Gould and Pittalis [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 016401 (2019)] recently revealed a density-driven (DD) correlation energy that is specific to many-electron ensembles and must be accounted for by approximations. We derive in this Letter a general and simpler expression in terms of the ensemble weights, the ensemble Kohn-Sham (KS) orbitals, and their linear response to variations in the ensemble weights. As no additional state-driven KS systems are needed, its evaluation is greatly simplified. We confirm the importance of DD effects and introduce a direct and promising route to approximations.
We use the exact strong-interaction limit of the Hohenberg-Kohn energy density functional to approximate the exchange-correlation energy of the restricted Kohn-Sham scheme. Our approximation corresponds to a highly non-local density functional whose functional derivative can be easily constructed, thus transforming exactly, in a physically transparent way, an important part of the electron-electron interaction into an effective local one-body potential. We test our approach on quasi-one-dimensional systems, showing that it captures essential features of strong correlation that restricted Kohn-…
We present a rigorous formulation of generalized Kohn-Sham density-functional theory. This provides a straightforward Kohn-Sham description of many-body systems based not only on particle-density but also on any other observable. We illustrate the formalism for the case of a particle-density based description of a nonrelativistic many-electron system. We obtain a simple diagrammatic expansion of the exchange-correlation functional in terms of Kohn-Sham single-particle orbitals and energies; develop systematic Kohn-Sham formulation for one-electron propagators and many-body excitation energies.…
We re-adapt a spectral renormalization method, introduced in nonlinear optics, to solve the Kohn-Sham (KS) equations of density functional theory (DFT), with a focus on functionals based on the strictly-correlated electrons (SCE) regime, which are particularly challenging to converge. Important aspects of the method are: (i) the eigenvalues and the density are computed simultaneously; (ii) it converges using randomized initial guesses; (iii) easy to implement. Using this method we could converge for the first time the Kohn-Sham equations with functionals that include the next leading term in t…
It has recently been observed [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 113002 (2014)] that the ground-state energy may be obtained directly as a simple sum of augmented Kohn-Sham orbital energies, where it was ascertained that the corresponding one-body shifted Kohn-Sham effective potential has appealing features. With this in mind, eigenvalue and virial constraints are deduced for approximating this potential.
We present an energy expression for restricted open-shell Kohn-Sham theory for N unpaired electrons and single-electron operators for all multiplets formed from up to five unpaired electrons. It is shown that it is possible to derive an explicit energy expression for all low-spin multiplets of systems that exhibit neither radial nor cylindrical symmetry.
The Kohn-Sham approach to time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) can be formulated, in principle exactly, by invoking the force-balance equation for the density, which leads to an explicit expression for the exchange-correlation potential as an implicit density functional. It is shown that this suggests a reformulation of TDDFT in terms of the second time derivative of the density, rather than the density itself. The result is a time-local Kohn-Sham scheme of second order in time whose causal structure is more transparent than that of the usual Kohn-Sham formalism. The scheme can be …
It is known that the asymptotic decay of the electron density $n(\br)$ outside a molecule is informative about its first ionization potential $I_0$, $n(|\br|\to\infty) \sim \text{exp}(-2\sqrt{2I_0}\,r)$. This dictates the orbital energy of the highest occupied Kohn-Sham (KS) molecular orbital (HOMO) to be $ε_H=-I_0$, if the KS potential goes to zero at infinity. However, when the Kohn-Sham HOMO has a nodal plane, the KS density in that plane will decay as $\exp{(-2\sqrt{-2ε_{H-1}}\,r)}$. Conflicting proposals exist for the KS potential: from exact exchange calculations it has been found that t…
The reconstruction of the exchange-correlation potential from accurate ab initio electron densities can provide insights into the limitations of the currently available approximate functionals and provide guidance for devising improved approximations for density-functional theory (DFT). For open-shell systems, the spin density is introduced as an additional fundamental variable in Spin-DFT. Here, we consider the reconstruction of the corresponding unrestricted Kohn-Sham potentials from accurate ab initio spin densities. In particular, we investigate whether it is possible to reconstruct the sp…
We provide a new derivation of a formula for the Fukui function of density-functional chemical reactivity theory which incorporates the discontinuities in the Kohn-Sham reference system. Orbital relaxations are described in terms of the exchange-correlation (XC) kernel, i.e., the derivative of the XC potential with respect to the density and it is shown that in order to correctly measure the reactivity toward a nucleophilic reagent a discontinuity of the XC kernel has to be taken into account. The importance of this finding is illustrated in model molecular systems.
