We analyze a random lozenge tiling model of a large regular hexagon, whose underlying weight structure is periodic of period $2$ in both the horizontal and vertical directions. This is a determinantal point process whose correlation kernel is expressed in terms of non-Hermitian matrix valued orthogonal polynomials. This model belongs to a class of models for which the existing techniques for studying asymptotics cannot be applied. The novel part of our method consists of establishing a connection between matrix valued and scalar valued orthogonal polynomials. This allows to simplify the double contour formula for the kernel obtained by Duits and Kuijlaars by reducing the size of a Riemann-Hilbert problem. The proof relies on the fact that the matrix valued weight possesses eigenvalues that live on an underlying Riemann surface $\mathcal{M}$ of genus $0$. We consider this connection of independent interest; it is natural to expect that similar ideas can be used for other matrix valued orthogonal polynomials, as long as the corresponding Riemann surface $\mathcal{M}$ is of genus $0$.
The rest of the method consists of two parts, and mainly follows the lines of a previous work of Charlier, Duits, Kuijlaars and Lenells. First, we perform a Deift-Zhou steepest descent analysis to obtain asymptotics for the scalar valued orthogonal polynomials. The main difficulty is the study of an equilibrium problem in the complex plane. Second, the asymptotics for the orthogonal polynomials are substituted in the double contour integral and the latter is analyzed using the saddle point method.
Our main results are the limiting densities of the lozenges in the disordered flower-shaped region. However, we stress that the method allows in principle to rigorously compute other meaningful probabilistic quantities in the model.
We prove that the asymptotic of the bulk local statistics in models of random lozenge tilings is universal in the vicinity of straight boundaries of the tiled domains. The result applies to uniformly random lozenge tilings of large polygonal domains on triangular lattice and to the probability measures describing the decomposition in Gelfand-Tsetlin bases of tensor products of representations of unitary groups. In a weaker form our theorem also applies to random domino tilings.
This paper establishes a universality result for scaling limits of uniformly random lozenge tilings of large domains. We prove that whenever a boundary of the domain has three adjacent straight segments inclined under 120 degrees to each other, the asymptotics of tilings near the middle segment is described by the GUE--corners process of random matrix theory. An important step in our argument is to show that fluctuations of the height function of random tilings on essentially arbitrary simply-connected domains of diameter $N$ have smaller magnitude than $N^{1/2}$.
It has been well known for a long time that the height function of random lozenge tilings of large domains follow a law of large number and possible limits called dimer limit shapes are well understood. For the next order, it is expected that fluctuations behave like version of a Gaussian Free field, at least away from some special "frozen" regions. However despite being one of the main questions in the domain for 20 years, only special cases have been obtained. In this paper we show that for any specified limit shape with no frozen region, one can construct a sequence of domains whose height …
This paper investigates lozenge tilings of non-convex hexagonal regions and more specifically the asymptotic fluctuations of the tilings within and near the strip formed by opposite cuts in the regions, when the size of the regions tend to infinity, together with the cuts. It leads to a new kernel, which is expected to have universality properties.
We give a new proof of the fact that, near a turning point of the frozen boundary, the vertical tiles in a uniformly random lozenge tiling of a large sawtooth domain are distributed like the eigenvalues of a GUE random matrix. Our argument uses none of the standard tools of integrable probability. In their place, it uses a combinatorial interpretation of the Harish-Chandra/Itzykson-Zuber integral as a generating function for desymmetrized Hurwitz numbers.
We study large-scale height fluctuations of random stepped surfaces corresponding to uniformly random lozenge tilings of polygons on the triangular lattice. For a class of polygons (which allows arbitrarily large number of sides), we show that these fluctuations are asymptotically governed by a Gaussian free (massless) field. This complements the similar result obtained in Kenyon [Comm. Math. Phys. 281 (2008) 675-709] about tilings of regions without frozen facets of the limit shape. In our asymptotic analysis we use the explicit double contour integral formula for the determinantal correlatio…
We study asymptotics of $q$-distributed random lozenge tilings of sawtooth domains (equivalently, of random interlacing integer arrays with fixed top row). Under the distribution we consider each tiling is weighted proportionally to $q^{\mathsf{vol}}$, where $\mathsf{vol}$ is the volume under the corresponding 3D stepped surface. We prove the following Interlacing Central Limit Theorem: as $q\rightarrow1$, the domain gets large, and the fixed top row approximates a given nonrandom profile, the vertical lozenges are distributed as the eigenvalues of a GUE random matrix and of its successive pri…
We use the periodic Schur process, introduced in arXiv:math/0601019v1, to study the random height function of lozenge tilings (equivalently, dimers) on an infinite cylinder distributed under two variants of the $q^{\operatorname{vol}}$ measure. Under the first variant, corresponding to random cylindric partitions, the height function converges to a deterministic limit shape and fluctuations around it are given by the Gaussian free field in the conformal structure predicted by the Kenyon-Okounkov conjecture. Under the second variant, corresponding to an unrestricted dimer model on the cylinder,…
We study a reversible continuous-time Markov dynamics on lozenge tilings of the plane, introduced by Luby et al. Single updates consist in concatenations of $n$ elementary lozenge rotations at adjacent vertices. The dynamics can also be seen as a reversible stochastic interface evolution. When the update rate is chosen proportional to $1/n$, the dynamics is known to enjoy especially nice features: a certain Hamming distance between configurations contracts with time on average and the relaxation time of the Markov chain is diffusive, growing like the square of the diameter of the system. Here,…
