Representation based classification methods have become a hot research topic during the past few years, and the two most prominent approaches are sparse representation based classification (SRC) and collaborative representation based classification (CRC). CRC reveals that it is the collaborative representation rather than the sparsity that makes SRC successful. Nevertheless, the dense representation of CRC may not be discriminative which will degrade its performance for classification tasks. To alleviate this problem to some extent, we propose a new method called sparse and collaborative-competitive representation based classification (SCCRC) for image classification. Firstly, the coefficients of the test sample are obtained by SRC and CCRC, respectively. Then the fused coefficient is derived by multiplying the coefficients of SRC and CCRC. Finally, the test sample is designated to the class that has the minimum residual. Experimental results on several benchmark databases demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed SCCRC. The source code of SCCRC is accessible at https://github.com/li-zi-qi/SCCRC.
In this paper, we design a Collaborative-Hierarchical Sparse and Low-Rank (C-HiSLR) model that is natural for recognizing human emotion in visual data. Previous attempts require explicit expression components, which are often unavailable and difficult to recover. Instead, our model exploits the lowrank property over expressive facial frames and rescue inexact sparse representations by incorporating group sparsity. For the CK+ dataset, C-HiSLR on raw expressive faces performs as competitive as the Sparse Representation based Classification (SRC) applied on manually prepared emotions. C-HiSLR pe…
Image feature representation plays an essential role in image recognition and related tasks. The current state-of-the-art feature learning paradigm is supervised learning from labeled data. However, this paradigm requires large-scale category labels, which limits its applicability to domains where labels are hard to obtain. In this paper, we propose a new data-driven feature learning paradigm which does not rely on category labels. Instead, we learn from user behavior data collected on social media. Concretely, we use the image relationship discovered in the latent space from the user behavior…

Cross-modal similarity search is a problem about designing a search system supporting querying across content modalities, e.g., using an image to search for texts or using a text to search for images. This paper presents a compact coding solution for efficient search, with a focus on the quantization approach which has already shown the superior performance over the hashing solutions in the single-modal similarity search. We propose a cross-modal quantization approach, which is among the early attempts to introduce quantization into cross-modal search. The major contribution lies in jointly le…
Descriptive region features extracted by object detection networks have played an important role in the recent advancements of image captioning. However, they are still criticized for the lack of contextual information and fine-grained details, which in contrast are the merits of traditional grid features. In this paper, we introduce a novel Dual-Level Collaborative Transformer (DLCT) network to realize the complementary advantages of the two features. Concretely, in DLCT, these two features are first processed by a novelDual-way Self Attenion (DWSA) to mine their intrinsic properties, where a…
Segmentation of ultra-high resolution images is increasingly demanded, yet poses significant challenges for algorithm efficiency, in particular considering the (GPU) memory limits. Current approaches either downsample an ultra-high resolution image or crop it into small patches for separate processing. In either way, the loss of local fine details or global contextual information results in limited segmentation accuracy. We propose collaborative Global-Local Networks (GLNet) to effectively preserve both global and local information in a highly memory-efficient manner. GLNet is composed of a gl…
This paper introduces a simple but highly efficient ensemble for robust texture classification, which can effectively deal with translation, scale and changes of significant viewpoint problems. The proposed method first inherits the spirit of spatial pyramid matching model (SPM), which is popular for encoding spatial distribution of local features, but in a flexible way, partitioning the original image into different levels and incorporating different overlapping patterns of each level. This flexible setup helps capture the informative features and produces sufficient local feature codes by so…

Audience discovery is an important activity at major movie studios. Deep models that use convolutional networks to extract frame-by-frame features of a movie trailer and represent it in a form that is suitable for prediction are now possible thanks to the availability of pre-built feature extractors trained on large image datasets. Using these pre-built feature extractors, we are able to process hundreds of publicly available movie trailers, extract frame-by-frame low level features (e.g., a face, an object, etc) and create video-level representations. We use the video-level representations to…
