We investigate the radiation from a bunch of relativistic electrons moving along the cylindrical waveguide axis, assuming that the waveguide is partially loaded by a medium with periodic dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. The spectral distribution of the radiation energy flux through the cross section of the waveguide is studied at large distances from the medium. The analysis is based on the corresponding exact solution of Maxwell equations for the case of a single electron moving along the waveguide axis. The results of numerical calculations are presented in the special case of layered medium consisting of a finite number of dielectric plates separated by vacuum gaps. We show that under certain conditions on the problem parameters the quasi-coherent Cherenkov radiation generated by the electron bunch inside the plates is self-amplified at certain waveguide modes. A visual explanation of this phenomenon is provided that reproduces the main features to rather good accuracy.
We report the experimental generation, acceleration and characterization of a uniformly-filled electron bunch obtained via space-charge-driven expansion (often referred to as "blow-out regime") in an L-band (1.3-GHz) radiofrequency photoinjector. The beam is photoemitted from a Cesium-Telluride semiconductor photocathode using a short ($<200$ fs) ultraviolet laser pulse. The produced electron bunches are characterized with conventional diagnostics and the signatures of their ellipsoidal character is observed. We especially demonstrate the production of ellipsoidal bunches with charges up to $\…
The paper presents the results of numerical PIC-simulation of accelerated and drive bunches dynamics in a dielectric waveguide filled with radially inhomogeneous plasma. The wakefield was excited by the electron bunch in a quartz (permittivity 3.75) dielectric tube with outer and inner diameters of 1.2 mm and 1.0 mm, respectively, which was nested into a cylindrical metallic waveguide. The drive bunch characteristics were chosen to be: 5 GeV for electron energy, 3 nC for the charge, 0.2 mm - the bunch length, 0.9 mm - the bunch diameter. The accelerated bunch had the same parameters, except fo…
Linear theory of the parametric beam instability or the self-amplification of parametric x-ray radiation (PXR) from relativistic electrons in a crystal is considered taking into account finite emittance of the electron beam and absorption of the radiation. It is shown that these factors change essentially the estimation of threshold parameters of the electron bunches for the coherent X-ray generation. The boundary conditions for the linear theory of the effect is analyzed in details and it is shown that the grazing incidence diffraction geometry is optimal for the growth of instability. Numeri…
A linear theory of a wakefield excitation in a plasma-dielectric accelerating structure by a drive electron bunch in the case of an off-axis bunch injection has been constructed. The structure under investigation is a round dielectric-loaded metal waveguide with a channel for the charged particles, filled with homogeneous cold plasma. Derived theory was used to investigate numerically the spatial distribution of the bunch-excited wakefield components, which act on both the drive and witness bunches.
We analyze the electromagnetic field of a bunch that moves uniformly in a circular metal waveguide and crosses a boundary between a vacuum area and an area filled with an anisotropic dispersive nonmagnetic medium. The medium is characterized by the diagonal dielectric permittivity tensor with components possessing frequency dispersion of plasma types. The investigation of the waveguide mode components is performed with the methods of the complex variable function theory. It is shown that in compliance with the parameters of the medium, Cherenkov radiation (CR) generated in the filled area of t…
X-ray radiation of relativistic electrons passing through the crystal lattice (in case of channeling radiation) requires electrons with energies just from tens up to hundreds MeV, but has a drawback: low number of emitted X-ray quanta. However, the brightness of such a source could be potentially increased if the current density of the electron bunch is high enough to initiate the self amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) process. The conditions at which this phenomenon could take place for the case of axial channeling are analyzed in the present paper within the first order perturbation theo…
The paper presents the results of numerical PIC-simulation of positron bunch focusing when acceleration in a plasma dielectric wakefield accelerator. The wakefield was excited by drive electron bunch in quartz dielectric tube, embedded in cylindrical metal waveguide. The internal area of dielectric tube has been filled with radially homogeneous plasma having in general case the vacuum channel along waveguide axis. Results of numerical PIC simulation have shown that it is possible a simultaneous acceleration and focusing of test positron bunch in the wakefield. The dependence of transport and a…
