The astrophysical $s$-process is one of the two main processes forming elements heavier than iron. A key outstanding uncertainty surrounding $s$-process nucleosynthesis is the neutron flux generated by the ${}^{22}\mathrm{Ne}(α, n){}^{25}\mathrm{Mg}$ reaction during the He-core and C-shell burning phases of massive stars. This reaction, as well as the competing ${}^{22}\mathrm{Ne}(α, γ){}^{26}\mathrm{Mg}$ reaction, is not well constrained in the important temperature regime from ${\sim} 0.2$--$0.4$~GK, owing to uncertainties in the nuclear properties of resonances lying within the Gamow window. To address these uncertainties, we have performed a new measurement of the ${}^{22}\mathrm{Ne}({}^{6}\mathrm{Li}, d){}^{26}\mathrm{Mg}$ reaction in inverse kinematics, detecting the outgoing deuterons and ${}^{25,26}\mathrm{Mg}$ recoils in coincidence. We have established a new $n / γ$ decay branching ratio of $1.14(26)$ for the key $E_x = 11.32$ MeV resonance in $^{26}\mathrm{Mg}$, which results in a new $(α, n)$ strength for this resonance of $42(11)~μ$eV when combined with the well-established $(α, γ)$ strength of this resonance. We have also determined new upper limits on the $α$ partial widths of neutron-unbound resonances at $E_x = 11.112,$ $11.163$, $11.169$, and $11.171$ MeV. Monte-Carlo calculations of the stellar ${}^{22}\mathrm{Ne}(α, n){}^{25}\mathrm{Mg}$ and ${}^{22}\mathrm{Ne}(α, γ){}^{26}\mathrm{Mg}$ rates, which incorporate these results, indicate that both rates are substantially lower than previously thought in the temperature range from ${\sim} 0.2$--$0.4$~GK.
It has been suggested that a $ν$p process can occur when hot, dense, and proton-rich matter is expanding within a strong flux of anti-neutrinos. In such an environment, proton-rich nuclides can be produced in sequences of proton captures and (n,p) reactions, where the free neutrons are created in situ by $\overlineν_\mathrm{e}+\mathrm{p} \rightarrow \mathrm{n}+\mathrm{e}^+$ reactions. The detailed hydrodynamic evolution determines where the nucleosynthesis path turns off from N = Z line and how far up the nuclear chart it runs. In this work, the uncertainties on the final isotopic abundances s…
Lighter heavy elements beyond iron and up to around silver can form in neutrino-driven ejecta in core-collapse supernovae and neutron star mergers. Slightly neutron-rich conditions favour a weak r-process that follows a path close to stability. Therefore, the beta decays are slow compared to the expansion time scales, and ($α$,n) reactions become critical to move matter towards heavier nuclei. The rates of these reactions are calculated with the statistical model and their main uncertainty, at energies relevant for the weak r-process, is the $α$+nucleus optical potential. There are several set…
We have performed the first direct measurement of two resonances of the $^7$Be($α,γ$)$^{11}$C reaction with unknown strengths using an intense radioactive $^7$Be beam and the DRAGON recoil separator. We report on the first measurement of the 1155 and 1110 keV resonance strengths of $1.73 \pm 0.25(stat.) \pm 0.40(syst.)$ eV and $125 ^{+27}_{-25}(stat.) \pm 15(syst.)$ meV, respectively. The present results have reduced the uncertainty in the $^7$Be($α,γ$)$^{11}$C reaction rate to $\sim$ 9.4-10.7% over T = 1.5-3 GK, which is relevant for nucleosynthesis in the neutrino-driven outflows of core-col…
The thermonuclear $^{30}$P($p,γ$)$^{31}$S reaction rate is critical for modeling the final elemental and isotopic abundances of ONe nova nucleosynthesis, which affect the calibration of proposed nova thermometers and the identification of presolar nova grains, respectively. Unfortunately, the rate of this reaction is essentially unconstrained experimentally, because the strengths of key $^{31}$S proton capture resonance states are not known, largely due to uncertainties in their spins and parities. Using the $β$ decay of $^{31}$Cl, we have observed the $β$-delayed $γ$ decay of a $^{31}$S state…
