The drag and diffusion coefficients of heavy quarks propagating through quark gluon plasma (QGP) have been estimated by shielding both the electric and magnetic type infra-red divergences. The electric type screening in perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) has been widely studied and used in evaluating the diffusion coefficient of heavy quarks (HQs). To our knowledge the impact of magnetic screening in diffusion coefficients of HQs is not studied before. It is found that the effect of magnetic screening mass on the drag and diffusion coefficients of HQs is quite significant and its contribution should not be ignored for explaining the experimental data of heavy quark observables.
We calculate the spectral function in pseudoscalar (scalar) channel in the high temperature phase of QCD in presence of a background magnetic field. Spatial and temporal screening masses are determined from the long distance behavior of the corresponding correlation functions.
We show that classical chromomagnetic fields produced coherently in the initial stage of a heavy-ion collision exhibit screening. From the two-point field strength correlator we determine the magnetic mass for SU(2) to be m ~ 5 times the saturation scale. Magnetic screening leads to an intuitive understanding of the area law scaling of spatial Wilson loops observed previously. The presence of screening effects in the initial state provides a basis for defining kinetic processes in the early stage of heavy-ion collisions, with electric and magnetic masses of the same order.
The quark-gluon plasma (QGP) excitations, corresponding to the scalar and pseudoscalar meson quantum numbers, for different temperatures are calculated. Analysis is performed in the Hard Thermal Loop (HTL) Approximation and leads to a better understanding of the excitations of QGP in the deconfined phase and is also of relevance for lattice studies.
Screening of initial parton production due to the presence of on-shell partons in high-energy heavy-ion collisions is discussed. It is shown that the divergent cross sections in the calculation of parton production can be regulated self-consistently without an {\it ad hoc} cut-off, and that the resultant parton production and transverse energy production rate are finite. Consequences on the energy density estimates are discussed.
Dynamical screening in the magnetic part of the one-gluon exchange interaction is included in the study of radiative energy loss of a fast parton propagating inside a quark-gluon plasma. As a result the final radiative energy loss is about twice as large as when only the electric part of one-gluon exchange interaction is considered. A non-perturbative magnetic screening mass is also used in the estimate of the mean-free-path of parton scattering in a hot QCD matter.
We investigate the screening masses of neutral pions and sigma mesons in hot and magnetized quark matter in the framework of a two-flavor lattice-improved Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with a magnetic field dependent coupling constant, which is determined by utilizing the results from lattice QCD simulations. Since such model can well reproduce inverse magnetic catalysis (IMC), by comparing with the standard NJL model, we systemically analyze the impacts of IMC on the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the longitudinal and transverse screening masses of the chiral partners, i.e. π^…
Due to the rapid longitudinal expansion of the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions, large local-rest-frame momentum-space anisotropies are generated during the system's evolution. These momentum-space anisotropies complicate the modeling of heavy-quarkonium dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma due to the fact that the resulting inter-quark potentials are spatially anisotropic, requiring real-time solution of the 3D Schrödinger equation. Herein, we introduce a method for reducing anisotropic heavy-quark potentials to isotropic ones by introducing an effective screening mass that de…
Lowest-order cross sections for $q\bar q$ production and annihilation can be approximately corrected for higher-order QCD effects by using a corrective $K$-factor. For energies where quark masses cannot be ignored, the $K$-factor is dominated by the wave function distortion arising from the initial- or final-state interaction between the quark and the antiquark. We evaluate this $K$-factor for $q \bar q$ production and annihilation in a quark-gluon plasma by taking into account the effects of Debye screening through a color-Yukawa potential. We present the corrective $K$-factor as a function o…
Final-state interaction and screening have a great influence on $q \bar q$ production cross sections, which are important quantities in many problems in quark-gluon plasma physics. They lead to an enhancement of the cross section for a $q \bar q$ color-singlet state and a suppression for a color-octet state. The effects are large near the production threshold. The presence of screening gives rise to resonances for $q\bar q$ production just above the threshold at specific plasma temperatures. These resonances, especially $c\bar c$ and $b \bar b$ resonances, may be utilized to search for the qua…
The quark-delocalization, color-screening model, extended by inclusion of a one-pion-exchange (OPE) tail, is applied to the study of the deuteron and the d* dibaryon. The results show that the properties of the deuteron (an extended object) are well reproduced, greatly improving the agreement with experimental data as compared to our previous study (without OPE). At the same time, the mass and decay width of the d* (a compact object) are, as expected, not altered significantly.
