Parity-violating and time-reversal conserving (PVTC) and parity-violating and time-reversal-violating (PVTV) forces in nuclei form only a tiny component of the total interaction between nucleons. The study of these tiny forces can nevertheless be of extreme interest because they allow to obtain information on fundamental symmetries using nuclear systems. The PVTC interaction derives from the weak interaction between the quarks inside nucleons and nuclei and the study of PVTC effects opens a window on the quark-quark weak interaction. The PVTV interaction is sensitive to more exotic interactions at the fundamental level, in particular to strong CP violation in the Standard Model Lagrangian, or even to exotic phenomena predicted in various beyond-the-Standard-Model scenarios. The presence of these interactions can be revealed either by studying various asymmetries in polarized scattering of nuclear systems, or by measuring the presence of non-vanishing permanent electric dipole moments of nucleons, nuclei and diamagnetic atoms and molecules. In this contribution, we review the derivation of the nuclear PVTC and PVTV interactions within various frameworks. We focus in particular on the application of chiral effective field theory, which allows for a more strict connection with the fundamental interactions at the quark level. We investigate PVTC and PVTV effects induced by these potential on several few-nucleon observables, such as the longitudinal asymmetry in proton-proton scattering and radiative neutron-proton capture, and the electric dipole momentsof the deuteron and the trinucleon system.
We apply the large-$N_c$ expansion to the time-reversal-invariance-violating (TV) nucleon-nucleon potential. The operator structures contributing to next-to-next-to-leading order in the large-$N_c$ counting are constructed. For the TV and parity-violating case we find a single operator structure at leading order. The TV but parity-conserving potential contains two leading-order terms, which however are suppressed by 1/$N_c$ compared to the parity-violating potential. Comparison with phenomenological potentials, including the chiral EFT potential in the TV parity-violating case, leads to large-…
We consider parity-violating observables from the processes $\vec n p\to d γ$ and $ np \to d \overset {\circlearrowleft}γ$. We perform calculations using pionless effective field theory both with and without explicit dibaryon fields. After combining these results with ones we have already obtained on parity-violating asymmetries in $\vec NN$ scattering, experimental input would in principle allow the extraction of all five parameters occurring at leading order in the parity-violating Lagrangian.
The effects of charge symmetry breaking in nucleon electromagnetic form factors on parity- violating elastic electron-12C scattering is studied, and found to be much smaller than other known effects. The analysis of a planned experiment is discussed.
The spin structure of parity violating and time reversal invariance violating effects in neutron scattering is discussed. The explicit relations between these effects are presented in terms of functions nuclear spins and neutron partial widths of p-wave resonances.
We review the area of strange quark contributions to nucleon structure. In particular, we focus on current models of strange quark vector currents in the nucleon and the associated parity-violating elastic electron scattering experiments from which vector- and axial-vector currents are extracted
We present a comprehensive analysis of gamma-Z interference corrections to the weak charge of the proton measured in parity-violating electron scattering, including a survey of existing models and a critical analysis of their uncertainties. Constraints from parton distributions in the deep-inelastic region, together with new data on parity-violating electron scattering in the resonance region, result in significantly smaller uncertainties on the corrections compared to previous estimates. At the kinematics of the Qweak experiment, we determine the gamma-Z box correction to be ReBox^V_{gamma-Z}…
Parity violating elastic electron-nucleus scattering provides an accurate and model independent measurement of neutron densities, because the $Z^0$ couples primarily to neutrons. Coulomb distortion corrections to the parity violating asymmetry $A_l$ are calculated exactly using a relativistic optical model. Distortions significantly reduce $A_l$ in a heavy nucleus. However even with distortions, an experiment to measure the neutron radius is feasible. This will aid the interpretation of future atomic parity violation measurements and provide fundamental nuclear structure information. Coulomb d…
Time reversal invariance violating parity conserving (TVPC) effects are calculated for elastic proton deuteron scattering with proton energies up to $2~$MeV. Distorted Wave Born Approximation is employed to estimate TVPC matrix elements, based on hadronic wave functions, obtained by solving three-body Faddeev-Merkuriev equations in configuration space with realistic potentials.
Nuclear physics tests of parity- and time-reversal invariance have both shaped the development of the Standard Model and provided key tests of its predictions. These studies now provide vital input in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. We give a brief review of a few key experimental and theoretical developments in the history of this sub-field of nuclear physics as well as a short outlook, focusing on weak decays, parity-violation in electron scattering, and searches for permanent electric dipole moments of the neutron and neutral atoms.