The cross sections of nuclear reactions between the radioisotope $^7$Be and deuterium, a possible mechanism of reducing the production of mass-7 nuclides in Big-Bang nucleosynthesis, were measured at center-of-mass energies between 0.2 MeV and 1.5 MeV. The measured cross sections are dominated by the $(d,α)$ reaction channel, towards which prior experiments were mostly insensitive. A new resonance at 0.36(5)~MeV with a strength of $ωγ$ = 1.7(5)~keV was observed inside the relevant Gamow window. Calculations of nucleosynthesis outcomes based on the experimental cross section show that the reson…
DT fusion through the $^5$He $3/2+$ "Bretscher state" accounts for $\ge 25\%$ of our existence via nucleosynthesis and for the possibility of fusion energy
A possible mechanism to explain the origin of the light $p$-nuclei in the Galaxy is the nucleosynthesis in the proton-rich neutrino-driven wind ejecta of core-collapse supernovae via the $νp$-process. However this production scenario is very sensitive to the underlying supernova dynamics and the nuclear physics input. As far as the nuclear uncertainties are concerned, the breakout from the $pp$-chains via the $^7$Be($α,γ$)$^{11}$C reaction has been identified as an important link which can influence the nuclear flow and therefore the efficiency of the $νp$-process. However its reaction rate is…
According to sensitivity studies, the $^{38}\mathrm{K}\left( p, γ\right){}^{39}\mathrm{Ca}$ reaction has a significant influence on $\mathrm{Ar}$, $\mathrm{K}$, and $\mathrm{Ca}$ production in classical novae. In order to constrain the rate of this reaction, we have performed a direct measurement of the strengths of three candidate $\ell = 0$ resonances within the Gamow window, at $386 \pm 10~\mathrm{keV}$, $515 \pm 10~\mathrm{keV}$, and $689 \pm 10~\mathrm{keV}$. The experiment was performed in inverse kinematics using a beam of unstable $^{38}\mathrm{K}$ impinged on a windowless $\mathrm{H}_…
A hypothesis is proposed herein, suggesting that a pion-nuclear resonance may be observed in the $α+d\to{}^6\mathrm{Li}(3.563)+π^0$ reaction. The resonance has a $πNNα$ structure, containing $αNN$ and $πNN$ subsystems. The former corresponds to the $A=6$ isotriplet ($^6\mathrm{He}_\text{g.s.}$, $^6\mathrm{Li}(3.563)$, $^6\mathrm{Be}_\text{g.s.}$), whereas the latter is a hypothetical $NN$-decoupled dibaryon. We propose an experiment to search for this resonance using the $^7\mathrm{Li}(p,d)$ reaction.
Rigorous statistical methods for estimating thermonuclear reaction rates and nucleosynthesis are becoming increasingly established in nuclear astrophysics. The main challenge being faced is that experimental reaction rates are highly complex quantities derived from a multitude of different measured nuclear parameters (e.g., astrophysical S-factors, resonance energies and strengths, particle and gamma-ray partial widths). We discuss the application of the Monte Carlo method to two distinct, but related, questions. First, given a set of measured nuclear parameters, how can one best estimate the …
Investigation of $^{31}$P levels near the proton threshold by Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence and the impact on the $^{30}$Si(p,$γ$)$^{31}$P thermonuclear rate
A high-resolution study of the electromagnetic response of $^{206}$Pb below the neutron separation energy is performed using a ($\vecγ$,$γ'$) experiment at the HI$\vecγ$S facility. Nuclear resonance fluorescence with 100% linearly polarized photon beams is used to measure spins, parities, branching ratios, and decay widths of excited states in $^{206}$Pb from $4.9$ to $8.1$MeV. The extracted $Σ$$B$(E1)$\uparrow$ and $Σ$$B$(M1)$\uparrow$ values for the total electric and magnetic dipole strength below the neutron separation energy are 0.9$\pm$0.2e$^2$fm$^2$ and 8.3$\pm$2.0$μ_{N}^2$, respectivel…

