In this work, we study the entanglement and topological properties of an extended flat-band Creutz ladder by considering a compacted localized state (CLS). Based on the CLS picture, we find a multiple flat-band extension from the conventional two flat-band Creutz ladder. A simple vertical inter-chain coupling leads to a four complete flat-band system and creates an additive $π$-flux pattern on the Creutz ladder. Interestingly, the strong coupling induces a topological phase transition where the distribution of CLSs is modified: upper and lower flat-band CLSs are paired up. This pairing leads to the destruction of the CLS' entanglement and, hence, to a vanishing edge mode (i.e., the breakdown of non-trivial topological phase). Finally, we study the localization dynamics induced by the presence of complete flat bands in this extended flat-band system.
We report the experimental realization of a topological Creutz ladder for ultracold fermionic atoms in a resonantly driven 1D optical lattice. The two-leg ladder consists of the two lowest orbital states of the optical lattice and the cross inter-leg links are generated via two-photon resonant coupling between the orbitals by periodic lattice shaking. The characteristic pseudo-spin winding in the topologically non-trivial bands of the ladder system is demonstrated using momentum-resolved Ramsey-type interferometric measurements. We discuss a two-tone driving method to extend the inter-leg link…
We study disorder-free many-body localization in the flat-band Creutz ladder, which was recently realized in cold-atoms in an optical lattice. In a non-interacting case, the flat-band structure of the system leads to a Wannier wavefunction localized on four adjacent lattice sites. In the flat-band regime both with and without interactions, the level spacing analysis exhibits Poisson-like distribution indicating the existence of disorder-free localization. Calculations of the inverse participation ratio support this observation. Interestingly, this type of localization is robust to weak disorde…
We clarify the interplay and competition between disorder and flat band in the Creutz ladder with inter-particle interactions focusing on the system's dynamics. Without disorder, the Creutz ladder exhibits flat-band many-body localization (FMBL). In this work, we find that disorder generates drastic effects on the system, i.e., addition of it induces a thermal phase first and further increase of it leads the system to the conventional many-body-localized (MBL) phase. The competition gives novel localization properties and unconventional quench dynamics to the system. We first draw the global s…
Quantum charge pumping phenomenon connects band topology through the dynamics of a one-dimensional quantum system. In terms of a microscopic model, the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger/Rice-Mele quantum pump continues to serve as a fruitful starting point for many considerations of topological physics. Here we present a generalized Creutz scheme as a distinct two-band quantum pump model. By noting that it undergoes two kinds of topological band transitions accompanying with a Zak-phase-difference of $π$ and $2π$, respectively, various charge pumping schemes are studied by applying an elaborate Peierl's ph…
Understanding the robustness of topological phases of matter in the presence of strong interactions, and synthesising novel strongly-correlated topological materials, lie among the most important and difficult challenges of modern theoretical and experimental physics. In this work, we present a complete theoretical analysis of the synthetic Creutz-Hubbard ladder, which is a paradigmatic model that provides a neat playground to address these challenges. We put special attention to the competition of correlated topological phases and orbital quantum magnetism in the regime of strong interactions…
We prove that, a suitable correlation between the system parameters can trigger topological phase transition and flat bands in a multi strand Creutz ladder network, when a staggered second neighbor interaction is included along the x axis. An appropriate change of basis maps such a finite N strand mesh into N or N 1 decoupled Su Schrieffer Heeger chains, depending onNeven or odd. A simple intuitive method, using a real space decimation scheme turns out to be very powerful in analytically extracting the flat bands, explaining their degeneracy or a lifting of the same. Our results are analytical…
Fermion systems with flat bands can boost superconductivity by enhancing the density of states at the Fermi level. We use quasiexact numerical methods to show that repulsive interactions between spinless fermions in a one-dimensional (1D) flat-band system, the Creutz ladder, give a finite pairing energy that increases with repulsion, though charge quasi-order (QO) remains dominant. Adding an attractive component shifts the balance in favor of superconductivity and the interplay of two flat bands further yields a remarkable enhancement of superconductivity, well outside of known paradigms for 1…
We find that the topological phase transition in a chiral ladder is characterized by dramatic signatures in many body entanglement entropy between the legs, close to half-filling. The value of entanglement entropy for various fillings close to half-filling is identical, at the critical point, but splays out on either side, thus showing a sharp signature at the transition point. A second signature is provided by the change in entanglement entropy when a particle is added (or subtracted) from half-filling which turns out to be exactly $-\log{2}$ in the trivial phase, but zero in the topological …
The realization of the Hofstadter model in a strongly anisotropic ladder geometry has now become possible in one-dimensional optical lattices with a synthetic dimension. In this work, we show how the Hofstadter Hamiltonian in such ladder configurations hosts a topological phase of matter which is radically different from its two-dimensional counterpart. This topological phase stems directly from the hybrid nature of the ladder geometry, and is protected by a properly defined inversion symmetry. We start our analysis considering the paradigmatic case of a three-leg ladder which supports a topol…
We find that a flat-band fermion system with interactions and without disorders exhibits non-thermalized ergodicity-breaking dynamics, an analog of many-body localization (MBL). In the previous works, we observed flat-band many-body localization (FMBL) in the Creutz ladder model. The origin of FMBL is a compact localized state governed by local integrals of motion (LIOMs), which are to be obtained explicitly. In this work, we clarify the dynamical aspects of FMBL. We first study dynamics of two-particles, and find that the states are not substantially modified by weak interactions, but the per…
In this work, we present bilayer flat-band Hamiltonians, in which all bulk states are localized and specified by extensive local integrals of motion (LIOMs). The present systems are bilayer extension of Creutz ladder, which is studied previously. In order to construct models, we employ building blocks, cube operators, which are linear combinations of fermions defined in each cube of the bilayer lattice. There are eight cubic operators, and the Hamiltonians are composed of the number operators of them, the LIOMs. A suitable arrangement of locations of the cube operators is needed to have exact …
We use an entanglement measure that respects the superselection of particle number to study the non-local properties of symmetry-protected topological edge states. Considering half-filled M-leg Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) ladders as an example, we show that the topological properties and the operational entanglement extractable from the boundaries are intimately connected. Topological phases with at least two filled edge states have the potential to realize genuine, non-bipartite, many-body entanglement which can be transferred to a quantum register. The entanglement is extractable when the fil…
We show that a hierarchy of topological phases in one dimension -- a topological Devil's staircase -- can emerge at fractional filling fractions in interacting systems, whose single-particle band structure describes a topological or a crystalline topological insulator. Focusing on a specific example in the BDI class, we present a field-theoretical argument based on bosonization that indicates how the system, as a function of the filling fraction, hosts a series of density waves. Subsequently, based on a numerical investigation of the low-lying energy spectrum, Wilczek-Zee phases, and entanglem…
