We study mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in which all the bases are unextendible maximally entangled ones. We first present a necessary and sufficient condition of constructing a pair of MUBs in $C^2 \otimes C^4$. Based on this condition, an analytical and necessary condition for constructing MUBs is given. Moreover we illustrate our approach by some detailed examples in $C^2 \otimes C^4$. The results are generalized to $C^2 \otimes C^d$ $(d\geq 3)$ and a concrete example in $C^2 \otimes C^8$ is given.
We generalize the notion of unextendible maximally entangled basis from bipartite systems to multipartite quantum systems. It is proved that there do not exist unextendible maximally entangled bases in three-qubit systems. Moreover, two types of unextendible maximally entangled bases are constructed in tripartite quantum systems and proved to be not mutually unbiased.
We systematically study the construction of mutually unbiased bases in $\mathbb{C}^{2}\bigotimes\mathbb{C}^{3}$, such that all the bases are unextendible maximally entangled ones. Necessary conditions of constructing a pair of mutually unbiased unextendible maximally entangled bases in $\mathbb{C}^{2}\bigotimes\mathbb{C}^{3}$ are derived. Explicit examples are presented.
We study unextendible maximally entangled basis in arbitrary bipartite spaces. A systematic way of constructing a set of $d^{2}$ orthonormal maximally entangled states in $\mathbb{C}^{d}\bigotimes\mathbb{C}^{d'}(\frac{d'}{2}<d<d')$ is provided. The complementary space of the set of these $d^{2}$ orthonormal maximally entangled states contains no maximally entangled states that are orthogonal to all of them. Furthermore, we investigate mutually unbiased bases in which all the bases are unextendible maximally entangled ones. We present two unextendible maximally entangled bases in $\mathbb{C}^{2…
Unextendible sets of Mutually Unbiased Bases (MUBs) are examined from the point of view of complementary subalgebras. We show, that the linear span of less than $d+1$ factors of $M_d \otimes M_d$ does not contain pure states, and therefore some complementary decompositions give rise to undextendable sets of MUBs. We provide some new complementary decompositions, and thus prove strong unextendibility of some set of MUBs.
We introduce the notion of the unextendible maximally entangled basis (UMEB), a set of orthonormal maximally entangled states in d \times d consisting of fewer that d^2 vectors which have no additional maximally entangled vectors orthogonal to all of them. We prove that UMEBs don't not exist for d=2 and give an explicit constructions for a 6-member UMEB with d=3 and a 12-member UMEB with d=4.
We study the locally unextendible non-maximally entangled basis (LUNMEB) in $H^{d}\bigotimes H^{d}$. We point out that there exists an error in the proof of the main result of LUNMEB [Quant. Inf. Comput. 12, 0271(2012)], which claims that there are at most $d$ orthogonal vectors in a LUNMEB, constructed from a given non-maximally entangled state. We show that both the proof and the main result are not correct in general. We present a counter example for $d=4$, in which five orthogonal vectors from a specific non-maximally entangled state are constructed. Besides, we completely solve the proble…
We study unextendible maximally entangled bases (UMEBs) in \(\mathbb {C}^{d}\otimes \mathbb {C}^{d^{\prime}}\) ($d<d'$). An operational method to construct UMEBs containing $d(d^{\prime}-1)$ maximally entangled vectors is established, and two UMEBs in \(\mathbb {C}^{5}\otimes \mathbb {C}^{6}\) and \(\mathbb {C}^{5}\otimes \mathbb {C}^{12}\) are given as examples. Furthermore, a systematic way of constructing UMEBs containing $d(d^{\prime}-r)$ maximally entangled vectors in \(\mathbb {C}^{d}\otimes \mathbb {C}^{d^{\prime}}\) is presented for $r=1,2,\cdots, d-1$. Correspondingly, two UMEBs in \(…
We provide a construction of sets of (d/2+1) mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in dimensions d=4,8 using maximal commuting classes of Pauli operators. We show that these incomplete sets cannot be extended further using the operators of the Pauli group. However, specific examples of sets of MUBs obtained using our construction are shown to be strongly unextendible; that is, there does not exist another vector that is unbiased with respect to the elements in the set. We conjecture the existence of such unextendible sets in higher dimensions (d=2^{n}, n>3) as well. Furthermore, we note an interestin…
