A person ontology comprising concepts, attributes and relationships of people has a number of applications in data protection, didentification, population of knowledge graphs for business intelligence and fraud prevention. While artificial neural networks have led to improvements in Entity Recognition, Entity Classification, and Relation Extraction, creating an ontology largely remains a manual process, because it requires a fixed set of semantic relations between concepts. In this work, we present a system for automatically populating a person ontology graph from unstructured data using neural models for Entity Classification and Relation Extraction. We introduce a new dataset for these tasks and discuss our results.
We present a new approach to dialogue specification for Virtual Personal Assistants (VPAs) based on so-called dialogue workflow graphs, with several demonstrated advantages over current ontology-based methods. Our new dialogue specification language (DSL) enables customers to more easily participate in the VPA modeling process due to a user-friendly modeling framework. Resulting models are also significantly more compact. VPAs can be developed much more rapidly. The DSL is a new modeling layer on top of our ontology-based Dialogue Management (DM) framework OntoVPA. We explain the rationale and…

Populating ontology graphs represents a long-standing problem for the Semantic Web community. Recent advances in translation-based graph embedding methods for populating instance-level knowledge graphs lead to promising new approaching for the ontology population problem. However, unlike instance-level graphs, the majority of relation facts in ontology graphs come with comprehensive semantic relations, which often include the properties of transitivity and symmetry, as well as hierarchical relations. These comprehensive relations are often too complex for existing graph embedding methods, and …

Ontologies comprising of concepts, their attributes, and relationships are used in many knowledge based AI systems. While there have been efforts towards populating domain specific ontologies, we examine the role of document structure in learning ontological relationships between concepts in any document corpus. Inspired by ideas from hypernym discovery and explainability, our method performs about 15 points more accurate than a stand-alone R-GCN model for this task.

There is a relatively small amount of research covering urban freight movements. Most research dealing with the subject of urban mobility focuses on passenger vehicles, not commercial vehicles hauling freight. However, in many ways, urban freight transport contributes to congestion, air pollution, noise, accident and more fuel consumption which raises logistic costs, and hence the price of products. The main focus of this paper is to propose a new solution for congestion in order to improve the distribution process of goods in urban areas and optimize transportation cost, time of delivery, fue…

In many modern day systems such as information extraction and knowledge management agents, ontologies play a vital role in maintaining the concept hierarchies of the selected domain. However, ontology population has become a problematic process due to its nature of heavy coupling with manual human intervention. With the use of word embeddings in the field of natural language processing, it became a popular topic due to its ability to cope up with semantic sensitivity. Hence, in this study, we propose a novel way of semi-supervised ontology population through word embeddings as the basis. We bu…
Our food preferences guide our food choices and in turn affect our personal health and our social life. In this paper, we adopt an approach using a domain ontology expressed in OWL2 to support the acquisition and representation of preferences in formalism CP-Net. Specifically, we present the construction of the domain ontology and questionnaire design to acquire and represent the preferences. The acquisition and representation of preferences are implemented in the field of university canteen. Our main contribution in this preliminary work is to acquire preferences and enrich the model preferab…
In this paper we discuss various problems, associated to temporal phenomena. These problems include persistence and change, the integration of objects and processes, and truth-makers for temporal propositions. We propose an approach which interprets persistence as a phenomenon emanating from the activity of the mind, and which, additionally, postulates that persistence, finally, rests on personal identity. The General Formal Ontology (GFO) is a top level ontology being developed at the University of Leipzig. Top level ontologies can be roughly divided into 3D-ontologies, and 4D-ontologies. GFO…

This paper addresses ontology and ethics of an AI agent called digital me. We define digital me as autonomous, decision-making, and learning agent, representing an individual and having practically immortal own life. It is assumed that digital me is equipped with the big-five personality model, ensuring that it provides a model of some aspects of a strong AI: consciousness, free will, and intentionality. As computer-based personality judgments are more accurate than those made by humans, digital me can judge the personality of the individual represented by the digital me, other individuals' pe…

In the presence of inconsistencies, repair techniques thrive to restore consistency by reasoning with several repairs. However, since the number of repairs can be large, standard inconsistent tolerant semantics usually yield few answers. In this paper, we use the notion of syntactic distance between repairs following the intuition that it can allow us to cluster some repairs "close" to each other. In this way, we propose a generic framework to answer queries in a more personalise fashion.

Event Detection (ED) aims to identify event trigger words from a given text and classify it into an event type. Most of current methods to ED rely heavily on training instances, and almost ignore the correlation of event types. Hence, they tend to suffer from data scarcity and fail to handle new unseen event types. To address these problems, we formulate ED as a process of event ontology population: linking event instances to pre-defined event types in event ontology, and propose a novel ED framework entitled OntoED with ontology embedding. We enrich event ontology with linkages among event ty…

Enterprise knowledge is a key asset in the competing and fast-changing corporate landscape. The ability to learn, store and distribute implicit and explicit knowledge can be the difference between success and failure. While enterprise knowledge management is a well-defined research domain, current implementations lack orientation towards small and medium enterprise. We propose a semantic search engine for relevant documents in an enterprise, based on automatic generated domain ontologies. In this paper we focus on the component for ontology learning and population.