The Coulomb interaction effect and the surface effect are consistently taken into account in the hadron-quark mixed phase. These two finite-size effects greatly change the properties of the mixed phase and restrict its density region. In particular, the charge screening effect and the rearrangement of the charged particles are elucidated. Keeping the Gibbs conditions throughout the numerical procedure, we show the Maxwell construction effectively regain the physical meaning and the equation of state becomes similar to that given by the Maxwell construction.
The effects of color screening on the hadronization of a parton plasma into a hadron gas are examined at the energies of the relativistic heavy ion collider. It is found to have the tendency to prevent hadronization and therefore delaying the conversion of the partons into a hadron gas. Because of the continual expansion, the resulting hadron gas number densities are lower when screening is included. This should reduce the hadronic noise to genuine signals of the quark-gluon plasma. In this sense, color screening is favorable and should be included in numerical models. In any case, we advocate…
We analyze the dependence of heavy quark free energies on the baryon chemical potential (mu_b) in 2-flavour QCD using improved (p4) staggered fermions with a bare quark mass of m/T = 0.4. By performing a 6th order Taylor expansion in the chemical potential which circumvents the sign problem. The Taylor expansion coefficients of colour singlet and colour averaged free energies are calculated and from this the expansion coefficients for the corresponding screening masses are determined. We find that for small mu_b the free energies of a static quark anti-quark pair decrease in a medium with a ne…
We study the questions of the existence and mass of the proposed $d' (IJ^P=00^-)$ dibaryon in the quark-delocalization, color-screening model (QDCSM). The transformation between physical and symmetry bases has been extended to the cases beyond the SU(2) orbital symmetry. Using parameters fixed by baryon properties and $NN$ scattering, we find a mild attraction in the $IJ^P=00^-$ channel, but it is not strong enough to form a deeply bound state as proposed for the $d'$ state. Nor does the (isospin) I=2 N$Δ$ configuration have a deeply bound state. These results show that if a narrow dibaryon $d…
The screening potential of a parton moving through a quark-gluon plasma is calculated using the semi-classical transport theory. An anisotropic potential showing a minimum in the direction of the parton velocity is found. As consequences possible new bound states and J/psi dissociation are discussed.
Based on the constituent quasiparticle model of quark-gluon plasma (QGP), the matrix elements of the density operator and the Wigner function in the color phase space are presented in form of color path integrals over Wiener and SU(3) group Haar measures. Monte Carlo calculations of quark and gluon momentum distributions and spatial pair distribution functions have been carried out for the strongly coupled QGP plasma in thermal equilibrium at zero baryon chemical potential. The Debye screening mass and the running coupling constant have been obtained from the spatial pair distribution function…
We calculate the screening potential of a fast parton moving through a quark-gluon plasma in the framework of semi-classical transport theory. We found an anisotropic potential showing a minimum in the direction of the parton velocity. Possible consequences of this potential on binary states in a quark-gluon plasma are discussed.
We consider the effect of including quark delocalization and color screening, in the nonrelativistic quark cluster model, on baryon-baryon potentials and phase shifts. We find that the inclusion of these additional effects allows a good qualitative description of both.
An alternative method is applied to the study of nucleon-nucleon(NN) scattering phase shifts in the framework of extended quark delocalization, color-screening model(QDCSM), where the one-pion-exchange(OPE) with short-range cutoff is included.
All the next-to-leading order contributions to the quasi-particle dispersion laws of a quark-gluon plasma which due to infrared singularities are sensitive to the magnetic-mass scale are calculated using Braaten-Pisarski resummation. These relative-order-$g\ln(g)$ corrections are shown here to generally contribute to the dynamical screening of gluonic fields with frequencies below the plasma frequency as well as to the damping of propagating gluonic and fermionic quasi-particles. In the limit of vanishing wave-vector the infrared singularities disappear, but in a way that raises the possibilit…
We present our results on meson and nucleon screening masses in finite temperature two flavour QCD using smeared staggered valence quarks and staggered thin-link sea quarks with different lattice spacings and quark masses. We investigate optimization of smearing by observing its effects on the infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) components of gluon and quark fields. The application of smearing to screening at finite temperature also provides a transparent window into the mechanism of the interplay of smearing and chiral symmetry. The improved hadronic operators show that above the finite temper…
Using an unquenched lattice potential to calculate the spectrum of the bottomonium system, we demonstrate numerically that the effect of pair creation is to produce termination of hadronic Regge trajectories, in contrast to the Veneziano model and the vast majority of phenomenological generalizations. Termination of Regge trajectories may have significant experimental consequences.
