We investigate and compare the possibilities of observing decaying dark matter (DM) in $γ$-ray and radio telescopes. The special emphasise of the study is on a scalar heavy DM particle with mass in the trans-TeV range. DM decays, consistent with existing limits on the life time, are assumed to be driven by higher dimensional effective operators. We consider both two-body decays of a scalar dark particle and a dark sector having three-body decays, producing two standard model particles. It is found that the Fermi-LAT data on isotropic $γ$-ray background provides the best constraints so far, although the CTA telescope may be more effective for decays where one or two photons are directly produced. In all cases, deeper probes of the effective operators are possible in the upcoming SKA radio telescope with a few hundred hours of observation, using the radio synchrotron flux coming from energetic electrons produced in the decay cascades within dwarf spheroidal galaxies. Finally, we estimate how the SKA can constrain the parameter space spanned by the galactic magnetic field and the diffusion coefficient, if observations consistent with $γ$-ray data actually take place.
A TeV scale decaying dark matter chiral multiplet N is introduced in addition to the minimal supersymmetric standard model(MSSM). For a calculable abundance of N, we introduce heavy axino decaying to N and MSSM particles including the lightest supersymmetric particle(LSP). In the scenario that heavy axino, once dominating the energy density of the universe, decays after the LSP decouples, it is possible to estimate the relative cosmic abundances of N and the LSP. Dimension 6 interactions allow the lifetime of the fermionic or the bosonic superpartner of N in the 10^{27} s range to be compatibl…
We consider decaying dark matter with masses $10^{7} \lesssim M \lesssim 10^{16}$ GeV, as a source of ultra-high energy (UHE) gamma rays. Using recent limits on UHE gamma-ray flux for energies $E_γ> 2 \cdot 10^{14}$ eV, provided by extensive air shower observatories, we put limits on masses and lifetimes of the dark matter. We also discuss possible dark matter decay origin of tentative 100 PeV photon flux detected with EAS-MSU experiment.
We consider dark matter consisting of long--living particles with masses $10^{7}~\lesssim~M~\lesssim~10^{16}$ GeV decaying through hadronic channel as a source of high energy neutrino. Using recent data on high energy neutrino from IceCube and Pierre Auger experiments we derive the upper-limits on neutrino flux from dark matter decay and constraints on dark matter parameter space. For the dark matter masses of order $10^8$ GeV the constraints derived are slightly stronger than those obtained for the same dark matter model using the high energy gamma-ray limits.
Formulae are derived for the positions of end-points in the invariant mass and transverse mass distributions obtained from the products of heavy states decaying to pairs of semi-invisibly decaying lighter states. Formulae are derived both for the special case where the two decay chains are identical and the more general case where they are different. The formulae are tested with a simple case study of heavy SUSY higgs particles decaying to gauginos at the LHC.
We examine the hypothesis of decaying heavy dark matter (HDM) in the context of the IceCube highest energy neutrino events and recent limits on the diffuse flux of high-energy photons. We consider dark matter (DM) particles $X$ of mass $10^{6}\leq M_X\leq~10^{16}$ GeV decaying on tree level into $X \rightarrow ν\barν$, $X \rightarrow e^+e^-$ and $X \rightarrow q \bar{q}$. The full simulation of hadronic and electroweak decay cascades and the subsequent propagation of the decay products through the interstellar medium allows us to determine the permitted values of $M_X$. We show that for lepton…
Considering that the ultrahigh energy (UHE) upgoing muon neutrino events around the PeV energy region observed by the IceCube are due to the decay of super heavy dark matter to neutrinos, we constrain the mass of the decaying dark matter and its decay lifetime using the IceCube analysis of these neutrinos in the PeV region. The theoretical fluxes are computed by adpoting the procedure given in the reference [1,2], where the DGLAP numerical evolutions of QCD cascades as well as electroweak corrections are included for evolving the decay process of the super heavy dark matter. Our results indica…
The dimuon and dielectron data from the Tevatron $\bar pp$ collider are used to probe for heavy quarks, which decay dominantly via flavour changing neutral current. Depending on whether the $FCNC$ decay occurs at the tree or loop level, one gets a lower mass limit of 85 or 75 GeV. The former applies to singlet, vector doublet and mirror type quarks while the latter applies to a lefthanded quark doublet of the fourth generation.
The tau neutrino with a mass of about 10 MeV can be the ``late decaying particle'' in the cold dark matter scenario for the formation of structure in the Universe. We show how this may be realized specifically in the recently proposed doublet Majoron model.
