HD106906b is an ~11$M_{\mathrm{Jup}}$, ~15Myr old directly-imaged exoplanet orbiting at an extremely large distance from its host star. The wide separation (7.11 arcsec) between HD106906b and its host star greatly reduces the difficulty in direct-imaging observations, making it one of the most favorable directly-imaged exoplanets for detailed characterization. In this paper, we present HST/WFC3/IR time-resolved observations of HD106906b in the F127M, F139M, and F153M bands. We have achieved ~1% precision in the lightcurves in all three bands. The F127M lightcurve demonstrates marginally-detectable ($2.7σ$ significance) variability with a best-fitting period of 4 hr, while the lightcurves in the other two bands are consistent with flat lines. We construct primary-subtracted deep images and use these images to exclude additional companions to HD106906 that are more massive than 4$M_{\mathrm{Jup}}$ and locate at projected distances of more than ~500 au. We measure the astrometry of HD106906b in two HST/WFC3 epochs and achieve precisions better than 2.5 mas. The position angle and separation measurements do not deviate from those in the 2004 HST/ACS/HRC images for more than $1σ$ uncertainty. We provide the HST/WFC3 astrometric results for 25 background stars that can be used as reference sources in future precision astrometry studies. Our observations also provide the first 1.4-micron water band photometric measurement for HD106906b. HD106906b's spectral energy distribution and the best-fitting BT-Settl model have an inconsistency in the 1.4-micron water absorption band, which highlights the challenges in modeling atmospheres of young planetary-mass objects.
We present the first scattered-light images of two debris disks around the F8 star HD 104860 and the F0V star HD 192758, respectively $\sim45$ and $\sim67$ pc away. We detected these systems in the F110W and F160W filters through our re-analysis of archival Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS data with modern starlight subtraction techniques. Our image of HD 104860 confirms the morphology previously observed by Herschel in thermal emission with a well-defined ring at radius $\sim114$ au inclined $\sim58$ degrees. Although the outer edge profile is consistent with dynamical evolution models, the shar…
The apparent detection of an exoplanet orbiting Fomalhaut was announced in 2008. However, subsequent observations of Fomalhaut b raised questions about its status: Unlike other exoplanets, it is bright in the optical and nondetected in the infrared, and its orbit appears to cross the debris ring around the star without the expected gravitational perturbations. We revisit previously published data and analyze additional Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data, finding that the source is likely on a radial trajectory and has faded and become extended. Dynamical and collisional modeling of a recently p…
Directly-imaged planetary-mass companions offer unique opportunities in atmospheric studies of exoplanets. They share characteristics of both brown dwarfs and transiting exoplanets, therefore, are critical for connecting atmospheric characterizations for these objects. Rotational phase mapping is a powerful technique to constrain the condensate cloud properties in ultra-cool atmospheres. Applying this technique to directly-imaged planetary-mass companions will be extremely valuable for constraining cloud models in low mass and surface gravity atmospheres and for determining the rotation rate a…
Most directly imaged giant exoplanets are fainter than brown dwarfs with similar spectra. To explain their relative underluminosity unusually cloudy atmospheres have been proposed. However, with multiple parameters varying between any two objects, it remained difficult to observationally test this idea. We present a new method, sensitive time-resolved Hubble Space Telescope near-infrared spectroscopy, to study two rotating L/T transition brown dwarfs (2M2139 and SIMP0136). The observations provide spatially and spectrally resolved mapping of the cloud decks of the brown dwarfs. The data allow …
Rotational modulations of emission spectra in brown dwarf and exoplanet atmospheres show that clouds are often distributed non-uniformly in these ultracool atmospheres. The spatial heterogeneity in cloud distribution demonstrates the impact of atmospheric dynamics on cloud formation and evolution. In this study, we update the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) time-series data analysis of the previously reported rotational modulations of WISEP J004701+680352 -- an unusually red late-L brown dwarf with a spectrum similar to that of the directly imaged planet HR8799e. We construct a self-consistent sp…
We present observations of three protoplanetary disks in visible scattered light around M-type stars in the Upper Scorpius OB association using the STIS instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope. The disks around stars 2MASS J16090075-1908526, 2MASS J16142029-1906481 and 2MASS J16123916-1859284 have all been previously detected with ALMA, and 2MASS J16123916-1859284 has never previously been imaged at scattered light wavelengths. We process our images using Reference Differential Imaging, comparing and contrasting three reduction techniques - classical subtraction, Karhunen-Loeve Image Projecti…

The Unrealised Interdisciplinary Advantage of Observing High Mass Transiting Exoplanets and Brown Dwarfs -- Strategic Exoplanet Initiatives with HST and JWST White Paper