The exact static and time-dependent Kohn-Sham (KS) exchange-correlation (xc) potential is extremely challenging to approximate as it is a local multiplicative potential that depends on the electron density everywhere in the system. The KS approach can be generalised by allowing part of the potential to be spatially nonlocal. We take this nonlocal part to be that of unrestricted Hartree-Fock theory. The additional local correlation potential in principle ensures that the single-particle density exactly equals the many-body density. In our case, the local correlation potential is predominantly n…
We propose a new generalised Kohn-Sham or constrained hybrid method, where the exchange potential is the (equally weighted) average of the nonlocal Fock exchange term and the self-interaction-corrected exchange potential, as obtained from our constrained minimisation method of semi-local approximations. The new method gives an accurate single-particle eigenvalue spectrum with an average deviation between (the negative of) the valence orbital eigenvalues and the experimental ionisation potentials of about 0.5eV, while the deviation of core orbitals is within 2eV. The improvement in the eigenval…
Kohn-Sham inversion, that is, the finding of the exact Kohn-Sham potential for a given density, is difficult in localized basis sets. We study the precision and reliability of several inversion schemes, finding estimates of density-driven errors at a useful level of accuracy. In typical cases of substantial density-driven errors, HF-DFT is almost as accurate as DFT evaluated on CCSD(T) densities. A simple approximation in practical HF-DFT also makes errors much smaller than the density-driven errors being calculated. Two paradigm examples, stretched NaCl and the HO$\cdot$Cl$^-$ radical, illust…
A recently developed formalism in which Kohn-Sham calculations are combined with an ``average pair density functional theory'' is reviewed, and some new properties of the effective electron-electron interaction entering in this formalism are derived. A preliminary construction of a fully self-consitent scheme is also presented in this framework.
A sufficiently damped iteration of the Kohn-Sham equations with the exact functional is proven to always converge to the true ground-state density, regardless of the initial density or the strength of electron correlation, for finite Coulomb systems. We numerically implement the exact functional for one-dimensional continuum systems and demonstrate convergence of the damped KS algorithm. More strongly correlated systems converge more slowly.
By studying the lowest excitations of an exactly solvable one-dimensional molecular model, we show that components of Kohn-Sham ensembles can be used to describe charge transfers. Furthermore, we compute the approximate excitation energies obtained by using thee exact ensemble densities in the recently formulated ensemble Hartree-exchange theory [Gould and Pittalis, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 243001 (2017)]. Remarkably, our results show that triplet excitations are accurately reproduced across a dissociation curve in all cases tested, even in systems where ground state energies are poor due to stro…
The exact Kohn-Sham iteration of generalized density-functional theory in finite dimensions witha Moreau-Yosida regularized universal Lieb functional and an adaptive damping step is shown toconverge to the correct ground-state density.
Using a simplified one-dimensional model of a diatomic molecule, the associated interacting density and corresponding Kohn-Sham potential have been obtained analytically for all fractional molecule occupancies $N$ between 0 and 2. For the homonuclear case, and in the dissociation limit, the exact Kohn-Sham potential builds a barrier at the midpoint between the two atoms, whose strength increases linearly with $N$, with $1 < N \leq 2$. In the heteronuclear case, the disociating KS potential besides the barrier also exhibits a plateau around the atom with the higher ionization potential, whose s…
A generalization of the Kohn--Sham approach is derived where the correlation-energy functional depends on the one-particle density matrix of noninteracting states and on the external potential from the interacting target-state. The one-particle equations contain the exact exchange potential, a nonlocal correlation potential, and an additional operator involving the correlation density. The electronic-energy functional has multiple solutions: Any one-particle density matrix delivering the target-state density yields a solution. In order to obtain the Kohn--Sham solution, the nonlocal operators …
When running time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations for real-time simulations of non-equilibrium dynamics, the user has a choice of initial Kohn-Sham state, and typically a Slater determinant is used. We explore the impact of this choice on the exchange-correlation potential when the physical system begins in a 50:50 superposition of the ground and first-excited state of the system. We investigate the possibility of judiciously choosing a Kohn-Sham initial state that minimizes errors when adiabatic functionals are used. We find that if the Kohn-Sham state is chosen to ha…
One-electron self-interaction and an incorrect asymptotic behavior of the Kohn-Sham exchange-correlation potential are among the most prominent limitations of many present-day density functionals. However, a one-electron self-interaction-free energy does not necessarily lead to the correct long-range potential. This is here shown explicitly for local hybrid functionals. Furthermore, carefully studying the ratio of the von Weizsäcker kinetic energy density to the (positive) Kohn-Sham kinetic energy density, $τ_\mathrm{W}/τ$, reveals that this ratio, which frequently serves as an iso-orbital ind…
Aiming to combine density functional theory (DFT) and wavefunction theory, we study a mapping from the many-body interacting system to an effectively-interacting Kohn-Sham system instead of a non-interacting Kohn-Sham system. Because a ground state of effectively-interacting systems requires having a solution for the correlated many-body wavefunctions, this provides a natural framework to many-body wavefunction theories such as the configuration interaction and the coupled cluster method in the formal theoretical framework of DFT. Employing simple one-dimensional two-electron systems -- namely…
We propose a way to improve energy density functionals (EDFs) in the density functional theory based on the combination of the inverse Kohn--Sham method and the density functional perturbation theory. Difference between the known EDF and the exact one is treated as the first-order perturbation. As benchmark calculations, we reproduce the theoretical exchange and correlation functionals in the local density approximation. Systems of noble-gas atoms are used for benchmark calculations, and the ground-state energies and densities, as well as the functionals, are reproduced with good accuracies.