We consider questions posed in a recent paper of Mandayam, Bandyopadhyay, Grassl and Wootters [10] on the nature of "unextendible mutually unbiased bases." We describe a conceptual framework to study these questions, using a connection proved by the author in [19] between the set of nonidentity generalized Pauli operators on the Hilbert space of $N$ $d$-level quantum systems, $d$ a prime, and the geometry of non-degenerate alternating bilinear forms of rank $N$ over finite fields $\mathbb{F}_d$. We then supply alternative and short proofs of results obtained in [10], as well as new general bou…
The construction of unextendible maximally entangled bases is tightly related to quantum information processing like local state discrimination. We put forward two constructions of UMEBs in $\mathbb {C}^{pd}\otimes \mathbb {C}^{qd}$($p\leq q$) based on the constructions of UMEBs in $\mathbb {C}^{d}\otimes \mathbb {C}^{d}$ and in $\mathbb {C}^{p}\otimes \mathbb {C}^{q}$, which generalizes the results in [Phys. Rev. A. 94, 052302 (2016)] by two approaches. Two different 48-member UMEBs in $\mathbb {C}^{6}\otimes \mathbb {C}^{9}$ have been constructed in detail.
We investigate the unextendible maximally entangled bases in $\mathbb{C}^{d}\bigotimes\mathbb{C}^{d}$ and present a $30$-number UMEB construction in $\mathbb{C}^{6}\bigotimes\mathbb{C}^{6}$. For higher dimensional case, we show that for a given $N$-number UMEB in $\mathbb{C}^{d}\bigotimes\mathbb{C}^{d}$, there is a $\widetilde{N}$-number, $\widetilde{N}=(qd)^2-(d^2-N)$, UMEB in $\mathbb{C}^{qd}\bigotimes\mathbb{C}^{qd}$ for any $q\in\mathbb{N}$. As an example, for $\mathbb{C}^{12n}\bigotimes\mathbb{C}^{12n}$ systems, we show that there are at least two sets of UMEBs which are not equivalent.
We introduce the concept of the locally unextendible non-maximally entangled basis (LUNMEB) in $H^d \bigotimes H^d$. It is shown that such a basis consists of $d$ orthogonal vectors for a non-maximally entangled state. However, there can be a maximum of $(d-1)^2$ orthogonal vectors for non-maximally entangled state if it is maximally entangled in $(d-1)$ dimensional subspace. Such a basis plays an important role in determining the number of classical bits that one can send in a superdense coding protocol using a non-maximally entangled state as a resource. By constructing appropriate POVM oper…
A set of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) is said to be unextendible if there does not exist another basis that is unbiased with respect to the given set. Here, we prove the existence of smaller sets of MUBs in prime-squared dimensions ($d=p^{2}$) that cannot be extended to a complete set using the generalized Pauli operators. We further observe an interesting connection between the existence of unextendible sets and the tightness of entropic uncertainty relations (EURs) in these dimensions. In particular, we show that our construction of unextendible sets of MUBs naturally leads to sets of $p+1…
We solved the unextendible maximally entangled basis (UMEB) problem in $\mathbb{C}^{d}\bigotimes\mathbb{C}^{d'}(d\neq d')$,the results turn out to be that there always exist a UMEB.In addition, there might be two sets of UMEB with different numbers. The main difficult is to prove the unextendibility of the set of states. We give an explicit construction of UMEB by considering the Schmidt number of the complementary space of the states we construct.

We investigate the relation between unextendible product bases (UPB) and Bell inequalities found recently in [R. Augusiak et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 070401 (2011)]. We first review the procedure introduced there that associates to any set of mutually orthogonal product vectors in a many-qubit Hilbert space a Bell inequality. We then show that if a set of mutually orthogonal product vectors can be completed to a full basis, then the associated Bell inequality is trivial, in the sense of not being violated by any nonsignalling correlations. This implies that the relevant Bell inequalities tha…
We completely characterize the condition when a tile structure provides an unextendible product basis (UPB), and construct UPBs of different large sizes in $\mathbb{C}^m\otimes\mathbb{C}^n$ for any $n\geq m\geq 3$. This solves an open problem in [S. Halder et al., Phys. Rev. A 99, 062329 (2019)]. As an application, we show that our UPBs of size $(mn-4\lfloor\frac{m-1}{2}\rfloor)$ in $\mathbb{C}^m\otimes\mathbb{C}^n$ can be perfectly distinguished by local operations and classical communications assisted with a $\lceil\frac{m}{2}\rceil\otimes\lceil\frac{m}{2}\rceil$ maximally entangled state.
Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) provide a standard tool in the verification of quantum states, especially when harnessing a complete set for optimal quantum state tomography. In this work, we investigate the detection of entanglement via inequivalent sets of MUBs, with a particular focus on unextendible MUBs. These are bases for which an additional unbiased basis cannot be constructed and, consequently, are unsuitable for quantum state verification. Here, we show that unextendible MUBs, as well as other inequivalent sets in higher dimensions, can be more effective in the verification of entangl…
Special unextendible entangled basis of "type $k$" (SUEBk), a set of incomplete orthonormal special entangled states of "type $k$" whose complementary space has no special entangled state of "type $k$". This concept can be seem as a generalization of the unextendible product basis (UPB) introduced by Bennett et al. in [ Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{82}, 5385(1999) ] and the unextendible maximally entangled basis (UMEB) introduced by Bravyi and Smolin in [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{84}, 042306(2011)]. We present an efficient method to construct sets of SUEBk. The main strategy here is to decompose the wh…
The unextendible product basis (UPB) is generalized to the unextendible entangled basis with any arbitrarily given Schmidt number $k$ (UEBk) for any bipartite system $\mathbb{C}^d\otimes\mathbb{C}^{d'}$ ($2\leq k<d\leq d'$), which can also be regarded as a generalization of the unextendible maximally entangled basis (UMEB). A general way of constructing such a basis with arbitrary $d$ and $d'$ is proposed. Consequently, it is shown that there are at least $k-r$ (here $r=d$ mod $k$, or $r=d'$ mod $k$) sets of UEBk when $d$ or $d'$ is not the multiple of $k$, while there are at least $2(k-1)$ se…
We develop a new technique to construct mutually unbiased tripartite absolutely maximally entangled bases. We first explore the tripartite absolutely maximally entangled bases and mutually unbiased bases in $\mathbb{C}^{d} \otimes \mathbb{C}^{d} \otimes \mathbb{C}^{d}$ based on mutually orthogonal Latin squares. Then we generalize the approach to the case of $\mathbb{C}^{d_{1}} \otimes \mathbb{C}^{d_{2}} \otimes \mathbb{C}^{d_{1}d_{2}}$ by mutually weak orthogonal Latin squares. The concise direct constructions of mutually unbiased tripartite absolutely maximally entangled bases are remarkably…
Mutually unbiased bases which is also maximally entangled bases is called mutually unbiased maximally entangled bases (MUMEBs). We study the construction of MUMEBs in bipartite system. In detail, we construct 2(p^a-1) MUMEBs in C^d\otimes C^d by properties of Guss sums for arbitrary odd d. It improves the known lower bound p^a-1 for odd d. Certainly, it also generalizes the lower bound 2(p^a-1) for d being a single prime power. Furthermore, we construct MUMEBs in C^d\otimes C^{kd} for general k>= 2 and odd d. We get the similar lower bounds as $k,b$ are both single prime powers. Particularly, …
We consider the state determination problem using Mutually Unbiased Bases(MUBs). For spin-1, spin-3/2 and spin-2 systems, analogous to Pauli operators of spin-1/2 system, which are experimentally implementable and correspond to the optimum measurement in characterizing the density matrix, we describe a procedure to construct an orthonormal set of operators from MUBs. The constructed operators are maximally commuting, can be physically realized, and correspond to physical observables. The method of construction is general enough to allow for extensions to higher-dimensional spin systems and arb…