We investigate the parity-violating $πNN$ Yukawa coupling constant $h^1_{πNN}$ within the framework of the SU(2) chiral quark-soliton model, based on the $ΔS=0$ effective weak Lagrangian derived within the same framework. We find that the parity-violating $πNN$ coupling constant is about $1\times10^{-8}$ at the scale of 1 GeV. The results of $h_{πNN}^1$ turn out to be sensitive to the Wilson coefficient. We discuss how the gluonic renormalization supresses the parity-violating $πNN$ coupling constant.
Nuclear parity violation is studied with polarized neutrons in the photodisintegration of the deuteron at low energies. A pionless effective field theory with di-baryon fields is used for the investigation. Hadronic weak interactions are treated by parity-violating di-baryon-nucleon-nucleon vertices, which have undetermined coupling contants. A parity-violating asymmetry in the process is calculated for the incident photon energy up to 30 MeV. If experimental data for the parity-violating asymmetry become available in the future, we will be able to determine the unknown coupling contants in th…
I present the calculation of parity- and time-reversal-violating moments of the nucleon and light nuclei, originating from the QCD theta term and effective dimension-six operators. By applying chiral effective field theory these calculations are performed in a unified framework. I argue that measurements of a few light-nuclear electric dipole moments would shed light on the mechanism of parity and time-reversal violation.
We show that the present experimental limits on electron-nucleon interactions that violate both parity and time reversal invariance provide new stringent bounds on the imaginary parts of some of the products of the R-parity violating coupling constants in the R-parity violating Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.
Time reversal invariance violating parity conserving effects for low energy elastic neutron deuteron scattering are calculated for meson exchange and EFT-type of potentials in a Distorted Wave Born Approximation, using realistic hadronic wave functions, obtained by solving three-body Faddeev equations in configuration space.
Using effective Lagrangians, we argue that any time-reversal-violating but parity-conserving effects are too small to be observed in flavor-conserving nuclear processes without dramatic improvement in experimental accuracy. In the process we discuss other arguments that have appeared in the literature.
Using the nonobservance of missing mass events in the leptonic kaon decay $K \to μX$, we place a strong constraint on exotic parity-violating gauge interactions of the right-handed muon. By way of illustration, we apply it to an explanation of the proton size anomaly that invokes such a new force; scenarios in which the gauge boson decays invisibly or is long-lived are constrained.
We calculate $γZ$ exchange corrections to the parity-violating asymmetry of the elastic electron-proton scattering in a parton model using the formalism of generalized parton distributions(GPDs). We also examine the validity of the zero-momentum-transfer approximation adopted in the literatures and find that it overestimates the $γZ$ exchange effect significantly at the forward scattering angles.
The general formalism for polarization observables in elastic electron deuteron scattering is extended to incorporate parity and time reversal violating contributions. Parity violating effects arise from the interference of $γ$ and $Z$ exchange as well as from the hadronic sector via a small parity violating component in the deuteron. In addition we have allowed for time reversal invariance violating contributions in the hadronic sector. Formal expressions for the additional structure functions are derived, and their decomposition into the various multipole contributions are given explicitly.
In this lecture, I review progress made in the calculations of the parity-violating meson-nucleon interaction regions. The underlying framework is the topological chiral soliton model of the nucleon. Emphasis is put on the computation of theoretically and experimentally accessible nuclear parity violating observables. I stress the importance of the interplay of strong and weak interactions which makes this field interesting and challenging. I also discuss recent developments pointing towards the importance of strange quark admixtures in the proton wave function. (Invited talk presented at the …
We calculate the parity-violating amplitudes in the nd interaction with pionless effective field theory to LO. Matching the parity violating low energy constants to the DDH coefficients we make numerical predictions for parity-violating observables. In particular we give predictions for the spin rotation of a neutron on a deuteron target, and target and beam asymmetries in nd scattering.
We calculate the electric-dipole and magnetic-quadrupole form factors of the deuteron that arise as a low-energy manifestation of parity and time-reversal violation in quark-gluon interactions of effective dimension four and six: the QCD vacuum angle, the quark electric and chromo-electric dipole moments, and the gluon chromo-electric dipole moment. Within the framework of two-flavor chiral perturbation theory, we show that the relative sizes of the corresponding moments allow an identification of the symmetry-breaking source.
We present a new contribution of the R-parity violating supersymmetry (SUSY) to neutrinoless double beta decay via the pion exchange between decaying neutrons. The pion coupling to the final state electrons is induced by the R-parity violating SUSY interactions. We have found this pion-exchange mechanism to dominate over the conventional two-nucleon one. The latter corresponds to direct interaction between quarks from two decaying neutrons without any light hadronic mediator like pion. The constraints on the certain R-parity violating SUSY parameters are extracted from the current experimental…
We study the parity-violating alpha+d decay of the lowest 0+ state of Li-6 in a microscopic three-cluster model. The initial bound and the final scattering states are described consistently within the same model. The parity-violating decay width is calculated in perturbation theory using the parity-nonconserving nucleon-nucleon interaction of Desplanques, Donoghue, and Holstein (DDH). We find that the decay width is sensitive to dynamical degrees of freedom which are beyond the alpha+p+n model, for example, alpha excitation and breakup. In our full model, which contains breathing excitations o…
The effect of vacuum polarization on the parity violating asymmetry in the elastic electron-nucleus scattering is considered. Calculations are performed in the high-energy approximation with an exact account for the electric field of the nucleus. It is shown that the radiative correction to the parity violating asymmetry is logarithmically enhanced and the value of the correction is about -1%.
