In \cite{st2017}, the authors introduced the so-called \emph{general divide and color models}. One of the most well-known examples of such a model is the Ising model with external field $h = 0$, which has a color representation given by the random cluster model. In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for this color representation to be unique. We also show that if one considers the Ising model on a complete graph, then for many $h > 0$, there is no color representation. This shows in particular that any generalization of the random cluster model which provides color representations of Ising models with external fields cannot, in general, be a generalized divide and color models. Furthermore, we show that there can be at most finitely many $β> 0$ at which the random cluster model can be continuously extended to a color representation for $h \not = 0$.
We study the natural linear operators associated to divide and color (DC) models. The degree of nonuniqueness of the random partition yielding a DC model is directly related to the dimension of the kernel of these linear operators. We determine exactly the dimension of these kernels as well as analyze a permutation-invariant version. We also obtain properties of the solution set for certain parameter values which will be important in (1) showing that large threshold discrete Gaussian free fields are DC models and in (2) analyzing when the Ising model with a positive external field is a DC mode…
A sharp-threshold theorem is proved for box-crossing probabilities on the square lattice. The models in question are the random-cluster model near the self-dual point $p_{\mathrm {sd}}(q)=\sqrt{q}/(1+\sqrt{q})$, the Ising model with external field, and the colored random-cluster model. The principal technique is an extension of the influence theorem for monotonic probability measures applied to increasing events with no assumption of symmetry.
We introduce Kadanoff-Ceva order-disorder operators in the quantum Ising model. This approach was first used for the classical planar Ising model and recently put back to the stage. This representation turns out to be equivalent to the loop expansion of Sminorv's fermionic observables and is particularly interesting due to its simple and compact formulation. Using this approach, we are able to extend different results known in the classical planar Ising model, such as the conformal invariance/covariance of correlations and the energy-density, to the spin-representation of the (1+1) dimensional…
For the FK representation of the Ising model, we prove that the slab percolation threshold coincides with the critical temperature in any dimension larger or equal to three.
We study infinite ``$+$'' or ``$-$'' clusters for an Ising model on an connected, transitive, non-amenable, planar, one-ended graph $G$ with finite vertex degree. If the critical percolation probability $p_c^{site}$ for the i.i.d.~Bernoulli site percolation on $G$ is less than $\frac{1}{2}$, we find an explicit region for the coupling constant of the Ising model such that there are infinitely many infinite ``$+$''-clusters and infinitely many infinite ``$-$''-clusters, while the random cluster representation of the Ising model has no infinite 1-clusters. If $p_c^{site}>\frac{1}{2}$, we obtain …
We study graphical representations for two related models. The first model is the transverse field quantum Ising model, an extension of the original Ising model which was introduced by Lieb, Schultz and Mattis in the 1960's. The second model is the space-time percolation process, which is closely related to the contact model for the spread of disease. We consider a `space-time' random-cluster model and explore a range of useful probabilistic techniques for studying it. The space-time Potts model emerges as a natural generalization of the quantum Ising model. The basic properties of the phase t…
Under some general assumptions, we construct the scaling limit of open clusters and their associated counting measures in a class of two dimensional percolation models. Our results apply, in particular, to critical Bernoulli site percolation on the triangular lattice and to the critical FK-Ising model on the square lattice. Fundamental properties of the scaling limit, such as conformal covariance, are explored. As an application to Bernoulli percolation, we obtain the scaling limit of the largest cluster in a bounded domain. We also apply our results to the critical, two-dimensional Ising mode…
The Bozonisation identities of [Dub11] show that squared 2d-Ising order and disorder correlations are equal to +- the ratio of bipartite dimer partition functions. In this self-contained paper, we give another proof of these identities using the approach of [BdT14]. Our proof is more direct and allows to keep track of order and disorder in XOR-Ising configurations.
