We use the state-of-the-art high-resolution cosmological simulations by IllustrisTNG to derive the velocity distribution and local density of dark matter in galaxies like our Milky Way and find a substantial spread in both quantities. Next we use our findings to examine the sensitivity to the dark matter velocity profile of underground searches using electron scattering in germanium and silicon targets. We find that sub-GeV dark matter search is strongly affected by these uncertainties, unlike nuclear recoil searches for heavier dark matter, especially in multiple electron-hole modes, for which the sensitivity to the scattering cross-section is also weaker. Therefore, by improving the sensitivity to lower ionization thresholds not only projected sensitivities will be boosted but also the dependence on the astrophysical uncertainties will become significantly reduced.
Uncertainties in the NLO calculation of the inclusive jet cross section due to the choice of renormalization scale, parton distribution functions and clustering algorithm are explored. These are found to be similar in size to the current experimental uncertainties of the measured inclusive jet cross section at DZero and CDF.
The dark matter direct detection rates are highly correlated with the phase space distribution of dark matter particles in our galactic neighbourhood. In this paper, we make a systematic study of the impact of astrophysical uncertainties on electron recoil events at the direct detection experiments with Xenon and semiconductor detectors. We find that within the standard halo model there can be up to $ \sim 50\%$ deviation from the fiducial choice in the exclusion bounds from these observational uncertainties. For non-standard halo models, we report a similar deviation from the fiducial standar…
We study the effect of theoretical and parametric uncertainties on the ability of future Higgs coupling measurements at the International Linear Collider (ILC) to reveal deviations from the Standard Model (SM). To quantify the impact of these uncertainties we plot Delta chi^2 = 25 contours for the deviations between the SM Higgs couplings and the light Higgs couplings in the mh-max benchmark scenario of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We consider the theoretical uncertainties in the SM Higgs decay partial widths and production cross section and the parametric uncertainties in…
Although commonly assumed to be spherical, dark matter halos are predicted to be non-spherical by N-body simulations and their asphericity has a potential impact on the systematic uncertainties in dark matter searches. The evaluation of these uncertainties is the main aim of this work, where we study the impact of aspherical dark matter density distributions in Milky-Way-like halos on direct and indirect searches. Using data from the large N-body cosmological simulation Bolshoi, we perform a statistical analysis and quantify the systematic uncertainties on the determination of local dark matte…
We consider the pion-photon transition form factor at low to intermediate spacelike momenta within the theoretical framework of light-cone sum rules. We derive predictions which take into account all currently known contributions stemming from QCD perturbation theory up to the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) and by including all twist terms up to order six. In order to enable a more detailed comparison with forthcoming high-precision data, we also estimate the main systematic theoretical uncertainties, stemming from various sources, and discuss their influence on the calculations --- in p…
Indirect detection signals from dark matter annihilation are studied in the positron channel. We discuss in detail the positron propagation inside the galactic medium: we present novel solutions of the diffusion and propagation equations and we focus on the determination of the astrophysical uncertainties which affect the positron dark matter signal. We find dark matter scenarios and propagation models that nicely fit existing data on the positron fraction. Finally, we present predictions both on the positron fraction and on the flux for already running or planned space experiments, concluding…
We show that, especially in the low energy tail of the positron spectra at Earth, the uncertainty is sizeable and we quantify the effect. Comparison of our predictions with current available and foreseen experimental data are derived.