Relative and center of mass cordinates are used to generalize mutually unbiased bases (MUB) and define mutually unbiased bases (MUCB). Maximal entangled states are given as product staes in the collective varibles
A new way of constructing unextendible maximally entangled basis (UMEB) from maximally entangled basis (MEB) is proposed. Consequently, it is shown that if there is an $N$-member UMEB in $\mathbb{C}^d\otimes \mathbb{C}^d$, then there exists a $(qd)^2-q(d^2-N)$-member UMEB in $\mathbb{C}^{qd}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{qd}$ for any $q\in\mathbb{N}$. This improves the results in [Phys. Rev. A 90, 034301(2014)], which shows that there exists a $(qd)^2-(d^2-N)$-member UMEB in $\mathbb{C}^{qd}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{qd}$ provided that an $N$-member UMEB exsits in $\mathbb{C}^d\otimes \mathbb{C}^d$. In addition…
We study mutually unbiased maximally entangled bases (MUMEB's) in bipartite system $\mathbb{C}^d\otimes\mathbb{C}^d (d \geq 3)$. We generalize the method to construct MUMEB's given in [16], by using any commutative ring $R$ with $d$ elements and generic character of $(R,+)$ instead of $\mathbb{Z}_d=\mathbb{Z}/d\mathbb{Z}$. Particularly, if $d=p_1^{a_1}p_2^{a_2}\ldots p_s^{a_s}$ where $p_1, \ldots, p_s$ are distinct primes and $3\leq p_1^{a_1}\leq\cdots\leq p_s^{a_s}$, we present $p_1^{a_1}-1$ MUMEB's in $\mathbb{C}^d\otimes\mathbb{C}^d$ by taking $R=\mathbb{F}_{p_1^{a_1}}\oplus\cdots\oplus\mat…
We introduce orthogonal quantum Latin squares, which restrict to traditional orthogonal Latin squares, and investigate their application in quantum information science. We use quantum Latin squares to build maximally entangled bases, and show how a pair of mutually unbiased maximally entangled bases can be constructed in square dimension from orthogonal quantum Latin squares. We also compare our construction to an existing construction due to Beth and Wocjan and show that ours is strictly more general.
We show that there exist sets of three mutually orthogonal $d$-dimensional maximally entangled states which cannot be perfectly distinguished using one-way local operations and classical communication (LOCC) for arbitrarily large values of $d$. This contrasts with several well-known families of maximally entangled states, for which any three states can be perfectly distinguished. We then show that two-way LOCC is sufficient to distinguish these examples. We also show that any three mutually orthogonal $d$-dimensional maximally entangled states can be perfectly distinguished using measurements …
Based on maximally entangled states, we explore the constructions of mutually unbiased bases in bipartite quantum systems. We present a new way to construct mutually unbiased bases by difference matrices in the theory of combinatorial designs. In particular, we establish $q$ mutually unbiased bases with $q-1$ maximally entangled bases and one product basis in $\mathbb{C}^q\otimes \mathbb{C}^q$ for arbitrary prime power $q$. In addition, we construct maximally entangled bases for dimension of composite numbers of non-prime power, such as five maximally entangled bases in $\mathbb{C}^{12}\otimes…

Based on a recent proposal [Phys. Rev. A 71, 062337 (2005)], we have experimentally realized two photon polarization qutrits by using non-maximally entangled states and linear optical transformations. By this technique high fidelity mutually unbiased qutrits are generated at a high brilliance level.
