The evolution of software defined networking (SDN) has played a significant role in the development of next-generation networks (NGN). SDN as a programmable network having service provisioning on the fly has induced a keen interest both in academic world and industry. In this article, a comprehensive survey is presented on SDN advancement over conventional network. The paper covers historical evolution in relation to SDN, functional architecture of the SDN and its related technologies, and OpenFlow standards/protocols, including the basic concept of interfacing of OpenFlow with network elements (NEs) such as optical switches. In addition a selective architecture survey has been conducted. Our proposed architecture on software defined heterogeneous network, points towards new technology enabling the opening of new vistas in the domain of network technology, which will facilitate in handling of huge internet traffic and helps infrastructure and service providers to customize their resources dynamically. Besides, current research projects and various activities as being carried out to standardize SDN as NGN by different standard development organizations (SODs) have been duly elaborated to judge how this technology moves towards standardization.
Data centres are growing in numbers and size, and their networks expanding to carry larger amounts of traffic. The traffic profile is constantly varying, particularly in cloud data centres where tenants arrive, leave, and may change their resource requirements in between, and so the network configuration must change at a commensurate rate. Software-Defined Networking - programmatic control of network configuration - has been critical to meeting the demands of modern data centre network management, and has been the subject of intense focus by the research community, working in conjunction with …
Many communities have researched the application of novel network architectures such as Content-Centric Networking (CCN) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) to build the future Internet. Another emerging technology which is big data analysis has also won lots of attentions from academia to industry. Many splendid researches have been done on CCN, SDN, and big data, which all have addressed separately in the traditional literature. In this paper, we propose a novel network paradigm to jointly consider CCN, SDN, and big data, and provide the architecture internal data flow, big data processing…
This paper gives an overview on how Software Defined Networking (SDN) principles can be applied to existing Ethernet merchant silicon considering the requirements modern networks face. We show that existing Layer 2 features specified by IEEE 802.1Q support SDN. The bridge architecture supports control plane/data plane split by design and also allows for external control e.g. by an SDN Controller. The data plane provided by existing chips is feature rich for network virtualization and supports even more features like OAM. We outline the principles of SDN over bridges and show a number of possib…
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) allows to control the available network resources by an intelligent and centralized authority in order to optimize traffic flows in a flexible manner. However, centralized control may face scalability issues when the network size or the number of traffic flows increases. Also, a centralized controller may form a single point of failure, thereby affecting the network resilience. This article provides an overview of SDN that focuses on (1) scalability concerning the increased control overhead faced by a central controller, and (2) resiliency in terms of protecti…
The short-term adoption of opportunistic networks (OppNet) depends on improving the current performance of this type of network. Software-Defined Networks (SDN) architecture is used by Internet applications with high resource demand. SDN technology improves network performance by programmatically managing the network configuration by using a control layer. In this paper, we propose that OppNet nodes use a control layer to get an overview of the whole network and use this knowledge to apply policies to get a better performance of the network. As a use case for our experimentation, we have focus…
Smart environment requires uninterrupted connection when moving from one network to another. This is best accomplished at the network level (L3). Full interoperability and integration of heterogeneous networks is necessary for communication session continuity. Software Defined Networking (SDN) with virtual IP addresses solves the problem. Implementing a homogeneous SDN is expensive, given the enormous investments in existing networks. To solve this second problem, we deploy the least set of SDN features to provide full L3 mobility. We use a common controller to manage the IP address translatio…
In the last few years, the emerging network architecture paradigm of Software-Defined Networking (SDN), has become one of the most important technology to manage large scale networks such as Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs). Recently, several works have shown interest in the use of SDN paradigm in VANETs. SDN brings flexibility, scalability and management facility to current VANETs. However, almost all of proposed Software-Defined VANET (SDVN) architectures are infrastructure-based. This paper will focus on how to enable SDN in infrastructure-less vehicular environments. For this aim, we pro…

Current designs of future In-Vehicle Networks (IVN) prepare for switched Ethernet backbones, which can host advanced LAN technologies such as IEEE Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN). In this paper, we present an integrated Time-Sensitive Software-Defined Networking (TSSDN) architecture that simultaneously enables control of synchronous and asynchronous real-time and best-effort communication for all IVN traffic classes. Despite the central SDN controller, we can validate that control can operate without a delay penalty for TSN traffic, provided protocols are …
