At room temperature, the quantum contribution to the kinetic energy of a water molecule exceeds the classical contribution by an order of magnitude. The quantum kinetic energy (QKE) of a water molecule is modulated by its local chemical environment and leads to uneven partitioning of isotopes between different phases in thermal equilibrium, which would not occur if the nuclei behaved classically. In this work, we use ab initio path integral simulations to show that QKEs of the water molecules and the equilibrium isotope fractionation ratios of the oxygen and hydrogen isotopes are sensitive probes of the hydrogen bonding structures in aqueous ionic solutions. In particular, we demonstrate how the QKE of water molecules in path integral simulations can be decomposed into translational, rotational and vibrational degrees of freedom, and use them to determine the impact of solvation on different molecular motions. By analyzing the QKEs and isotope fractionation ratios, we show how the addition of the Na$^+$, Cl$^-$ and HPO$_4^{2-}$ ions perturbs the competition between quantum effects in liquid water and impacts their local solvation structures.
In the course of our investigations of the adsorption of ions to the air-water interface, we previously reported the surprising result that doubly-charged carbonate anions exhibit a stronger surface affinity than do singly-charged bicarbonate anions. In contrast to monovalent, weakly hydrated anions, which generally show enhanced concentrations in the interfacial region, multivalent (and strongly hydrated) anions are expected to show much weaker surface propensity. In the present work, we use resonantly enhanced deep-UV second harmonic generation spectroscopy to measure the Gibbs free energy o…
New ionic liquids (ILs) are continuously introduced involving an increasing number of organic and inorganic ions. Amino acid based ILs (AAILs) represent a specific interest due to their natural origin and, allegedly, low cost. We apply our recently developed force field for imidazolium-based AAILs to investigate structure properties in their aqueous solutions via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. By reporting cluster analysis, radial distribution functions and spatial distribution functions, we argue that AAIL ions are well dispersed in the aqueous media, irrespective of the AAIL content. A…
Metal nanoparticles are receiving increased scientific attention owing to their unique physical and chemical properties that make them suitable for a wide range of applications in diverse fields, such as electrochemistry, biochemistry, and nanomedicine. Their high metallic polarizability is a crucial determinant that defines their electrostatic character in various electrolyte solutions. Here, we introduce a continuum-based model of a metal nanoparticle with explicit polarizability in the presence of different kinds of electrolytes. We employ several, variously sophisticated, theoretical appro…
Aqueous rechargeable batteries are promising energy storage devices for the high safety, environmental friendliness, and easy assembly. However, their cycle stability and low temperature performance are limited by the narrow electrochemical stability window and the high freezing point of the aqueous electrolytes. Here, a hybrid electrolyte with a wide electrochemical window (2.15V) and a low freezing point (-60 oC) is developed by using EMIMDep as a novel additive. The hydrophobic EMIM+ accumulates on the negatively charged electrode and repels the water molecules, thus suppressing the water s…
The heterogeneous oxidation reaction of single aqueous ascorbic acid (AH$_2$) aerosol particles with gas-phase ozone was investigated in this study utilizing aerosol optical tweezers with Raman spectroscopy. The measured liquid-phase bimolecular rate coefficients of the AH$_2$ + O$_3$ reaction exhibit a significant pH dependence, and the corresponding values at ionic strength 0.2 M are $(3.1 \pm 2.0) \times 10^5$ M$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ and $(1.2 \pm 0.6) \times 10^7$ M$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ for pH $\approx$ 2 and 6, respectively. These results measured in micron-sized droplets agree with those from previou…
Through molecular dynamics simulations considering thermal vibration of surface atoms, ionic behaviors in concentrated NaCl solutions confined between discretely charged silicon surfaces have been investigated. The electric double layer structure was found sensitive to the density and distribution of surface charges. Due to the surface charge discreteness, slight charge inversion appeared which depended on the surface charge density, bulk concentration and confinement. In the nanoconfined NaCl solutions differently concentrated from 0.2 M to 4.0 M, the locations of accumulation layers for Na+ …
Aqueous solutions of amino acid ionic liquids (AAILs) are of high importance for applications in protein synthesis and solubilization, enzymatic reactions, templates for synthetic study, etc. This work employs molecular dynamics simulations using our own force field to investigate shear viscosity and cluster compositions of three 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium (emim) amino acid salts: [emim][ala], [emim][met], and [emim][trp] solutions (2, 5, 10, 20, 30 mol%) in water at 310 K. We, for the first time, establish simple correlations between cluster composition, on one side, and viscosity, on anothe…