A method for calculating the Kohn--Sham exchange-correlation potential, $v_\text{XC}(\mathbf{r})$, from a given electronic wavefunction is devised and implemented. It requires on input one- and two-electron density matrices and involves construction of the generalized Fock matrix. The method is free from numerical limitations and basis-set artifacts of conventional schemes for constructing $v_\text{XC}(\mathbf{r})$ in which the potential is recovered from a given electron density, and is simpler than various many-body techniques. The chief significance of this development is that it allows one…
Kohn-Sham (KS) formalism of Density Functional Theory is modified to include the systems with strong non-dynamic electron correlation. Unlike in extended KS and broken symmetry unrestricted KS formalisms, cases of both singlet-triplet and aufbau instabilities are covered, while preserving a pure spin-state. The straightforward implementation is suggested, which consists of placing spin constraints on complex unrestricted Hartree-Fock wave function. Alternative approximate approach consists of using the perfect pairing implementation with the natural orbitals of unrestricted KS method and squar…
We present a method to invert a given density and find the Kohn-Sham (KS) potential in Density Functional Theory (DFT) which shares that density. Our method employs the concept of screening density, which is naturally constrained by the inversion procedure and thus ensures the density being inverted leads to a smooth KS potential with correct asymptotic behaviour. We demonstrate the applicability of our method by inverting both local (LDA) and non-local (Hartree-Fock and Coupled Cluster) densities; we also show how the method can be used to mitigate the effects of self-interactions in common D…
As a proof of principle, self-consistent Kohn--Sham calculations are performed with the exact exchange-correlation functional. Finding the exact functional for even one trial density requires solving the interacting Schrödinger equation many times. The density matrix renormalization group method makes this possible for one-dimensional, real-space systems of more than two interacting electrons. We illustrate and explore the convergence properties of the exact KS scheme for both weakly and strongly correlated systems. We also explore the spin-dependent generalization and densities for which the …
In the distributed nucleus approximation we represent the singular nucleus as smeared over a smallportion of a Cartesian grid. Delocalizing the nucleus allows us to solve the Poisson equation for theoverall electrostatic potential using a linear scaling multigrid algorithm. This work is done in the context of minimizing the Kohn-Sham energy functionaldirectly in real space with a multiscale approach. The efficacy of the approximation is illustrated bylocating the ground state density of simple one electron atoms and moleculesand more complicated multiorbital systems.
A detailed account of the Kohn-Sham algorithm from quantum chemistry, formulated rigorously in the very general setting of convex analysis on Banach spaces, is given here. Starting from a Levy-Lieb-type functional, its convex and lower semi-continuous extension is regularized to obtain differentiability. This extra layer allows to rigorously introduce, in contrast to the common unregularized approach, a well-defined Kohn-Sham iteration scheme. Convergence in a weak sense is then proven. This generalized formulation is applicable to a wide range of different density-functional theories and poss…

Kohn-Sham regularizer (KSR) is a differentiable machine learning approach to finding the exchange-correlation functional in Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) that works for strongly correlated systems. Here we test KSR for weak correlation. We propose spin-adapted KSR (sKSR) with trainable local, semilocal, and nonlocal approximations found by minimizing density and total energy loss. We assess the atoms-to-molecules generalizability by training on one-dimensional (1D) H, He, Li, Be, Be$^{++}$ and testing on 1D hydrogen chains, LiH, BeH$_2$, and helium hydride complexes. The generaliza…
Early work extending the Kohn-Sham theory to excited states utilized an ensemble average of the Hamiltonian considered as a functional of the corresponding average density. We propose and develop an alternative that utilizes the matrix elements of the density operator taken between any two states of the included space. The new theory is also based on a variational principle for the trace of the Hamiltonian over a selected space of states viewed, however, as a functional of the associated array of matrix elements of the density. It leads to a matrix generalization of Kohn-Sham theory. To illust…
A Kohn-Sham (KS) inversion determines a KS potential and orbitals corresponding to a given electron density, a procedure that has applications in developing and evaluating functionals used in density functional theory. Despite the utility of KS inversions, application of these methods among the research community is disproportionately small. We implement the KS inversion methods of Zhao-Morrison-Parr and Wu-Yang in a framework that simplifies analysis and conversion of the resulting potential in real-space. Fully documented Python scripts integrate with PySCF, a popular electronic structure pr…
Using finite basis sets, it is shown how to construct a local Hamiltonian, such that one of its infinitely many degenerate eigenfunctions is the ground state full configuration interaction (FCI) wave function in that basis set. Formally, the local potential of this Hamiltonian is the optimized effective potential and the exact Kohn-Sham potential at the same time, because the FCI wave function yields the exact ground-state density and energy. It is not the aim of this paper to provide a new algorithm for obtaining FCI wave functions. A new potential is the goal.