We present a far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectral atlas consisting of spectra of 91 pre-main sequence stars. Most stars in this sample were observed with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the \emph{Hubble Space Telescope} (\emph{HST}). We find strong correlations among the \ion{O}{1} $λ$1304 triplet, %\ion{C}{2} $λ$1335, the \ion{Si}{4} $λλ$1394/1403 doublet, the \ion{C}{4} $λ$1549 doublet, and the \ion{He}{2} $λ$1640 line luminosities. For classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs), we also find strong correlations between these lines and the accretion lu…
Young brown dwarfs are analogs to giant exoplanets, as they share effective temperatures, near-infrared colors, and surface gravities. Thus, the detailed characterization of young brown dwarfs might shed light on the study of giant exoplanets, that we are currently unable to observe with sufficient signal-to-noise to allow precise characterization of their atmospheres. 2MASS J22081363+2921215 is a young L3 brown dwarf, member of the beta-Pictoris young moving group (23 +/-3 Myr), that shares its effective temperature and mass with the beta Pictoris b giant exoplanet. We performed a ~2.5 hr spe…
Three planets have been directly imaged around the young star HR 8799. The planets are 5-13 Mjup and orbit the star at projected separations of 24-68 AU. While the initial detection occurred in 2007, two of the planets were recovered in a re-analysis of data obtained in 2004. Here we present a detection of the furthest planet of that system, HR 8799 b, in archival HST/NICMOS data from 1998. The detection was made using the locally-optimized combination of images algorithm to construct, from a large set of HST/NICMOS images of different stars taken from the archive, an optimized reference point…
Multi-wavelength time-resolved observations of rotationally modulated variability from brown dwarfs and giant exoplanets are the most effective method for constraining their heterogeneous atmospheric structures. In a companion paper (Bowler et al. 2020), we reported the discovery of strong near-infrared variability in HST/WFC3/G141 light curves of the very red L-dwarf companion VHS J1256-1257b. In this paper, we present a follow-up 36-hr Spitzer/IRAC Channel 2 light curve together with an in-depth analysis of the HST and the Spitzer data. The combined dataset provides time-resolved light curve…
Among the greatest challenges in understanding ultra-cool brown dwarf and exoplanet atmospheres is the evolution of cloud structure as a function of temperature and gravity. In this study, we present the rotational modulations of GU Psc b -- a rare mid-T spectral type planetary-mass companion at the end of the L/T spectral type transition. Based on the HST/WFC3 1.1-1.67$\rm\, μm$ time-series spectra, we observe a quasi-sinusoidal light curve with a peak-to-trough flux variation of 2.7 % and a minimum period of eight hours. The rotation-modulated spectral variations are weakly wavelength-depend…
We present analysis of {\it Hubble Space Telescope} (HST) observations of Centaur 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 (SW1) while in outburst to characterize the outburst coma and place constraints on the nucleus' spin state. The observations consist of Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) images from Cycle 5, GO-5829 (Feldman (1995)) acquired on UT 1996 March 11.3 and 12.1, which serendipitously imaged the Centaur shortly after a major outburst. A multi-component coma was detected consisting of: an expanding outburst dust coma with complex morphology possessing an east-west asymmetry and north-so…
Observations of Uranus were made on the 8/9th November with HST/WFC3 at a time when a huge cloud complex was present at 30 - 40N. We imaged Uranus in seven filters spanning 467 - 924 nm, and analysed these observations with the NEMESIS radiative-transfer and retrieval code. The same system was also observed in the H-band with VLT/SINFONI ON 31st October and 11th November (Irwin et al., 2016). To constrain the background cloud particle sizes and scattering properties we conducted a limb-darkening analysis of the background cloud structure at 30-40N by simultaneously fitting: a) these HST/OPAL o…
Near-Sun Comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) is the first member of a long-period comet group observed to disintegrate well before perihelion. Here we present our investigation into this disintegration event using images obtained in a 3-day {\it Hubble Space Telescope} (\hst) campaign. We identify two fragment clusters produced by the initial disintegration event, corresponding to fragments C/2019 Y4-A and C/2019 Y4-B identified in ground-based data. These two clusters started with similar integrated brightness, but exhibit different evolutionary behavior. C/2019 Y4-A was much shorter-lived compared to C/…
We present thermal phase curve measurements for the hot Jupiter WASP-103b observed with Hubble/WFC3 and Spitzer/IRAC. The phase curves have large amplitudes and negligible hotspot offsets, indicative of poor heat redistribution to the nightside. We fit the phase variation with a range of climate maps and find that a spherical harmonics model generally provides the best fit. The phase-resolved spectra are consistent with blackbodies in the WFC3 bandpass, with brightness temperatures ranging from $1880\pm40$ K on the nightside to $2930 \pm 40$ K on the dayside. The dayside spectrum has a signifi…
