When the the shadow image of a supermassive black hole in the center of M87 was obtained a new era in the observational astrophysics began. The resolution improvement would allow to test extended gravity models at event horizon scales. We develop the method allowing to take into account the black hole rotation in black hole shadow modelling. It is demonstrated that the shadow of a black hole with a diameter smaller than $4R_{Sw}$ ($R_{Sw} = 2M$) cannot be represented in the terms of pure Kerr-Newman metric. Therefore, the detection of a shadow of such size would indicate that further expansions must be taken into account. This fact could give new indications on the detailed form of the theory of gravity at the considered scales.}
We study the influence of the cosmic expansion on the size of the shadow of a spinning black hole observed by a comoving observer. We first consider that the expansion is driven by a cosmological constant only and build the connection between the Kerr-de Sitter metric and the FLRW metric. We clarify that the notion of a comoving observer is well defined in the spacetime of a spinning black hole only in the sense of being asymptotic. The angular size of the shadow for a comoving observer is calculated. Significantly we find that the angular size approaches a non-zero finite value for a distant …
We examine the shadow of a rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole in Einstein gravity coupled to a Maxwell field and a dilaton. The size and the shape of the shadow depend on the mass, the charge, and the angular momentum of the compact object. For a given mass, the size increases with the rotation parameter and decreases with the electric charge. The distortion with respect to the non rotating case grows with the charge and the rotation parameter. For fixed values of these parameters, the shadow is slightly larger and less deformed than in the Kerr-Newman case.
Riemannian Killing conserved currents are used to find the energy spectra of classical spinning particles moving around a spinning string in Einstein-Cartan (EC) theory of gravity. It is shown that a continuos spectrum is obtained for planar open orbits the energy shift between the upper and lower bounds obtained for circular planar orbits. A spin-spin effect between the spin of the test particle and the spin of the spinning string contributes to the energy spectrum splitting.
The problem of spinning and spin deviation equations for particles as defined by their microscopic effect has led many authors to revisit non-Riemannian geometry for being described torsion and its relation with the spin of elementary particles. We obtain a new method to detect the existence of torsion by deriving the equations of spin deviations in different classes of non-Riemannian geometries, using a modified Bazanski method. We find that translational gauge potentials and rotational gauge potentials regulate the spin deviation equation in the presence of Poincare gauge field theory of gra…
We study the shadow produced by a spinning Kaluza-Klein black hole in Einstein gravity coupled to a Maxwell field and a dilaton. The size and the shape of the shadow depend on the mass, the charge, and the angular momentum. We find that, for fixed values of these parameters, the shadow is slightly larger and less deformed than for its Kerr-Newman counterpart.
The spinning-hairy black holes that occur in Einstein gravity supplemented by a doublet of complex scalar fields are constructed within an extension of the model by a $U(1)$ gauge symmetry involving a massless vector potential. The hairy black holes then acquire an electric charge and a magnetic moment; their domain of existence is discussed in terms of the gauge coupling constant.
We develop a new model of a spinning particle in Brans-Dicke spacetime using a metric-compatible connection with torsion. The particle's spin vector is shown to be Fermi-parallel (by the Levi-Civita connection) along its worldline (an autoparallel of the metric-compatible connection) when neglecting spin-curvature coupling.

Recent experimental work has determined that free falling $^{87}$Rb atoms on Earth, with vertically aligned spins, follow geodesics, thus apparently ruling out spin--gravitation interactions. It is showed that while some spinning matter models coupled to gravitation referenced to in that work seem to be ruled out by the experiment, those same experimental results confirm theoretical results derived from a Lagrangian description of spinning particles coupled to gravity constructed over forty years ago. A proposal to carry out (similar but) different experiments which will help to test the valid…
We present a new class of spinning black hole solutions in $(2+1)$-dimensional general relativity minimally coupled to a dilaton with potential $e^{bϕ}Λ$. When $b=4$, the corresponding spinning black hole is a solution of low energy $(2+1)$-dimensional string gravity. Apart from the limiting case of the $BTZ$ black hole, these spinning black holes have no inner horizon and a curvature singularity only at the origin. We compute the mass and angular momentum parameters of the solutions at spatial infinity, as well as their temperature and entropy.