Ethernet has become the next standard for automotive and industrial automation networks. Standard extensions such as IEEE 802.1Q Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) have been proven to meet the real-time and robustness requirements of these environments. Augmenting the TSN switching by Software-Defined Networking functions promises additional benefits: A programming option for TSN devices can add much value to the resilience, security, and adaptivity of the environment. Network simulation allows to model highly complex networks before assembly and is an essential process for the design and validat…
Classical control and management plane for computer networks is addressing individual parameters of protocol layers within an individual wireless network device. We argue that this is not sufficient in phase of increasing deployment of highly re-configurable systems, as well as heterogeneous wireless systems co-existing in the same radio spectrum which demand harmonized, frequently even coordinated adaptation of multiple parameters in different protocol layers (cross-layer) in multiple network devices (cross-node). We propose UniFlex, a framework enabling unified and flexible radio and network…
Current SDN controllers aggregate all control plane subsystems into a monolithic program. A controller that follows the aggregated approach defines its own set of programming interfaces and services, making application development dependent on a particular SDN controller and restricting portability of management applications across controllers. We propose a new architecture that disaggregates controller functionality and externalizes packet processing, a critical first step towards migrating from a centralized, monolithic design to a decentralized microservice control plane architecture in whi…

We propose a deep learning based multi-vector DDoS detection system in a software-defined network (SDN) environment. SDN provides flexibility to program network devices for different objectives and eliminates the need for third-party vendor-specific hardware. We implement our system as a network application on top of an SDN controller. We use deep learning for feature reduction of a large set of features derived from network traffic headers. We evaluate…
Next generation (5G) wireless networks are expected to support the massive data and accommodate a wide range of services/use cases with distinct requirements in a cost-effective, flexible, and agile manner. As a promising solution, wireless network virtualization (WNV), or network slicing, enables multiple virtual networks to share the common infrastructure on demand, and to be customized for different services/use cases. This article focuses on network-wide resource allocation for realizing WNV. Specifically, the motivations, the enabling platforms, and the benefits of WNV, are first reviewed…
The Internet is the driving force of the new digital world, which has created a revolution. With the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT), almost everything is being connected to the internet. However, with the traditional IP network system, it is computationally very complex and costly to manage and configure the network, where the data plane and the control plane are tightly coupled. In order to simplify the network management tasks, software-defined networking (SDN) has been proposed as a promising paradigm shift towards an externalized and logically centralized network control plane. SD…
K-12 engineering outreach has typically focused on elementary electrical and mechanical engineering or robot experiments integrated in science or math classes. In contrast, we propose a novel outreach program focusing on communication network principles that enable the ubiquitous web and smart-phone applications. We design outreach activities that illustrate the communication network principles through activities and team competitions in physical education (PE) as well as story writing and cartooning in English Language Arts (ELA) classes. The PE activities cover the principles of store-and-fo…

However, there still remain challenges in managing cloud architecture, in areas such as cloud security. In this paper, we exploit software-defined networking (SDN) and blockchain technologies to secure cloud management platforms from a networking perspective. We develop a blockchain-powered SDN-enabled networking infrastructure in which the integration between blockchain-based security and autonomy management layer an…
Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a new networking architecture which aims to provide better decoupling between network control (control plane) and data forwarding functionalities (data plane). This separation introduces several benefits, such as a directly programmable and (virtually) centralized network control. However, researchers showed that the required communication channel between the control and data plane of SDN creates a potential bottleneck in the system, introducing new vulnerabilities. Indeed, this behavior could be exploited to mount powerful attacks, such as the control plan…
Ultra-low delay sensitive applications can afford delay only at the level of msec. An example of this application class are the Networked Music Performance (NMP) systems that describe a live music performance by geographically separate musicians over the Internet. The present work proposes a novel architecture for NMP systems, where the key-innovation is the close collaboration between the network and the application. Using SDN principles, the applications are enabled to adapt their internal audio signal processing, in order to cope with network delay increase. Thus, affordable end-to-end dela…