The $ND$ and $NB$ systems with $I=0$ and $1$, $J^{P}=\frac{1}{2}^{\pm}$, $\frac{3}{2}^{\pm}$, and $\frac{5}{2}^{\pm}$ are investigated within the framework of quark delocalization color screening model. The results show that all the positive parity states are unbound. By coupling to the $ND^{*}$ channel, the state $ND$ with $I=0,~J^{P}=\frac{1}{2}^{-}$ can form a bound state, which can be invoked to explain the observed $Σ(2800)$ state. The mass of the $ND^{*}$ with $I=0,~J^{P}=\frac{3}{2}^{-}$ is close to that of the reported $Λ_{c}(2940)^{+}$, which indicates that $Λ_{c}(2940)^{+}$ can be ex…
We perform a systemical investigation of the low-lying doubly-heavy dibaryon systems with strange $S=0$, isospin $I=0$, $1$, $2$ and the angular momentum $J=0$, $1$, $2$, $3$ in the quark delocalization color screening model. We find the effect of channel-coupling cannot be neglected in the study of the multi-quark systems. Due to the heavy flavor symmetry, the results of the doubly-charm and doubly-bottom dibaryon systems are similar with each other. Both of them have three bound states, the quantum numbers of which are $IJ=00$, $IJ=02$ and $IJ=13$, respectively. The energies are $4554$ MeV, …
We consider a simple model for the coordinate-space vacuum polarization function which is often parametrized in terms of a screening mass. We discuss the circumstances in which the standard result for the screening mass, $m_{sc}=πT$, is obtained. In the model considered here, that result is obtained when the momenta in the relevant vacuum polarization integral are small with respect to the first Matsubara frequency.
We apply the quark delocalization and color screening model to nucleon-baryon scattering. A semi-quantitative fit to N-N, N-Lambda and N-Sigma phase shifts and scattering cross sections is obtained without invoking meson exchange. Quarks delocalize reasonably in all of the different flavor channels to induce effective nucleon-baryon interactions with both a repulsive core and with an intermediate range attraction in the cases expected.
Possibility of the structured mixed phases at first order phase transitions in neutron stars is reexamined by taking into account the charge screening effect. The Maxwell construction is shown to be not conflicted with the Gibbs conditions once the Coulomb potential is properly taken into account. Taking the hadron-quark deconfinement transition as an example, we explicitly demonstrate a mechanical instability of the geometrical structure of the structured mixed phase by the charge screening effect. In this case we have effectively the picture given by the Maxwell construction.
The quark delocalization and color screening model, a quark potential model, is used for a systematic search of dibaryon candidates in the $u,d$ and $s$ three flavor world. Color screening which appears in unquenched lattice gauge calculations and quark delocalization (which is similar to electron delocalization in molecular physics) are both included. Flavor symmetry breaking and channel coupling effects are studied. The model is constrained not only by baryon ground state properties but also by the $N$-$N$ scattering phase shifts. The deuteron and zero energy di-nucleon resonance are both re…
We studied QCD with two flavors of dynamical staggered quarks at finite temperature, with a bare sea quark mass of about 17 MeV. We report investigations of baryon, isospin, charge and strangeness susceptibilities, as well as screening masses obtained from correlators of local and one-link separated meson operators. These were studied as functions of valence quark mass at several temperatures. Our results for susceptibilities deviate significantly from ideal gas values, and even more from the weak coupling series. We also report the first measurement of off-diagonal quark number susceptibiliti…
The thermomagnetic behavior of quark-gluon plasma has recently received a lot of attention. In this work, we make use of the extended self-consistent quasiparticle model to study the thermodynamic properties of magnetized (2+1) flavor quark-gluon plasma. The system is considered as a non-interacting system of quasiparticles with masses depending on both temperature and magnetic field. This allows obtaining the equation of state of the system and the other thermodynamic properties such as the speed of sound. We use the extended self-consistent model to obtain the magnetization and show that QGP…
We check a commonly used approximation in which a baryon with a heavy quark is described as a heavy quark-light diquark system. The heavy quark influences the diquark internal motion reducing the average distance between the two light quarks. Besides, we show how the average distance between the heavy quark and any of the light quarks, and that between the heavy quark and the center of mass of the light diquark, are smaller than the distance between the two light quarks, which seems to contradict the heavy quark-light diquark picture. This latter result is in agreement with expectations from Q…
We compute---at finite quark chemical potentials---the color screening of cold quark matter at the one-loop level, comparing the normal, BCS-paired U(1)em (or Higgs) phase and a singlet phase with color-singlet condensate near the Fermi surface. The latter phase is computed using the example of two-color QCD with a color-singlet diquark condensate. In contrast to the normal and Higgs phases, neither electric nor magnetic screening masses appear in the singlet phase. The absence of a magnetic mass, within a perturbative framework, is a consequence of the proper treatment of gauge invariance. Wh…
We revisit the transport coefficients of heavy quarkonia moving in high-temperature QCD plasmas. The thermal width and mass shift for heavy quarkonia are closely related to the momentum diffusion coefficient and its dispersive counterpart for heavy quarks, respectively. For quarkonium at rest in plasmas the longitudinal gluon part of the color-singlet self-energy diagram is sufficient to determine the leading-order thermal width, whereas the momentum dependence is obtained from the transverse gluon channel. Using the quarkonium-gluon effective vertex based on the dipole interaction of color ch…
The mass estimate of the $d^* (IJ^P=03^+)$ dibaryon is improved by a dynamical calculation in the quark delocalization, color screening model. The partial decay width of $d^*$ into an $NN$ D-wave state is also obtained. The mass obtained is slightly larger than that obtained in adiabatic calculations, due to the anharmonicity of the effective potential between two $Δ$'s. The value of the width obtained due to tensor one-gluon-exchange is about 5 MeV, comparable in magnitude to earlier results found using pion exchange.