It was recently reported that there may exist monochromatic $γ$-ray emission at $\sim 130$ GeV from the Galactic center in the Fermi Large Area Telescope data, which might be related with dark matter (DM) annihilation. In this work we carry out a comprehensive check of consistency of the results with the DM annihilation scenario, using the 3.7 yrs Fermi observation of the inner Galaxy, Galactic halo, clusters of galaxies and dwarf galaxies. The results found are as follows. 1) Very strong constraints on the DM annihilation into continuous $γ$-rays from the Galactic center are set, which are as…
Recent theoretical and experimental improvements in the determination of charm and bottom quark masses are discussed. A new and improved evaluation of the contribution from the gluon condensate $< \frac{α_s}π G^2>$ to the charm mass determination and a detailed study of potential uncertainties in the continuum cross section for $b\bar b$ production is presented, together with a study of the parametric uncertainty from the $α_s$-dependence of our results. The final results, $m_c(3 \text{GeV})=986(13) $MeV and $m_b(m_b)=4163(16) $MeV, represent, together with a closely related lattice determinat…
The diffused gamma halo around our Galaxy recently discovered by EGRET could be produced by annihilations of relic neutrinos N (of fourth generation), whose mass is within a narrow range (Mz /2 < M < Mz). Neutrino annihilations in the halo may lead to either ultrarelativistic electron pairs whose inverse Compton Scattering on infrared or optical galactic photons could be the source of the observed GeV gamma rays, or to prompt 100 MeV- 1 GeV photons (due to neutral pion secondaries) born by N - anti N --> Z--> quark pairs reactions. The consequent gamma flux (10 ^(-7)- 10^(-6) cm ^(-2) s^(-1) s…
The Kaplan-Manohar ambiguity in light quark masses allows for a larger uncertainty in the ratio of up to down quark masses than naive estimates from the chiral Lagrangian would indicate. We show that it allows for a relaxation of experimental bounds on the QCD axion, specifically KSVZ axions in the $2-3 μ$eV mass range composing 100% of the galactic dark matter halo can evade the experimental limits placed by the ADMX collaboration.
Using results on soft-collinear factorization for inclusive B-meson decay distributions, a systematic study of the partial B->Xs+gamma decay rate with a cut E_gamma<E_0 on photon energy is performed. For values E_0<1.9 GeV the rate can be calculated without reference to shape functions. The result depends on three large scales: m_b, \sqrt{m_b Delta}, and Delta=m_b-2E_0. The sensitivity to the scale Delta=1.1 GeV (for E_0=1.8 GeV) introduces significant uncertainties, which have been ignored in the past. Our new prediction for the B->Xs+gamma branching ratio with E_gamma<1.8 GeV is Br(B->Xs+gam…
The original annual-modulation region, singled out by the DAMA/NaI experiment for direct detection of WIMPs, is extended by taking into account the uncertainties in the galactic astrophysical velocities. Also the effect due to a possible bulk rotation for the dark matter halo is considered. We find that the range for the WIMP mass becomes 30 GeV < m_chi < 130 GeV at 1-sigma C.L. with a further extension in the upper bound, when a possible bulk rotation of the dark matter halo is taken into account. We show that the DAMA results, when interpreted in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric e…
An evaluation of the principal uncertainties in the computation of neutrino fluxes produced in cosmic ray showers in the atmosphere is presented. The neutrino flux predictions are needed for comparison with experiment to perform neutrino oscillation studies. The paper concentrates on the main limitations which are due to hadron production uncertainties. It also treats primary cosmic ray flux uncertainties, which are at a lower level. The absolute neutrino fluxes are found to have errors of around 15% in the neutrino energy region important for contained events underground. Large cancellations …
A halo model with heavy relic neutrinos N belonging to a fourth generation and their annihilations in galactic halo may explain the recent evidence of diffused gamma (GeV) radiation around galactic plane. We considered a neutrino mass in the narrow range ($M_Z/2 < m_N < M_Z$) and two main processes as source of gamma rays. A first one is ICS of ultrarelativistic electron pair on IR and optical galactic photons and a second due to prompt gammas by $π^0$ decay, leading to a gamma flux ($10^{-7} - 10^{-6} /(cm^2 s sr)$) comparable to EGRET detection. Our predictions are also compatible with the n…
The differential event rate in Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) direct detection experiments depends on the local dark matter density and velocity distribution. Accurate modelling of the local dark matter distribution is therefore required to obtain reliable constraints on the WIMP particle physics properties. Data analyses typically use a simple Standard Halo Model which might not be a good approximation to the real Milky Way (MW) halo. We review observational determinations of the local dark matter density, circular speed and escape speed and also studies of the local dark matter d…
Proton-philic spin-dependent inelastic Dark Matter is a Weakly Inelastic Massive Particle scenario that can explain the DAMA yearly modulation effect in compliance with the constraints from other direct detection Dark Matter searches. We obtain updated ranges for its parameters both in a halo-independent approach and adopting a truncated Maxwellian for the WIMP velocity distribution constructing approximate frequentist confidence intervals from an effective chi-square including, among others, the latest experimental constraints from XENON1T, PANDAX-II, SuperCDMS and CDMSlite. In the halo-indep…
A detailed compilation of uncertainties in the MSbar bottom quark mass m_b(m_b) obtained from low-n spectral sum rules at order alpha_s^2 is given including charm mass effects and secondary b production. The experimental continuum region above 11.1 GeV is treated conservatively. An inconsistency of the PDG averages for the electronic partial widths of Upsilon(4S) and Upsilon(5S) is pointed out. From our analysis we obtain m_b(m_b)=4.20\pm 0.09 GeV. The impact of future CLEO data is discussed.
