We investigate the effect of quantum decoherence and relaxation in neutrino oscillations using MINOS and T2K data. The formalism of open quantum systems is used to describe the interaction of a neutrino system with the environment, where the strength of the interaction is regulated by a decoherence parameter $Γ$. We assume an energy dependence parameterized by $Γ= γ_0 (E/\mbox{GeV})^n$, with $n=-2,0,+2$, and consider three different scenarios, allowing the investigation of the effect of relaxation and of constraining the solar and atmospheric sectors to the same decoherence parameter. The MINOS and T2K data present a complementary behavior, with regard to our theoretical model, resulting in a better sensitivity for $n = +2$ and $n = -2$, respectively. We perform a combined analyses of both experimental data, which also include a reactor constraint on $\sin^2 θ_{13}$, and observe an independence of the results to the scenarios we investigate. As highlight of our analyses we obtain the best limit on $γ_0$ for the energy dependence of $n = -2$, reporting an upper bound of $1.7 \times 10^{-23}$~GeV, at the 90\% confidence level.
In this paper, we show that a Gaussian averaged neutrino oscillation model is equivalent to a neutrino decoherence model. Without loss of generality, the analysis is performed with two neutrino flavors. We also estimate the damping (or decoherence) parameter for atmospheric neutrinos and compare it to earlier obtained results.
In our previous studies (see [1] and references therein) we developed a new theoretical framework that enabled one to consider a new mechanism of neutrino quantum decoherence engendered by the neutrino radiative decay. In parallel, another framework was developed (see [2] and references therein) for the description of the neutrino quantum decoherence due to the non-forward neutrino scattering processes. Both mechanisms are described by the master equations in the Lindblad form. We study the influence of the neutrino quantum decoherence on collective neutrino oscillations. In the present studie…
Neutrino interactions with an external environment can in influence the neutrino oscillation pattern and the oscillations can be damped as a result of the neutrino quantum decoherence. In particular, the quantum decoherence of neutrino states engendered by the neutrino radiative decay accounting for the nonstandard interactions (NSI) leads to the suppression of flavor neutrino oscillations in the solar neutrino fluxes.
The neutrino oscillation patterns can be modified by neutrino interactions with external environments including electromagnetic fields that can influence on neutrinos in the case neutrinos have nonzero electromagnetic properties [1]. The phenomenon of neutrino oscillations can proceed only in the case of the coherent superposition of neutrino mass states. An external environment can modify a neutrino evolution in a way that conditions for the coherent superposition of neutrino mass states are violated. Such a violation is called quantum decoherence of neutrino states and leads to the suppressi…
We re-examine the matter neutrino oscillation probabilities considering the decoherence phenomenon as a sub-leading effect. In this paper we point out the relevance of having the correct interpretation of the decoherence matrix in the different quantum bases, within the framework of neutrino oscillation probabilities in matter. Based on this treatment we develop an analytical formula for matter neutrino oscillation probabilities for three generations, with a range of application up to the decoherence parameter $Γ\sim 10^{-23}$ GeV. We observe that, due to decoherence, the amplitudes of the neu…
In arXiv:2209.00561 our treatment arXiv:2208.03736 of effects of particles emitted together with neutrinos on neutrino wave packets is criticized on several grounds. We show here that this criticism is based on misinterpretation of our results and is invalid. Our conclusions and, in particular, the conclusion that neutrino wave packet separation effects are unobservable in reactor and neutrino source experiments, remain unchanged.
Recently, several studies of neutrino oscillations in the vacuum have not found the decoherence long expected from the separation of wave packets of neutrinos in different mass eigenstates. We show that such decoherence will, on the other hand, be present in a treatment including any mechanism which leads to a dependence of the final state on both the neutrino's emission and absorption time. Our demonstration is in the 3+1d $V-A$ model, however the details of this model lead to an overall factor which does not affect our conclusions. This allows us to consider a simpler model. There we show th…
Quantum gravity may involve models with stochastic fluctuations of the associated metric field, around some fixed background value. Such stochastic models of gravity may induce decoherence for matter propagating in such fluctuating space time. In most cases, this leads to fewer neutrinos of all active flavours being detected in a long baseline experiment as compared to three-flavour standard neutrino oscillations. We discuss the potential of the CNGS and J-PARC beams in constraining models of quantum-gravity induced decoherence using neutrino oscillations as a probe. We use as much as possible…
We analyze many aspects of the phenomenon of the decoherence for neutrinos propagating in long baseline experiments. We show that, in the presence of an off-diagonal term in the dissipative matrix, the Majorana neutrino can violate the CP T symmetry, which, on the contrary, is preserved for Dirac neutrinos. We show that oscillation formulas for Majorana neutrinos depend on the choice of the mixing matrix U. Indeed, different choices of U lead to different oscillation formulas. Moreover, we study the possibility to reveal the differences between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos in the oscillations.…
The phenomena of neutrino oscillations emerges due to coherent superposition of different neutrino states. The entanglement of neutrinos with its environment can lead to a suppression of neutrino oscillations. The master equation for neutrino evolution in a magnetic field is derived taking into account the entanglement with a magnetic field.