The two observables are complementary if they cannot be measured simultaneously, however they become maximally complementary if their eigenstates are mutually unbiased. Only then the measurement of one observable gives no information about the other observable. The spin projection operators onto three mutually orthogonal directions are maximally complementary only for the spin 1/2. For the higher spin numbers they are no longer unbiased. In this work we examine the properties of spin 1 Mutually Unbiased Bases (MUBs) and look for the physical meaning of the corresponding operators. We show that…
Mutually unbiased bases plays a central role in quantum mechanics and quantum information processing. As an important class of mutually unbiased bases, mutually unbiased maximally entangled bases (MUMEBs) in bipartite systems have attracted much attention in recent years. In the paper, we try to construct MUMEBs in $\mathbb{C}^{2^s} \otimes \mathbb{C}^{2^s}$ by using Galois rings, which is different from the work in \cite{xu2}, where finite fields are used. As applications, we obtain several new types of MUMEBs in $\mathbb{C}^{2^s}\otimes\mathbb{C}^{2^s}$ and prove that $M(2^s,2^s)\geq 3(2^s-1…
We study the verification of maximally entangled states by virtue of the simplest measurement settings: local projective measurements without adaption. We show that optimal protocols are in one-to-one correspondence with complex projective 2-designs constructed from orthonormal bases. Optimal protocols with minimal measurement settings are in one-to-one correspondence with complete sets of mutually unbiased bases. Based on this observation, optimal protocols are constructed explicitly for any local dimension, which can also be applied to estimating the fidelity with the target state and to det…
We develop a strong connection between maximally commuting bases of orthogonal unitary matrices and mutually unbiased bases. A necessary condition of the existence of mutually unbiased bases for any finite dimension is obtained. Then a constructive proof of the existence of mutually unbiased bases for dimensions which are power of a prime is presented. It is also proved that in any dimension d the number of mutually unbiased bases is at most d+1. An explicit representation of mutually unbiased observables in terms of Pauli matrices are provided for d=2^m.
We investigate the interplay between mutual unbiasedness and product bases for multiple qudits of possibly different dimensions. A product state of such a system is shown to be mutually unbiased to a product basis only if each of its factors is mutually unbiased to all the states which occur in the corresponding factors of the product basis. This result implies both a tight limit on the number of mutually unbiased product bases which the system can support and a complete classification of mutually unbiased product bases for multiple qubits or qutrits. In addition, only maximally entangled stat…
We examine the problem of exhibiting Bell nonlocality for a two-qudit entangled pure state using a randomly chosen set of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs). Interestingly, even if we employ only two-setting Bell inequalities, we find a significant chance of obtaining a Bell violation if the two parties are individually allowed to measure a sufficient number of MUBs. In particular, for the case of maximally entangled qutrits and ququarts, our numerical estimates indicate that we can obtain near-guaranteed Bell violation by considering only such Bell inequalities. The case of maximally entangled qu…
Every Maximally Entangled State (MES) of two d-dimensional particles is shown to be a product state of suitably chosen collective coordinates. The state may be viewed as defining a "point" in a "phase space" like d^2 array representing d^2 orthonormal Maximally Entangled States basis for the Hilbert space. A finite geometry view of MES is presented and its relation with the afore mentioned "phase space" is outlined: "straight lines" in the space depict product of single particle mutually unbiased basis (MUB) states, inverting thereby Schmidt's diagonalization scheme in giving a product single …
Employing the general BXOR operation and local state discrimination, the mixed state of the form ρ^{(k)}_{d}=\frac{1}{d^{2}}\sum_{m,n=0}^{d-1}(|ϕ_{mn}><ϕ_{mn}|)^{\otim es k} is proved to be quasi-pure, where $\{|ϕ_{mn}>\}$ is the canonical set of mutually orthogonal maximally entangled states in $d\times d$. Therefore irreversibility does not occur in the process of distillation for this family of states. Also, the distillable entanglement is calculated explicitly.