Using results on soft-collinear factorization for inclusive B-meson decay distributions, a systematic study of the partial $B\to X_sγ$ decay rate with a cut $E_γ> E_0$ on photon energy is performed. For values of $E_0$ below about 1.9 GeV, the rate can be calculated without reference to shape functions using a multi-scale operator product expansion (MSOPE). The transition from the shape-function region to the MSOPE region is studied analytically. The resulting prediction for the $B\to X_sγ$ branching ratio depends on three large scales: $m_b$, $\sqrt{m_bΔ}$, and $Δ=m_b-2E_0$. Logarithms associ…
The amplitudes for $2\rightarrow 2$ scattering processes involving longitudinally polarized gauge bosons $( W_L^\pm, Z_L )$ and the Higgs boson are analyzed up to two loops. Assuming $M_H >> M_W$, the trilinear Higgs coupling, $λv$, is dominant for energies of $\sqrt{s}$ < 1.5 -- 2 $M_H$. For larger values of $\sqrt{s}$, the quartic coupling, $λ$, becomes dominant, allowing for a simpler calculation of higher-order corrections. The high-energy amplitudes display a large logarithmic dependence on $\sqrt{s}$ which can be resummed using renormalization group techniques. The resummation of leading…
Direct detection experiments have set increasingly stringent limits on the cross section for spin-independent dark matter-nucleon interactions. In obtaining such limits, experiments primarily assume the standard halo model (SHM) as the distribution of dark matter in our Milky Way. Three astrophysical parameters are required to define the SHM: the local dark matter escape velocity, the local dark matter density and the circular velocity of the sun around the center of the galaxy. This paper studies the effect of the uncertainties in these three astrophysical parameters on the XENON1T exclusion …
The interpretation of dark matter direct detection experiments is complicated by the fact that neither the astrophysical distribution of dark matter nor the properties of its particle physics interactions with nuclei are known in detail. To address both of these issues in a very general way we develop a new framework that combines the full formalism of non-relativistic effective interactions with state-of-the-art halo-independent methods. This approach makes it possible to analyse direct detection experiments for arbitrary dark matter interactions and quantify the goodness-of-fit independent o…
We analyze publicly available Fermi-LAT high-energy gamma-ray data and confirm the existence of clear spectral feature peaked at E=130GeV. Scanning over the Galaxy we identify several disconnected regions where the observed excess originates from. Our best optimized fit is obtained for the central region of Galaxy with a clear peak at 130GeV with local statistical significance 4.5 sigma. The observed excess is not correlated with Fermi bubbles. We compute the photon spectra induced by dark matter annihilations into two and four standard model particles, the latter via two light intermediate st…
Sub-GeV halo dark matter that enters the Sun can potentially scatter off hot solar nuclei and be ejected much faster than its incoming velocity. We derive an expression for the rate and velocity distribution of these reflected particles taking into account the Sun's temperature and opacity. We further demonstrate that future direct detection experiments could use these energetic reflected particles to probe light dark matter in parameter space that cannot be accessed via ordinary halo dark matter.