Using the open quantum system approach applied to the neutrino system, we derive three generations neutrino probability formulae considering the oscillation induced by mass plus quantum decoherence contributions. The introduction of these dissipative effects is done through the quantum dynamical semigroup formalism. In addition to the theoretical interest of the approach, at least from the completeness point of view, this extension of the formalism to the three flavors, provide us with a direct application: we can analyze qualitatively the consistency of the two generation pure decoherence sol…
We point out three apparent inconsistencies in the treatment of oscillation coherence from reactor neutrino and source neutrino experiments in recent paper "Damping of neutrino oscillations, decoherence and the lengths of neutrino wave packets''. First, that the dependence of the oscillation probability upon the subsequent interactions of entangled recoil particles implies causality violations and in some situations superluminal signaling; second, that integrating over a non-orthogonal basis for the entangled recoil leads to unphysical effects; and third, that the question of what interactions…
In this work we perform global fits of microscopic decoherence models of neutrinos to all available current data, including LSND and KamLAND spectral distortion results. In previous works on related issues the models used were supposed to explain LSND results by means of quantum gravity induced decoherence. However those models were purely phenomenological without any underlying microscopic basis. It is one of the main purposes of this article to use detailed microscopic decoherence models with complete positivity, to fit the data. The decoherence in these models has contributions not only from…
We present an expression for the transition probability between Dirac or Majorana neutrino flavors obtained from first principles within quantum field theory. Our derivation is based on a standard quantum mechanical setup and includes the specific mechanism of neutrino production only in as much as it specifies the initial state. Our expression for the transition probability reproduces the usual formula in the plane wave limit and shows the correct non-relativistic and ultra-relativistic behaviors. It also allows a simple understanding of the decoherence of the oscillations and of the question…
We consider the decoherence effects in the propagation of active neutrinos due to the non-forward neutrino scattering processes in a matter background composed of electrons and nucleons. We calculate the contribution to the imaginary part of the neutrino self-energy arising from such processes. Since the initial neutrino state is depleted but does not actually disappear (the initial neutrino transitions into a neutrino of a different flavor but does not decay) those processes should be associated with decoherence effects that cannot be described in terms of the coherent evolution of the state …
The solar neutrino flux arrives at Earth as an incoherent admixture of mass eigenstates, and then solar neutrino detection constitute a blind probe to the oscillation pattern of the neutrino flavour conversion. Consequently, it is also impossible to probe, in a model independent approach, any new physics that leads to an enhancement of decoherence during the neutrino evolution, an effect that is present for instance in Open Quantum System formalism. However, such mechanism can also induce changes between mass eigenstates if an energy interchange between the neutrino subsystem and the reservoir…
We review the status of nu_mu-->nu_tau flavor transitions of atmospheric neutrinos in the 92 kton-year data sample collected in the first phase of the Super-Kamiokande (SK) experiment, in combination with the recent spectral data from the KEK-to-Kamioka (K2K) accelerator experiment (including 29 single-ring muon events). We consider a theoretical framework which embeds flavor oscillations plus hypothetical decoherence effects, and where both standard oscillations and pure decoherence represent limiting cases. It is found that standard oscillations provide the best description of the SK+K2K dat…
In the framework of quantum open systems we analyze data from KamLAND by using a model that considers neutrino oscillation in a three-family approximation with the inclusion of the decoherence effect. Using a $χ^2$ test we find new limits for the decoherence parameter which we call $γ$, considering the most recent data by KamLAND. Assuming an energy dependence of the type $ γ= γ_0 \left( E/E_0 \right) ^n$, in 95 \% C.L. the limits found are $3.7 \times 10^{-24} GeV$ for $ n=-1$, $6.8 \times 10^{-22} GeV$ for $ n=0$, and $1.5 \times 10^{-19} GeV$ for $ n=1 $ on the energy dependence.
