the electromagnetic current correlator at the origin. Expected improvement in the precision of these derivatives may render this …
The proton-polarizability contribution to the muonic-hydrogen Lamb shift is a major source of theoretical uncertainty in the extraction of the proton charge radius. An empirical evaluation of this effect, based on the proton structure functions, requires a systematically improvable calculation of the "subtraction function", possibly using lattice QCD. We consider a different subtraction point, with the aim of accessing the subtraction function directly in lattice calculations. A useful feature of this subtraction point is that the corresponding contribution of the structure functions to the La…
We study the finite-volume correction on the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon g-2 ($a_μ^{\rm hvp}$) in lattice QCD at (near) physical pion mass using two different volumes: $(5.4~{\rm fm})^4$ and $(8.1~{\rm fm})^4$. We use an optimized AMA technique for noise reduction on $N_f=2+1$ PACS gauge configurations with stout-smeared clover-Wilson fermion action and Iwasaki gauge action at a single lattice cut-off $a^{-1}=2.33$ GeV. The calculation is performed for the quark-connected light-quark contribution in the isospin symmetric limit. We take into account the effects of back…
We present a calculation of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, $a_μ^{\mathrm hvp}$, in lattice QCD employing dynamical up and down quarks. We focus on controlling the infrared regime of the vacuum polarization function. To this end we employ several complementary approaches, including Padé fits, time moments and the time-momentum representation. We correct our results for finite-volume effects by combining the Gounaris-Sakurai parameterization of the timelike pion form factor with the Lüscher formalism. On a subset of our ensembles we have deri…
We compute the leading order hadronic vacuum polarization (LO-HVP) contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $(g_μ-2)$, using lattice QCD. Calculations are performed with four flavors of 4-stout-improved staggered quarks, at physical quark masses and at six values of the lattice spacing down to 0.064~fm. All strong isospin breaking and electromagnetic effects are accounted for to leading order. The infinite-volume limit is taken thanks to simulations performed in volumes of sizes up to 11~fm. Our result for the LO-HVP contribution to $(g_μ-2)$ has a total uncertainty of 0.8\%.…
We study systematic uncertainties in the lattice QCD computation of hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the muon $g-2$. We investigate three systematic effects; finite volume (FV) effect, cutoff effect, and integration scheme dependence. We evaluate the FV effect at the physical pion mass on two different volumes of (5.4 fm$)^4$ and (10.8 fm$)^4$ using the PACS10 configurations at the same cutoff scale. For the cutoff effect, we compare two types of lattice vector operators, which are local and conserved (point-splitting) currents, by varying the cutoff scale on a larger than (1…
We present a method to couple finite-volume QCD to infinite-volume QED by an appropriate twist-averaging procedure. We demonstrate the prescription numerically for the leading-order hadronic contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the electro-magnetic pion mass splitting.
We compute the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon $g-2$ from the charm quark using lattice QCD. The calculation is performed on ensembles generated with dynamical $(u,d,s)$ quarks at the SU(3)$_{\rm f}$ symmetric point with degenerate pion and kaon masses of around 415 MeV. It includes the connected charm contribution, as well as the leading disconnected Wick contraction, involving the correlation between a charm and a light-quark loop. Cutoff effects turn out to be sizeable, which leads us to use lighter-than-physical charm masses, to employ a broad range of lattice s…
We calculate the contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment hadronic vacuum polarization from {the} connected diagrams of up and down quarks, omitting electromagnetism. We employ QCD gauge-field configurations with dynamical $u$, $d$, $s$, and $c$ quarks and the physical pion mass, and analyze five ensembles with lattice spacings ranging from $a \approx 0.06$ to~0.15~fm. The up- and down-quark masses in our simulations have equal masses $m_l$. We obtain, in this world where all pions have the mass of the $π^0$, $10^{10} a_μ^{ll}({\rm conn.}) = 637.8\,(8.8)$, in agreement with independe…
I highlight recent progress in cluster computer technology and assess status and prospects of cluster computers for lattice QCD with respect to the development of QCDOC and apeNEXT. Taking the LatFor test case, I specify a 512-processor QCD-cluster better than 1$/Mflops.
We present an up-to-date analysis of muon $g-2$ evaluations in terms of Mellin-Barnes moments as they might be useful for lattice QCD calculations of $a_μ$. The moments up to 4th order are evaluated directly in terms of $e^+e^-$--annihilation data and improved within the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) Model, supplied with appropriate symmetry breaking mechanisms. The model provides a reliable Effective Lagrangian (BHLS) estimate of the two-body channels plus the $πππ$ channel up to 1.05~GeV, just including the $ϕ$ resonance. The HLS piece accounts for 80\% of the contribution to $a_μ$. The missin…
A new QCD sum rule determination of the leading order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_μ^{\rm hvp}$, is proposed. This approach combines data on $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation into hadrons, perturbative QCD and lattice QCD results for the first derivative of the electromagnetic current correlator at zero momentum transfer, $Π_{\rm EM}^\prime(0)$. The idea is based on the observation that, in the relevant kinematic domain, the integration kernel $K(s)$, entering the formula relating $a_μ^{\rm hvp}$ to $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data, behaves l…
Nonperturbative QCD corrections are important to many low-energy electroweak observables, for example the muon magnetic moment. However, hadronic corrections also play a significant role at much higher energies due to their impact on the running of standard model parameters, such as the electromagnetic coupling. Currently, these hadronic contributions are accounted for by a combination of experimental measurements, effective field theory techniques and phenomenological modeling but ideally should be calculated from first principles. Recent developments indicate that many of the most important …
We review some of the issues that arise in attempts to compute the hadronic corrections to the muon anomalous magnetic moment using Lattice QCD. We concentrate on the dominant contribution, which requires an accurate evaluation of the hadronic vacuum polarization.