Lithium chloride LiCl is widely used as a prototype system to study the strongly dissociated 1-1 electrolyte solution. Here, we combined experimental measurements and classical molecular dynamics simulations to study the ion conduction in this system. Ionic conductivities were reported at both 20$^\circ$C and 50$^\circ$C from experiments and compared to results from molecular dynamics simulations. The main finding of this work is that transference numbers of Li$^+$ and Cl$^-$ become comparable at high concentration. This phenomenon is independent of the force fields employed in the simulation …
Tasker type III polar terminations of ionic crystals carry a net surface charge as well as a dipole moment and are fundamentally unstable. In contact with electrolytes, such polar surfaces can be stabilized by adsorption of counter ions from solution to form electric double layers (EDLs). In a previous work (J. Chem. Phys 147, 104702 (2017)) we reported on a classical force field based molecular dynamics study of a prototype model system namely a NaCl(111) slab interfaced with an aqueous NaCl solution on both sides. A serious hurdle in the simulation is that the finite width of the slab admits…
Using molecular dynamics simulations, the structure of model mini-protein was thoroughly characterized in the imidazolium-based amino acid ionic liquids and their aqueous solutions. We report that the mini-protein is more stable when AAIL is added as a cosolvent. Complete substitution of water by organic cations and anions further results in hindered conformational flexibility of the mini-protein. This observation suggests that AAILs are able to defend proteins from thermally induced denaturation. We show by means of radial distributions that the mini-protein is efficiently solvated by both so…
A recent version of statistical associating fluid theory (SAFT), namely SAFT2, is coupled with the van der Waals and Platteeuw theory to study the alkane hydrate phase equilibrium conditions. The model is found to provide an accurate representation of the alkane hydrate dissociation conditions with and without inhibitors, such as salts, alcohols, as well as mixed salts and alcohol. Based on SAFT2, a heterosegmented SAFT equation of state is developed to model the thermodynamic properties of aqueous ionic liquid (IL) solutions, which is recently discovered as dual function gas hydrate inhibitor…
Ionic thermoelectrics show great potential in low-grade heat harvesting and thermal sensing owing to their ultrahigh thermopower, low cost and ease in production. However, the lack of effective n-type ionic thermoelectric materials seriously hinders their applications. Here, we report giant and bidirectionally tunable thermopowers within an ultrawide range from -23 to +32 mV K-1 at 90% RH in solid ionic-liquid-based ionogels, rendering it among the best n- and p-type ionic thermoelectric materials. A novel thermopower regulation strategy through ion doping to selectively induce ion aggregates …
The adsorption kinetics of the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide at the air-water interface has been studied by the maximum bubble pressure method at concentrations below the critical micellar concentration. At short times, the adsorption is diffusion-limited. At longer times, the surface tension shows an intermediate plateau and can no longer be accounted for by a diffusion limited process. Instead, adsorption appears kinetically controlled and slowed down by an adsorption barrier. A Poisson-Boltzmann theory for the electrostatic repulsion from the surface does not fully ac…
In concentrated solutions of NaClO4 and Na2SO4, the quantum yield for free electron generated by detachment from photoexcited anions (such as I-, OH-, ClO^4-, and [SO3]^2-) linearly decreases by 6-12% per 1 M ionic strength. In 9 M sodium perchlorate solution, this quantum yield decreases by roughly an order of magnitude. Ultrafast kinetic studies of 200 nm photon induced electron detachment from Br-, HO- and [SO3]^2- suggest that the prompt yield of thermalized electron does not change in these solutions; rather, the ionic strength effect originates in more efficient recombination of geminate…
Exploration of metal clusters (MCs) adaptive to both aqueous and oil phases without disturbing their size is promising for a broad scope of applications. The state-of-the-art approach via ligand-binding may perturb MC size due to varied metal-ligand binding strength when shuttling between solvents of different polarity. Herein, we applied physical confinement of a series of small noble MCs (less than 1 nm) inside ionic organic cages (I-Cages), which by means of anion exchange enables reversible transfer of MCs between aqueous and hydrophobic solutions without varying their ultrasmall size. Mor…
Films of titanate nanosheets (approx. 1.8-nm layer thickness and 200-nm size) having a lamellar structure can form electrolytefilled semi-permeable channels containing tetrabutylammonium cations. By evaporation of a colloidal solution, persistent deposits are readily formed with approx. 10 micrometer thickness on a 6-micrometer-thick poly(ethylene-terephthalate) (PET) substrate with a 20 micrometer diameter microhole. When immersed in aqueous solution, the titanate nanosheets exhibit a p.z.c. of -37 mV, consistent with the formation of a cation conducting (semi-permeable) deposit. With a suffi…
The ion-induced long-range orientational order between water molecules recently observed in second harmonic scattering experiments and illustrated with large scale molecular dynamics simulations is quantitatively explained using the Ornstein-Zernike integral equation approach of liquid physics. This general effect, not specific to hydrogen-bonding solvents, is controlled by electroneutrality condition, dipolar interactions and dielectric+ionic screening. As expected, all numerical theories recover the well-known analytical expressions established 40 years ago.