We consider a decaying scalar dark matter (DM) with mass $m_χ$ in the range 10 GeV - 10 TeV and vary the branching ratios of all possible two-body SM final states (excluding and including $ν\barν$) in the range $0\%-100\%$ to derive constraints on the total decay width $Γ$ using the data collected by several astrophysical and cosmological observations. We find that, $Γ\lesssim 10^{-26} - 10^{-27}\,{\rm s}^{-1}$ (excluding $ν\barν$) and $Γ\lesssim 10^{-24} - 10^{-26}\,{\rm s}^{-1}$ (including $ν\barν$) are allowed, depending on the values of $m_χ$, which are most robust upper limits on $Γ$ for …
A monochromatic line in the cosmic neutrino spectrum would be a smoking gun signature of dark matter. It is intriguing that the IceCube experiment has recently reported two PeV neutrino events with energies that may be equal up to experimental uncertainties, and which have a probability of being a background fluctuation estimated to be less than a percent. Here we explore prospects for these events to be the first indication of a monochromatic line signal from dark matter. While measurable annihilation signatures would seem to be impossible at such energies, we discuss the dark matter quantum …
A new algorithm for the identification of boosted, hadronically decaying, heavy particles at the LHC is presented. The algorithm is based on the known procedure of jet clustering with variable distance parameter $R$ and adapts the jet size to its transverse momentum $p_T$. Subjets are found using a mass jump condition. The resulting algorithm - called Heavy Object Tagger with Variable $R$ (HOTVR) - features little algorithmic complexity and combines jet clustering, subjet finding and rejection of soft clusters in one sequence. While the HOTVR algorithm can be used for the identification of any…
After the first four years of data taking, the IceCube neutrino telescope has observed 54 high-energy starting events (HESE) with deposited energies between 20 TeV and 2 PeV. The background from atmospheric muons and neutrinos is expected to be of about 20 events, all below 100 TeV, thus pointing towards the astrophysical origin of about 8 events per year in that data set. However, their precise origin remains unknown. Here, we perform a detailed analysis of this event sample (considering simultaneously the energy, hemisphere and topology of the events) by assuming two contributions for the si…
We discuss the sensitivity of a 100 TeV pp collider to heavy particles decaying to top-antitop final states. This center-of-mass energy, together with an integrated luminosity of 10 ab-1, can produce heavy particles in the mass range of several tens of teraelectronvolts (TeV). A Monte Carlo study has been performed using boosted-top techniques to reduce QCD background for the reconstruction of heavy particles with masses in the range of 8-20 TeV, and various widths. In particular, we have studied two models that predict heavy states, a model with an extra gauge boson (Zprime) and with a Kaluza…
We develop the formalism discussed previously in hep-ph/0601209 and hep-ph/0605246 to construct a kinetic theory that provides insight into the earliest ``Glasma'' stage of a high energy heavy ion collision. Particles produced from the decay of classical fields in the Glasma obey a Boltzmann equation whose novel features include an inhomogeneous source term and new contributions to the collision term. We discuss the power counting associated with the different terms in the Boltzmann equation and outline the transition from the field dominated regime to the particle dominated regime in high ene…
Observing a heavy charged Higgs boson produced in the near future at the Tevatron or at the LHC would be instant evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. Whether such a Higgs boson would be supersymmetric or not it could only be decided after accurate prediction of its properties. Here we compute the decay width of the dominant decay of such a boson, namely H^+ -> t \bar{b}, including the leading electroweak corrections originating from large Yukawa couplings within the MSSM. These electroweak effects turn out to be of comparable size to the O(alpha_s) QCD corrections in relevant portion…
In view of the IceCube's 6-year high-energy starting events (HESE) sample, we revisit the possibility that the updated data may be better explained by a combination of neutrino fluxes from dark matter decay and an isotropic astrophysical power-law than purely by the latter. We find that the combined two-component flux qualitatively improves the fit to the observed data over a purely astrophysical one, and discuss how these updated fits compare against a similar analysis done with the 4-year HESE data. We also update fits involving dark matter decay via multiple channels, without any contributi…
The invariant mass of tau lepton pairs turns out to be smaller than the resonant mass of their mother particle and the invariant mass distribution is stretched wider than the width of the resonant mass as significant fraction of tau lepton momenta are carried away by neutrinos escaping undetected at collider experiments. This paper describes a new approach to reconstruct resonant masses of heavy particles decaying to tau leptons at such experiments. A typical example is a Z or Higgs boson decaying to a tau pair. Although the new technique can be used for each tau lepton separately, I combine t…
The very high energy Galactic $γ$-ray sky is partially opaque in the ($0.1-10$) PeV energy range. In the light of the recently detected high energy neutrino flux by IceCube, a comparable very high energy $γ$-ray flux is expected in any scenario with a sizable Galactic contribution to the neutrino flux. Here we elaborate on the peculiar energy and anisotropy features imposed upon these very high energy $γ$-rays by the absorption on the cosmic microwave background photons and Galactic interstellar light. As a notable application of our considerations, we study the prospects of probing the PeV-sc…