Weak interactions are expected to induce a parity violating pion-nucleon coupling, h_{πNN}^{(1)}. This coupling should be measurable in a proposed experiment to study the parity violating asymmetry A_γin the process \vec n + p \to d+γ. We compute the leading dependence of A_γon the coupling h_{πNN}^{(1)} using recently developed effective field theory techniques and find an asymmetry of A_γ= +0.17 h_{πNN}^{(1)} at leading order. This asymmetry has the opposite sign to that given by Desplanques, Donoghue and Holstein.

Time-reversal breaking and parity-conserving millistrong interactions, suggested in 1965, still remain a viable mechanism of CP-violation beyond the Standard Model. One of its possible manifestations is the T-odd asymmetry in the transmission of tensor-polarized deuterons through a vector-polarized hydrogen gas target. Upon the rotation of the deuteron polarization from the vertical direction into the ring plane, the T-odd asymmetries, odd against the reversal of the proton polarization in the target, will continuously oscillate with first or second harmonics of the spin precession frequency. …
We calculate in chiral perturbation theory the parity-violating two-pion exchange nucleon-nucleon potentials at leading one-loop order. At a distance of $r= m_π^{-1} \simeq 1.4 $fm they amount to about $\pm 16%$ of the parity-violating $1π$-exchange potential. We evaluate also the parity-violating effects arising from $2π$-exchange with excitation of virtual $Δ(1232)$-isobars. These come out to be relatively small in comparison to those from diagrams with only nucleon intermediate states. The reason for this opposite behavior to the parity-conserving case is the blocking of the dominant isosca…
We have made a needed correction to our earlier paper (nucl-th/9511002), which contains a sign error. With this correction, the weak parity-violating pion-nucleon coupling is about 3 x 10^(-7).
We investigate parity-violating asymmetries in polarized n p radiative capture, and deuteron electro-disintegration in quasi-elastic kinematics, using the DDH model for the parity-violating nucleon-nucleon interaction. We find dramatic cancellations between the asymmetries induced by the parity-violating interaction and those arising from the associated parity-violating pion-exchange currents. In np capture, the model-dependence of the result is nevertheless quite small because of constraints arising through the Siegert evaluation of the relevant E1 matrix element. In quasi-elastic electron sc…
It is shown that the number of independent operators in the nucleon-nucleon parity-violating contact Lagrangian at the leading order in the low-momentum expansion, can be reduced to five, by using Fierz rearrangements of the nucleon fields.
Knowledge about parity-violating effects both from theory and experiment is reviewed. Further information that could be obtained from measurements of nuclear anapole moments is discussed.
I discuss several physics issues that can be addressed through the present and future program of parity-violating electron scattering measurements. In particular, I focus on strange quark form factors, hadronic effects in electroweak radiative corrections, and physics beyond the Standard Model.
We consider the parity-violating two-pion-exchange potential obtained from the covariant formalism in the past and the state-of-the-art effective field theory approach. We discuss the behavior of the potential in coordinate space and its application to the parity-violating asymmetry in $\vec{n} p \to d γ$ at threshold.
Sum rules for parity violating spin polarizabilities are derived and discussed. They hold both for hadron and nuclear stable targets of arbitrary spin and are exact in strong interactions. Examples of applications to the cases of proton and deuteron targets are given. The legitimacy of the dispersive approach in the Standard Model is discussed.
We use QCD sum rules to obtain the weak parity-violating pion-nucleon coupling constant $f_{πNN}$. We find that $f_{πNN}\approx 3\times 10^{-8}$, up to an order of magnitude smaller than the ``best estimates" based on quark models. This result follows from the cancellation between perturbative and nonperturbative QCD processes not found in quark models, but explicit in the QCD sum rule method. Our result is consistent with the experimental upper limit found from $^{18}$F parity-violating measurements.
Because the nucleon may be excited and transformed into a virtual $Δ$ resonance easily, we consider the decuplet contribution to the parity-violating (PV) nucleon-nucleon interaction in the chiral effective field theory. The effective PV nucleon-nucleon potential is derived without introducing any unknown coupling constants.