Recently, there are significant advances in the areas of networking, caching and computing. Nevertheless, these three important areas have traditionally been addressed separately in the existing research. In this paper, we present a novel framework that integrates networking, caching and computing in a systematic way and enables dynamic orchestration of these three resources to improve the end-to-end system performance and meet the requirements of different applications. Then, we consider the bandwidth, caching and computing resource allocation issue and formulate it as a joint caching/computi…
Plug-and-play information technology (IT) infrastructure has been expanding very rapidly in recent years. With the advent of cloud computing, many ecosystem and business paradigms are encountering potential changes and may be able to eliminate their IT infrastructure maintenance processes. Real-time performance and high availability requirements have induced telecom networks to adopt the new concepts of the cloud model: software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV). NFV introduces and deploys new network functions in an open and standardized IT environment, while …
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) play a major role in the expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) market as they allow the deployment of low cost and low power networks possibly in large areas. The introduction of the 6LoWPAN standard allowed WSN to move into the IPv6 era, with a seamless integration of sensors into external networks. The recent application of IoT in industrial systems is now introducing new traffic patterns - machine to machine (M2M) above the others - and communication challenges that can modify the classical multipoint-to-point pattern of WSN, having the sink as the root o…
Software defined networking (SDN) has emerged as a promising paradigm for making the control of communication networks flexible. SDN separates the data packet forwarding plane, i.e., the data plane, from the control plane and employs a central controller. Network virtualization allows the flexible sharing of physical networking resources by multiple users (tenants). Each tenant runs its own applications over its virtual network, i.e., its slice of the actual physical network. The virtualization of SDN networks promises to allow networks to leverage the combined benefits of SDN networking and n…
The introduction of SDN in Service Providers' networks like GEANT is a challenging task. Prototypes of new generation services have to exhibit "carrier grade" characteristics, meet the high level expectations and specialized needs of GEANT customers. In this demonstration, we present the SDN based prototype of GEANT Open service, used by GEANT customers and approved commercial partners to interconnect using Layer 2 circuits. Currently, this service is delivered through a set of Open eXchange Points leveraging on legacy solutions. The SDN based prototype has been realized on top of ONOS and lev…
In this paper, we propose an approach that relies on distributed traffic generation and monitoring to identify the operational data-paths in a given Software Defined Networking (SDN) driven data-plane. We show that under certain assumptions, there exist necessary and sufficient conditions for formally guaranteeing that all operational data-paths are discovered using our approach. In order to provide reliable communication within the SDN driven data-planes, assuring that the implemented data-paths are the requested (and expected) ones is necessary. This requires discovering the actual operation…
As the Software Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm gains momentum, every network operator faces the obvious dilemma: when and how to migrate from existing IP routers to SDN compliant equipments. A single step complete overhaul of a fully functional network is impractical, while at the same time, the immediate benefits of SDN are obvious. A viable solution is thus a gradual migration over time, where questions of which routers should migrate first, and whether the order of migration makes a difference, can be analyzed from techno economic and traffic engineering perspective. In this paper, we ad…
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging paradigm that promises to change this state of affairs, by breaking vertical integration, separating the network's control logic from the underlying routers and switches, promoting (logical) centralization of network control, and introducing the ability to program the network. The separation of concerns introduced between the definition of network policies, their implementation in switching hardware, and the forwarding of traffic, is key to the desired flexibility: by breaking the network control problem into tractable pieces, SDN makes it easie…
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) enables flexible network resource allocations for traffic engineering, but at the same time the scalability problem becomes more serious since traffic is more difficult to be aggregated. Those crucial issues in SDN have been studied for unicast but have not been explored for multicast traffic, and addressing those issues for multicast is more challenging since the identities and the number of members in a multicast group can be arbitrary. In this paper, therefore, we propose a new multicast tree for SDN, named Branch-aware Steiner Tree (BST). The BST problem i…
This article investigates the basic design principles for a new Wireless Network Operating System (WNOS), a radically different approach to software-defined networking (SDN) for infrastructure-less wireless networks. Departing from well-understood approaches inspired by OpenFlow, WNOS provides the network designer with an abstraction hiding (i) the lower-level details of the wireless protocol stack and (ii) the distributed nature of the network operations. Based on this abstract representation, the WNOS takes network control programs written on a centralized, high-level view of the network and…

Moreover, this approach provides important operational advantages with respect to traditional optimization algorithms.