Decoherence has the potential to explain all existing neutrino data including LSND results, without enlarging the neutrino sector. This particular form of CPT violation can preserve the equality of masses and mixing angles between particle and antiparticle sectors, and still provide seizable differences in the oscillation patterns. A simplified minimal model of decoherence is sufficient to explain the existing neutrino data quite neatly, while making dramatic predictions for the upcoming experiments. Some comments on the order of the decoherence parameters in connection with theoretically expe…
Light sterile neutrino oscillations can be partially or completely washed out at short-baseline experiments due to the breaking of neutrino production coherence. In this work we address this issue in sterile searches at $ν$STORM, an experimental proposal for a beam of neutrinos from the decay of stored muons. We work with 3+1 and 3+2 models, the latter introducing CP violation at short-baselines. We find that decoherence effects are only relevant for sterile masses above $Δm^2 \gtrsim 10$ eV$^2$, and that, even in that regime, we are able to place strong appearance bounds in such clean environ…
We study the interplay of the neutrino quantum decoherence and bipolar collective neutrino oscillations. Using the numerical simulation of the neutrino evolution in a supernova environment we showthe suppression of the bipolar collective neutrino oscillations by the quantum decoherence of the neutrino mass states.
We address some theoretical issues of the quantum decoherence phenomenon within the neutrino oscillation framework and carry out various tests under DUNE simulated experimental environment. On the theoretical side, we provide a general expression for an invariant decoherence matrix under a quantum basis rotation. On the simulated experimental side, considering a rotation invariant and a non-invariant decoherence matrix, we study the impact on the fitting of the standard oscillation parameters, the sensitivity in the mass hierarchy and CP violation, combining the neutrino and antineutrino mode …
We propose an explanation for the LSND anomaly based on quantum decoherence, postulating an exponential behavior for the decoherence parameters as a function of the neutrino energy. Within this ansatz decoherence effects are suppressed for neutrino energies above 200 MeV as well as around and below few MeV, restricting deviations from standard three-flavour oscillations only to the LSND energy range of 20--50 MeV. The scenario is consistent with the global data on neutrino oscillations, alleviates the tension between LSND and KARMEN, and predicts a null-result for MiniBooNE. No sterile neutrin…
Quantum decoherence, the evolution of pure states into mixed states, may be a feature of quantum gravity. In this paper, we show how these effects can be modelled for atmospheric neutrinos and illustrate how the standard oscillation picture is modified. We examine how neutrino telescopes, such as ANTARES, are able to place upper bounds on these quantum decoherence effects.
In this work we analyze the effects of quantum decoherence upon the precession of the neutrino polarization vector in a supernovae-like environment. In order to perform the study we have determined the time-dependence of the polarization vector by solving the equation of motion for different neutrino-mixing schemes. The results of the calculations show that the onset of decoherence depends strongly on the parameters of the adopted mixing scheme. As examples we have considered : a) the mixing between active neutrinos and b) the mixing between active end sterile neutrinos.
The simplest explanation for the observed deficit of atmospheric muon neutrinos is that they have oscillated into tau or sterile neutrinos with an oscillation length of the order of the Earth diameter. In order to confirm this hypothesis, all other possible explanations should be ruled out. We propose that a viable alternative hypothesis is that the muon neutrino deficit is caused by flavor sampling events that result in a loss of coherence. The coherence length of the muon neutrinos is expected to be approximately one Earth diameter. We give predictions and experimental tests of this scenario…
A new theoretical framework, based on the quantum field theory of open systems applied to neutrinos, has been developed to describe the neutrino evolution in external environments accounting for the effect of the neutrino quantum decoherence. The developed new approach enables one to obtain the explicit expressions of the decoherence and relaxation parameters that account for a particular process, in which the neutrino participates, and also for the characteristics of an external environment and of the neutrino itself, including the neutrino energy. We have used this approach to consider a new…

The propagation of neutrinos in long baselines experiments may be influenced by dissipation effects. Using Lindblad Master Equation we evolve neutrinos taking into account these dissipative effects. The MSW and the dissipative effects may change the probabilities behavior. In this work, we show and explain how the behavior of the probabilities can change due to the decoherence and relaxation effects acting individually with the MSW effect. A new exotic peak appears in this case and we show the difference between the decoherence and relaxation effects in the appearance of this peak. We also ada…
We consider the prospects for observing the effects of quantum decoherence in high-energy (TeV-PeV) neutrinos from astrophysical sources. In particular, we study Galactic sources of electron anti-neutrinos produced in the decay of ultra-high energy neutrons. We find that next generation neutrino telescopes should be capable of placing limits on quantum decoherence effects over multi-kiloparsec baselines, surpassing current bounds by a factor of $10^{12}$ to $10^{33}$, depending on the model considered.