In this contribution we present a lattice calculation of the leading-order electromagnetic and strong isospin-breaking (IB) corrections to the quark-connected hadronic-vacuum-polarization (HVP) contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. The results are obtained adopting the RM123 approach in the quenched-QED approximation and using the QCD gauge configurations generated by the ETM Collaboration with $N_f = 2+1+1$ dynamical quarks, at three values of the lattice spacing ($a \simeq 0.062, 0.082, 0.089$ fm), at several lattice volumes and with pion masses between $\simeq 210$ and …
We present a lattice determination of the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, $a_μ^{\rm HVP}$, in the so-called short and intermediate time-distance windows, $a_μ^{\rm SD}$ and $a_μ^{\rm W}$. We employ gauge ensembles produced by the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ flavours of Wilson-clover twisted-mass quarks with masses of all the dynamical quark flavours tuned close to their physical values. The simulations are carried out at three values of the lattice spacing equal to $\simeq 0.057, 0.068$ a…

The measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and its prediction allow for a high-precision test of the Standard Model (SM). In this proceedings article we present ongoing work combining lattice QCD and continuum QED in order to determine an important SM contribution to the magnetic moment, the hadronic light-by-light contribution. We compute the quark-connected contribution in the Mainz position-space approach and investigate the long-distance part of our data using calculations of the $π^0$-pole and charged pion loop contributions.
We present a Lorentz-covariant, Euclidean coordinate-space expression for the hadronic vacuum polarisation, the Adler function and the leading hadronic contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. The representation offers a lot of flexibility for an implementation in lattice QCD. We expect it to be particularly helpful for the quark-line disconnected contributions.
We present a lattice calculation of the leading-order electromagnetic and strong isospin-breaking corrections to the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We employ the gauge configurations generated by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with $N_f = 2+1+1$ dynamical quarks at three values of the lattice spacing ($a \simeq 0.062, 0.082, 0.089$ fm) with pion masses between $\simeq 210$ and $\simeq 450$ MeV. The results are obtained adopting the RM123 approach in the quenched-QED approximation, which neglects the charges of the s…
We present a lattice calculation of the Hadronic Vacuum Polarization (HVP) contribution to the anomalous magnetic moments of the electron, $a_e^{\rm HVP}$, the muon, $a_μ^{\rm HVP}$, and the tau, $a_τ^{\rm HVP}$, including both the isospin-symmetric QCD term and the leading-order strong and electromagnetic isospin-breaking corrections. Moreover, the contribution to $a_μ^{\rm HVP}$ not covered by the MUonE experimen, $a_{MUonE}^{\rm HVP}$, is provided. We get $a_e^{\rm HVP} = 185.8~(4.2) \cdot 10^{-14}$, $a_μ^{\rm HVP} = 692.1~(16.3) \cdot 10^{-10}$, $a_τ^{\rm HVP} = 335.9~(6.9) \cdot 10^{-8}$ …
The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, a_mu, has been measured with an overall precision of 540 ppb by the E821 experiment at BNL. Since the publication of this result in 2004 there has been a persistent tension of 3.5 standard deviations with the theoretical prediction of a_mu based on the Standard Model. The uncertainty of the latter is dominated by the effects of the strong interaction, notably the hadronic vacuum polarisation (HVP) and the hadronic light-by-light (HLbL) scattering contributions, which are commonly evaluated using a data-driven approach and hadronic models, respectively…
We present simple analytic expressions to compute the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon $g$-2 in the space-like region up to next-to-next-to-leading order. These results can be employed in lattice QCD calculations of this contribution as well as in space-like determinations based on scattering data, like that expected from the proposed MUonE experiment at CERN.
In recent years, the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon has triggered a lot of activity in the lattice QCD community because a persistent tension of about $3.5~σ$ is observed between the phenomenological estimate and the Brookhaven measurement. The current best phenomenological estimate has an uncertainty comparable to the experimental one and the error is completely dominated by hadronic effects: the leading order hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution and the hadronic light-by-light (HLbL) scattering contribution. Both are accessible via lattice simulations and a reduction of the…
We compute the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon $g-2$ from the up, down, and strange-quark sector directly using lattice QCD. Our calculation features evaluations of all possible Wick-contractions of the relevant hadronic four-point function and incorporates several different pion masses, volumes, and lattice-spacings. We obtain a value of $a_μ^{\text{Hlbl}} = 106.8(14.7) \times 10^{-11}$ (adding statistical and systematic errors in quadrature), which is consistent with current phenomenological estimates and a previous lattice determination. It now appears conclusive…