We use the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method, allowing all symmetries to be broken, to calculate the time-reversal-violating nuclear Schiff moment (which induces atomic electric dipole moments) in the octupole-deformed nucleus 225Ra. Our calculation includes several effects neglected in earlier work, including self consistency and polarization of the core by the last nucleon. We confirm that the Schiff moment is large compared to those of reflection-symmetric nuclei, though ours is generally a few times smaller than recent estimates.
The general expressions for parity violation observables in elastic scattering of polarized and/or unpolarized electrons from unpolarized deuterons are given and are numerically evaluated for the kinematics of SAMPLE, PVA4 and G0 experiments. The dominant contribution from the interference of $γ$ and Z exchange as well as the smaller contributions from strangeness ($s{\bar{s}}$) components of the nucleon, parity odd admixtures in the deuteron wave function, anapole moments and radiative corrections are included and discussed in the context of parity violating electron scattering experiments of…
For deuteron electroweak disintegration, parity violating effects are investigated which arise from the interference of $γ$ and $Z$ exchange as well as from the hadronic sector via a small parity violating component in the deuteron. The general formalism for the differential cross section and polarization observables of electromagnetic deuteron disintegration is extended to incorporate parity violating contributions. Formal expressions for the additional structure functions are derived. Results are presented for these parity violating structure functions for quasifree kinematics neglecting fin…
We study the parity-violating effects in $nd\rightarrow$ $^3Hγ$ process using pionless effective field theory (EFT($//!/!/!/pi$)) at thermal energy. For the weak $NN$ interaction the parity-violating Lagrangian contains five independent low-energy coupling constants (LECs). One can fix the coupling constants by comparison of the calculated observables with a sufficient number of experimental data. So, we need five observables to obtain LECs. One of the five parity-violating observables is the photon circular polarization ($P_γ$) in $nd\rightarrow$ $^3Hγ$ process. We calculate $P_γ$ at the lead…
A short review of the present knowledge of the nucleons distribution in nuclei is given. A proposal is made about a possible measurements of the neutron distribution through polarized electron scattering off nuclei.
Parity violating electron nucleus scattering is a clean and powerful tool for measuring the spatial distributions of neutrons in nuclei with unprecedented accuracy. Parity violation arises from the interference of electromagnetic and weak neutral amplitudes, and the $Z^0$ of the Standard Model couples primarily to neutrons at low $Q^2$. Experiments are now feasible at existing facilities. We show that theoretical corrections are either small or well understood, which makes the interpretation clean. A neutron density measurement may have many implications for nuclear structure, atomic parity no…
The proton-proton parity-violating longitudinal asymmetry is calculated in the lab-energy range 0--350 MeV, using a number of different, latest-generation strong-interaction potentials--Argonne V18, Bonn-2000, and Nijmegen-I--in combination with a weak-interaction potential consisting of rho- and omega-meson exchanges--the model known as DDH. The complete scattering problem in the presence of parity-conserving, including Coulomb, and parity-violating potentials is solved in both configuration- and momentum-space. The predicted parity-violating asymmetries are found to be only weakly dependent …
A newly-proposed parity-violating nucleon-nucleon interaction based on effective field theory is studied in this work. It is found that at low energy, i.e., E_lab less than 90 MeV for 1S0-3P0 transitions and E_lab less than 40 MeV for 3S1-1P1 and 3S1-3P1 transitions, the parity-violating observables can be completely specified by a minimal set of six parameters. It contains five low-energy constants, which are equivalent to the Danilov parameters, and an additional parameter that characterizes the long-range one-pion exchange and is proportional to the parity-violating pion-nucleon coupling co…
We calculate the two-boson-exchange (TBE) corrections to the parity asymmetry of the elastic electron-proton scattering in a model using the formalism of generalized parton distributions (GPDs).
The time independent mean field method (TIMF) for the calculation of matrix elements of non relativistic propagators is based on a variational principle whose non linearity induces a multiplicity of variational solutions. Several of them can break any symmetry shared by the Hamiltonian and initial and final states. We describe a soluble model where, in particular, time reversal and parity breakings occur. Such breakings account for important properties of propagation amplitudes.
We propose a nuclear mechanism which can induce an atomic electric dipole moment (EDM). Parity and time reversal violating (P,T-odd) nuclear forces generate a mixed P,T-odd nuclear polarizability beta_{ik} (defined by an energy shift U = -beta_{ik} E_{i}H_{k}, E is electric field and H magnetic field). The interaction of atomic electrons with beta_{ik} produces an atomic EDM. We performed an analytical calculation of the P,T-odd nuclear polarizability and estimated the value for the induced atomic EDM. The measurements of atomic EDMs can provide information about P,T-odd nuclear forces and tes…