In this work we analyze quantum decoherence in neutrino oscillations considering the Open Quantum System framework and oscillations through matter for three neutrino families. Taking DUNE as a case study we performed sensitivity analyses for two neutrino flux configurations finding limits for the decoherence parameters. We also offer a physical interpretation for a new peak which arises at the $ν_{e}$ appearance probability with decoherence. The best sensitivity regions found for the decoherence parameters are $Γ_{21}\le 1.2\times10^{-23}\,\text{GeV}$ and $Γ_{32}\le 7.7\times10^{-25}\,\text{Ge…
We propose that gravitational interactions of cosmic neutrinos with the statistically homogeneous and isotropic fluctuations of space-time leads to decoherence. This working hypothesis, which we describe by means of a Lindblad operator, is applied to the system of two- and three-flavour neutrinos undergoing vacuum oscillations and the consequences are investigated. As result of this decoherence we find that the neutrino entropy would increase as a function of initial spectral distortions, mixing angles and CP-violation phase. Subsequently we discuss the chances to discover such an increase obs…

Spatial separation of the wave packets (WPs) of neutrino mass eigenstates leads to decoherence and damping of neutrino oscillations. Damping can also be caused by finite energy resolution of neutrino detectors or, in the case of experiments with radioactive neutrino sources, by finite width of the emitted neutrino line. We study in detail these two types of damping effects using reactor neutrino experiments and experiments with radioactive $^{51}$Cr source as examples. We demonstrate that the effects of decoherence by WP separation can always be incorporated into a modification of the energy r…
We establish the most stringent experimental constraints coming from recent terrestrial neutrino experiments on quantum mechanical decoherence effects in neutrino systems. Taking a completely phenomenological approach, we probe vacuum oscillations plus quantum decoherence between two neutrino species in the channels $ν_μ\to ν_τ$, $ν_μ\to ν_e$ and $ν_e \to ν_τ$, admitting that the quantum decoherence parameter $γ$ is related to the neutrino energy $E_ν$ as : $γ=γ_0 (E_ν/\text{GeV})^{n}$, with $n=-1,0,1$ and 2. Our bounds are valid for a neutrino mass squared difference compatible with the atmos…
We propose the new mechanism of neutrino flavour relaxation to explain the experimentally observed changes of initial neutrino flavour fluxes. The test of neutrino relaxation hypothesis is presented, using the data of modern reactor, solar and accelerator experiments. The final choice between the standard neutrino oscillations and the proposed neutrino flavour relaxation model can be done in future experiments.
In the dense-neutrino region at 50-400 km above the neutrino sphere in a supernova, neutrino-neutrino interactions cause large flavor transformations. We study when the multi-angle nature of the neutrino trajectories leads to flavor decoherence between different angular modes. We consider a two-flavor mixing scenario between nu_e and another flavor nu_x and assume the usual hierarchy F(nu_e)>F{antinu_e)>F(nu_x)=F(antinu_x) for the number fluxes. We define epsilon=(F(nu_e)-F(antinu_e))/(F(antinu_e)-F(antinu_x)) as a measure for the deleptonization flux which is the one crucial parameter. The tr…
Environmental decoherence of oscillating neutrinos of strength $Γ= (2.3 \pm 1.1) \times 10^{-23}$ GeV can explain how maximal $θ_{23}$ mixing observed at 295 km by T2K appears to be non-maximal at longer baselines. As shown recently by R. Oliveira, the MSW matter effect for neutrinos is altered by decoherence: In normal (inverted) mass hierarchy, a resonant enhancement of $ν_μ (\barν_μ) \rightarrow ν_{e} (\barν_{e})$ occurs for $6 < E_ν < 20$ GeV. Thus decoherence at the rated strength may be detectable as an excess of charged-current $ν_{e}$ events in the full $ν_μ$ exposures of MINOS+ and OP…
Dense neutrino gases exhibit collective oscillations where "self-maintained coherence" is a characteristic feature, i.e., neutrinos of different energies oscillate with the same frequency. In a non-isotropic gas, however, the flux term of the neutrino-neutrino interaction has the opposite effect of causing kinematical decoherence of neutrinos propagating in different directions, an effect that is at the origin of the "multi-angle behavior" of neutrinos streaming off a supernova core. We cast the equations of motion in a form where the role of the flux term is manifest. We study in detail the s…
The finite size of a neutrino wavepacket at creation can affect its oscillation probability. Here, we consider the electron antineutrino wavepacket and decoherence in the context of the nuclear reactor based experiment JUNO. Given JUNO's high expected statistics [$\sim$100k IBD events ($\barν_e p \rightarrow e^+ n$)], long baseline ($\sim$53\,km), and excellent energy resolution [$\sim$$0.03/\sqrt{E_{\mathrm{vis}}~\mathrm{(MeV)}}$], its sensitivity to the size of the wavepacket is expected to be quite strong. Unfortunately, this sensitivity may weaken the experiment's ability to measure the or…
We derive the neutrino flavor transition probabilities with the neutrino treated as a wave packet. The decoherence and dispersion effects from the wave-packet treatment show up as damping and phase-shifting of the plane-wave neutrino oscillation patterns. If the energy uncertainty in the initial neutrino wave packet is larger than around 0.01 of the neutrino energy, the decoherence and dispersion effects would degrade the sensitivity of reactor neutrino experiments to mass hierarchy measurement to lower than 3 $σ$ confidence level.
