Prediction of future movement of stock prices has been a subject matter of many research work. In this work, we propose a hybrid approach for stock price prediction using machine learning and deep learning-based methods. We select the NIFTY 50 index values of the National Stock Exchange of India, over a period of four years, from January 2015 till December 2019. Based on the NIFTY data during the said period, we build various predictive models using machine learning approaches, and then use those models to predict the Close value of NIFTY 50 for the year 2019, with a forecast horizon of one week. For predicting the NIFTY index movement patterns, we use a number of classification methods, while for forecasting the actual Close values of NIFTY index, various regression models are built. We, then, augment our predictive power of the models by building a deep learning-based regression model using Convolutional Neural Network with a walk-forward validation. The CNN model is fine-tuned for its parameters so that the validation loss stabilizes with increasing number of iterations, and the training and validation accuracies converge. We exploit the power of CNN in forecasting the future NIFTY index values using three approaches which differ in number of variables used in forecasting, number of sub-models used in the overall models and, size of the input data for training the models. Extensive results are presented on various metrics for all classification and regression models. The results clearly indicate that CNN-based multivariate forecasting model is the most effective and accurate in predicting the movement of NIFTY index values with a weekly forecast horizon.
We present an outlook of the studies on correlations in the price timeseries of stocks, discussing the construction and applications of "asset tree". The topic discussed here should illustrate how the complex economic system (financial market) enrichens the list of existing dynamical systems that physicists have been studying for long.
Designing robust and accurate prediction models has been a viable research area since a long time. While proponents of a well-functioning market predictors believe that it is difficult to accurately predict market prices but many scholars disagree. Robust and accurate prediction systems will not only be helpful to the businesses but also to the individuals in making their financial investments. This paper presents an LSTM model with two different input approaches for predicting the short-term stock prices of two Indian companies, Reliance Industries and Infosys Ltd. Ten years of historic data …
This paper examines the applicability of Random Matrix Theory to portfolio management in finance. Starting from a group of normally distributed stochastic processes with given correlations we devise an algorithm for removing noise from the estimator of correlations constructed from measured time series. We then apply this algorithm to historical time series for the Standard and Poor's 500 index. We discuss to what extent the noise can be removed and whether the resulting underlying correlations are sufficiently accurate for portfolio management purposes.
Studying the micro-trading behaviors before stock price jumps is an important problem for financial regulations and investment decisions. In this study, we provide a new framework to study pre-jump trading behaviors based on multivariate time series analysis. Different from the existing literature, our methodology takes into account the temporal information embedded in the trading-related attributes and can better evaluate and compare the abnormality levels of different attributes. Moreover, it can explore the joint informativeness of the attributes as well as select a subset of highly informa…
The paper tackles the problem of deriving a topological structure among stock prices from high frequency historical values. Similar studies using low frequency data have already provided valuable insights. However, in those cases data need to be collected for a longer period and then they have to be detrended. An effective technique based on averaging a metric function on short subperiods of the observation horizon is suggested. Since a standard correlation-based metric is not capable of catching dependencies at different time instants, it is not expected to perform the best when dealing with …
In the paper we compare the modelling ability of discrete-time multivariate Stochastic Volatility models to describe the conditional correlations between stock index returns. We consider four trivariate SV models, which differ in the structure of the conditional covariance matrix. Specifications with zero, constant and time-varying conditional correlations are taken into account. As an example we study trivariate volatility models for the daily log returns on the WIG, SP500, and FTSE100 indexes. In order to formally compare the relative explanatory power of SV specifications we use the Bayesia…
In this paper we propose a bivariate generalization of a weighted indexed semi-Markov chains to study the high frequency price dynamics of traded stocks. We assume that financial returns are described by a weighted indexed semi-Markov chain model. We show, through Monte Carlo simulations, that the model is able to reproduce important stylized facts of financial time series like the persistence of volatility and at the same time it can reproduce the correlation between stocks. The model is applied to data from Italian stock market from 1 January 2007 until the end of December 2010.

Instabilities in the price dynamics of a large number of financial assets are a clear sign of systemic events. By investigating a set of 20 high cap stocks traded at the Italian Stock Exchange, we find that there is a large number of high frequency cojumps. We show that the dynamics of these jumps is described neither by a multivariate Poisson nor by a multivariate Hawkes model. We introduce a Hawkes one factor model which is able to capture simultaneously the time clustering of jumps and the high synchronization of jumps across assets.

Recent researches on stock prediction using deep learning methods has been actively studied. This is the task to predict the movement of stock prices in the future based on historical trends. The approach to predicting the movement based solely on the pattern of the historical movement of it on charts, not on fundamental values, is called the Technical Analysis, which can be divided into univariate and multivariate methods in the regression task. According to the latter approach, it is important to select different factors well as inputs to enhance the performance of the model. Moreover, its p…

Advances in deep neural network (DNN) architectures have enabled new prediction techniques for stock market data. Unlike other multivariate time-series data, stock markets show two unique characteristics: (i) \emph{multi-order dynamics}, as stock prices are affected by strong non-pairwise correlations (e.g., within the same industry); and (ii) \emph{internal dynamics}, as each individual stock shows some particular behaviour. Recent DNN-based methods capture multi-order dynamics using hypergraphs, but rely on the Fourier basis in the convolution, which is both inefficient and ineffective. In a…
The scaling properties of the time series of asset prices and trading volumes of stock markets are analysed. It is shown that similarly to the asset prices, the trading volume data obey multi-scaling length-distribution of low-variability periods. In the case of asset prices, such scaling behaviour can be used for risk forecasts: the probability of observing next day a large price movement is (super-universally) inversely proportional to the length of the ongoing low-variability period. Finally, a method is devised for a multi-factor scaling analysis. We apply the simplest, two-factor model to…
This paper presents a novel dynamic network autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (ARCH) model based on spatiotemporal ARCH models to forecast volatility in the US stock market. To improve the forecasting accuracy, the model integrates temporally lagged volatility information and information from adjacent nodes, which may instantaneously spill across the entire network. The model is also suitable for high-dimensional cases where multivariate ARCH models are typically no longer applicable. We adopt the theoretical foundations from spatiotemporal statistics and transfer the dynamic ARCH …
In this chapter we studied the nonlinear co-movements between the Mexican Crude Oil price, the Mexican Stock Market Index and the USD/MXN Exchange Rate, for the sample period from 1994 to date. We used a battery of nonlinear tests, cf. (Patterson & Ashley, 2000) and one multivariate test, in order to determine the dynamic co-movement exerted from the oil prices to the stock and exchange rate markets. Such co-movement and time windows are exposed using the Brooks & Hinich (1999) cross- bicorrelation statistical test. The effects of oil spills on other markets have been studied from different an…