The pion-nucleon bremsstrahlung $π+N\Longrightarrowγ'+π'+N'$ is studied in a new form of current conservation. According to this condition, the internal and external particle radiation parts of the $πN$ radiation amplitude have opposite signs, i.e., they contain terms which must cancel each other. Therefore, one has a screening of the internal and external particle radiation in the $πN$ bremsstrahlung. In particular, it is shown that the double $Δ$ exchange diagram with the $Δ-γ' Δ'$ vertex cancel against the appropriate longitudinal part of the external particle radiation diagrams. Consequent…
The L-dependence of the static potential between Nc quarks arranged in a circle of radius L (a "baryon") immersed in the hot plasma of a gauge theory with Nc colors defines a screening length Ls. We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to compute this screening length for the case of heavy quarks in the plasma of strongly coupled N=4 super Yang-Mills theory moving with velocity v relative to the baryon. We find that in the v -> 1 limit, Ls \propto (1-v^2)^{1/4}/T, and find that corrections to this velocity dependence are small at lower velocities. This result provides evidence for the robustness of …
Heavy quarkonium suppression was proposed long ago as a signal of the formation of a deconfined phase in heavy ion collisions. Originally the mechanism responsible for this suppression was thought to be color screening. However perturbative computations and recent lattice studies suggest the existence of an imaginary part of the potential which could have a more important role for suppression than screening. In this work we review some general aspects of effective field theories for heavy quarkonium in the medium and discuss the physical phenomena behind the imaginary part of the potential and…
The Omega-Omega (SIJ=-6,0,0) dibaryon state is studied with the extended quark-delocalization color-screening model including a pi meson exchange tail, which reproduces the properties of the deuteron quantitatively. We find the mass of the di-Omega to be about 45 MeV lower than the Omega-Omega threshold. The effect of channel coupling due to the tensor force has been calculated and found to be small in this case. We have also studied the effect of other pseudoscalar meson exchanges and sensitivity to the short-range cutoff radius, r_0, for the meson exchanges.
We show how heavy quark symmetry constraints on doubly heavy baryon semileptonic decay widths can be used to test the validity of different quark model calculations. The large discrepancies in the results observed between different quark model approaches can be understood in terms of a severe violation of heavy quark spin symmetry constraints by some of those models.
The diffusion coefficients of heavy quarks from the coherent color electromagnetic fields which are generated in the early stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions are calculated at midrapidity, and compared with those obtained from collisions within a thermalized quark-gluon plasma. The coherent color fields are modeled such that they are initially longitudinal and then become isotropic. We found that the diffusion coefficients from the coherent color fields are larger than those from collisions except for very fast heavy quarks, and the color fields are less effective for heavy-quark energ…

We estimate the radiative energy-loss of heavy quarks, produced from the initial fusion of partons, while propagating in a quark-gluon plasma which may be formed in the wake of relativistic heavy ion collisions. We find that the radiative energy-loss for heavy quarks is larger than the collisional energy-loss for all energies. We point out the consequences on possible signals of the quark-gluon plasma.
The sequential melting of the bottomonium states is one of the important signals for the existence of a quark gluon plasma. The study of bottomonia spectral functions on the lattice is a difficult task for many reasons. Calculations based on NRQCD, that are commonly used for such purpose, are not applicable at high temperatures. In this work we propose a new method to study this problem by calculating the spatial screening masses of bottomonium states. We calculate the spatial meson correlators and extract the screening masses for mesons in different quantum channels using highly improved stag…
We report a recent calculation of the heavy quarkonium energy levels and decay widths in a quark- gluon plasma whose temperature is much smaller than the inverse radius of the bound state, based on a Non-Relativistic Effective Field theory framework for heavy quarkonium at finite temperature. Relevance for the phenomenology of the Y(1S) in heavy ion collisions is also discussed.
