ART$^2$ is a 3D multi-wavelength Monte Carlo radiative transfer (RT) code that couples continuum and emission lines to track the propagation of photons and their interactions with the interstellar medium (ISM). The previous version of ART$^2$, which included continuum and Ly$α$ line, has been extensively applied to hydrodynamics simulations to study multi-band properties of galaxies and ISM. Here, we describe new implementations of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium RT of molecular and atomic fine structure emission lines, and the parallelization of the code using a number of novel methods. The new ART$^2$ can efficiently and self-consistently produce a full spectrum that includes both continuum and lines such as [CII], [NII], [OIII], Ly$α$, and CO. These essential features, together with the multi-phase ISM model and the adaptive grid, make ART$^2$ a multi-purpose code to study multi-wavelength properties of a wide range of astrophysical systems from planetary disks to large-scale structures.
To demonstrate the capability of the new ART$^2$, we applied it to two hydrodynamics simulations: the zoom-in Milky Way Simulation to obtain panchromatic properties of individual galaxies, and the large-scale IllustrisTNG100 Simulation to obtain global properties such as the line intensity mappings. These products are essential for a broad array of studies such as the correlations between physical and panchromatic properties and their evolution. By enabling direct comparison between numerical simulations and multi-band observations, ART$^2$ provides a crucial theoretical framework for the interpretations of existing observations, the plan for future surveys, and the synergy between multi-band galaxy surveys and line intensity mappings. Therefore, ART$^2$ is a powerful and versatile tool to bridge the gap between theories and observations of cosmic structures.
We analyse spatially resolved ALMA observations at 0.9, 1.3, and 3.1 mm for the 26 brightest protoplanetary discs in the Lupus star-forming region. We characterise the discs multi-wavelength brightness profiles by fitting the interferometric visibilities in a homogeneous way, obtaining effective disc sizes at the three wavelengths, spectral index profiles and optical depth estimates. We report three fundamental discoveries: first, the millimeter continuum size - luminosity relation already observed at 0.9 mm is also present at 1.3 mm with an identical slope, and at 3.1 mm with a steeper slope,…
We present a linear analysis of the radiative Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability in the presence of magnetic field for both optically thin and thick regimes. When the flow is optically thin, magnetic field not only stabilizes perturbations with short wavelengths, but also growth rate of the instability at long wavelengths is reduced compared to a nonmagnetized case. Then, we extend our analysis to the optically thick flows with a conserved total specific entropy and properties of the unstable perturbations are investigated in detail. Growth rate of the instability at short wavelengths is suppres…
Aims. We present an implementation of an algorithm for 3D time-dependent Monte Carlo radiative transfer. It allows one to simulate temperature distributions as well as images and spectral energy distributions of the scattered light and thermal reemission radiation for variable illuminating and heating sources embedded in dust distributions, such as circumstellar disks and dust shells on time scales up to weeks. Methods. We extended the publicly available 3D Monte Carlo radiative transfer code POLARIS with efficient methods for the simulation of temperature distributions, scattering, and therma…
Aims: We aim to study the effects of an inhomogeneous interstellar medium (ISM) on the strength and the shape of the Lyman alpha (Lya) line in starburst galaxies. Methods: Using our 3D Monte Carlo Lya radiation transfer code, we study the radiative transfer of Lya, UV and optical continuum photons in homogeneous and clumpy shells of neutral hydrogen and dust surrounding a central source. Our simulations predict the Lya and continuum escape fraction, the Lya equivalent width EW(Lya), the Lya line profile and their dependence on the gas geometry and the main input physical parameters. Results: T…
We present Starduster, a supervised deep learning model that predicts the multi-wavelength SED from galaxy geometry parameters and star formation history by emulating dust radiative transfer simulations. The model is comprised of three specifically designed neural networks, which take into account the features of dust attenuation and emission. We utilise the Skirt radiative transfer simulation to produce data for the training data of neural networks. Each neural network can be trained using ~ 4000 - 5000 samples. Compared with the direct results of the Skirt simulation, our deep learning model…
Recent observations have successfully detected UV or infrared flux from galaxies at the epoch of reionization. However, the origin of their radiative properties has not been fully understood yet. Combining cosmological hydrodynamic simulations and radiative transfer calculations, we present theoretical predictions of multi-wavelength radiative properties of the first galaxies at z=6-15. We find that most of the gas and dust are ejected from star-forming regions due to supernova (SN) feedback, which allows UV photons to escape. We show that the peak of SED rapidly shifts between UV and infrared…