Levin (gr-qc/9910040) has shown that spinning compact binaries can be chaotic at second post-Newtonian order. However, when higher order dissipational effects are included, the dynamics will no longer be chaotic, though the evolution may still be unpredictable in a practical sense. I discuss some of the additional work that needs to be done to decide how this unpredictability might affect gravitational wave detectors such as LIGO.
We construct a charged rotating black hole in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity starting from charged black hole in 4D EGB gravity using complex coordinate transformations suggested by Newman-Janis. Further, we have studied the null geodesics to investigate the shape of the shadow cast by a rotating charged black hole in 4D EGB gravity. Also we have discussed their horizon properties and shadow cast. The phenomenon of black hole shadows alongwith the horizon structure and energy emission has been analysed to see the influence of Gauss-Bonnet term and black hole charge on horizon, shadow, …
Spinning black holes in dynamical Einstein-Chern-Simons gravity are constructed by directly solving the field equations, without resorting to any perturbative expansion. This model is obtained by adding to the Einstein-Hilbert action a particular higher-curvature correction: the Pontryagin density, linearly coupled to a scalar field. The spinning black holes are stationary, axi-symmetric, asymptotically flat generalisations of the Kerr solution of Einstein's gravity, but they possess a non-trivial (odd-parity) scalar field. They are regular on and outside the horizon and satisfy a generalized …
We study the shadow cast by rotating black holes surrounded by plasma in the context of the 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity. The metric for these black holes results from applying the Newman-Janis algorithm to a spherically symmetric solution. We obtain the contour of the shadow for a plasma frequency model that allows a separable Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We introduce three observables in order to characterize the position, size, and shape of the shadow.
We calculate the characteristics of the "black hole shadow" for a rotating, neutral black hole in fourth-order conformal Weyl gravity. It is shown that the morphology is not significantly affected by the underlying framework, except for very large masses. Conformal gravity black hole shadows would also significantly differ from their general relativistic counterparts if the values of the main conformal gravity parameters, $γ$ and $κ$, were increased by several orders of magnitude. Such increased values for $γ$ and $κ$ are currently ruled out by gravitational phenomenology. Therefore, it is unl…
Recently there has been a surge of interest in regularizing, a $ D \to 4 $ limit of, the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity, and the resulting regularized $4D$ EGB gravity has nontrivial dynamics. The theory admits spherically symmetric black holes generalizing the Schwarzschild black holes. We consider the rotating black hole in regularized $4D$ EGB gravity and discuss their horizon properties and shadow cast. The effects of the GB coupling parameter on the shape and size of shadows are investigated in the context of recent M87* observations from the EHT. Interestingly, for a given spin para…
We study the shadow of a charged rotating black hole in $f(R)$ gravity. This black hole is characterized by mass, $M$, spin, $a$, electric charge, $Q$ and $R_{0}$ which is proportional to cosmological constant. We analyze the image of the black hole's shadow in four types 1) at $r\rightarrow\infty$, 2) at $r\rightarrow r_{o}$, in vacuum, 3) at $r\rightarrow\infty$, 4) at $r\rightarrow r_{o}$, for an observer at the presence of plasma. Moreover, we investigate the effect of spin, charge and modfication of gravity on the shape of shadow. In addition, we use two observables, the radius $R_{s}$ an…
It is presented an exact solution of straight spinning cosmic strings in Brans-Dicke theory of gravitation. The possibility of the existence of closed timelike curves around these cosmic strings is analyzed. Furthermore, the stability about the formation of the topological defect discussed here is checked. It is shown the existence of a suitable choice for the integration constants in which closed timelike curves are not allowed. We also verify if it is possible that the obtained spacetime can be the source that describes the observed rotational curves in some galaxies.