The search for heavy Higgs bosons at the LHC represents an intense experimental program, carried out by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, which includes the hunt for invisible Higgs decays and dark matter candidates. No significant deviations from the SM backgrounds have been observed in any of these searches, imposing significant constraints on the parameter space of different new physics models with an extended Higgs sector. Here we discuss an alternative search strategy for heavy Higgs bosons decaying invisibly at the LHC, focusing on the pair production of a heavy scalar $H$ together with …
Among the several strategies for indirect searches of dark matter, one very promising one is to look for the gamma-rays from decaying dark matter. Here we use the most up-to-date upper bounds on the gamma-ray flux from $10^5$ to $10^{11}$ GeV, obtained from CASA-MIA, KASCADE, KASCADE-Grande, Pierre Auger Observatory, and Telescope Array. We obtain global limits on dark matter lifetime in the range of masses $m_\mathrm{DM}=[10^7-10^{15}]~\mathrm{GeV}$. We provide the bounds for a set of decay channels chosen as representatives. The constraints derived here are new and cover a region of the para…
In this paper we introduce a new approach to study jet substructure in the center-of-mass frame of the jet. We demonstrate that it can be used to discriminate the boosted heavy particles from the QCD jets and the method is complimentary to the existing other jet substructure algorithms. Applications to searches for hadronically decaying W/Z+jets and heavy resonance that decays to a WW final state are also discussed.
This analysis shows a search for dark fermion particles produced in association with a heavy neutral gauge boson (Z$^{\prime}$). The studied events topology are dimuon and a large missing transverse momentum. %We considered the muonic decay of Z$^{\prime}$. The analyzed data were the Open Data collected by the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at the LHC in 2012 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 11.6 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = $ 8 TeV. One benchmark scenario the light vector was used for interpreting the data, based on a simplified model so called the mono-Z$^{\prime}$ model. …
The possibility is discussed to observe the sparticle decay modes of the heavy MSSM Higgs bosons at the Large Hadron Collider. We focus on the heavy neutral Higgses, and argue that their decay into neutralinos may access an interesting region in the MSSM parameter space up to masses around 450 GeV for low and intermediate values of tan beta. If neutralinos and sleptons are light enough, this channel - leading to a four lepton final state topology - can complement the reach of the SM channels.
We present a search for a new heavy vector boson $Z'$ that decays to gluons. Decays to on-shell gluons are suppressed, leading to a dominant decay mode of $Z' \rightarrow g^*g$. We study the case where the off-shell gluon $g^*$ converts to a pair of top quarks, leading to a final state of $t\bar{t}g$. In a sample of events with exactly one charged lepton, large missing transverse momentum and at least five jets, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the CDF II detector, we find the data to be consistent with the standard model. We set upper limits on the produ…
This paper explores the effects of finite width in processes of pair production of an extra heavy quark with charge 2/3 (top partner) and its subsequent decay into a bosonic Dark Matter (DM) candidate -- either scalar or vector -- and SM up-type quarks at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This dynamics has been ignored so far in standard experimental searches of heavy quarks decaying to DM and we assess herein the regions of validity of current approaches, based on the assumption that the extra quarks have a narrow width. Further, we discuss the configurations of masses, widths and couplings wh…
A multitude of searches have already been performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC to probe the heavy Higgses of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) through their decay to the Standard Model particles. In this paper, we study the decay of the MSSM heavy Higgses into neutralino and chargino pairs and estimate the maximum possible branching ratios for these `ino' modes being consistent with the present LHC data. After performing a random scan of the relevant electroweakino parameters, we impose the SM 125 GeV Higgs constraints, low energy flavour data as well as curr…
For a resonance decaying to $τ^+τ^-$, it is difficult to reconstruct its mass accurately because of the presence of neutrinos in the decay products of the $τ$ leptons. If the resonance is heavy enough, we show that its mass can be well determined by the momentum component of the $τ$ decay products perpendicular to the velocity of the $τ$ lepton, $p_{\perp}$, and the mass of the visible/invisible decay products, $m_{vis/inv}$, for $τ$ decaying to hadrons/leptons. By sampling all kinematically allowed values of $p_{\perp}$ and $m_{vis/inv}$ according to their joint probability distributions dete…
This paper explores the effects of finite width in processes of pair production of a heavy eXtra Quark (XQ) with charge 2/3 and its subsequent decay into a Dark Matter (DM) candidate -- either scalar or vector -- and Standard Model (SM) up-type quarks at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This dynamics has been ignored so far in standard experimental searches of heavy quarks decaying to DM and we assess herein the regions of validity of current approaches, based on the assumption that the XQ has a narrow width. Further, we discuss the configurations of masses, widths and couplings where the latt…