We explore how well reactor antineutrino experiments can constrain or measure the loss of quantum coherence in neutrino oscillations. We assume that decoherence effects are encoded in the size of the neutrino wave-packet, $σ$. We find that the current experiments Daya Bay and the Reactor Experiment for Neutrino Oscillation (RENO) already constrain $σ>1.0\times 10^{-4}$ nm and estimate that future data from the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) would be sensitive to $σ<2.1\times 10^{-3}$ nm. If the effects of loss of coherence are within the sensitivity of JUNO, we expect $σ$ to …
We explore the impact of strong gravitational fields on neutrino decoherence. To this aim, we employ the density matrix formalism to describe the propagation of neutrino wave packets in curved spacetime. By considering Gaussian wave packets, we determine the coherence proper time, neglecting the effect of matter outside the compact object. We show that strong gravitational fields nearby compact objects significantly influence neutrino coherence.
In dense neutrino backgrounds present in supernovae and in the early Universe, neutrino oscillations may exhibit complex collective phenomena, such as synchronized oscillations, bipolar oscillations and spectral splits and swaps. In this Letter we consider for the first time the effects of decoherence by wave packet separation on these phenomena. We derive the evolution equations that govern neutrino oscillations in a dense medium in the presence of decoherence and consider the evolution of several simple neutrino systems in detail. We show that decoherence may modify the oscillation pattern s…
We study decoherence effects on mixing among three generations of neutrinos. We show that in presence of a non--diagonal dissipation matrix, both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos can violate the $CPT$ symmetry and the oscillation formulae depend on the parametrization of the mixing matrix. We reveal the $CP$ violation in the transitions preserving the flavor, for a certain form of the dissipator. In particular, the $CP$ violation affects all the transitions in the case of Majorana neutrinos, unlike Dirac neutrinos which still preserve the $CP$ symmetry in one of the transitions flavor preserving. …
We study the interplay between coherence and mixedness in meson and neutrino systems. The dynamics of the meson system is treated using the open quantum system approach taking into account the decaying nature of the system. Neutrino dynamics is studied in the context of three flavor oscillations within the framework of a decoherence model recently used in the context of LSND (Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector) experiment. For meson systems, the decoherence effect is negligible in the limit of zero CP violation. Interestingly, the average mixedness increases with time for about one lifetime…
We consider the decoherence effects in the propagation of neutrinos in a background composed of a scalar particle and a fermion due to the non-forward neutrino scattering processes. Using a simple model for the coupling of the form $\bar f_Rν_Lϕ$ we calculate the contribution to the imaginary part of the neutrino self-energy arising from the non-forward neutrino scattering processes in such backgrounds, from which the damping terms are determined. In the case we are considering, in which the initial neutrino state is depleted but does not actually disappear (the initial neutrino transitions in…
Recent work has proposed that the interaction between ordinary matter and a stochastic gravitational background can lead to the decoherence of large aggregates of ordinary matter. In this work we point out that these arguments can be carried over to a stochastic neutrino background but with the Planck scale of the gravitational decoherence replaced by the weak scale. This implies that it might be possible to observe such neutrino induced decoherence on a small, microscopic system rather than a macroscopic system as is the case for gravitationally induced decoherence. In particular we suggest t…