A Gelfand-Tsetlin scheme of depth N is a triangular array with m integers at level m, m=1,...,N, subject to certain interlacing constraints. We study the ensemble of uniformly random Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes with arbitrary fixed N-th row. We obtain an explicit double contour integral expression for the determinantal correlation kernel of this ensemble (and also of its q-deformation). This provides new tools for asymptotic analysis of uniformly random lozenge tilings of polygons on the triangular lattice; or, equivalently, of random stepped surfaces. We work with a class of polygons which allows…
We present a detailed study of a four parameter family of elliptic weights on tilings of a hexagon introduced by Borodin, Gorin and Rains, generalizing some of their results. In the process, we connect the combinatorics of the model with the theory of elliptic special functions. Using canonical coordinates for the hexagon we show how the $n$-point distribution function and transitional probabilities connect to the theory of $BC_n$-symmetric multivariate elliptic special functions and of elliptic difference operators introduced by Rains. In particular, the difference operators intrinsically cap…
In this paper we present a combinatorial generalization of the fact that the number of plane partitions that fit in a $2a\times b\times b$ box is equal to the number of such plane partitions that are symmetric, times the number of such plane partitions for which the transpose is the same as the complement. We use the equivalent phrasing of this identity in terms of symmetry classes of lozenge tilings of a hexagon on the triangular lattice. Our generalization consists of allowing the hexagon have certain symmetrically placed holes along its horizontal symmetry axis. The special case when there …
We consider regions obtained from 120 degree rotationally invariant hexagons by removing a core and three equal satellites (all equilateral triangles) so that the resulting region is both vertically symmetric and 120 degree rotationally invariant, and give simple product formulas for the number of their lozenge tilings. We describe a new method of approach for proving these formulas, and give the full details for an illustrative special case. As a byproduct, we are also able to generalize this special case in a different direction, by finding a natural counterpart of a twenty year old formula …
We consider random lozenge tilings on the triangular lattice with holes $Q_1,...,Q_n$ in some fixed position. For each unit triangle not in a hole, consider the average orientation of the lozenge covering it. We show that the scaling limit of this discrete field is the electrostatic field obtained when regarding each hole $Q_i$ as an electrical charge of magnitude equal to the difference between the number of unit triangles of the two different orientations inside $Q_i$. This is then restated in terms of random surfaces, yielding the result that the average over surfaces with prescribed height…
This paper is based on the study of random lozenge tilings of non-convex polygonal regions with interacting non-convexities (cuts) and the corresponding asymptotic kernel as in [3] and [4] (discrete tacnode kernel). Here this kernel is used to find the probability distributions and joint probability distributions for the fluctuation of tiles along lines in between the cuts. These distributions are new.
This paper studies random lozenge tilings of general non-convex polygonal regions. We show that the pairwise interaction of the non-convexities leads asymptotically to new kernels and thus to new statistics for the tiling fluctuations. The precise geometrical figure here consists of a hexagon with cuts along opposite edges. For this model we take limits when the size of the hexagon and the cuts tend to infinity, while keeping certain geometric data fixed in order to guarantee interaction beyond the limit. We show in this paper that the kernel for the finite tiling model can be expressed as a m…
We study a one-parameter family of probability measures on lozenge tilings of large regular hexagons that interpolates between the uniform measure on all possible tilings and a particular fully frozen tiling. The description of the asymptotic behavior can be separated into two regimes: the low and the high temperature regime. Our main results are the computations of the disordered regions in both regimes and the limiting densities of the different lozenges there. For low temperatures, the disorded region consists of two disjoint ellipses. In the high temperature regime the two ellipses merge i…
In this paper we enumerate the centrally symmetric lozenge tilings of a hexagon with a fern removed from its center. The proof is based on a variant of Kuo's graphical condensation method. An unexpected connection with the total number of tilings is established~---~when suitably normalized, the number of centrally symmetric tilings is equal to the square root of the total number of tilings. The results we present can be regarded as a new extension of the enumeration of self-complementary plane partitions that fit in a box.
We compute the bulk limit of the correlation functions for the uniform measure on lozenge tilings of a hexagon. The limiting determinantal process is a translation invariant extension of the discrete sine process, which also describes the ergodic Gibbs measure of an appropriate slope.
A combination of direct and inverse Fourier transforms on the unitary group $U(N)$ identifies normalized characters with probability measures on $N$-tuples of integers. We develop the $N\to\infty$ version of this correspondence by matching the asymptotics of partial derivatives at the identity of logarithm of characters with Law of Large Numbers and Central Limit Theorem for global behavior of corresponding random $N$-tuples. As one application we study fluctuations of the height function of random domino and lozenge tilings of a rich class of domains. In this direction we prove the Kenyon-Oko…
Consider a semi-regular hexagon on the triangular lattice (that is, the lattice consisting of unit equilateral triangles, drawn so that one family of lines is vertical). Rhombus (or lozenge) tilings of this region may be represented in at least two very different ways: as families of non-intersecting lattice paths; or alternatively as perfect matchings of a certain sub-graph of the hexagonal lattice. In this article we show how the lattice path representation of tilings may be utilised in order to calculate the entries of the inverse Kasteleyn matrix that arises from interpreting tilings as pe…
In this paper we enumerate the centrally symmetric lozenge tilings of a hexagon with a shamrock removed from its center. Our proof is based on a variant of Kuo's graphical condensation method in which only three of the four involved vertices are on the same face. As a special case, we obtain a new proof of the enumeration of the self-complementary plane partitions.