The effect of color screening on the formation of a heavy quark-antiquark ($Q\bar{Q}$) bound state--such as the $J/ψ$ meson--is studied using a constituent-quark model. The response of the nuclear medium to the addition of two color charges is simulated directly in terms of its quark constituents via a string-flip potential that allows for quark confinement within hadrons yet enables the hadrons to separate without generating unphysical long-range forces. Medium modifications to the properties of the heavy meson, such as its energy and its mean-square radius, are extracted by solving Schröding…
We present lattice QCD results for the screening masses of light mesons and charmonia. The lattice computations were performed with 2+1 flavors of improved staggered quarks using quark masses which correspond to realistic pion and kaon masses at zero temperature. For the light quark sector we have found that the screening masses in the pseudo-scalar and the isovector scalar channels do not become degenerate at the chiral crossover temperature indicating an effective non-restoration of the axial symmetry. Also the splitting between the vector and the pseudo-scalar screening masses persists even…
The quark delocalization and color screening model is used for a systematic study of the effective potential between baryons in the u,d and s sector. The model is constrained by the properties of baryons and N-N scattering. The effective potentials for the N-N (IJ=01,10,11,00) channels and the N-Lambda and N-Sigma (IJ = (1/2)1, (1/2)0, (3/2)1, (3/2)0) channels fit the N-N, N-Lambda and N-Sigma scattering data reasonably well. This model predicts: There are rather strong effective attractions between decuplet-baryons; the effective attractions between octet-baryons are weak or even repulsive; a…
Possibility of structured mixed phases at first order phase transitions in neutron stars is re-examined by taking into account charge screening and surface effects. Transition from the hadron $npe$ phase to the quark phase is studied. Two possibilities, the mixed phase and two separate phases given by the double-tangent (Maxwell) construction are considered. Inhomogeneous profiles of the electric potential and their contribution to the energy are analytically calculated. The electric field configurations determine the droplet size and the geometry of structures.
The results for the Debye and Meissner screening masses of the gluons and the photon in the case of neutral and beta-equilibrated dense two-flavor quark matter are presented. In the limits of the normal phase and the ideal two-flavor color superconducting phase, the screening masses coincide with the known results. Most interestingly, we find that the Meissner screening masses squared can be negative, indicating a plasma-type chromomagnetic instability in dense quark matter.
We present results for screening masses of mesons built from light and strange quarks in the temperature range of approximately between 140 MeV to 800 MeV. The lattice computations were performed with 2+1 dynamical light and strange flavors of improved (p4) staggered fermions along a line of constant physics defined by a pion mass of about 220 MeV and a kaon mass of 500 MeV. The lattices had temporal extents Nt = 4, 6 and 8 and aspect ratios of Ns / Nt \geq 4. At least up to a temperature of 140 MeV the pseudo-scalar screening mass remains almost equal to the corresponding zero temperature pse…
Based on the Dyson-Schwinger equation, we compute the resummed gluon propagator in a holonomous plasma that is described by introducing a constant background field for the vector potential $A_{0}$. Due to the transversality of the holonomous Hard-Thermal-Loop in gluon self-energy, the resummed propagator has a similar Lorentz structure as that in the perturbative Quark-Gluon Plasma where the holonomy vanishes. As for the color structures, since diagonal gluons are mixed in the over-complete double line basis, only the propagators for off-diagonal gluons can be obtained unambiguously. On the ot…
In a strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma, collective excitations of gluons and quarks should dominate over the excitation of individual quasi-free gluon and quark modes. To explore this possibility, we computed screening masses for ground-state light-quark mesons and baryons at leading-order in a symmetry-preserving truncation scheme for the Dyson-Schwinger equations using a confining formulation of a contact-interaction at nonzero temperature. Meson screening masses are obtained from Bethe-Salpeter equations; and baryon analogues from a novel construction of the Faddeev equation, which employ…
Dibaryon candidates with strangeness S=-2,-3,-4,-5,-6 are studied in terms of the extended quark delocalization and color screening model. The results show that there are only a few promising low lying dibaryon states: The H and di-Omega may be marginally strong interaction stable but model uncertainties are too large to allow any definitive statement. The SIJ=-3,1/2,2 N-Omega state is 62 MeV lower than the N-Omega threshold and 24 MeV lower than the Lambda-Xi-pi threshold. It might appear as a narrow dibaryon resonance and be detectable in the RHIC detector through the reconstruction of the v…
