We propose a unifying general (i.e. not assuming the mapping to have any particular structure) view on the theory of regularity and clarify the relationships between the existing primal and dual quantitative sufficient and necessary conditions including their hierarchy. We expose the typical sequence of regularity assertions, often hidden in the proofs, and the roles of the assumptions involved in the assertions, in particular, on the underlying space: general metric, normed, Banach or Asplund. As a consequence, we formulate primal and dual conditions for the stability properties of solution mappings to inclusions
In this work, we use the theory of error bounds to study metric regularity of the sum of two multifunctions, as well as some important properties of variational systems. We use an approach based on the metric regularity of epigraphical multifunctions. Our results subsume some recent results by Durea and Strugariu.
The paper is devoted to the development of new sufficient conditions for the calmness and the Aubin property of implicit multifunctions. As the basic tool one employs the directional limiting coderivative which, together with the graphical derivative, enable us a fine analysis of the local behavior of the investigated multifunction along relevant directions. For verification of the calmness property, in addition, a new condition has been discovered which parallels the missing implicit function paradigm and permits us to replace the original multifunction by a substantially simpler one. Moreove…
The present paper contains some investigations about a uniform variant of the notion of metric hemiregularity, the latter being a less explored property obtained by weakening metric regularity. The introduction of such a quantitative stability property for set-valued mappings is motivated by applications to the penalization of constrained optimization problems, through the notion of problem calmness. As a main result, an implicit multifunction theorem for parameterized inclusion problems is established, which measures the uniform hemiregularity of the related solution mapping in terms of probl…
The paper deals with an extension of the available theory of SCD (subspace containing derivatives) mappings to mappings between spaces of different dimensions. This extension enables us to derive workable sufficient conditions for the isolated calmness of implicitly defined multifunctions around given reference points. This stability property differs substantially from isolated calmness at a point and, possibly in conjunction with the Aubin property, offers a new useful stability concept. The application area includes a broad class of parameterized generalized equations, where the respective c…
In this paper, we study relative metric regularity of set-valued mappings with emphasis on directional metric regularity. We establish characterizations of relative metric regularity without assuming the completeness of the image spaces, by using the relative lower semicontinuous envelopes of the distance functions to set-valued mappings. We then apply these characterizations to establish a coderivative type criterion for directional metric regularity as well as for the robustness of metric regularity.
This paper sheds new light on regularity of multifunctions through various characterizations of directional Hölder /Lipschitz metric regularity, which are based on the concepts of slope and coderivative. By using these characterizations, we show that directional Hölder /Lipschitz metric regularity is stable, when the multifunction under consideration is perturbed suitably. Applications of directional Hölder /Lipschitz metric regularity to investigate the stability and the sensitivity analysis of parameterized optimization problems are also discussed.
In this paper we aim to present two general results regarding, on one hand, the openness stability of set-valued maps and, on the other hand, the metric regularity behavior of the implicit multifunction related to a generalized variational system. Then, these results are applied in order to obtain, in a natural way, and in a widely studied case, several relations between the metric regularity moduli of the field maps defining the variational system and the solution map. Our approach allows us to complete and extend several very recent results in literature.
This article is devoted to the analysis of necessary and/or sufficient conditions for metric regularity in terms of Demyanov-Rubinov-Polyakova quasidifferentials. We obtain new necessary and sufficient conditions for the local metric regularity of a multifunction in terms of quasidifferentials of the distance function to this multifunction. We also propose a new MFCQ-type constraint qualification for a parametric system of quasidifferentiable equality and inequality constraints and prove that it ensures the metric regularity of a multifunction associated with this system. As an application, we…
The paper deals with a comprehensive theory of mappings, whose local behavior can be described by means of linear subspaces, contained in the graphs of two (primal and dual) generalized derivatives. This class of mappings includes the graphically Lipschitzian mappings and thus a number of multifunctions, frequently arising in optimization and equilibrium problems. The developed theory makes use of own generalized derivatives, provides us with some calculus rules and reveals a number of interesting connections. In particular, it enables us to construct a modification of the semismooth* Newton m…
In the present paper, several properties concerning generalized derivatives of multifunctions implicitly defined by set-valued inclusions are studied by techniques of variational analysis. Set-valued inclusions are problems formalizing the robust fulfilment of cone constraint systems, whose data are affected by a "crude knowledge" of uncertain elements, so they can not be casted in traditional generalized equations. The focus of this study in on the first-order behaviour of the solution mapping associated with a parameterized set-valued inclusion, starting with Lipschitzian properties and then…
In these notes, we present a general result concerning the Lipschitz regularity of a certain type of set-valued maps often found in constrained optimization and control problems. The class of multifunctions examined in this paper is characterized by means of a set of Lipschitz continuous constraint functions defined on some Lipschitz manifold. The proof of the regularity result for this class of multifunctions is based on a quantitative version of the Implicit Function Theorem for Lipschitzian maps which provides estimates for the neighborhoods where the implicit map can be defined.