We study the gravitational field of ultrarelativistic spinning objects (gyratons) in a modified gravity theory with higher derivatives. In particular, we focus on a special class of such theories with an infinite number of derivatives known as "ghost-free gravity" that include a non-local form factor such as $\exp(-\Box\ell^2)$, where $\ell$ is the scale of non-locality. First, we obtain solutions of the linearized ghost-free equations for stationary spinning objects. To obtain gyraton solutions we boost these metrics and take their Penrose limit. This approach allows us to perform calculation…
The M87* black hole shadow observation by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has enabled us to test the modified gravity theories in the extreme-field regime and estimating the black hole parameters. Having this assertion, we investigate the Kerr-like rotating black holes in $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity and deduce their shadows. Considering the inclination angle $θ_0=17^o$, we show that the EGB black hole shadows are smaller and more distorted than for the Kerr black holes. Modelling the M87* black hole as the EGB black hole, we predict the shadow angular size $35.7888μas\leq θ_d\le…
We study the shadows of disformal black holes in vector-tensor Galileons modified gravity. Our analysis shows that the apparent image of the black hole in the observer's sky is non-spherical and cuspy, which is in contrast to the Kerr and Kerr-Newman cases. The non-trivial silhouette of the apparent image of the black hole provides novel templates for the current astrophysical observations. Moreover, due to the non-minimal coupling of the vector field to gravity the disformal black hole supports regular horizons for spin parameter exceeding the ADM mass. Finally, the shadows of the massless li…
Considering a charged black hole (BH) surrounded by a perfect fluid radiation field (PFRF) in Rastall gravity, we investigate this BH shadow and photon sphere on different spherical accretions backgrounds. The effect of the PFRF parameter/BH charge on the critical impact parameter is studied by investigating the light deflection near this BH. The luminosity of these BH shadows in different spherical accretions is obtained, respectively. It is found that the shadow of this BH with infalling spherical accretion is darker than static spherical accretion, and the photon sphere with infalling spher…
The first images of black hole shadows open new possibilities to constrain modern extended gravity theories. We present the method of shadow background calculation for black hole solutions in the form of Taylor series where $g_{11} = - g_{00}^{-1}$. The method is extended to general non-rotating case $g_{11} \neq - g_{00}^{-1}$. The results of the analysis are compared with the predictions of General relativity taking into account the Event Horizon Telescope data. The results for the Horndesky model with the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, loop quantum gravity, Bumblebee model and Gauss-Bonnet gravity…
We analytically investigate the shadows cast by rotating black holes in the asymptotically safe gravity (ASG) by deriving complete null geodesics and observables using the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and Carter separable method. It turns out that the apparent shape and size of the shadow depend on the ASG parameters ($ζ, γ$) in addition to other black hole parameters ($M, a$). The size of black hole shadows monotonically decreases and shadows get more distorted with increasing values of ASG parameters when compared with the Kerr black hole shadows. In turn, we use shadow observables to estimate b…
In this essay we look at the possibility of vacuum production of very low frequency electromagnetic radiation from a gravitational wave background (i.e. gravity's light). We also propose that this counterpart electromagnetic radiation should be detectable by a lunar orbiting satellite which is periodically occulted by the Moon (i.e. in the shadow of the Moon). For concreteness we consider the possibility of detection of both the gravitational wave and hypothesized electromagnetic radiation counterpart from the supernova core collapse of Betelgeuse.
In this work, we give a general class of solutions of the spinning cosmic string in Einstein's theory of gravity. After treating same problem in Einstein Cartan (EC) theory of gravity, the exact solution satisfying both exterior and interior space-times representing a spin fluid moving along the symmetry axis is presented in the EC theory. The existence of closed timelike curves in this spacetime are also examined.
We set out to bridge the gap between regular black-hole spacetimes and observations of a black-hole shadow by the Event Horizon Telescope. We explore modifications of spinning and non-spinning black-hole spacetimes inspired by asymptotically safe quantum gravity which features a scale dependence of the Newton coupling. As a consequence, the predictions of our model, such as the shadow shape and size, depend on one free parameter determining the curvature scale at which deviations from General Relativity set in. In more general new-physics settings, it can also depart substantially from the Pla…
In this paper, we explore the source of gravitational radiation in the context of $f(R)$ gravity by considering axially symmetric dissipative dust under geodesic condition. We evaluate scalars associated with electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor for both non-spinning (at the center) and spinning (in the surrounding of the center) fluids of the configuration. For this purpose, we use the evolution as well as constraint equations for kinematical quantities and Weyl tensor. Finally, we investigate the existence of gravitational radiation through super-Poynting vector. It is found that t…
We analyze the behavior of a spinning particle in gravity, both from a quantum and a classical point of view. We infer that, since the interaction between the space-time curvature and a spinning test particle is expected, then the main features of such an interaction can get light on which degrees of freedom have physical meaning in a quantum gravity theory with fermions. Finally, the dimensional reduction of Papapetrou equations is performed in a 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein background and Dixon-Souriau results for the motion of a charged spinning body are obtained.