Video continues to dominate network traffic, yet operators today have poor visibility into the number, duration, and resolutions of the video streams traversing their domain. Current approaches are inaccurate, expensive, or unscalable, as they rely on statistical sampling, middle-box hardware, or packet inspection software. We present {\em iTelescope}, the first intelligent, inexpensive, and scalable SDN-based solution for identifying and classifying video flows in real-time. Our solution is novel in combining dynamic flow rules with telemetry and machine learning, and is built on commodity Op…
Software defined Networks (SDNs) have drawn much attention both from academia and industry over the last few years. Despite the fact that underlying ideas already exist through areas such as P2P applications and active networks (e.g. virtual topologies and dynamic changes of the network via software), only now has the technology evolved to a point where it is possible to scale the implementations, which justifies the high interest in SDNs nowadays. In this article, the JISA Editors invite five leading scientists from three continents (Raouf Boutaba, David Hutchison, Raj Jain, Ramachandran Ramj…
Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) will allow implementing low-latency services that have been unfeasible so far. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) are working towards the standardization of MEC in 5G networks and the corresponding solutions for routing user traffic to applications in local area networks. Nevertheless, there are neither practical implementations for dynamically relocating applications from the core to a MEC host nor from one MEC host to another ensuring service continuity. In this paper we propose a solu…
OpenFlow is a protocol implementing Software Defined Networking, a new networking paradigm, which segregates packet forwarding and accounting (performed on switches) from the routing decisions and advanced protocols (executed on a central controller). This segregation increases agility and flexibility of a networking infrastructure and reduces its operational expenses. OpenFlow controllers expose standard interfaces to facilitate variety of networking applications. In particular, a monitoring application can use these interfaces to push into the OpenFlow switches rules that collect traffic flo…
The adoption of Software Defined Networking (SDN) within traditional networks has provided operators the ability to manage diverse resources and easily reconfigure networks as requirements change. Recent research has extended this concept to IEEE 802.15.4 low-power wireless networks, which form a key component of the Internet of Things (IoT). However, the multiple traffic patterns necessary for SDN control makes it difficult to apply this approach to these highly challenging environments. This paper presents Atomic-SDN, a highly reliable and low-latency solution for SDN in low-power wireless. …
Security is an increasingly fundamental requirement in Software-Defined Networking (SDN). However, the pace of adoption of secure mechanisms has been slow, which we estimate to be a consequence of the performance overhead of traditional solutions and of the complexity of the support infrastructure required. As a first step to addressing these problems, we propose a modular secure SDN control plane communications architecture, KISS, with innovative solutions in the context of key distribution and secure channel support. A comparative analysis of the performance impact of essential security prim…

Data center applications use multicast as an effective method to reduce bandwidth cost. However, traditional multicast protocols designed for IP networks are usually bottlenecked by the limited state capacity on switches. In this paper, we propose a scalable multicast solution on fat tree networks based on the observation that data center multicast traffic has strong heterogeneity. We propose to remove the multicast management logic from switches and use the SDN controller to manage multicast groups. The proposed Dual-structure Multicast (DuSM) determines elephant and mice groups according to …
Smart optical networks are the next evolution of programmable networking and programmable automation of optical networks, with human-in-the-loop network control and management. The paper discusses this evolution and the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Being a state-of-the-art network, Software Defined Networking (SDN) decouples control and management planes from data plane of the forwarding devices by implementing both the control and management planes at logically centralized entity, called controller. This helps to make simple and easy both the network control and management. Failure of links occurs frequently in a computer network. To deal with the link failures, the existing approaches computes and installs multiple paths for a flow at the switches in SDN without considering the reliability value of the primary path. This incurs extra c…
