Traditionally, text generation models take in a sequence of text as input, and iteratively generate the next most probable word using pre-trained parameters. In this work, we propose the architecture to use images instead of text as the input of the text generation model, called StoryGen. In the architecture, we design a Relational Text Data Generator algorithm that relates different features from multiple images. The output samples from the model demonstrate the ability to generate meaningful paragraphs of text containing the extracted features from the input images. This is an undergraduate project report. Completed Dec. 2019 at the Cooper Union.

Storytelling is an open-ended task that entails creative thinking and requires a constant flow of ideas. Natural language generation (NLG) for storytelling is especially challenging because it requires the generated text to follow an overall theme while remaining creative and diverse to engage the reader. In this work, we introduce a system and a web-based demo, FairyTailor, for human-in-the-loop visual story co-creation. Users can create a cohesive children's fairytale by weaving generated texts and retrieved images with their input. FairyTailor adds another modality and modifies the text gen…

Image-guided story ending generation (IgSEG) is to generate a story ending based on given story plots and ending image. Existing methods focus on cross-modal feature fusion but overlook reasoning and mining implicit information from story plots and ending image. To tackle this drawback, we propose a multimodal event transformer, an event-based reasoning framework for IgSEG. Specifically, we construct visual and semantic event graphs from story plots and ending image, and leverage event-based reasoning to reason and mine implicit information in a single modality. Next, we connect visual and sem…
Story visualization aims to generate a sequence of images to narrate each sentence in a multi-sentence story, where the images should be realistic and keep global consistency across dynamic scenes and characters. Current works face the problem of semantic misalignment because of their fixed architecture and diversity of input modalities. To address this problem, we explore the semantic alignment between text and image representations by learning to match their semantic levels in the GAN-based generative model. More specifically, we introduce dynamic interactions according to learning to dynami…

Multimodal contents have become commonplace on the Internet today, manifested as news articles, social media posts, and personal or business blog posts. Among the various kinds of media (images, videos, graphics, icons, audio) used in such multimodal stories, images are the most popular. The selection of images from a collection - either author's personal photo album, or web repositories - and their meticulous placement within a text, builds a succinct multimodal commentary for digital consumption. In this paper we present a system that automates the process of selecting relevant images for a …

We propose a video story question-answering (QA) architecture, Multimodal Dual Attention Memory (MDAM). The key idea is to use a dual attention mechanism with late fusion. MDAM uses self-attention to learn the latent concepts in scene frames and captions. Given a question, MDAM uses the second attention over these latent concepts. Multimodal fusion is performed after the dual attention processes (late fusion). Using this processing pipeline, MDAM learns to infer a high-level vision-language joint representation from an abstraction of the full video content. We evaluate MDAM on PororoQA and Mov…

Research on text generation from multimodal inputs has largely focused on static images, and less on video data. In this paper, we propose a new task, narration generation, that is complementing videos with narration texts that are to be interjected in several places. The narrations are part of the video and contribute to the storyline unfolding in it. Moreover, they are context-informed, since they include information appropriate for the timeframe of video they cover, and also, do not need to include every detail shown in input scenes, as a caption would. We collect a new dataset from the ani…

Generative language models (LMs) such as GPT-2/3 can be prompted to generate text with remarkable quality. While they are designed for text-prompted generation, it remains an open question how the generation process could be guided by modalities beyond text such as images. In this work, we propose a training-free framework, called MAGIC (iMAge-Guided text generatIon with CLIP), for plugging in visual controls in the generation process and enabling LMs to perform multimodal tasks (e.g., image captioning) in a zero-shot manner. MAGIC is a simple yet efficient plug-and-play framework, which direc…

People naturally understand the emotions of-and often also empathize with-those around them. In this paper, we predict the emotional valence of an empathic listener over time as they listen to a speaker narrating a life story. We use the dataset provided by the OMG-Empathy Prediction Challenge, a workshop held in conjunction with IEEE FG 2019. We present a multimodal LSTM model with feature-level fusion and local attention that predicts empathic responses from audio, text, and visual features. Our best-performing model, which used only the audio and text features, achieved a concordance correl…

Automatic speech-based affect recognition of individuals in dyadic conversation is a challenging task, in part because of its heavy reliance on manual pre-processing. Traditional approaches frequently require hand-crafted speech features and segmentation of speaker turns. In this work, we design end-to-end deep learning methods to recognize each person's affective expression in an audio stream with two speakers, automatically discovering features and time regions relevant to the target speaker's affect. We integrate a local attention mechanism into the end-to-end architecture and compare the p…