We explore the properties of the last generation of $ρ$(770) and $K^*$(892) resonances created in Au+Au reactions at E$_\mathrm{lab}=1.23$~AGeV via the reconstruction in the hadronic channel using the UrQMD model. Such resonance studies allow to obtain detailed information on the emission source in such reactions in a complementary way to di-lepton or HBT studies. We observe a freeze-out hierarchy and predict mass shifts for the $ρ$(770) resonance ($Δm_ρ\approx -330$ MeV) and the $K^*$(892) resonance ($Δm_{K^*} \approx -30$ MeV). These mass shifts are related to the regeneration cycles of each…
The abundances of sodium and oxygen are observed to be anti-correlated in all well-studied globular clusters. Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars undergoing hot bottom burning (HBB) are thought to be prime candidates for producing sodium-rich oxygen-poor material and expelling it into the cluster ISM. The 22Ne(p,gamma)23Na reaction has been shown to strongly influence the amount of 23Na produced during HBB. This reaction is also important for classical novae nucleosynthesis, with sensitivity studies showing that the abundances of several isotopes in the Ne-Al region are significantly altered w…
A self consistent description of angular correlations in neutron induced reactions is required for quantitative analysis of parity violating (PV) and time reversal invariance violating (TRIV) effects in neutron nucleus scattering. The 1.33 eV p-wave compound resonance in $^{117}$Sn is one of the few p-wave resonances where enough measurements have been performed to allow a nontrivial test of the internal consistency of the theory. We present the results of a global analysis of the several different asymmetries and angular distribution measurements in ($n, γ$) reactions on the 1.33 eV p-wave re…
Background: Discrepancies exist between the observed abundances of argon and calcium in oxygen-neon nova ejecta and those predicted by nova models. An improved characterization of the $^{38}$K($p, γ$)$^{39}$Ca reaction rate over the nova temperature regime ($\sim$ 0.1 -- 0.4 GK), and thus the nuclear structure of $^{39}$Ca above the proton threshold (5770.92(63) keV), is necessary to resolve these contradictions. Purpose: The present study was performed to search for low-spin proton resonances in the $^{38}$K $+$ $p$ system, and to improve the uncertainties in energies of the known astrophysic…
We calculate the radiative capture cross section for $^7$Be($α, γ$)$^{11}$C and its reaction rate of relevance for the big bang nucleosynthesis. The impact of this reaction on the primordial $^7$Li abundance is revised including narrow and broad resonances in the pertinent energy region. Our calculations show that it is unlikely that very low energy resonances in $^{11}$C of relevance for the big bang nucleosynthesis would emerge within a two-body potential model. Based on our results and a comparison with previous theoretical and experimental analyses, we conclude that the impact of this reac…
The ${}^{12}\mathrm{C} + {}^{12}\mathrm{C}$ fusion reaction plays a vital role in the explosive phenomena of the universe. The resonances in the Gamow window rule its reaction rate and products. Hence, the determination of the resonance parameters by nuclear models is indispensable as the direct measurement is not feasible. Here, for the first time, we report the resonances in the ${}^{12}\mathrm{C} + {}^{12}\mathrm{C}$ fusion reaction described by a full-microscopic nuclear model. The model plausibly reproduces the measured low-energy astrophysical $S$-factors and predicts the resonances in t…
The study of strange hadronic resonances in pp collisions contributes to the study of strangeness production in small systems. Measurements in pp collisions constitute a reference for the study in larger colliding systems and provide constraints for tuning QCD-inspired event generators. Since the lifetimes of short-lived resonances such as $\mathrm{K}^{*}(892)^{\pm}$ ($τ\sim 4$ fm/\textit{c}) are comparable with the lifetime of the fireball produced in heavy-ion collisions, regeneration and rescattering effects can modify the measured yield, especially at low transverse momentum. The first res…
