We present an IoT home network visualizer that utilizes virtual reality (VR). This prototype demonstrates the potential that VR has to aid in the understanding of home IoT networks. This is particularly important due the increased number of household devices now connected to the Internet. This prototype is able to function in a standard display or a VR headset. A prototype was developed to aid in the understanding of home IoT networks for homeowners.
Designing future IoT ecosystems requires new approaches and perspectives to understand everyday practices. While researchers recognize the importance of understanding social aspects of everyday objects, limited studies have explored the possibilities of combining data-driven patterns with human interpretations to investigate emergent relationships among objects. This work presents Thing Constellation Visualizer (thingCV), a novel interactive tool for visualizing the social network of objects based on their co-occurrence as computed from a large collection of photos. ThingCV enables perspective…
Smart home Internet of Things (IoT) devices are rapidly increasing in popularity, with more households including Internet-connected devices that continuously monitor user activities. In this study, we conduct eleven semi-structured interviews with smart home owners, investigating their reasons for purchasing IoT devices, perceptions of smart home privacy risks, and actions taken to protect their privacy from those external to the home who create, manage, track, or regulate IoT devices and/or their data. We note several recurring themes. First, users' desires for convenience and connectedness d…
Voice control in the smart home is commonplace, enabling the convenient control of smart home Internet of Things hubs, gateways and devices, along with information seeking dialogues. Cloud-based voice assistants are used to facilitate the interaction, yet privacy concerns surround the cloud analysis of data. To what extent can voice control be performed using purely local computation, to ensure user data remains private? In this paper we present a taxonomy of the voice control technologies present in commercial smart home systems. We first review literature on the topic, and summarise relevant…
With the growing advances in the Internet of Things (IoT) technology, IoT device management platforms are becoming increasingly important. We conducted a web-based survey and usability study with 43 participants who use IoT devices frequently to: 1) examine their smart home IoT usage patterns and privacy preferences, and 2) evaluate a web-based prototype for smart home IoT device management. We found that participants perceived privacy as more important than the convenience afforded by the IoT devices. Based on their average scores of privacy vs. convenience importance, participants with low p…
Population aging in Brazil and in the world occurs at the same time of advances and evolutions in technology. Thus, opportunities for new solutions arise for the elderly, such as innovations in Home Care. With the Internet of Things, it is possible to improve the elderly autonomy, safety and quality of life. However, the design of IoT solutions for elderly Home Care poses new challenges. In this context, this technical report aims to detail activities developed as a case study to evaluate the IoT-PMHCS Method, which was developed in the context of the Master's program in Computer Science at UN…
In this paper we give a brief overview of our approaches and ongoing work for future directions of the Internet of Things (IoT) with a focus on the IoT in the home. We highlight some of our activities including tools and methods for an ideation-driven approach as well as for an implications-driven approach. We point to some findings of workshops and empirical field-studies. We show examples for new classes of idiosyncratic IoT devices, how implications emerge by (mis)using sensor data and how users interacted with IoT systems in shared spaces.