If dark matter decays into electrons and positrons, it can affect Galactic radio emissions and the local cosmic ray fluxes. We propose a new, more general analysis of constraints on dark matter. The constraints can be obtained for any decaying dark matter model by convolving the specific dark matter decay spectrum with a response function. We derive this response function from full-sky radio surveys at 408 MHz, 1.42 GHz and 23 GHz, as well as from the positron flux recently reported by PAMELA. We discuss the influence of astrophysical uncertainties on the response function, such as from propag…
In supersymmetry (SUSY) models with low electroweak naturalness (natSUSY), which have been suggested to be the most likely version of SUSY to emerge from the string landscape, higgsinos are expected at the few hundred GeV scale whilst electroweak gauginos inhabit the TeV scale. For TeV-scale heavy neutral SUSY Higgs bosons H and A, as currently required by LHC searches, then the dominant decay modes of H, A are into gaugino plus higgsino provided these decays are kinematically open. The light higgsinos decay to soft particles so are largely invisible whilst the gauginos decay to W, Z or h plus…
There exists an observed "desert" spanning six orders of magnitude between O(0.5) eV and O(0.5) MeV in the fermion mass spectrum. We argue that it might accommodate one or more keV sterile neutrinos as a natural candidate for warm dark matter. To illustrate this point of view, we simply assume that there is one keV sterile neutrino nu_4 and its flavor eigenstate nu_s weakly mixes with three active neutrinos. We clarify different active-sterile neutrino mixing factors for the radiative decay of nu_4 and beta decays in a self-consistent parametrization. A direct detection of this keV sterile neu…
Ultra High Cosmic Rays) made by He-like lightest nuclei might solve the AUGER extragalactic clustering along Cen A. Moreover He like UHECR nuclei cannot arrive from Virgo because the light nuclei fragility and opacity above a few Mpc, explaining the Virgo UHECR absence. UHECR signals are spreading along Cen-A as observed because horizontal galactic arms magnetic fields, bending them on vertical angles. Cen A events by He-like nuclei are deflected as much as the observed clustered ones; proton will be more collimated while heavy (iron) nuclei are too much dispersed. Such a light nuclei UHECR co…
A model independent method to search for particles of unknown masses in events with missing energy is presented. The only assumption is the topology of the decay chain. The method is tested in events with top pairs decaying leptonically with the presence of two neutrinos in the final state. Possible applications are searches for a heavy resonance decaying to top pairs as well as next generation heavy quarks. Similar topologies are predicted by supersymmetric models with R-parity conservation resulting in final states with two invisible neutralinos.

The recent discovery, by the LHCb collaboration, of the $Ξ_{cc}^{++}$ doubly charmed baryon, has renewed interest in the spectroscopy of doubly heavy hadrons. Experimentally, however, searches for such states appear highly challenging. The reconstructed final states tend to involve multiple heavy flavoured (beauty or charm) hadrons, so the yield for any exclusive decay mode will be suppressed to unobservably low levels by the product of several branching fractions, each of which is typically $10^{-3}$--$10^{-2}$. Noting that decays of double beauty hadrons are the only possible source of $B_c^…
We analyse the Lorentz structures of weak decay matrix elements bewteen meson states of arbitrary spin. Simplifications arise in the transition amplitudes for a heavy meson decaying into a light one via a Bethe-Salpeter approach which incorporates heavy quark symmetry. Phenomenological consequences on several semileptonic, nonleptonic and FCNC induced decays of heavy flavoured mesons are derived and discussed.
In the light of the new IceCube data on the (yet unidentified) astrophysical neutrino flux in the PeV and sub-PeV range, we present an update on the status of decaying dark matter interpretation of the events. In particular, we develop further the angular distribution analysis and discuss the perspectives for diagnostics. By performing various statistical tests (maximum likelihood, Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Anderson-Darling tests) we conclude that currently the data show a mild preference (below the two sigma level) for the angular distribution expected from dark matter decay vs. the isotropic di…
A massive particle decaying into neutrinos in the early Universe is known to be less constrained than if it was decaying into other standard model particles. However, even if the decay proceeds into neutrinos, the latter still inevitably emit secondary particles undergoing electromagnetic interactions that can be probed. We analyse in details how sensitive various cosmological probes are to such secondary particles, namely CMB anisotropies, CMB spectral distortions, and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. For relics whose lifetime is shorter than the age of the Universe, this leads to original and strin…
The the initial stage of a relativistic heavy ion collision can be described by a classical color field configuration known as the Glasma. The production of quark pairs from this background field is then computed nonperturbatively by numerically solving the Dirac equation in the classical background. The result seems to point towards an early chemical equilibration of the plasma.