Spinning equations of Finslerian gravity, the counterpart of Mathisson-Papapetrou Spinning equations of motion are obtained. Two approaches of Finslerian geometries are illustrated, and their corresponding spinning equations. The significance of nonlinear connection and its relevance on spinning equations and their deviations ones are examined.
We study the effect of baryonic matter and apparent dark matter on black hole shadow in Verlinde's Emergent Gravity. To do so, we consider different baryonic mass profiles and an optically-thin disk region described by a gas in a radial free fall around the black hole. Assuming that most of the baryonic matter in the galaxy is located near the galactic center surrounding a supermassive black hole, we use two models of power law mass profile for the baryonic matter to study the effect of apparent dark matter on the shadow and the corresponding intensity. We find that the effect of the surroundi…
In this comment, I argue that chaotic effects in binary black hole inspiral will not strongly impact the detection of gravitational waves from such systems.
Quantum-gravity effects in black holes are generally expected to be unobservable if they set in at transplanckian curvature scales. Here, we challenge this expectation. A near-critical spin parameter can serve as a lever arm that translates Planckian quantum-gravity effects to a global change in the spacetime: the horizon dissolves and the black hole "lights up". We investigate this transition between a black hole and a horizonless spacetime and find that additional lensing features appear instantaneously, when the quantum-gravity effect is added. In the presence of an accretion disk, a second…
Using a continued fraction ansatz we obtain an analytic approximation for a spherically symmetric black hole solution to Einsteinian Quartic Gravity (EQG), the next simplest Generalized Quasi-Topological Gravity (GQTG) after Einsteinian Cubic Gravity (ECG). This approximate solution is valid everywhere outside of the horizon and we use it to investigate the orbit of massive test bodies near a black hole, specifically computing the innermost stable circular orbit. Using Shapiro time delay we calculate the constraints on the EQG coupling parameter. Finally we compute the shadow of an EQG black h…
We conduct a preliminary investigation into the phenomenological implications of Einsteinian cubic gravity (ECG), a 4-dimensional theory of gravity cubic in curvature of interest for its unique formulation and properties. We find an analytic approximation for a spherically symmetric black hole solution to this theory using a continued fraction ansatz. This approximate solution is valid everywhere outside of the horizon and we use it to study the orbit of massive test bodies near a black hole, specifically computing the innermost stable circular orbit. We compute constraints on the ECG coupling…
Einstein-aether theory is extended by allowing for spinning degrees of freedom of the aether. In addition to the acceleration, shear, expansion, and vorticity of the aether velocity field, a spin rotation describing the dynamics of a classical intrinsic angular momentum of the aether is introduced as a kinematic quantity. The action of Einstein-aether theory is augmented by a term quadratic in the spin rotation and by coupling terms with the vorticity and the acceleration. Besides breaking the Lorentz boost invariance, the theory breaks the invariance under spatial rotations in the direction o…
Recently, a novel $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity was formulated and a spherically symmetric black hole solution in this theory was derived by D. Glavan and C. Lin \cite{Glavan:2019inb}. In this paper, we study the geodesic motions in the background of the spherically symmetric black hole, by focusing on the innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO) for massive particle and photon sphere and shadow. Also, we find that a negative GB coupling constant is allowable in this theory, as in which case the singular behavior of the black hole can be hidden inside the event horizon. Moreover, we …
Noncommutative gravity in three dimensions with vanishing cosmological constant is examined. We find a solution which describes a spacetime in the presence of a torsional source. We estimate the phase shift for each partial wave of a scalar field in the spacetime by the Born approximation.