Background: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), a set of negative events and processes that a person might encounter during childhood and adolescence, have been proven to be linked to increased risks of a multitude of negative health outcomes and conditions when children reach adulthood and beyond. Objective: To better understand the relationship between ACEs and their relevant risk factors with associated health outcomes and to eventually design and implement preventive interventions, access to an integrated coherent dataset is needed. Therefore, we implemented a formal ontology as a resour…
Ontology-based approach to the Natural Language Understanding (NLU) processing allows to improve questions answering quality in dialogue systems. We describe our NLU engine architecture and evaluate its implementation. The engine transforms user input into the SPARQL SELECT, ASK or INSERT query to the knowledge graph provided by the ontology-based data virtualization platform. The transformation is based on the lexical level of the knowledge graph built according to the Ontolex ontology. The described approach can be applied for graph data population tasks and to the question answering systems…

A new natural language understanding method for disambiguation of difficult pronouns is described. Difficult pronouns are those pronouns for which a level of world or domain knowledge is needed in order to perform anaphoral or other types of resolution. Resolution of difficult pronouns may in some cases require a prior step involving the application of inference to a situation that is represented by the natural language text. A general method is described: it performs entity resolution and pronoun resolution. An extension to the general pronoun resolution method performs inference as an embedd…

Today is the era of intelligence in machines. With the advances in Artificial Intelligence, machines have started to impersonate different human traits, a chatbot is the next big thing in the domain of conversational services. A chatbot is a virtual person who is capable to carry out a natural conversation with people. They can include skills that enable them to converse with the humans in audio, visual, or textual formats. Artificial intelligence conversational entities, also called chatbots, conversational agents, or dialogue system, are an excellent example of such machines. Obtaining the r…
How people think, feel, and behave, primarily is a representation of their personality characteristics. By being conscious of personality characteristics of individuals whom we are dealing with or decided to deal with, one can competently ameliorate the relationship, regardless of its type. With the rise of Internet-based communication infrastructures (social networks, forums, etc.), a considerable amount of human communications take place there. The most prominent tool in such communications, is the language in written and spoken form that adroitly encodes all those essential personality char…
One primary task of population health analysis is the identification of risk factors that, for some subpopulation, have a significant association with some health condition. Examples include finding lifestyle factors associated with chronic diseases and finding genetic mutations associated with diseases in precision health. We develop a combined semantic and machine learning system that uses a health risk ontology and knowledge graph (KG) to dynamically discover risk factors and their associated subpopulations. Semantics and the novel supervised cadre model make our system explainable. Future …

Distributed ledger systems have become more prominent and successful in recent years, with a focus on blockchains and cryptocurrency. This has led to various misunderstandings about both the technology itself and its capabilities, as in many cases blockchain and cryptocurrency is used synonymously and other applications are often overlooked. Therefore, as a whole, the view of distributed ledger technology beyond blockchains and cryptocurrencies is very limited. Existing vocabularies and ontologies often focus on single aspects of the technology, or in some cases even just on one product. This …
Clinical factors account only for a small portion, about 10-30%, of the controllable factors that affect an individual's health outcomes. The remaining factors include where a person was born and raised, where he/she pursued their education, what their work and family environment is like, etc. These factors are collectively referred to as Social Determinants of Health (SDoH). The majority of SDoH data is recorded in unstructured clinical notes by physicians and practitioners. Recording SDoH data in a structured manner (in an EHR) could greatly benefit from a dedicated ontology of SDoH terms. O…
With the rapid advancements in cancer research, the information that is useful for characterizing disease, staging tumors, and creating treatment and survivorship plans has been changing at a pace that creates challenges when physicians try to remain current. One example involves increasing usage of biomarkers when characterizing the pathologic prognostic stage of a breast tumor. We present our semantic technology approach to support cancer characterization and demonstrate it in our end-to-end prototype system that collects the newest breast cancer staging criteria from authoritative oncology …
Human activity and environment produces sounds such as, at home, the noise produced by water, cough, or television. These sounds can be used to determine the activity in the environment. The objective is to monitor a person's activity or determine his environment using a single low cost microphone by sound analysis. The purpose is to adapt programs to the activity or environment or detect abnormal situations. Some patterns of over expressed repeatedly in the sequences of recognized sounds inter and intra environment allow to characterize activities such as the entrance of a person in the house…

Cold start knowledge base population (KBP) is the problem of populating a knowledge base from unstructured documents. While artificial neural networks have led to significant improvements in the different tasks that are part of KBP, the overall F1 of the end-to-end system remains quite low. This problem is more acute in personal knowledge bases, which present additional challenges with regard to data protection, fairness and privacy. In this work, we present a system that uses rule based annotators and a graph neural network for missing link prediction, to populate a more complete, fair and di…
Recent progress in artificial intelligence through reinforcement learning (RL) has shown great success on increasingly complex single-agent environments and two-player turn-based games. However, the real-world contains multiple agents, each learning and acting independently to cooperate and compete with other agents, and environments reflecting this degree of complexity remain an open challenge. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time that an agent can achieve human-level in a popular 3D multiplayer first-person video game, Quake III Arena Capture the Flag, using only pixels and game p…