We analyze the electromagnetic field of a small bunch that uniformly moves in a circular waveguide and transverses a boundary between an area filled up with cold magnetized electron plasma and a vacuum area. The magnetic field is supposed to be strong but finite so the perturbation technique can be applied. Two cases are studied in detail: the bunch is flying out of the plasma into a vacuum, and, inversely, the bunch is flying into the plasma out of the vacuum area of waveguide. The investigation of the waveguide mode components is performed analytically with methods of the complex variable fu…

In the presence of an active medium incorporated in a Penning trap, the moving electrons can become bunched, as they get enough energy, they escape the trap forming an optical injector. These bunched electrons can enter next PASER section filled with the same active medium to be accelerated. In this paper, electron dynamics in the presence of gas mixture active medium incorporated in a penning trap is analyzed by developing an idealized 1D model. We further evaluate the energy exchange occurring as the train of electrons traversing the next PASER section. The results show that the oscillating …
We outline the fundamental coherent radiation emission processes from a bunched charged particles beam. In contrast to spontaneous emission of radiation from a random electron beam that is proportional to the number of particles, a pre-bunched electron beam can emit spontaneously coherent radiation proportional to the number of particles - squared, through the process of (spontaneous) superradiance (SP-SR) (in the sense of Dicke's). The coherent SP-SR emission of a bunched electron beam can be even further enhanced by a process of stimulated-superradiance (ST-SR) in the presence of a seed inje…
High-brightness electron bunches, such as those generated and accelerated in free-electron lasers (FELs), can develop small-scale structure in the longitudinal phase space. This causes variations in the slice energy spread and current profile of the bunch which then undergo amplification, in an effect known as the microbunching instability. By imposing energy spread modulations on the bunch in the low-energy section of an accelerator, using an undulator and a modulated laser pulse in the centre of a dispersive chicane, it is possible tomanipulate the bunch longitudinal phase space. This allows…

The resonance Cherenkov radiation generated from a train of equally-spaced unidimensional electron bunches travelling along the axis of a hollow channel inside an infinite cylindrical waveguide filled with (weakly dispersing) transparent dielectric has been investigated. It was shown that its excitation might be stimulated at a large number of neighboring modes of the waveguide. A visual explanation of this effect is given and the possibility of its observation in the range of terahertz radiation is discussed.
Self-seeding schemes, consisting of two undulators with a monochromator in between, aim at reducing the bandwidth of SASE X-ray FELs. We recently proposed to use a new method of monochromatization exploiting a single crystal in Bragg-transmission geometry for self-seeding in the hard X-ray range. Here we consider a possible extension of this method to the soft X-ray range using a cell filled with resonantly absorbing gas as monochromator. The transmittance spectrum in the gas exhibits an absorbing resonance with narrow bandwidth. Then, similarly to the hard X-ray case, the temporal waveform of…
We consider a possibilty to use an echelon of mutually coherent laser pulses generated by the emerging CAN (Coherent Amplification Network) technology for direct particle acceleration in periodic plasma structures. The plasma structure survives a single shot only. However, due to it's simplicity and projected very low production costs, the structure can be replaced for every laser shot at a kiloherz repetition rate. We discuss resonant and free streaming configurations. The resonant plasma structures can trap energy of longer laser pulses but are limited to moderate laser intensities of about …
Modern x-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) produce x-ray pulses of exceptional transverse coherence. This is due largely to the process of optical guiding by which the radiation is both refractively guided by the bunched electron beam and gain guided by the preferential amplification of on-axis radiation. These effects may be summarized by an effective index of refraction, which has been used in the past to study the transverse dynamics of the FEL process with significant simplifications and approximations, but never fully self-consistently. We present here a self-consistent method for studying…
