The present work reports results of the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), optical absorption, radio- and photoluminescence (RL and PL) complex study of the Lu2Si2O7:Pr and Lu2Si2O7:Ce pyrosilicate crystals. In both crystals, the EPR spectra demonstrate the presence of characteristic signals originating from the Yb3+, Er3+, Nd3+, Dy3+, Gd3+ and V3+ ions existing in the material as uncontrolled impurities. The corresponding spectra (except for Gd3+) have been analysed in detail and g- and hyperfine tensors are determined for all these ions in the lutetium pyrosilicate for the first time. Optical absorption, RL and PL measurements in the Lu2Si2O7:Pr crystal demonstrated presence of only characteristic Pr3+ transitions. In addition, the Pr3+- Pr3+ energy transfer was observed and confirmed experimentally.
Luminescence in Ce doped materials corresponds to a transition from an excited state where the lowest Ce 5d level is filled to the ground state where a single 4f level is filled. We have performed theoretical calculations based on Density Functional Theory to calculate the ground state band structure of Ce-doped materials as well as the Ce3+ excited state. The excited state calculations used a constrained occupancy approach by setting the occupation of the Ce 4f states to zero and allowing the first excited state above them to be filled. These calculations were performed on a set of Ce doped m…
Luminescence in Eu$^{2+}$ activated materials corresponds to a transition from an excited state where the lowest Eu 5$d$ level is filled with one electron (often called the (Eu$^{2+}$)$^*$ state) to the ground state with half-filled 4$f$ shell with seven electrons of the same spin. We have performed theoretical calculations based on Density Functional Theory to determine the ground state band structure of Eu-doped materials as well as study the (Eu$^{2+}$)$^*$ excited state. Calculations were performed on Eu doped materials, experimentally known to be either scintillators or non-scintillators,…
We developed a new sub-nanosecond time-resolved instrument to study the dynamics of UV-visible luminescence under high stopping power heavy ion irradiation. We applied our instrument, called SPORT, on a fast plastic scintillator (BC-400) irradiated with 27-MeV Ar ions having high mean electronic stopping power of 2.6 MeV/μm. As a consequence of increasing permanent radiation damages with increasing ion fluence, our investigations reveal a degradation of scintillation intensity together with, thanks to the time-resolved measurement, a decrease in the decay constant of the scintillator. This com…
Caesium iodide is one of the more extensively studied scintillators. Here we present X-ray luminescence spectra, scintillation light output and decay curves as function of temperature, from room temperature down to below 10 K. Features of the observed intrinsic luminescence are explained in terms of radiative recombination of on- and off-centre STE. A model permitting interpretation of the dynamics of luminescence changes in CsI with temperature is suggested. This model includes adiabatic potential energy surfaces (APES) associated with singlet and triplet states of self-trapped excitons (STE)…
We study deep trapping states in Ce3+-doped garnet crystals with the composition (Lu,Y,Gd)3(Ga,Al)5O12, recently shown as having remarkably high light yield. We use thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) technique above room temperature and determine the composition Gd3Ga3Al2O12 as the host showing the lowest concentration of traps. This host consistently manifest very low afterglow comparable to that of the standard BGO crystal. We also perform TSL glow peak analysis based on the initial rise technique to evaluate trap depth and other characteristics associated with TSL peaks.
Luminescence quenching via non-radiative recombination channels limits the efficiency of optical materials such as phosphors and scintillators and therefore has implications for conversion efficiency and device lifetimes. In materials such as Ce-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG:Ce), quenching shows a strong dependence on both temperature and activator concentration, limiting the ability to fabricate high-intensity white-light emitting diodes with high operating temperatures. Here, we reveal by means of first-principles calculations an efficient recombination mechanism in YAG:Ce that involves…
The incorporation of Eu into the diamond lattice is investigated in a combined theoretical-experimental study. The large size of the Eu ion induces a strain on the host lattice, which is minimal for the Eu-vacancy complex. The oxidation state of Eu is calculated to be 3+ for all defect models considered. In contrast, the total charge of the defect-complexes is shown to be negative -1.5 to -2.3 electron. Hybrid-functional electronic-band-structures show the luminescence of the Eu defect to be strongly dependent on the local defect geometry. The 4-coordinated Eu substitutional dopant is the most…

The effects of hydrogen incorporation into beta-Ga2O3 thin films have been investigated by chemical, electrical and optical characterization techniques. Hydrogen incorporation was achieved by remote plasma doping without any structural alterations of the film; however, X-ray photoemission reveals major changes in the oxygen chemical environment. Depth-resolved cathodoluminescence (CL) reveals that the near-surface region of the H-doped Ga2O3 film exhibits a distinct red luminescence (RL) band at 1.9 eV. The emergence of the H-related RL band is accompanied by an enhancement in the electrical c…