This work develops novel algorithms for high-performance networking in the presence of obstacles based on a method for communicating via ultrasonic rays reflected at the obstacles. The rays are curves determined by the variable speed of sound and initial conditions and we develop ultrasonic ray models based on a system of differential equations. We present new parallel algorithms and software for shape and trajectory reconstruction of moving obstacles and show how the reconstructed reflection point of a ray at an obstacle is a natural router for messages between the ray's transmitter and recei…

In Software-Defined Networking (SDN), network applications use the logically centralized network view provided by the controller to remotely orchestrate the network switches. To avoid the controller being a single point of failure, traditional fault-tolerance techniques are employed to guarantee availability, a fundamental requirement in production environments. Unfortunately, these techniques fall short of ensuring correct network behaviour under controller failures. The problem of these techniques is that they deal with only part of the problem: guaranteeing that application and controller s…
Presence of a logically centralized controller in software-defined networks enables smart and fine-grained management of network traffic. Generally, traffic management includes measurement, analysis and control of traffic in order to improve resource utilization. This is done by inspecting corresponding performance requirements using metrics such as packet delay, jitter, loss rate and bandwidth utilization from global network view. There has been many works regarding traffic management of software-defined networks and how it could help to efficiently allocate resources. However, the vast major…

In technical terms, smart city projects present a complex set of requirements including a large number users with highly different and heterogeneous requirements. In this scenario, this paper proposes and analyses the impact and perspectives on adopting software-defined networking and artificial intelligence as innovative approaches for smart city project development an…
Software defined networking (SDN) represents a promising networking architecture that combines central management and network programmability. SDN separates the control plane from the data plane and moves the network management to a central point, called the controller, that can be programmed and used as the brain of the network. Recently, the research community has showed an increased tendency to benefit from the recent advancements in the artificial intelligence (AI) field to provide learning abilities and better decision making in SDN. In this study, we provide a detailed overview of the re…
Traditional communication networks consist of large sets of vendor-specific manually configurable devices which are hardwired with specific control logic or algorithms. The resulting networks comprise distributed control plane architectures that are complex in nature, difficult to integrate and operate, and are least efficient in terms of resource usage. However, the rapid increase in data traffic requires an integrated use of diverse access technologies and autonomic network operations with increased efficiency. Therefore, the concepts of Software Defined Networking (SDN) are proposed that de…
The emerging Software Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm separates the data plane from the control plane and centralizes network control in an SDN controller. Applications interact with controllers to implement network services, such as network transport with Quality of Service (QoS). SDN facilitates the virtualization of network functions so that multiple virtual networks can operate over a given installed physical network infrastructure. Due to the specific characteristics of optical (photonic) communication components and the high optical transmission capacities, SDN based optical networking…
Software-defined networking (SDN) attracts the attention of the research community in recent years, as evidenced by a large number of survey and review papers. The architecture of SDN clearly recognizes three planes: application, control, and data plane. The application plane executes network applications; control plane regulates the rules for the entire network based on the requests generated by network applications; and based on the set rules, the controller configures the switches in the data plane. The role of the switch in the data plane is to simply forward packets based on the instructi…

Deep packet inspection (DPI) has been extensively investigated in software-defined networking (SDN) as complicated attacks may intractably inject malicious payloads in the packets. Existing proprietary pattern-based or port-based third-party DPI tools can suffer from limitations in efficiently processing a large volume of data traffic. In this paper, a novel OpenFlow-enabled deep packet inspection (OFDPI) approach is proposed based on the SDN paradigm to provide adaptive and efficient packet inspection. First, OFDPI prescribes an early detection at the flow-level granularity by checking the IP…