HYPERION is a new three-dimensional dust continuum Monte-Carlo radiative transfer code that is designed to be as generic as possible, allowing radiative transfer to be computed through a variety of three-dimensional grids. The main part of the code is problem-independent, and only requires an arbitrary three-dimensional density structure, dust properties, the position and properties of the illuminating sources, and parameters controlling the running and output of the code. HYPERION is parallelized, and is shown to scale well to thousands of processes. Two common benchmark models for protoplane…
Thermal dust emission carries information on physical conditions and dust properties in many astronomical sources. Because observations represent a sum of emission along the line of sight, their interpretation often requires radiative transfer modelling. We describe a new radiative transfer program SOC for computations of dust emission and examine its performance in simulations of interstellar clouds with external and internal heating. SOC implements the Monte Carlo radiative transfer method as a parallel program for shared memory computers. It can be used to study dust extinction, scattering,…
We investigate the efficiency of interstellar polarization $p_λ/A_λ$ where $p_λ$ is the fractional linear polarization and $A_λ$ is extinction, in 16 lines of sight as a function of wavelength $λ$. We have used the data obtained with the low-dispersion spectropolarimeter HBS as well as those in literature. It is found that the polarization efficiency $p_λ/A_λ$ is proportional to $\exp(-β/λ)$ in wavelength $λ\approx 0.4-0.8 \micron$, where $β$ is a parameter which varies from 0.5 to 1.2 $\micron$. We find that $β$ is negatively correlated with the dust temperature deduced from infrared data by …
Sub-millimetre dust emission is often used to derive the column density N of dense interstellar clouds. The observations consist of data at several wavelengths but of variable resolution. We examine two procedures that been proposed for the estimation of high resolution N maps. Method A uses a low-resolution temperature map combined with higher resolution intensity data while Method B combines N estimates from different wavelength ranges. Our aim is to determine the accuracy of the methods relative to the true column densities and the estimates obtainable with radiative transfer modelling. We …

Aims. The interaction of two isotropic stellar winds is studied in order to calculate the free-free emission from the wind collision region. The effects of the binary separation and the wind momentum ratio on the emission from the wind-wind interaction region are investigated. Methods. We developed a semi-analytical model for calculating the thermal emission from colliding stellar winds. Assuming radiative shocks for the compressed layer, which are expected in close binaries, we obtained the emission measure of the thin shell. Then, we computed the total optical depth along each line of sight …
Cm-wavelength radio continuum emission in excess of free-free, synchrotron and Rayleigh-Jeans dust emission (excess microwave emission, EME), and often called `anomalous microwave emission', is bright in molecular cloud regions exposed to UV radiation, i.e. in photo-dissociation regions (PDRs). The EME correlates with IR dust emission on degree angular scales. Resolved observations of well-studied PDRs are needed to compare the spectral variations of the cm-continuum with tracers of physical conditions and of the dust grain population. The EME is particularly bright in the regions of the rho O…
Aims: We present POLARIS (POLArized RadIation Simulator), a newly developed three-dimensional Monte-Carlo radiative transfer code. POLARIS was designed to calculate dust temperature, polarization maps, and spectral energy distributions. It is optimized to handle data that results from sophisticated magneto-hydrodynamic simulations. The main purpose of the code is to prepare and analyze multi-wavelength continuum polarization measurements in the context of magnetic field studies in the interstellar medium. An exemplary application is the investigation of the role of magnetic fields in star form…
Disk reverberation mapping of a handful of nearby AGN suggest accretion disk sizes which are a factor few too large for their luminosities, apparently at odds with the standard model. Here, we investigate the likely contribution to the measured delay signature of diffuse continuum emission arising from broad line region gas. We start by constructing spherically symmetric pressure-law BLR models (i.e., $P(r)\propto r^{-s}$) that approximately reproduce the observed emission line fluxes of the strong UV--optical emission-lines in the best-studied source, NGC~5548. We then determine the contribut…