The processes of hole localization in double-doped PbWO_4:Mo,La and PbWO_4:Mo,Y single crystals have been studied by continuous wave and pulse electron spin resonance (ESR) and thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) methods. We show that the holes created by the UV irradiation are preferably trapped at lattice oxygen ions in the vicinity of perturbing defects such as lead vacancies, impurity ions (La, Y, Mo), and other lattice imperfections. This leads to a variety of O^- centers, which differ both by thermal stability (from about 170 K up to 240 K) and ESR parameters. The hole centers of thi…
It was recently shown that the energy resolution of Ce-doped LaBr$_3$ scintillator radiation detectors can be crucially improved by co-doping with Sr, Ca, or Ba. Here we outline a mechanism for this enhancement on the basis of electronic structure calculations. We show that (i) Br vacancies are the primary electron traps during the initial stage of thermalization of hot carriers, prior to hole capture by Ce dopants; (ii) isolated Br vacancies are associated with deep levels; (iii) Sr doping increases the Br vacancy concentration by several orders of magnitude; (iv) $\text{Sr}_\text{La}$ binds …
TlSr2I5: Eu2+ is a newly discovered scintillator and show promising scintillation properties for X- and γ-rays spectroscopy applications. Two zones vertical Bridgman technique is used for the growth of this scintillator. Luminescence properties of the grown crystals are measured under X-ray excitation at room temperature. Pure and Eu2+ doped crystals contained broad emission bands between 445-670 nm peaking at 528 nm and 430-600 nm peaking at 463 nm, respectively. Energy resolution, light yield and decay time profiles are studied under 662 keV γ-ray excitation using 137Cs radioactive source. E…
We generalize and systematize basic experimental data on optical and luminescence properties of ZnO single crystals, thin films, powders, ceramics, and nanocrystals. We consider and study mechanisms by which two main emission bands occur, a short-wavelength band near the fundamental absorption edge and a broad long-wavelength band, the maximum of which usually lies in the green spectral range. We determine a relationship between the two luminescence bands and study in detail the possibility of controlling the characteristics of ZnO by varying the maximum position of the short-wavelength band. …
Electron and hole trapping was studied in the Ce3+ and Pr3+ doped Lu2Si2O7 scintillation single crystals (LPS:Ce and LPS:Pr) by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). Detailed EPR measurements of the X-ray irradiated LPS crystals revealed that holes generated by irradiation are predominantly trapped at oxygen lattice ions creating O- centers. The same X-ray irradiation creates also electron type centers which were attributed to Lu2+ ions, where the trapped electron at Lu lattice ion is stabilized by a defect nearby, such as oxygen vacancy and Ir3+ impurity ion. Both the hole and electron cente…
GaAs nanowires (NWs) grown by molecular-beam epitaxy may contain segments of both the zincblende (ZB) and wurtzite (WZ) phases. Depending on the growth conditions, we find that optical emission of such NWs occurs either predominantly above or below the band gap energy of ZB GaAs [E(g,ZB)]. This result is consistent with the assumption that the band gap energy of wurtzite GaAs [E(g,WZ)] is larger than E(g,ZB) and that GaAs NWs with alternating ZB and WZ segments along the wire axis establish a type II band alignment, where electrons captured within the ZB segments recombine with holes of the ne…
The work is necessitated by search for new materials to detect ionizing radiation. The rare-earth ions doped with ternary alkali earth-halide systems are promising scintillators showing high efficiency and energy resolution. Some aspects of crystal growth and data on the structural and luminescence properties of BaBrI and BaClI doped with low concentrations of $\mathrm{Eu^{2+}}$ ions are reported. The crystals are grown by the vertical Bridgman method in sealed quartz ampoule. New crystallography data for BaClI single crystal obtained by single crystal X-ray diffraction method are presented in…
Current technologies for X-ray detection rely on scintillation from expensive inorganic crystals grown at high-temperature, which so far has hindered the development of large-area scintillator arrays. Thanks to the presence of heavy atoms, solution-grown hybrid lead halide perovskite single crystals exhibit short X-ray absorption length and excellent detection efficiency. Here we compare X-ray scintillator characteristics of three-dimensional (3D) MAPbI3 and MAPbBr3 and two-dimensional (2D) (EDBE)PbCl4 hybrid perovskite crystals. X-ray excited thermoluminescence measurements indicate the absen…
Single crystals of LiCaAlF6 undoped and Eu, Na co-doped were studied by electron paramagnetic resonance, radioluminescence and thermally stimulated luminescence techniques applied in a correlated manner. The undoped samples exposed to X-ray irradiation exhibited two hole-like charge trapping centers creation, the molecular ions of the form: ClF- and F2^- - F2^- dimer. Their trap depths and frequency factors were determined as follows: Et1=1.7 eV and Et2=1.1. eV for trap depths and f ~ 10^13 s-1 for frequency factor, respectively. It was found that the europium preferable charge state is 2+ in …