In the well-known Kohn-Sham theory in Density Functional Theory, a fictitious non-interacting system is introduced that has the same particle density as a system of $N$ electrons subjected to mutual Coulomb repulsion and an external electric field. For a long time, the treatment of the kinetic energy was not correct and the theory was not well-defined for $N$-representable particle densities. In the work of [Hadjisavvas and Theophilou, Phys. Rev. A, 1984, 30, 2183], a rigorous Kohn-Sham theory for $N$-representable particle densities was developed using the Levy-Lieb functional. Since a Levy-L…
Given the time-evolution of an electron charge density, the local potential in Kohn-Sham time-dependent density functional theory (KS-TDDFT) can be modeled as a sum of instantaneous and dynamic contributions by assuming a certain form of the time-dependent Kohn-Sham (TD-KS) orbitals. The instantaneous part is obtained numerically using methods from ground-state density functional theory (DFT) and the dynamic part is expressed in terms of a velocity potential that depends on the electron current density. The suggested form of the TD-KS orbitals satisfies several known constraints (orthonormalit…
Hubertus J. J. van Dam [Phys. Rev. A 93, 052512, 2016] claims that the one-particle reduced density matrix (1RDM) of an interacting system can be represented by means of a single-determinant wavefunction of fictitious non-interacting particles. van Dam introduced orbitals within a mean-field framework that produce energy levels similar to Hartree-Fock (HF) orbital energies, therefore he also claims that conventional analyses based on Koopmans theorem are possible in 1RDM functional theory (1RDMFT). In this comment, we demonstrate that both claims are unfounded.
We present a simple geometrical "fluidic" approximation to the non-adiabatic part of the Kohn-Sham potential, $v_{\mathrm{KS}}$, of time-dependent density functional theory. This part of $v_{\mathrm{KS}}$ is often crucial, but most practical functional approximations utilize an adiabatic approach based on ground-state DFT. For a variety of prototype systems, we calculate the exact time-dependent electron density, and find that the fluidic approximation corrects a large part of the error arising from the "exact adiabatic" approach, even when the system is evolving far from adiabatically.
The density-functional based symmetry-adapted perturbation theory [SAPT(DFT)] has been applied to the argon, krypton, and benzene dimers. It is shown that--at a small fraction of computational costs--SAPT(DFT) can provide similar accuracies for the interaction energies as high-level wave-function based methods with extrapolations to the complete basis set limits. This accuracy is significantly higher than that of any other DFT or DFT-based approaches proposed to date.