We present high sensitivity H91$α$ and 3.5 cm radio continuum observations toward the planetary nebula NGC 3242. The electron temperature determined assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium is consistent within $\sim$10% with that derived from optical lines and the Balmer discontinuity. The line emission and the continuum emission have very similar spatial distribution, suggesting that at this wavelength there is no other continuum process present in a significant manner. In particular, we conclude that emission from spinning dust is not important at this wavelength. In this radio recombinatio…
We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) 1.3 mm continuum observations of the SR 24S transition disk with an angular resolution $\lesssim0.18"$ (12 au radius). We perform a multi-wavelength investigation by combining new data with previous ALMA data at 0.45 mm. The visibilities and images of the continuum emission at the two wavelengths are well characterized by a ring-like emission. Visibility modeling finds that the ring-like emission is narrower at longer wavelengths, in good agreement with models of dust trapping in pressure bumps, although there are complex resi…
Using the three-component spectral model describing the FIRAS average continuum spectra, the analytical expressions for the temperature dependence of the thermodynamic and radiative functions of the galactic far-infrared radiation are obtained. The COBE FIRAS instrument data in the 0.15 - 2.88 THz frequency interval at the mean temperatures T = 17.72 K, T = 14 K, and T =6.73 K are used for calculating the radiative and thermodynamic functions, such as the total radiation power per unit area, total energy density, total emissivity, number density of photons, Helmholtz free energy density, entro…
The densest infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) may represent the earliest observable stage of high-mass star formation. These clouds are very cold, hence they emit mainly at far-infrared and sub-mm wavelengths. For the first time, Herschel has provided multi-wavelength, spatially resolved observations of cores within IRDCs, which, when combined with radiative transfer modelling, can constrain their properties, such as mass, density profile and dust temperature. We use a 3D, multi-wavelength Monte Carlo radiative transfer code to model in detail the emission from six cores in three typical IRDCs seen…
We study the detectability of the emission associated with the AGN dusty structure at sub-mm wavelengths using ALMA, in a theoretical and observational way. Theoretically, we use the Clumpy models from Nenkova et al. together with the mid-infrared to X-ray and the radio fundamental plane scaling relations. We find that it is more likely to detect bigger and denser dusty tori at the highest ALMA frequency (666 GHz/450 micron). We also find that with 1h at 353 GHz/850 micron and 10h at 666 GHz/450 micron we can detect, with a high detection limit, a 1 mJy torus (characteristic of bright AGN). Th…
During the 2014 HST/Swift and ground-based multi-wavelength monitoring campaign of NGC 5548 (AGN STORM), the UV-optical broad emission lines exhibited anomalous, decorrelated behaviour relative to the far-UV continuum flux variability. Here, we use key diagnostic emission lines (Ly-alpha and He II) for this campaign to infer a proxy for the all important, variable driving EUV continuum incident upon BLR clouds. The inferred driving continuum provides a crucial step towards the recovery of the broad emission line response functions in this AGN. In particular, the ionising continuum seen by the …
Recent observations have successfully detected UV-bright and infrared-bright galaxies in the epoch of reionization. However, the origin of their radiative properties has not been understood yet. Combining cosmological hydrodynamic simulations and radiative transfer calculations, we present predictions of multi-wavelength radiative properties of the first galaxies at $z\sim 6-15$. Using zoom-in initial conditions, we investigate three massive galaxies and their satellites in different environment and halo masses: $M_{\rm h} = 2.4\times 10^{10}{\rm M_{\odot}}$ (Halo-10), $1.6\times 10^{11}{\rm M…
As some of the only Lyman continuum (LyC) emitters at z~0, Green Pea (GP) galaxies are possible analogs of the sources that reionized the universe. We present HST COS spectra of 13 of the most highly ionized GPs, with [O III]/[O II]=6-35, and investigate correlations between Ly-alpha, galaxy properties, and low-ionization UV lines. Galaxies with high [O III]/[O II] have higher H-alpha equivalent widths (EWs), and high intrinsic Ly-alpha production may explain the prevalence of high Ly-alpha EWs among GPs. While Ly-alpha escape fraction is closely linked to low gas covering fractions, implying …
We study the moderate-to-high radiative luminosity active galactic nuclei (HLAGN) within the VLA-COSMOS 3 GHz Large Project. The survey covers 2.6 square degrees centered on the COSMOS field with a 1$σ$ sensitivity of 2.3 $\mathrm{μJy}$/beam across the field. This provides the simultaneously largest and deepest radio continuum survey available to date with exquisite multi-wavelength coverage. The survey yields 10,830 radio sources with signal-to-noise ratios $\geq$5. A subsample of 1,604 HLAGN is analyzed here. These were selected via a combination of X-ray luminosity and mid-infrared colors. …