Recently a series of indications have been put forward suggesting the presence of two gamma-ray lines at 110-130 GeV (centered at 111 and 129 GeV). Signals of these lines have been observed toward the Galactic center, at some galaxy clusters and among some of the unassociated point sources of the 2 years Fermi catalogue. Such a combination of signals could be generated by dark matter annihilations in the main dark matter halo, its substructures and nearby galaxy clusters. We discuss in this work the consistency between the number of events observed at the line energies in the sky and the predi…
We discuss the implications of the more than 50 microlensing events seen by the EROS, MACHO, and OGLE collaborations for the composition of the halo of our galaxy. The event rates indicate that the halo mass fraction in MACHO's is less than 30\%, consistent with expectations for a universe whose primary component is cold dark matter. We caution that the uncertainties are such that a larger MACHO fraction cannot yet be excluded.
Antimatter cosmic-rays are used to probe new phenomena in physics, including dark matter annihilation. We use the cosmic-ray positron fraction spectrum by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, to search for such an annihilation signal in the Galaxy. We focus on dark matter with mass between 5 and 120 GeV, producing high-energy electrons and positrons. In these cosmic-ray energies the interplay of multiple astrophysical sources and phenomena, makes this search highly sensitive to the underlying astrophysical background assumptions. We use a vast public library of astrophysical models for the cosmic-…
The theoretical interpretation of dark matter direct detection experiments is hindered by uncertainties of the microphysics governing the dark matter-nucleon interaction, and of the dark matter density and velocity distribution inside the Solar System. These uncertainties are especially relevant when confronting a detection claim to the null results from other experiments, since seemingly conflicting experimental results may be reconciled when relaxing the assumptions about the form of the interaction and/or the velocity distribution. We present in this paper a halo-independent method to calcu…
The bottom quark pole mass $M_b$ is determined using a sum rule which relates the masses and the electronic decay widths of the $Υ$ mesons to large $n$ moments of the vacuum polarization function calculated from nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics. The complete set of next-to-next-to-leading order (i.e. ${\cal{O}}(α_s^2, α_s v, v^2)$ where $v$ is the bottom quark c.m. velocity) corrections is calculated and leads to a considerable reduction of theoretical uncertainties compared to a pure next-to-leading order analysis. However, the theoretical uncertainties remain much larger than the exper…
The effects of astrophysical uncertainties on the exclusion limits at dark matter direct detection experiments are investigated for three scenarios: elastic, momentum dependent and inelastically scattering dark matter. We find that varying the dark matter galactic escape velocity and the Sun's circular velocity can lead to significant variations in the exclusion limits for light ($\lesssim10$ GeV) elastic and inelastic scattering dark matter. We also calculate the limits using one hundred velocity distributions extracted from the Via Lactea II and GHALO N-body simulations and find that a Maxwe…
The Galactic gamma-ray diffuse emission is currently observed in the GeV-TeV energy range with unprecedented accuracy by the Fermi satellite. Understanding this component is crucial as it provides a background to many different signals such as extragalactic sources or annihilating dark matter. It is timely to reinvestigate how it is calculated and to assess the various uncertainties which are likely to affect the accuracy of the predictions. The Galactic gamma-ray diffuse emission is mostly produced above a few GeV by the interactions of cosmic ray primaries impinging on the interstellar mater…
We incorporate Milky Way dark matter halo profile uncertainties, as well as an accounting of diffuse gamma-ray emission uncertainties in dark matter annihilation models for the Galactic Center Extended gamma-ray excess (GCE) detected by the Fermi Gamma Ray Space Telescope. The range of particle annihilation rate and masses expand when including these unknowns. However, two of the most precise empirical determinations of the Milky Way halo's local density and density profile leave the signal region to be in considerable tension with dark matter annihilation searches from combined dwarf galaxy a…
The Milky Way halo is the brightest source of dark matter annihilation on the sky. Indeed, the potential strength of the Galactic dark matter signal can supersede that expected from dwarf galaxies and galaxy groups even in regions away from the Inner Galaxy. In this paper, we present the results of a search for dark matter annihilation in the smooth Milky Way halo for $|b| > 20^\circ$ and $r < 50^\circ$ using 413 weeks of Fermi Pass 8 data within the energy range of $\sim$0.8-50 GeV. We exclude thermal dark matter with mass below $\sim$70 GeV that annihilates to $b\bar{b}$ at the 95% confidenc…