Recently, a random current representation for transverse field Ising models has been introduced in \cite{ILN}. This representation is a space-time version of the classical random current representation exploited by Aizenman et. al. %It is a space-time version of the classical random current representation \cite{Ai82, ABF, AF}. In this paper we formulate and prove corresponding space-time versions of the classical switching lemma and show how they generate various correlation inequalities. In particular we prove exponential decay of truncated two-point functions at positive magnetic fields in $…
The XOR-Ising model on a graph consists of random spin configurations on vertices of the graph obtained by taking the product at each vertex of the spins of two independent Ising models. In this paper, we explicitly relate loop configurations of the XOR-Ising model and those of a dimer model living on a decorated, bipartite version of the Ising graph. This result is proved for graphs embedded in compact surfaces of genus g. Using this fact, we then prove that XOR-Ising loops have the same law as level lines of the height function of this bipartite dimer model. At criticality, the height functi…
We prove that the Loop O(1) model, a well-known graphical expansion of the Ising model, is a factor of i.i.d. on unimodular random rooted graphs under various conditions, including in the presence of a non-negative external field. As an application we show that the gradient of the free Ising model is a factor of i.i.d. on unimodular planar maps having a locally finite dual. The key idea is to develop an appropriate theory of local limits of uniform even subgraphs with various boundary conditions and prove that they can be sampled as a factor of i.i.d. Another key tool we prove and exploit is t…
We study the continuum scaling limit of the critical Ising magnetization in two dimensions. We prove the existence of subsequential limits, discuss connections with the scaling limit of critical FK clusters, and describe work in progress of the author with C. Garban and C.M. Newman.
This work is concerned with the theory of Graphical Representation for the Ising and Potts Models over general lattices with non-translation invariant external field. We explicitly describe in terms of the Random Cluster Representation the distribution function and, consequently, the expected value of a single spin for the Ising and $q$-states Potts Models with general external fields. We also consider the Gibbs States for the Edwards-Sokal Representation of the Potts Model with non-translation invariant magnetic field and prove a version of the FKG Inequality for the so called General Random …
We introduce and analyze a generalization of the blocks spin Ising (Curie-Weiss) models that were discussed in a number of recent articles. In these block spin models each spin in one of $s$ blocks can take one of a finite number of $q \ge 3$ values, hence the name block spin Potts model. The values a spin can take are called colors. We prove a large deviation principle for the percentage of spins of a certain color in a certain block. These values are represented in an $s \times q$ matrix. We show that for uniform block sizes and appropriately chosen interaction strength there is a phase tran…
An extension of the Ising spin configurations to continuous functions is used for an exact representation of the Random Field Ising Model's order parameter in terms of disagreement percolation. This facilitates an extension of the recent analyses of the decay of correlations to positive temperatures, at homogeneous but arbitrarily weak disorder.
Phase transitions are a central theme of statistical mechanics, and of probability more generally. Lattice spin models represent a general paradigm for phase transitions in finite dimensions, describing ferromagnets and even some fluids (lattice gases). It has been understood since the 1980s that random geometric representations, such as the random walk and random current representations, are powerful tools to understand spin models. In addition to techniques intrinsic to spin models, such representations provide access to rich ideas from percolation theory. In recent years, for two-dimensiona…
We consider the contour representation of the infinite volume Ising model at low temperature. Fix a subset V of Z^d, and a (large) N such that calling G_{N,V} the set of contours of length at least N intersecting V, there are in average one contour in G_{N,V} under the infinite volume "plus" measure. We find bounds on the total variation distance between the law of the contours of lenght at least N intersecting V under the "plus" measure and a Poisson process. The proof builds on the Chen-Stein method as presented by Arratia, Goldstein and Gordon. The control of the correlations is obtained th…
We present a rigorous determination of the critical value of the ground-state quantum Ising model in a transverse field, on a class of planar graphs which we call star-like. These include the star graph, which is a junction of several copies of Z at a single point. Our approach is to use the graphical, or FK-, representation of the model, and the probabilistic and geometric tools associated with it.
We provide a representation for the scaling limit of the d=2 critical Ising magnetization field as a (conformal) random field using SLE (Schramm-Loewner Evolution) clusters and associated renormalized area measures. The renormalized areas are from the scaling limit of the critical FK (Fortuin-Kasteleyn) clusters and the random field is a convergent sum of the area measures with random signs. Extensions to off-critical scaling limits, to d=3 and to Potts models are also considered.
For the two-dimensional random field Ising model (RFIM) with bimodal (i.e., two-valued) external field, we prove exponential decay of correlations either (1) when the temperature is larger than the critical temperature of the Ising model without external field and the magnetic field strength is small or (2) at any temperature when the magnetic field strength is sufficiently large. Unlike previous work on exponential decay, our approach is not based on cluster expansions but rather on arguably simpler methods; these combine an analysis of the Kertész line and a coupling of Ising measures (and a…