In this study we model early times dynamics of the system produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions by an initial color electric field which then decays to a plasma by the Schwinger mechanism, coupling the dynamical evolution of the initial color field to the dynamics of the many particles system produced by the decay. The latter is described by relativistic kinetic theory in which we fix the ratio $η/s$ rather than insisting on specific microscopic processes. We study isotropization and thermalization of the system produced by the field decay for a static box and for a $1+1$D expanding ge…
We study the possible signals at LHC of the minimal models of decaying dark matter. Those models are characterized by the fact that DM interacts with SM particles through renormalizable coupling with an additional heavier charged state. Such interaction allows to produce a substantial abundance of DM in the early Universe via the decay of the charged heavy state, either in- or out-of-equilibrium. Moreover additional couplings of the charged particle open up decay channels for the DM, which can nevertheless be sufficiently long-lived to be a good DM candidate and within reach of future Indirect…
We explore the effects induced by a finite width in processes of pair production of a heavy top-quark partner and its subsequent decay into a bosonic Dark Matter (DM) candidate -- either scalar or vector -- and a SM up-type quark at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We discuss the configurations of masses, widths and couplings where this phenomenology can be important in a simple model with just one such objects. Finally, we emphasise the correct definition of signal and background to be adopted as well as stress the importance of new dedicated experimental searches.
Production and decay rates, polarization and differential distributions of decay products are calculated for a heavy neutrino produced in charged pseudoscalar meson decay and decaying itself in charged pseudoscalar and lepton or a lepton-antilepton pair of different flavours and a light SM like (anti)neutrino.
We study production and decay of a radion predicted in the Randall-Sundrum model at the LHC. The radion is a scalar particle and its production and decay channels are quite similar to those of the Higgs boson. We find constraints on the model parameter space taking account of the results of the Higgs boson search at the LHC. We also study a possibility discriminating the radion from the scalar particles in the other model such as the supersymmetric standard model at the LHC experiments.
We consider a class of minimal abelian extensions of the Standard Model with an extra neutral gauge boson $Z'$ at the TeV scale. In these scenarios an extended scalar sector and heavy right-handed neutrinos are naturally envisaged. We present some of their striking signatures at the Large Hadron Collider, the most interesting arising from a $Z'$ decaying to heavy neutrino pairs as well as a heavy scalar decaying to two Standard Model Higgses. Using renormalisation group methods, we characterise the high energy behaviours of these extensions and exploit the constraints imposed by the embedding …
We study the jet activity that accompanies the production by gluon fusion of a new physics scalar particle decaying into photons at the LHC. In the considered scenarios, both the production and decay mechanisms are governed by loop-induced interactions involving a heavy colored state. We show that the presence of large new physics contributions to the inclusive diphoton invariant-mass spectrum always implies a significant production rate of non-standard diphoton events containing extra hard jets. We investigate the existence of possible handles that could provide a way to obtain information on…
We investigate the possibility that the Universe is reionized by the decay products of heavy particles. In particular we study under which circumstances this decay may produce a significant reionization at high redshift ($z \simeq 20$), as requested by the WMAP result.Extra sources of reionization at high redshifts increase the recombination rate. As a result, the number density of decaying particles required to produce a high level of ionization at $z \simeq 10-20$ is significantly higher ($\simeq 300$ times) than previously estimated. Moreover, the ionization produced by decay particles impl…
We present the theoretical status of the lifetimes of weakly decaying heavy hadrons containing a bottom or a charm quark, and discuss the current predictions, based on the framework of the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE), for both mesons and baryons. Potential improvements to reduce the theoretical uncertainties are also highlighted.
We propose an explanation of the LSND evidence for electron antineutrino appearance based on neutrino decay. We introduce a heavy neutrino, which is produced in pion and muon decays because of a small mixing with muon neutrinos, and then decays into a scalar particle and a light neutrino, predominantly of the electron type. We require values of $g m_4\sim$ few eV, $g$ being the neutrino--scalar coupling and $m_4$ the heavy neutrino mass, e.g. $m_4$ in the range from 1 keV to 1 MeV and $g \sim 10^{-6} - 10^{-3}$. Performing a fit to the LSND data as well as all relevant null-result experiments,…