Entropic uncertainty relations, based on sums of entropies of probability distributions arising from different measurements on a given pure state, can be seen as a generalization of the Heisenberg uncertainty relation that is in many cases a more useful way to quantify incompatibility between observables. Of particular interest are relationships between `mutually unbiased' observables, which are maximally incompatible. Lower bounds on the sum of entropies for sets of two such observables, and for complete sets of observables within a space of given dimension, have been found. This paper explor…
Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) are a crucial ingredient for many protocols in quantum information processing. Measurements performed in these bases are unbiased to the maximally possible extent, which is used to prove randomness or secrecy of measurement results. In this work we show that certain properties of sets of MUBs crucially depend on their specific choice, including, somewhat surprisingly, measurement outcome labelling. If measurements are chosen in a coherent way, the secrecy of the result can be completely lost for specific sets of MUB measurements, while partially retained for othe…
We examine the existence and structure of particular sets of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in bipartite qudit systems. In contrast to well-known power-of-prime MUB constructions, we restrict ourselves to using maximally entangled stabilizer states as MUB vectors. Consequently, these bipartite entangled stabilizer MUBs (BES MUBs) provide no local information, but are sufficient and minimal for decomposing a wide variety of interesting operators including (mixtures of) Jamiolkowski states, entanglement witnesses and more. The problem of finding such BES MUBs can be mapped, in a natural way, to …
Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) and symmetric informationally complete projectors (SICs) are crucial to many conceptual and practical aspects of quantum theory. Here, we develop their role in quantum nonlocality by: i) introducing families of Bell inequalities that are maximally violated by $d$-dimensional MUBs and SICs respectively, ii) proving device-independent certification of natural operational notions of MUBs and SICs, and iii) using MUBs and SICs to develop optimal-rate and nearly optimal-rate protocols for device independent quantum key distribution and device-independent quantum rando…
Quantum measurements based on mutually unbiased bases are commonly used in quantum information processing, as they are generally viewed as being maximally incompatible and complementary. Here we quantify precisely the degree of incompatibility of mutually unbiased bases (MUB) using the notion of noise robustness. Specifically, for sets of $k$ MUB in dimension $d$, we provide upper and lower bounds on this quantity. Notably, we get a tight bound in several cases, in particular for complete sets of $k=d+1$ MUB (given $d$ is a prime power). On the way, we also derive a general upper bound on the …
Mutually unbiased measurements are a generalization of mutually unbiased bases in which the measurement operators need not to be rank one projectors. In a $d$-dimension space, the purity of measurement elements ranges from $1/d$ for the measurement operators corresponding to maximally mixed states to $1$ for the rank one projectors. In this contribution, we provide a class of MUM that encompasses the full range of purity. Similar to the MUB in which the operators corresponding to different outcomes of the same measurement commute mutually, our class of MUM possesses this sense of compatibility…
Bell inequalities are an important tool in device-independent quantum information processing because their violation can serve as a certificate of relevant quantum properties. Probably the best known example of a Bell inequality is due to Clauser, Horne, Shimony and Holt (CHSH), which is defined in the simplest scenario involving two dichotomic measurements and whose all key properties are well understood. There have been many attempts to generalise the CHSH Bell inequality to higher-dimensional quantum systems, however, for most of them the maximal quantum violation---the key quantity for mos…
Finite geometry is used to underpin finite, two d-dimensional particles Hilbert space, d=prime 6= 2. A central role is allotted to states with mutual unbiased bases (MUB) labeling. Dual affine plane geometry (DAPG) points underpin single particle, MUB labeled, product states. The DAPG lines are shown to underpin maximally entangled states which form an orthonormal basis spanning the space. The relevance of mutually unbiased collective coordinates bases (MUCB) for dealing with maximally entangled states is discussed and shown to provide an economic alternative mode of study. These maximally ent…
We construct two mutually unbiased bases by maximally entangled states (MUMEB$s$) in $\mathbb{C}^{2}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{3}$. This is the first example of MUMEB$s$ in $\mathbb{C}^{d}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{d'}$ when $d\nmid d'$, namely $d'$ is not divisible by $d$. We show that they cannot be extended to four MUBs in $\mathbb{C}^6$. We propose a recursive construction of mutually unbiased bases formed by special entangled states with a fixed Schmidt number $k$ (MUSEB$k$s). It shows that $\min \{t_{1},t_{2}\}$ MUSEB$k_{1}k_{2}$s in $\mathbb{C}^{pd}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{qd'}$ can be constructed from $t…
