We compute the quantum circuit complexity of the evolution of scalar curvature perturbations on expanding backgrounds, using the language of squeezed vacuum states. In particular, we construct a simple cosmological model consisting of an early-time period of de Sitter expansion followed by a radiation-dominated era and track the evolution of complexity throughout this history. During early-time de Sitter expansion the complexity grows linearly with the number of e-folds for modes outside the horizon. The evolution of complexity also suggests that the Universe behaves like a chaotic system during this era, for which we propose a scrambling time and Lyapunov exponent. During the radiation-dominated era, however, the complexity decreases until it "freezes in" after horizon re-entry, leading to a "de-complexification" of the Universe.
We present some cosmological models which unify the late and early-time acceleration eras with the radiation and the matter domination era, and we realize the cosmological models by using the theoretical framework of $F(R)$ gravity. Particularly, the first model unifies the late and early-time acceleration with the matter domination era, and the second model unifies all the evolution eras of our Universe. The two models are described in the same way at early and late times, and only the intermediate stages of the evolution have some differences. Each cosmological model contains two Type IV sin…
A short introduction to cosmological models that go from an era of accelerated collapse to an expanding era without displaying a singularity is presented.
BICEP2 observations, interpreted most simply, suggest an era of inflation with energy densities of order ($10^{16}\, {\rm GeV})^4$, not far below the Planck density. However, models of TeV gravity with large extra dimensions might allow a very different interpretation involving much more modest energy scales. We discuss the viability of inflation in such models, and conclude that existing scenarios do not provide attractive alternatives to single field inflation in four dimensions. Because the detection of tensor modes strengthens our confidence that inflation occurred, it disfavors models of …
We have studied the evolution of the Universe in the generalized Einstein action of the form $R+βR^2$, where $R$ is the scalar curvature and $β=\rm const.$. We have found exact cosmological solutions that predict the present cosmic acceleration. These models also allow an inflationary de-Sitter era occurring in the early Universe. The cosmological constant ($Λ$) is found to decay with the Hubble constant ($H$) as, $Λ\propto H^4$. In this scenario the cosmological constant varies quadratically with the energy density ($ρ$), i.e., $Λ\propto ρ^2$. Such a variation is found to describe a two-compo…
Cosmological perturbations are generally described by quantum fields on (curved but) classical space-times. While this strategy has a large domain of validity, it can not be justified in the quantum gravity era where curvature and matter densities are of Planck scale. Using techniques from loop quantum gravity, the standard theory of cosmological perturbations is extended to overcome this limitation. The new framework sharpens conceptual issues by distinguishing between the true and apparent trans-Planckian difficulties and provides sufficient conditions under which the true difficulties can b…
On the occasion of a century from the proposal of General relativity by Einstein, I attempt to tackle some open issues in modern cosmology, via a toy but non-trivial model. Specifically, I would like to link together: (i) the smallness of the cosmological constant today, (ii) the evolution of the universe from an inflationary era after the big-bang till now, and (iii) local supersymmetry in the gravitational sector (supergravity) with a broken spectrum at early eras, by making use of the concept of the "running vacuum" in the context of a simple toy model of four-dimensional N=1 supergravity. …
The cosmological reconstruction scheme for modified $F(R)$ gravity is developed in terms of e-folding (or, redshift). It is demonstrated how any FRW cosmology may emerge from specific $F(R)$ theory. The specific examples of well-known cosmological evolution are reconstructed, including $Λ$CDM cosmology, deceleration with transition to phantom superacceleration era which may develop singularity or be transient. The application of this scheme to viable $F(R)$ gravities unifying inflation with dark energy era is proposed. The additional reconstruction of such models leads to non-leading gravitati…

We propose a simple model that provides a dynamical cancellation mechanism of the vacuum energy density appearing either in the form of a bare cosmological constant, quantum fluctuations of matter fields or the result of phase transitions. This `conformal compensator model' is based on a conformal coupling $A(φ)$ between the Einstein and the Jordan frames. This couples a second scalar field $λ$ to the trace of the matter energy-momentum tensor, including the bare cosmological constant, and serves as a dynamical Lagrange multiplier. As a result, the scalar $λ$ relaxes to a value which cancels t…
We consider first-order phase transitions of the Universe in the radiation-dominated era. We argue that in general the velocity of interfaces is non-relativistic due to the interaction with the plasma and the release of latent heat. We study the general evolution of such slow phase transitions, which comprise essentially a short reheating stage and a longer phase equilibrium stage. We perform a completely analytical description of both stages. Some rough approximations are needed for the first stage, due to the non-trivial relations between the quantities that determine the variation of temper…
We investigate cosmological solutions of f(R,T) modified theories of gravity for perfect fluid in spatially FLRW metric through phase space analysis, where R is Ricci scalar and T denotes the trace of energy-momentum tensor of matter content. We explore and analyze three general theories with Lagrangians of minimal $g(R)+h(T)$, pure non--minimal g(R)h(T) and non-minimal $g(R)(1+h(T))$ couplings through dynamical systems approach. We introduce a few variables and dimensionless parameters to simplify the equations in more concise forms. The conservation of energy-momentum tensor leads to a const…
General non-singular accelerating cosmological solutions for an initial cosmic period of pure vacuum birth era are derived. This vacuum era is described by a varying cosmological "constant" suggested by the Renormalisation Group flow of Asymptotic Safety scenario near the ultraviolet fixed point. In this scenario, natural exit from inflation to the standard decelerating cosmology occurs when the energy scale lowers and the cosmological "constant" becomes insignificant. In the following period where matter is also present, cosmological solutions with characteristics similar to the vacuum case a…
We study the late cosmological evolution, from the nonrelativistic matter dominated era to the dark energy era, in modified gravity models described by Degenerate Higher-Order Scalar-Tensor (DHOST) theories. They represent the most general scalar-tensor theories propagating a single scalar degree of freedom and include Horndeski and Beyond Horndeski theories. We provide the homogeneous evolution equations for any quadratic DHOST theory, without restricting ourselves to theories where the speed of gravitational waves coincides with that of light since the present constraints apply to wavelength…
Homogeneous and isotropic cosmologies of the Planck era before the classical Einstein equations become valid are studied taking quantum gravitational effects into account. The cosmological evolution equations are renormalization group improved by including the scale dependence of Newton's constant and of the cosmological constant as it is given by the flow equation of the effective average action for gravity. It is argued that the Planck regime can be treated reliably in this framework because gravity is found to become asymptotically free at short distances. The epoch immediately after the in…
This is a summary of lectures in superstring cosmology given by the author at the CORFU 2009 School and Workshops "Theory - Cosmology - Phenomenology", Corfu Institute, Greece, Sept 6-13, 2009. These lectures are based on some recent developments and ideas, in the framework of superstring theory, concerning the evolution and structure of the universe in (i) the very early "non-geometric"' cosmological era, (ii) the intermediate "radiation-like" era and (iii) the late time cosmological era characterized by the electroweak phase transition.