A one-dimensional method for reconstructing the structure of prestellar and protostellar clouds is presented. The method is based on radiative transfer computations and a comparison of theoretical and observed intensity distributions at both millimeter and infrared wavelengths. The radiative transfer of dust emission is modeled for specified parameters of the density distribution, central star, and external background, and the theoretical distribution of the dust temperature inside the cloud is determined. The intensity distributions at millimeter and IR wavelengths are computed and quantitati…
Thanks to ground-based infrared and sub-mm observations the study of the dusty torus of nearby AGN has greatly advanced in the last years. With the aim of further investigating the nuclear mid-infrared emission of the archetypal Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC1068, here we present a fitting to the N- and Q-band Michelle/Gemini spectra. We initially test several available SED libraries, including a smooth, clumpy and two phase torus models, and a clumpy disk plus wind model. Although, the smooth torus model describe the spectra of NGC1068 if we allow to vary some model parameters among the two spectral ba…
With the advent of high-cadence and multi-band photometric monitoring facilities, continuum reverberation mapping is becoming of increasing importance to measure the physical size of quasar accretion disks. The method is based on the measurement of the time it takes for a signal to propagate from the center to the outer parts of the central engine, assuming the continuum light curve at a given wavelength has a time shift of the order of a few days with respect to light curves obtained at shorter wavelengths. We show that with high-quality light curves, this assumption is not valid anymore and …
We present the results of a multi-wavelength study of a sample of high-redshift Radio Loud (RL) Broad Absorption Line (BAL) quasars. This way we extend to higher redshift previous studies on the radio properties, and broadband optical colors of these objects. We have se- lected a sample of 22 RL BAL quasars with 3.6 z 4.8 cross-correlating the FIRST radio survey with the SDSS. Flux densities between 1.25 and 9.5 GHz have been collected with the JVLA and Effelsberg-100m telescopes for 15 BAL and 14 non-BAL quasars used as compar- ison sample. We determine the synchrotron peak frequency, constra…
We present a revised analysis of the photometric reverberation mapping campaign of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS 0558-504 carried out with the Swift Observatory during 2008--2010. Previously, Gliozzi et al.\ found using the Discrete Correlation Function (DCF) method that the short-wavelength continuum variations lagged behind variations at longer wavelengths, the opposite of the trend expected for thermal reprocessing of X-rays by the accretion disc, and they interpreted their results as evidence against the reprocessing model. We carried out new DCF measurements that demonstrate that t…
We present observational data for two main components (S255IR and S255N) of the S255 high mass star forming region in continuum and molecular lines obtained at 1.3 mm and 1.1 mm with the SMA, at 1.3 cm with the VLA and at 23 and 50 cm with the GMRT. The angular resolution was from ~ 2" to ~ 5" for all instruments. With the SMA we detected a total of about 50 spectral lines of 20 different molecules (including isotopologues). About half of the lines and half of the species (in particular N2H+, SiO, C34S, DCN, DNC, DCO+, HC3N, H2CO, H2CS, SO2) have not been previously reported in S255IR and part…
We investigate the origin of the FIR continuum of SDSS J1148+5251, using it as a prototype for the more general class of high-luminosity high-redshift QSOs. We run the radiative transfer code TRADING to follow the transfer of radiation from the central source and from stellar sources through the dusty environment of the host galaxy. The model is based on the output of the semi-analytical merger tree code, GAMETE/QSOdust, which enables to predict the evolution of the host galaxy and of its nuclear black hole, following the star formation history and chemical evolution -- including dust -- in al…
An object called G2 was recently discovered moving towards the supermassive black hole in the Galactic Center. G2 emits infrared (IR) lines and continuum, which allows constraining its properties. The question is still unresolved whether G2 has a central windy star or it is a coreless cloud. Assuming the object is a cloud originating near the apocenter I perform line/continuum IR diagnostics, revisit estimates of non-thermal emission from pericenter passage, and speculate about future observational prospects. This work is partially reported in arXiv:1309.2282 and partially consists of new idea…
We investigate the effect of line of sight temperature variations and noise on two commonly used methods to determine dust properties from dust continuum observations of dense cores. One method employs a direct fit to a modified blackbody SED; the other involves a comparison of flux ratios to an analytical prediction. Fitting fluxes near the SED peak produces inaccurate temperature and dust spectral index estimates due to the line of sight temperature (and density) variations. Longer wavelength fluxes in the Rayleigh-Jeans part of the spectrum (>~ 600 micron for typical cores) may more accurat…