We investigate the impact of uncertainty in the velocity distribution of dark matter on direct detection experiments. We construct an multinomial prior with a hyperparameter $β$ that describes the strength of our belief in an isotropic Maxwell-Boltzmann velocity distribution. By varying $β$, we interpolate between a halo-independent and halo-dependent analysis. We present a novel approximation for the marginalisation of this prior that is applicable to any counting experiment. With this formula, we investigate the impact of the uncertainty in limits from XENON1T. For dark matter masses greater…
Direct detection of Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) candidates of Dark Matter (DM) is studied within the context of a self-consistent truncated isothermal model of the finite-size dark halo of the Galaxy based on the "King model" of the phase space distribution function of collisionless DM particles. Our halo model takes into account the modifications of the phase-space structure of the halo due to the gravitational influence of the observed visible matter in a self-consistent manner. The parameters of the halo model are determined by a fit to a recently determined circular rotation…
Despite mounting evidence that dark matter (DM) exists in the Universe, its fundamental nature remains unknown. We present sensitivity estimates to detect DM particles with a future very-high-energy ($\gtrsim$ TeV) wide field-of-view gamma-ray observatory in the Southern Hemisphere. This observatory would search for gamma rays from the annihilation or decay of DM particles in the Galactic halo. With a wide field of view, both the Galactic Center and a large fraction of the Galactic halo will be detectable with unprecedented sensitivity to DM in the mass range of $\sim$500 GeV to $\sim$2 PeV. T…
If dark matter neutral LSPs in the galactic halo decay into two body final states containing photons or neutrinos they could be detected even if the decay rates are very small, 10**{-32} per sec. I calculate mass and lifetime bounds from current astrophysical data on monochromatic photons and neutrinos and suggest that the poorly explored region between 10 GeV and 1 TeV be explored for signs of supersymmetry from space.
We derive the mass model of the Milky Way (MW) using a cored dark matter (DM) halo profile and recent data. The method used consists in fitting a spherically symmetric model of the Galaxy with a Burkert DM halo profile to available data: MW terminal velocities in the region inside the solar circle, circular velocity as recently estimated from maser star forming regions at intermediate radii, and velocity dispersions of stellar halo tracers for the outermost Galactic region. The latter are reproduced by integrating the Jeans equation for every modeled mass distribution, and by allowing for diff…
Ultralight-axion (ULA) dark matter is one of the possible solutions to resolve small-scale problems, especially the core-cusp problem. This is because ULA dark matter can create a central soliton core in all dark matter haloes stemmed from the quantum pressure against gravity below the de Broglie wavelength, which becomes manifest on astrophysical scales with axion mass range $\sim10^{-22}$ eV. In this work, we apply our non-spherical dynamical models to the kinematic data of eight classical dwarf spheroidals (dSphs) to obtain more reliable and realistic limits on ULA particle mass. This is mo…
We present a new method for determining Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) properties in future tonne scale direct detection experiments which accounts for uncertainties in the Milky Way (MW) smooth dark matter distribution. Using synthetic data on the kinematics of MW halo stars matching present samples from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, complemented by local escape velocity constraints, we demonstrate that the local dark matter density can be constrained to approximately 20% accuracy. For low mass WIMPs, we find that a factor of two error in the assumed local dark matter density lead…
Direct detection experiments are poised to detect dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). The signals expected in these experiments depend on the ultra-local WIMP density and velocity distribution. Firstly we review methods for modelling the dark matter distribution. We then discuss observational determinations of the local dark matter density, circular speed and escape speed and the results of numerical simulations of Milky Way-like dark matter halos. In each case we highlight the uncertainties and assumptions made. We then overview the resulting uncertainties…
The CACTUS experiment recently observed a gamma ray excess above 50 GeV from the direction of the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Considering that Draco is dark matter dominated the gamma rays may be generated through dark matter annihilation in the Draco halo. In the framework of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model we explore the parameter space to account for the gamma ray signals at CACTUS. We find that the neutralino mass is constrained to be approximately in the range between 100 GeV ~ 400 GeV and a sharp central cuspy of the dark halo profile in Draco is necessary t…