A cosmological model dominated at the beginning by a dark radiation followed by a period of inflation is presented. This model is based on a Randall-Sundrum II type brane-world. Current observational data are used to fix the parameters associated to the dark radiation.
We study the dynamics of the FLRW flat cosmological models in which the vacuum energy density varies with time, $Λ(t)$. In particular, we investigate the dynamical properties of a generalized vacuum model and we find that under certain conditions the vacuum term in the radiation era varies as $Λ(z) \propto (1+z)^{4}$, while in the matter era we have $Λ(z)\propto (1+z)^{3}$ up to $z\simeq 3$ and $Λ(z)=Λ$ for $z\le 3$. The confirmation of such a behavior would be of paramount importance because it could provide a solution to the cosmic coincidence problem as well as to the fine tuning problem, w…
Starting from an initial classical four dimensional flat background of the heterotic or type II superstrings, we are able to determine at the string one-loop level the quantum corrections to the effective potential due to the spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry by "geometrical fluxes". Furthermore, considering a gas of strings at finite temperature, the full "effective thermal potential" is determined, giving rise to an effective non-trivial pressure. The backreaction of the quantum and thermal corrections to the space-time metric as well as to the moduli fields induces a cosmological evolut…
In the context of Degenerate Higher-Order Scalar-Tensor (DHOST) theories, we study cosmological solutions and their stability properties. In particular, we explicitly illustrate the crucial role of degeneracy by showing how the higher order homogeneous equations in the physical frame (where matter is minimally coupled) can be recast in a system of equations that do not involve higher order derivatives. We study the fixed points of the dynamics, finding the conditions for having a de Sitter attractor at late times. Then we consider the coupling to matter field (described for convenience by a k-…
We calculate the operator complexity for the displacement, squeeze and rotation operators of a quantum harmonic oscillator. The complexity of the time-dependent displacement operator is constant, equal to the magnitude of the coherent state parameter, while the complexity of unitary evolution by a generic quadratic Hamiltonian is proportional to the amount of squeezing and is sensitive to the time-dependent phase of the unitary operator. We apply these results to study the complexity of a free massive scalar field, finding that the complexity has a period of rapid linear growth followed by a s…
Discrepant measurements of the Universe's expansion rate ($H_0$) may signal physics beyond the standard cosmological model. Here I describe two early modified gravity mechanisms that reconcile the value of $H_0$ by increasing the expansion rate in the era of matter-radiation equality. These mechanisms, based on viable Horndeski theories, require significantly less fine-tuned initial conditions than early dark energy with oscillating scalar fields. In Imperfect Dark Energy at Equality (IDEE), the initial energy density dilutes slower than radiation but faster than matter, naturally peaking arou…
We study the evolution of holographic complexity in various AdS/CFT models containing cosmological crunch singularities. We find that a notion of complexity measured by extremal bulk volumes tends to decrease as the singularity is approached in CFT time, suggesting that the corresponding quantum states have simpler entanglement structure at the singularity.
First, we establish which measures of large-scale perturbations are least afflicted by gauge artifacts and directly map the apparent evolution of inhomogeneities to local interactions of cosmological species. Considering nonlinear and linear perturbations of phase-space distribution, radiation intensity and arbitrary species' density, we require that: (i) the dynamics of perturbations defined by these measures is determined by observables within the local Hubble volume; (ii) the measures are practically applicable on microscopic scales and in an unperturbed geometry retain their microscopic me…
This article aims at drawing the attention of astronomers on the ability of future cosmological surveys to put constraints on string theory. The fact that "quantum gravity" might be constrained by large scale astrophysical observations is a remarkable fact that has recently concentrated a great amount of interest. In this work, we focus on future observatories and investigate their capability to put string theory, which is sometimes said to be "unfalsifiable", under serious pressure. We show that the combined analysis of SKA, Euclid, and the Vera Rubin observatory - together with Planck result…