The paper studies coincidence points of parameterized set-valued mappings (multifunctions), which provide an extended framework to cover several important topics in variational analysis and optimization that include the existence of solutions of parameterized generalized equations, implicit function and fixed-point theorems, optimal value functions in parametric optimization, etc. Using the advanced machinery of variational analysis and generalized differentiation that furnishes complete characterizations of well-posedness properties of multifunctions, we establish a general theorem ensuring t…
In the paper a new sufficient condition for the Aubin property to a class of parameterized variational systems is derived. In these systems the constraints depend both on the parameter as well as on the decision variable itself and they include, e.g., parameter-dependent quasi-variational inequalities and implicit complementarity problems. The result is based on a general condition ensuring the Aubin property of implicitly defined multifunctions which employs the recently introduced notion of the directional limiting coderivative. Our final condition can be verified, however, without an explic…
The minimum time function $T(\cdot)$ of smooth control systems is known to be locally semiconcave provided Petrov's controllability condition is satisfied. Moreover, such a regularity holds up to the boundary of the target under an inner ball assumption. We generalize this analysis to differential inclusions, replacing the above hypotheses with the continuity of $T(\cdot)$ near the target, and an inner ball property for the multifunction associated with the dynamics. In such a weakened set-up, we prove that the hypograph of $T(\cdot)$ satisfies, locally, an exterior sphere condition. As is wel…
In this paper we develop efficient first-order algorithms for the generalized trust-region subproblem (GTRS), which has applications in signal processing, compressed sensing, and engineering. Although the GTRS, as stated, is nonlinear and nonconvex, it is well-known that objective value exactness holds for its SDP relaxation under a Slater condition. While polynomial-time SDP-based algorithms exist for the GTRS, their relatively large computational complexity has motivated and spurred the development of custom approaches for solving the GTRS. In particular, recent work in this direction has de…
Metric regularity has emerged during last 2-3 decades as one of the central concepts of variational analysis. The roots of this concept go back to a circle of fundamental regularity ideas of classical analysis embodied in such results as the implicit function theorem, Banach open mapping theorem, theorems of Lyusternik and Graves, on the one hand, and the Sard theorem and the Thom-Smale transversality theory, on the other. The three principal themes that are in the focus of attention are: (a) regularity criteria (containing quantitative estimates for rates of regularity) including formal compa…
We prove an abstract Nash-Moser implicit function theorem which, when applied to control and Cauchy problems for PDEs in Sobolev class, is sharp in terms of the loss of regularity of the solution of the problem with respect to the data. The proof is a combination of: (i) the iteration scheme by Hörmander (ARMA 1976), based on telescoping series, and very close to the original one by Nash; (ii) a suitable way of splitting series in scales of Banach spaces, inspired by a simple, clever trick used in paradifferential calculus (for example, by Métivier). As an example of application, we apply our …
We consider a numerical approximation of a linear quadratic control problem constrained by the stochastic heat equation with non-homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. This involves a combination of distributed and boundary control, as well as both distributed and boundary noise. We apply the finite element method for the spatial discretization and the linear implicit Euler method for the temporal discretization. Due to the low regularity induced by the boundary noise, convergence orders above 1/2 in space and 1/4 in time cannot be expected. We prove such optimal convergence orders for our f…