In a recent Letter, Baer et al. present a stochastic method for Kohn-Sham density functional theory calculations. Their convergence criterion is the self-averaging total energy per electron, which requires a number of statistical samples that decreases with system size and enables a sublinear-scaling computational cost. However, the electron density, atomic forces, orbital energies, and many other physical quantities do not self-average, and this procedure causes their statistical errors to grow with system size. Convergence of non-self-averaging quantities requires that the number of samples …
The question of how density functional theory (DFT) compares with Hartree-Fock (HF) for the computation of momentum-space properties is addressed in relation to systems for which (near) exact Kohn-Sham (KS) and HF one-electron matrices are known. This makes it possible to objectively compare HF and exact KS and hence to assess the potential of DFT for momentum space studies. The systems considered are the Moshinsky atom, the Hooke's atom and light two-electron ions, for which expressions for correlated density-matrices or momentum densities have been derived in closed-form. The results obtaine…
In this paper, we study numerical discretizations to solve density functional models in the "strictly correlated electrons" (SCE) framework. Unlike previous studies our work is not restricted to radially symmetric densities. In the SCE framework, the exchange-correlation functional encodes the effects of the strong correlation regime by minimizing the pairwise Coulomb repulsion, resulting in an optimal transport problem. We give a mathematical derivation of the self-consistent Kohn-Sham-SCE equations, construct an efficient numerical discretization for this type of problem for N = 2 electrons,…
In numerical computations of response properties of electronic systems, the standard model is Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT). Here we investigate the mathematical status of the simplest class of excitations in KS-DFT, HOMO-LUMO excitations. We show using concentration-compactness arguments that such excitations, i.e. excited states of the Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian, exist for $Z>N$, where $Z$ is the total nuclear charge and $N$ is the number of electrons. The result applies under realistic assumptions on the exchange-correlation functional, which we verify explicitly for the widely us…
KSSOLV (Kohn-Sham Solver) is a MATLAB toolbox for performing Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) calculations with a plane-wave basis set. KSSOLV 2.0 preserves the design features of the original KSSOLV software to allow users and developers to easily set up a problem and perform ground-state calculations as well as to prototype and test new algorithms. Furthermore, it includes new functionalities such as new iterative diagonalization algorithms, k-point sampling for electron band structures, geometry optimization and advanced algorithms for performing DFT calculations with local, semi-l…
This work presents a theory to unify the two independent theoretical frameworks of Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory (DFT) and reduced density matrix functional theory (RDMFT). The generalization of the KS orbitals to hypercomplex number systems leads to the hypercomplex KS (HCKS) theory, which extends the search space for the density in KS-DFT to a space that is equivalent to natural spin orbitals with fractional occupations in RDMFT. Thereby, HCKS is able to capture the multi-reference nature of strong correlation by dynamically varying fractional occupations. Moreover, the potential …
The most widely-used density functionals for the exchange-correlation energy are inexact for one-electron systems. Their self-interaction errors can be severe in some applications. The problem is not only to correct the self-interaction error, but to do so in a way that will not violate size-consistency and will not go outside the standard Kohn-Sham density functional theory. The solution via the optimized effective potential (OEP) method will be discussed, first for the Perdew-Zunger self-interaction correction (whose performance for molecules is briefly summarized) and then for the more mode…
We present a broadly-applicable, physically-motivated first-principles approach to determining the fundamental gap of finite systems. The approach is based on using a range-separated hybrid functional within the generalized Kohn-Sham approach to density functional theory. Its key element is the choice of a range-separation parameter such that Koopmans' theorem for both the neutral and anionic is obeyed as closely as possible. We demonstrate the validity, accuracy, and advantages of this approach on first, second, and third row atoms, the oligoacene family of molecules, and a set of hydrogen-pa…
Kohn-Sham density functional theory calculations using conventional diagonalization based methods become increasingly expensive as temperature increases due to the need to compute increasing numbers of partially occupied states. We present a density matrix based method for Kohn-Sham calculations at high temperature that eliminates the need for diagonalization entirely, thus reducing the cost of such calculations significantly. Specifically, we develop real-space expressions for the electron density, electronic free energy, Hellmann-Feynman forces, and Hellmann-Feynman stress tensor in terms of…
The Kohn-Sham (KS) equations determine, in a self-consistent way, the particle density of an interacting fermion system at thermal equilibrium. We consider a situation when the KS equations are known to have a unique solution at high temperatures and this solution is a uniform particle density. We show that, at zero temperature, there are stable solutions that are not uniform. We provide the general principles behind this phenomenon, namely the conditions when it can be observed and how to construct these non-uniform solutions. Two concrete examples are provided, including fermions on the sphe…

We report on a methodology for the treatment of the Coulomb energy and potential in Kohn-Sham density functional theory that is free from self-interaction effects. Specifically, we determine the Coulomb potential given as the functional derivative of the Coulomb energy with respect to the density, where the Coulomb energy is calculated explicitly in terms of the pair density of the Kohn-Sham orbitals. This is accomplished by taking advantage of an orthonormal and complete basis that is an explicit functional of the density that then allows for the functional differentiation of the pair density…
We examine various integration schemes for the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equations. Contrary to the time-dependent Schrödinger's equation, this set of equations is non-linear, due to the dependence of the Hamiltonian on the electronic density. We discuss some of their exact properties, and in particular their symplectic structure. Four different families of propagators are considered, specifically the linear multistep, Runge-Kutta, exponential Runge-Kutta, and the commutator-free Magnus schemes. These have been chosen because they have been largely ignored in the past for time-dependent electro…