In this paper we compare different force fields that are widely used (Gromacs, Charmm-22/x-Plor, Charmm-27, Amber-1999, OPLS-AA) in biophysical simulations containing aqueous NaCl. We show that the uncertainties of the microscopic parameters of, in particular, sodium and, to a lesser extent, chloride translate into large differences in the computed radial-distribution functions. This uncertainty reflects the incomplete experimental knowledge of the structural properties of ionic aqueous solutions at finite molarity. We discuss possible implications on the computation of potential of mean force …
We present a model treating the kinetics of adsorption of soluble surface-active molecules at the interface between an aqueous solution and another fluid phase. The model accounts for both the diffusive transport inside the solution and the kinetics taking place at the interface using a free-energy formulation. In addition, it offers a general method of calculating dynamic surface tensions. Non-ionic surfactants are shown, in general, to undergo a diffusion-limited adsorption, in accord with experimental findings.
A force field of Li$^+$ , Na$^+$ , K$^+$, Mg$^{2+}$, Ca$^{2+}$, Cl$^-$, and SO$_4^{2-}$ in aqueous solution based on the TIP4P/2005 water model and scaled charges for the ions
The structure of an aqueous solution of sodium chloride at a planar electrode is investigated by integral equation techniques. With the central force water model the aqueous electrolyte is modelled as a mixture of sodium and chloride ions and partially charged hydrogen and oxygen atoms interacting via effective spherically symmetric pair potentials. The bulk correlation functions are obtained from the Ornstein-Zernike equation. With the Wertheim-Lovett-Mou-Buff equation we have calculated the density profiles at the uncharged and charged electrode. Steric interactions between the differently s…
Para- and ortho- isomers of water have different chemical and physical properties. Excitations by magnetic field, laser emission or hydrodynamic cavitation are reported to change energetic levels and spin configurations of water molecules that in turn change macroscopically measurable properties of aqueous solutions. Similar scheme is also explored for dissolved molecular oxygen, where physical excitations form singlet oxygen with different spin configurations and generate a long chain of ionic and free-radical reactions. This work utilizes electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to chara…
The Jones-Ray effect is an anomalous minimum in the surface tension of aqueous electrolytes at millimolar salt concentrations. We experimentally demonstrated that intentionally added ionic surfactants induce the Jones-Ray effect. The one-dimensional Poisson-Boltzmann theory, including the effect of surfactant adsorption and salt depletion, excellently agrees with the obtained experimental data. All the parameters of the ion-specific surface affinities used in the theory are consistent with previous experiments. These results strongly suggest that the Jones-Ray effect observed so far has been i…
Polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEM) in combination with good electrolyte solvents, e.g., ionic liquids (ILs) are potential candidates for the new generation of electrochemical separators. Swelling PEM with aqueous IL solutions is one way to incorporate IL in PEM. In addition to quantifying the IL uptake in PEM, physical characterization of the swollen PEM is essential for their potential applications and to uncover the underlying molecular process of the swelling. In this article, thickness and viscoelasticity of PEI(PSS/PADMAC)4PSS and PEI(PSS/PAH)4PSS multilayers were determined upon uptake of…
Photoelectron spectroscopy experiments in ionic solutions reveal important electronic structure information, in which the interaction between hydrated ions and water solvent can be inferred. Based on many-body perturbation theory with GW approximation, we theoretically compute the quasiparticle electronic structure of chloride anion solution, which is modeled by path-integral $ab$ $initio$ molecular dynamics simulation by taking account the nuclear quantum effects (NQEs). The electronic levels of hydrated anion as well as water are determined and compared to the recent experimental photoelectr…
We review a new theoretical approach to the kinetics of surfactant adsorption at fluid-fluid interfaces. It yields a more complete description of the kinetics both in the aqueous solution and at the interface, deriving all equations from a free-energy functional. It also provides a general method to calculate dynamic surface tensions. For non-ionic surfactants the results coincide with previous models. Common non-ionic surfactants are shown to undergo diffusion-limited adsorption, in agreement with experiments. Strong electrostatic interactions in salt-free ionic surfactant solutions are found…
Second harmonic generation amplitude and phase measurements are acquired in real time from fused silica:water interfaces that are subjected to ionic strength transitions conducted at pH 5.8. In conjunction with atomistic modeling, we identify correlations between structure in the Stern layer, encoded in the total second-order nonlinear susceptibility, chi(2)tot, and in the diffuse layer, encoded in the product of chi(2)tot and the total interfacial potential, phi(0)tot. chi(2)tot:phi(0)tot correlation plots indicate that the dynamics in the Stern and diffuse layers are decoupled from one anoth…