We present a possible explanation for the deep sub-threshold, $ϕ$ and $Ξ^-$ production yields measured with the HADES experiment in Ar+KCl reactions at $E_{\mathrm{lab}}=1.76$ A GeV and present predictions for Au+Au reactions at $E_{\mathrm{lab}}=1.23$ A GeV. To explain the surprisingly high yields of $ϕ$ and $Ξ^-$ hadrons we propose new decay channels for high mass baryon resonances. These new decay channels are constrained by elementary $\mathrm{p+p}\rightarrow \mathrm{p+p+}ϕ$ cross sections, and $Ξ^-$ production in p+Nb. Based on the fits to the elementary reactions one obtains a satisfacto…
Proton number fluctuation is sensitive observable to search for the QCD critical point in heavy-ion collisions. In this paper, we studied rapidity acceptance dependence of the proton cumulants and correlation functions in most central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 5$ GeV from a microscopic hadronic transport model (JAM). At mid-rapidity, we found the effects of resonance weak decays and hadronic re-scattering on the proton cumulants and correlation functions are small, but those effects get larger when further increasing the rapidity acceptance. On the other hand, we found the ba…
At temperatures below 0.1 GK the $^{19}$F$(p,γ)^{20}$Ne reaction is the only breakout path out of the CNO cycle. Experimental studies of this reaction are challenging from a technical perspective due to copious $γ$-ray background from the far stronger $^{19}$F$(p,α)^{16}$O reaction channel. Here we present the first inverse kinematics study of the $^{19}$F$(p,γ)^{20}$Ne reaction, in which we measure the strength of the 323-keV resonance. We find a strength value of $ωγ= 3.3^{+1.1}_{-0.9}$ meV, which is a factor of two larger than the most recent previous study. The discrepancy is likely the re…
The $\mathrm{^{25}Al(p,γ)^{26}Si}$ reaction is part of a reaction network with impact on the observed galactic $^{26}$Al abundance. A new determination of the proton strength of the lowest $\ell=0$ proton-resonance in $^{26}$Si is required to more precisely calculate the thermal reaction rate. To this end, the $\mathrm{^{25}Al(d,n)^{26}Si}$ proton-transfer reaction is measured in inverse kinematics using an in-flight radioactive beam at the RESOLUT facility. Excitation energies of the lowest $^{26}$Si proton resonances are measured and cross sections are determined for the lowest $\ell=0$ reso…
The production of $^7$Be and $^7$Li nuclei plays an important role in primordial nucleosynthesis, nuclear astrophysics, and fusion energy generation. The $^3\mathrm{He}(α, γ) ^7\mathrm{Be}$ and $^3\mathrm{H}(α, γ) ^7\mathrm{Li}$ radiative-capture processes are important to determine the $^7$Li abundance in the early universe and to predict the correct fraction of pp-chain branches resulting in $^7$Be versus $^8$B neutrinos. In this work we study the properties of $^7$Be and $^7$Li within the no-core shell model with continuum (NCSMC) method, using chiral nucleon-nucleon interactions as the onl…

We report on the mass measurements of several neutron-rich $\mathrm{Rb}$ and $\mathrm{Sr}$ isotopes in the $A \approx 100$ region with the TITAN Penning-trap mass spectrometer. Using highly charged ions in the charge state $q=10+$, the masses of $^{98,99}\mathrm{Rb}$ and $^{98-100}\mathrm{Sr}$ have been determined with a precision of $6 - 12\ \mathrm{keV}$, making their uncertainty negligible for r-process nucleosynthesis network calculations. The mass of $^{101}\mathrm{Sr}$ has been determined directly for the first time with a precision eight times higher than the previous indirect measureme…

Globular clusters are dense aggregates of stars that evolve in relative isolation. For the better part of $40$ years these clusters have been known to possess unique chemical signatures called abundance anomalies. Recent observations have found these abundance anomalies to be the result of distinct stellar populations with the youngest population undergoing an unknown enrichment process. Understanding these chemical signatures requires a precise understanding of the thermonuclear reaction rates at relatively low temperatures. At these low temperatures reaction rates suffer from large uncertain…