In recent years the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) has evolved to connect commercial gadgets together with the medical field to facilitate an unprecedented range of accessibility. The development of medical devices connected to internet of things has been praised for the potential of alleviating the strain on the modern healthcare system by giving users the opportunity to reside in the home during treatment or recovery. With the IoT becoming more prevalent and available at a commercial level, there exists room for integration into emerging, intelligent environments such as smart homes…
The automated home referred to as Smart Home is expected to offer fully customized services to its residents, reducing the amount of home labor, thus improving human beings' welfare. Service robots and Internet of Things (IoT) play the key roles in the development of Smart Home. The service provision with these two main components in a Smart Home environment requires: 1) learning and reasoning algorithms and 2) the integration of robot and IoT systems. Conventional computational intelligence-based learning and reasoning algorithms do not successfully manage dynamic changes in the Smart Home da…
There has been increasing interest in deploying IoT devices to study human behaviour in locations such as homes and offices. Such devices can be deployed in a laboratory or `in the wild' in natural environments. The latter allows one to collect behavioural data that is not contaminated by the artificiality of a laboratory experiment. Using IoT devices in ordinary environments also brings the benefits of reduced cost, as compared with lab experiments, and less disturbance to the participants' daily routines which in turn helps with recruiting them into the research. However, in this case, it is…
Recent advances in Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and the reduction in the cost of sensors have encouraged the development of smart environments, such as smart homes. Smart homes can offer home assistance services to improve the quality of life, autonomy and health of their residents, especially for the elderly and dependent. To provide such services, a smart home must be able to understand the daily activities of its residents. Techniques for recognizing human activity in smart homes are advancing daily. But new challenges are emerging every day. In this paper, we present recent algori…
The Internet of Things (IoT) is increasingly present in many family homes, yet it is unclear precisely how well families understand the cyber security threats and risks of using such devices, and how possible it is for them to educate themselves on these topics. Using a survey of 553 parents and interviews with 25 families in the UK, we find that families do not consider home IoT devices to be significantly different in terms of threats than more traditional home computers, and believe the major risks to be largely mitigated through consumer protection regulation. As a result, parents focus on…
With the tremendous progress in sensing and IoT infrastructure, it is foreseeable that IoT systems will soon be available for commercial markets, such as in people's homes. In this paper, we present a deployment study using sensors attached to household objects to capture the resourcefulness of three individuals. The concept of resourcefulness highlights the ability of humans to repurpose objects spontaneously for a different use case than was initially intended. It is a crucial element for human health and wellbeing, which is of great interest for various aspects of HCI and design research. T…

This chapter draws from across the foregoing chapters discussing many core HDI approaches and disciplinary perspectives to consider the specific application of HDI in home network security. While much work has considered the challenges of securing in home IoT devices and their communications, especially for those with limited power or computational capacity, scant attention has been paid by the research community to home network security, and its acceptability and usability, from the viewpoint of ordinary citizens. It will be clear that we need a radical transformation in our approach to desig…
Insecure connected devices can cause serious threats not just to smart home owners, but also the underlying infrastructural network as well. There has been increasing academic and regulatory interest in addressing cybersecurity risks from both the standpoint of Internet of Things (IoT) vendors and that of end-users. In addition to the current data protection and network security legal frameworks, for example, the UK government has initiated the 'Secure by Design' campaign. While there has been work on how organisations and individuals manage their own cybersecurity risks, it remains unclear to…
The popularity of voice-controlled smart speakers with intelligent personal assistants (IPAs) like the Amazon Echo and their increasing use as an interface for other Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in the home provides opportunities to study smart speakers as an emerging and ubiquitous IoT device. Prior research has studied how smart speaker usage has unfolded in homes and how the devices have been integrated into people's daily routines. In this context, researchers have also observed instances of smart speakers' 'black box' behaviour. In this position paper, we present findings from a …
We consider a smart home or smart office environment with a number of IoT devices connected and passing data between one another. The footprints of the data transferred can provide valuable information about the devices, which can be used to (a) identify the IoT devices and (b) in case of failure, to identify the correct replacements for these devices. In this paper, we generate the embeddings for IoT devices in a smart home using Word2Vec, and explore the possibility of having a similar concept for IoT devices, aka IoT2Vec. These embeddings can be used in a number of ways, such as to find sim…
The proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices for consumer "smart" homes raises concerns about user privacy. We present a survey method based on the Contextual Integrity (CI) privacy framework that can quickly and efficiently discover privacy norms at scale. We apply the method to discover privacy norms in the smart home context, surveying 1,731 American adults on Amazon Mechanical Turk. For $2,800 and in less than six hours, we measured the acceptability of 3,840 information flows representing a combinatorial space of smart home devices sending consumer information to first and third-…