We present the results of our analysis of cosmic-ray electrons using about 8 million electron candidates detected in the first 12 months on-orbit by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. This work extends our previously-published cosmic-ray electron spectrum down to 7 GeV, giving a spectral range of approximately 2.5 decades up to 1 TeV. We describe in detail the analysis and its validation using beam-test and on-orbit data. In addition, we describe the spectrum measured via a subset of events selected for the best energy resolution as a cross-check on the measurement using the full event sample. Ou…
Sub-GeV mass dark matter particles whose collisions with nuclei would not deposit sufficient energy to be detected, could instead be revealed through their interaction with electrons. Analyses of data from direct detection experiments usually require assuming a local dark matter halo velocity distribution. In the halo-independent analysis method, properties of this distribution are instead inferred from direct dark matter detection data, which allows then to compare different data without making any assumption on the uncertain local dark halo. This method has so far been developed for and appl…
The effects of a possible rotation of the galactic dark halo on the calculation of the direct detection rates for particle dark matter are analyzed, with special attention to the extraction of the upper limits on the WIMP--nucleon scalar cross section from the experimental data. We employ a model of dark halo rotation which describes the maximal possible effects. For WIMP masses above 50 GeV, the upper limit exclusion plot is modified by less than a factor of two when rotation is included. For lighter masses the effect can be stronger, suggesting the necessity to develop specific models of hal…
Conventional Cold Dark Matter cosmological models predict small scale structures, such as cuspy halos, which are in apparent conflict with observations. Several alternative scenarios based on modifying fundamental properties of the dark matter have been proposed. We show that general principles of quantum mechanics, in particular unitarity, imply interesting constraints on two proposals: collisional dark matter proposed by Spergel & Steinhardt, and strongly annihilating dark matter proposed by Kaplinghat, Knox & Turner. Efficient scattering required in both implies m < 12 GeV and m < 25 GeV re…
This note presents an analysis of the potential of future high-energy electron-positron colliders to measure the $b$-quark mass. We perform a full-simulation study of the measurement of the ratio of the three-jet rates in events with $b\bar{b}(g)$ and $q\bar{q}(g)$ production, $R_{3}^{bl}$, and assess the dominant uncertainties, including theory and experimental systematic uncertainties. We find that the ILC "Higgs factory" stage, with an integrated luminosity of 2 ab$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=$ 250 GeV can measure the $b-$quark $bar{MS}$ mass at a scale of 250 GeV ($m_b(250~$GeV$)$) with a precisio…
We study the impact of the assumed velocity distribution of galactic dark matter particles on the interpretation of results from nuclear recoil detectors. By converting experimental data to variables that make the astrophysical unknowns explicit, different experiments can be compared without implicit assumptions concerning the dark matter halo. We extend this framework to include the annual modulation signal, as well as multiple target elements. Recent results from DAMA, CoGeNT and CRESST-II can be brought into agreement if the velocity distribution is very anisotropic and thus allows a large …
Indirect detection of dark matter via its annihilation products is a key technique in the search for dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). Strong constraints exist on the annihilation of WIMPs to highly visible Standard Model final states such as photons or charged particles. In the case of s-wave annihilation, this typically eliminates thermal relic cross sections for dark matter of mass below $\cal{O}$(10) GeV. However, such limits typically neglect the possibility that dark matter may annihilate to assumed invisible or hard-to-detect final states, such as …
We present a novel study on the problem of constructing mass models for the Milky Way, concentrating on features regarding the dark matter halo component. We have considered a variegated sample of dynamical observables for the Galaxy, including several results which have appeared recently, and studied a 7- or 8-dimensional parameter space - defining the Galaxy model - by implementing a Bayesian approach to the parameter estimation based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. The main result of this analysis is a novel determination of the local dark matter halo density which, assuming spherical…