Goyeneche et al.\ [Phys.\ Rev.\ A \textbf{97}, 062326 (2018)] introduced several classes of quantum combinatorial designs, namely quantum Latin squares, quantum Latin cubes, and the notion of orthogonality on them. They also showed that mutually orthogonal quantum Latin arrangements can be entangled in the same way in which quantum states are entangled. Moreover, they established a relationship between quantum combinatorial designs and a remarkable class of entangled states called $k$-uniform states, i.e., multipartite pure states such that every reduction to $k$ parties is maximally mixed. In…
A complete orthonormal basis of N-qutrit unitary operators drawn from the Pauli Group consists of the identity and 9^N-1 traceless operators. The traceless ones partition into 3^N+1 maximally commuting subsets (MCS's) of 3^N-1 operators each, whose joint eigenbases are mutually unbiased. We prove that Pauli factor groups of order 3^N are isomorphic to all MCS's, and show how this result applies in specific cases. For two qutrits, the 80 traceless operators partition into 10 MCS's. We prove that 4 of the corresponding basis sets must be separable, while 6 must be totally entangled (and Bell-lik…
We introduce the notion of entanglement of subspaces as a measure that quantify the entanglement of bipartite states in a randomly selected subspace. We discuss its properties and in particular we show that for maximally entangled subspaces it is additive. Furthermore, we show that maximally entangled subspaces can play an important role in the study of quantum error correction codes. We discuss both degenerate and non-degenerate codes and show that the subspace spanned by the logical codewords of a non-degenerate code is a 2k-totally (maximally) entangled subspace. As for non-degenerate codes…
Mutually unbiased bases correspond to highly useful pairs of measurements in quantum information theory. In the smallest composite dimension, six, it is known that between three and seven mutually unbiased bases exist, with a decades-old conjecture, known as Zauner's conjecture, stating that there exist at most three. Here we tackle Zauner's conjecture numerically through the construction of Bell inequalities for every pair of integers $n,d \ge 2$ that can be maximally violated in dimension $d$ if and only if $n$ MUBs exist in that dimension. Hence we turn Zauner's conjecture into an optimisat…
Mutually unbiased bases for quantum degrees of freedom are central to all theoretical investigations and practical exploitations of complementary properties. Much is known about mutually unbiased bases, but there are also a fair number of important questions that have not been answered in full as yet. In particular, one can find maximal sets of ${N+1}$ mutually unbiased bases in Hilbert spaces of prime-power dimension ${N=p^\m}$, with $p$ prime and $\m$ a positive integer, and there is a continuum of mutually unbiased bases for a continuous degree of freedom, such as motion along a line. But n…
The purpose of this paper is to study the equivalence relation on unitary bases defined by R. F. Werner [{\it J. Phys. A: Math. Gen.} {\bf 34} (2001) 7081], relate it to local operations on maximally entangled vectors bases, find an invariant for equivalence classes in terms of certain commuting systems, and, relate it to mutually unbiased bases and Hadamard matrices. Illustrations are given in the context of latin squares and projective representations as well. Applications to quantum tomography are indicated.
The method for preparation of a two-qubit state on two spins-1/2 that mutually interact through an auxiliary spin is proposed. The essence of the method is that, initially, the three spins evolve under the action of an external magnetic field during a predefined period of time. Then, the auxiliary spin is measured by a monochromatic electromagnetic radiation that allows obtaining a certain state of the remaining spins. We study the entanglement of this state and obtain the condition for achieving the maximally entangled state. The implementation of the method on the physical system of nuclear …
We extend Bravyi and Smolin's construction for obtaining unextendible maximally entangled bases (UMEBs) from equiangular lines. We show that equiangular real projections of rank more than 1 also exhibit examples of UMEBs. These projections arise in the context of optimal subspace packing in Grassmannian spaces. This generalization yields new examples of UMEBs in infinitely many dimensions of the underlying system. Consequently, we find a set of orthogonal unitary bases for symmetric subspaces of matrices in odd dimensions. This finding validates a recent conjecture about the mixed unitary rank…
A pure quantum state of N subsystems with d levels each is called k-multipartite maximally entangled state, written k-uniform, if all its reductions to k qudits are maximally mixed. These states form a natural generalization of N-qudits GHZ states which belong to the class 1-uniform states. We establish a link between the combinatorial notion of orthogonal arrays and k-uniform states and prove the existence of several new classes of such states for N-qudit systems. In particular, known Hadamard matrices allow us to explicitly construct 2-uniform states for an arbitrary number of N>5 qubits. We…
One way to construct a maximal set of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in a prime-power dimensional Hilbert space is by means of finite phase-space methods. MUBs obtained in this way are covariant with respect to some subgroup of the group of all affine symplectic phase-space transformations. However, this construction is not canonical: as a consequence, many different choices of covariance sugroups are possible. In particular, when the Hilbert space is $2^n$ dimensional, it is known that covariance with respect to the full group of affine symplectic phase-space transformations can never be achi…