Water exchange reactions around ionic solutes are ubiquitous in aqueous solution-phase chemistry. However, the extreme sensitivity of exchange rates to perturbations in the chemistry of an ionic solute is not well understood. We examine water exchange around model ions within the language of dynamic facilitation theory, typically used to describe glassy and other systems with collective, facilitated dynamics. Through the development of a coarse-grained, kinetically-constrained lattice model of water exchange, we show that the timescale for water exchange scales exponentially with the strength …
The striking anomalies in physical properties of supercooled water that were discovered in the 1960-70s, remain incompletely understood and so provide both a source of controversy amongst theoreticians, and a stimulus to experimentalists and simulators to find new ways of penetrating the "crystallization curtain" that effectively shields the problem from solution. Recently a new door on the problem was opened by showing that, in ideal solutions, made using ionic liquid solutes, water anomalies are not destroyed as earlier found for common salt and most molecular solutes, but instead are enhanc…
The combinatorial explosion of empirical parameters in tens of thousands presents a tremendous challenge for extended Debye-Hückel models to calculate activity coefficients of aqueous mixtures of most important salts in chemistry. The explosion of parameters originates from the phenomenological extension of the Debye-Hückel theory that does not take steric and correlation effects of ions and water into account. In contrast, the Poisson-Fermi theory developed in recent years treats ions and water molecules as nonuniform hard spheres of any size with interstitial voids and includes ion-water and…
Graphene-based electric power generation that converts mechanical energy of flow of ionic droplets over the device surface into electricity has emerged as promising candidate for a blue-energy network. Yet the lack of a microscopic understanding of the underlying mechanism has prevented ability to optimize and control the performance of such devices. This requires information on interfacial structure and charging behavior at the molecular level. Here, we use sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFVS) to probe the interfaces of devices composed of aqueous solution, graphene and supporting po…
We present a novel microfield approach for studying the dependence of the orientational polarization of the water in aqueous electrolyte solutions upon the salt concentration and temperature. The model takes into account the orientation of the solvent dipoles due to the electric field created by ions, and the effect of thermal fluctuations. The model predicts a dielectric functional dependence of the form $\varepsilon(c)=\varepsilon_w-βL(3αc/β),\quadβ=\varepsilon_w-\varepsilon_{\rm ms}$, where $L$ is the Langevin function, $c$ is the salt concentration, $\varepsilon_w$ is the dielectric of pur…
We study the variation of the dielectric response of ionic aqueous solutions as function of their ionic strength. The effect of salt on the dielectric constant appears through the coupling between ions and dipolar water molecules. On a mean-field level, we account for any internal charge distribution of particles. The dipolar degrees of freedom are added to the ionic ones and result in a generalization of the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) equation called the Dipolar PB (DPB). By looking at the DPB equation around a fixed point-like ion, a closed-form formula for the dielectric constant is obtained. W…
The alkali metal ions in aqueous electrolyte solutions have strong influence on the surrounding network structure of water formed through hydrogen bonds. The extent of ionic perturbation to the structure of water depends on the nature of individual ions and the solute concentration. Experimental techniques like Neutron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, isotopic substitution study, viscosity measurements and related theoretical or simulation studies are used to understand the characteristics features of the structural changes in these solutions. Recent ultrasonic studies on aq…
A recently developed statistical mechanical Quasi-Chemical Theory (QCT) has led to significant insights into solvation phenomena for both hydrophilic and hydrophobic solutes. The QCT exactly partitions solvation free energies into three components: 1) inner-shell chemical, 2) outer-shell packing, and 3) outer-shell long-ranged contributions. In this paper, we discuss efficient methods for computing each of the three parts of the free energy. A Bayesian estimation approach is developed to compute the inner-shell chemical and outer-shell packing contributions. We derive upper and lower bounds on…
We have used molecular simulation and methods of importance sampling to study the thermodynamics and kinetics of ionic charge separation at a liquid water-metal interface. We have considered this process using canonical examples of two different classes of ions: a simple alkali-halide pair, Na$^+$I$^-$, or classical ions, and the products of water autoionization, H$_3$O$^+$OH$^-$, or water ions. We find that for both ion classes, the microscopic mechanism of charge separation, including water's collective role in the process, is conserved between the bulk liquid and the electrode interface. De…
