We obtain optimal Gaussian concentration bounds (GCBs) for stochastic chains of unbounded memory (SCUMs) on countable alphabets. These stochastic processes are also known as "chains with complete connections" or "$g$-measures". We consider two different conditions on the kernel: (1) when the sum of its oscillations is less than one, or (2) when the sum of its variations is finite, i.e., belongs to $\ell^1(\mathbb{N})$. We also obtain explicit constants as functions of the parameters of the model. The proof is based on maximal coupling. Our conditions are optimal in the sense that we exhibit examples of SCUMs that do not have GCB and for which the sum of oscillations is strictly larger than one, or the variation belongs to $\ell^{1+ε}(\mathbb{N})$ for any $ε> 0$. These examples are based on the existence of phase transitions. We also extend the validity of GCB to a class of functions which can depend on infinitely many coordinates.
We illustrate our results by three applications. First, we derive a Dvoretzky-Kiefer-Wolfowitz type inequality which gives a uniform control on the fluctuations of the empirical measure. Second, in the finite-alphabet case, we obtain an upper bound on the $\bar{d}$-distance between two stationary SCUMs and, as a by-product, we obtain new (explicit) bounds on the speed of Markovian approximation in $\bar{d}$. Third, we obtain exponential rate of convergence for Birkhoff sums of a certain class of observables.
We consider the simple random walk in i.i.d. nonnegative potentials on the multidimensional cubic lattice. Our goal is to investigate the cost paid by the simple random walk for traveling from the origin to a remote location in a landscape of potentials. In particular, we obtain concentration inequalities for the travel cost in unbounded nonnegative potentials.
We study the free energy and its relevant quantity for the directed polymer in random environment. The polymer is allowed to make unbounded jumps and the environment is given by the Bernoulli variables. We first establish the concentration of the ground state energy of polymer at zero temperature. Secondly, we also prove the same property of the free energy at finite temperature. In the proof, we use the fact that the maximum jump of any polymer nearly minimizing energy is not too large with high probability. This is an interesting property itself from the first passage percolation viewpoint.
Here we obtain the exact asymptotics for large and moderate deviations, strong law of large numbers and central limit theorem for chains with unbounded variable length memory.
We consider binary infinite order stochastic chains perturbed by a random noise. This means that at each time step, the value assumed by the chain can be randomly and independently flipped with a small fixed probability. We show that the transition probabilities of the perturbed chain are uniformly close to the corresponding transition probabilities of the original chain. As a consequence, in the case of stochastic chains with unbounded but otherwise finite variable length memory, we show that it is possible to recover the context tree of the original chain, using a suitable version of the alg…
We prove an extension of McDiarmid's inequality for metric spaces with unbounded diameter. To this end, we introduce the notion of the {\em subgaussian diameter}, which is a distribution-dependent refinement of the metric diameter. Our technique provides an alternative approach to that of Kutin and Niyogi's method of weakly difference-bounded functions, and yields nontrivial, dimension-free results in some interesting cases where the former does not. As an application, we give apparently the first generalization bound in the algorithmic stability setting that holds for unbounded loss functions…
We present a new perfect simulation algorithm for stationary chains having unbounded variable length memory. This is the class of infnite memory chains for which the family of transition probabilities is represented by a probabilistic context tree. We do not assume any continuity condition: our condition is expressed in terms of the structure of the context tree. More precisely, the length of the contexts is a deterministic function of the distance to the last occurrence of some determined string of symbols. It turns out that the resulting class of chains can be seen as a natural extension of …
Non-Gaussian concentration estimates are obtained for invariant probability measures of reversible Markov processes. We show that the functional inequalities approach combined with a suitable Lyapunov condition allows us to circumvent the classical Lipschitz assumption of the observables. Our method is general and covers diffusions as well as pure-jump Markov processes on unbounded spaces.
We study Talagrand concentration and Poincaré type inequalities for unbounded pure jump Markov processes. In particular we focus on processes with degenerate jumps that depend on the past of the whole system, based on the model introduced by Galves and Löcherbach in \cite{G-L}, in order to describe the activity of a biological neural network. As a result we obtain exponential rates of convergence to equilibrium.
This paper is devoted to uniform versions of the Hanson-Wright inequality for a random vector $X \in \mathbb{R}^n$ with independent subgaussian components. The core technique of the paper is based on the entropy method combined with truncations of both gradients of functions of interest and of the coordinates of $X$ itself. Our results recover, in particular, the classic uniform bound of Talagrand (1996) for Rademacher chaoses and the more recent uniform result of Adamczak (2015), which holds under certain rather strong assumptions on the distribution of $X$. We provide several applications of…
The concentration inequality approach for normal approximation by Stein's method is generalized to the multivariate setting. We use this approach to prove a non-smooth function distance for multivariate normal approximation for standardized sums of $k$-dimensional independent random vectors $W=\sum_{i=1}^n X_i$ with an error bound of order $k^{1/2}γ$ where $γ=\sum_{i=1}^n E|X_i|^3$. For sums of locally dependent (unbounded) random vectors, we obtain a fourth moment bound which is typically of order $O_k(1/\sqrt{n})$, as well as a third moment bound which is typically of order $O_k(\log n/\sqrt…
We prove regenerative properties for the linear Hawkes process under minimal assumptions on the transfer function, which may have unbounded support. These results are applicable to sliding window statistical estimators. We exploit independence in the Poisson cluster point process decomposition, and the regeneration times are not stopping times for the Hawkes process. The regeneration time is interpreted as the renewal time at zero of a M/G/infinity queue, which yields a formula for its Laplace transform. When the transfer function admits some exponential moments, we stochastically dominate the…
We obtain moment and Gaussian bounds for general Lipschitz functions evaluated along the sample path of a Markov chain. We treat Markov chains on general (possibly unbounded) state spaces via a coupling method. If the first moment of the coupling time exists, then we obtain a variance inequality. If a moment of order 1+epsilon of the coupling time exists, then depending on the behavior of the stationary distribution, we obtain higher moment bounds. This immediately implies polynomial concentration inequalities. In the case that a moment of order 1+epsilon is finite uniformly in the starting po…
In this work, we consider the regularity property of stochastic convolutions for a class of abstract linear stochastic retarded functional differential equations with unbounded operator coefficients. We first establish some useful estimates on fundamental solutions which are time delay versions of those on $C_0$-semigroups. To this end, we develop a scheme of constructing the resolvent operators for the integrodifferential equations of Volterra type since the equation under investigation is of this type in each subinterval describing the segment of its solution. Then we apply these estimates t…
This paper is composed of two main results concerning chains of infinite order which are not necessarily continuous. The first one is a decomposition of the transition probability kernel as a countable mixture of unbounded probabilistic context trees. This decomposition is used to design a simulation algorithm which works as a combination of the algorithms given by Comets et al. (2002) and Gallo (2009). The second main result gives sufficient conditions on the kernel for this algorithm to stop after an almost surely finite number of steps. Direct consequences of this last result are existence …
We consider a random geometric graph with vertices sampled from a probability measure supported on $\mathbb R^d$, and study its connectivity. We show the graph is typically disconnected, unless the sampling density has superexponential decay. In the later setting, we identify an asymptotic threshold value for the radius parameter of the graph such that, for radius values beyond the threshold, some concentration properties hold for the sampled points of the graph, while the graph is disconnected for radius values below the same threshold. Properties of point processes are well-known to be close…
