Quantum optimal control has numerous important applications ranging from pulse shaping in magnetic-resonance imagining to laser control of chemical reactions and quantum computing. Our objective is to address two major challenges that have limited the success of applications of quantum optimal control so far: non-commutativity inherent in quantum systems and non-convexity of quantum optimal control problems involving more than three quantum levels. Methodologically, we address the non-commutativity of the control Hamiltonian at different times by the use of Magnus expansion. To tackle the non-convexity, we employ non-commutative polynomial optimisation and non-commutative geometry. As a result, we present the first globally convergent methods for quantum optimal control.
The solution of a two level system driven by a Laser in the adiabatic limit is determined using third order Magnus expansion. We made the assumption that the laser is on resonance or close to resonance with the Bohr transition. As a consequence of which we are able to obtain a Hamiltonian which commute with itself at different times. We solve the problem using the Sylvester Formula where we make use of the eigenvalues.
In 1932, Fermi presented a two-atom model for determining whether quantum mechanics is consistent with causality, and concluded that indeed it is. In the late 1960's, Shirokov and others found that Fermi's approximations may not have been sound, and when corrected, Fermi's model shows non-causal behavior. We show that if instead of time-dependent perturbation theory, the Magnus expansion is used to approximate the time-evolution operator, causality does follow.
We discuss the Bloch-Messiah decomposition for the broadband squeezed light generated by type-I parametric down-conversion with monochromatic pump. Using an exact solution for this process, we evaluate the squeezing parameters and the corresponding squeezing eigenmodes. Next, we consider the Magnus expansion of the quantum-mechanical evolution operator for this process and obtain its first three approximation orders. Using these approximated solutions, we evaluate the corresponding approximations for the Bloch-Messiah decomposition. Our results allow us to conclude that the first-order approxi…
Using the Magnus expansion to the fourth order, we obtain analytic expressions for the atomic state of a two-level system driven by a laser pulse of arbitrary shape with small pulse area. We also determine the limitation of our obtained formulas due to limited range of convergence of the Magnus series. We compare our method to the recently developed method of Rostovtsev et al. (PRA 2009, 79, 063833) for several detunings. Our analysis shows that our technique based on the Magnus expansion can be used as a complementary method to the one in PRA 2009.
The Floquet-Magnus expansion is a useful tool to calculate an effective Hamiltonian for periodically driven systems. In this study, we investigate the convergence of the expansion for a one-body nonlinear system in a continuous space, a driven anharmonic oscillator. In this model, all eigenstates of the time evolution operator are found to be localized in energy space, and the expectation value of the energy is bounded from above. We first propose a general procedure to estimate the radius of convergence of the Floquet-Magnus expansion for periodically driven systems with an unbounded energy s…
We derive a Magnus expansion for a frequency chirped quantum two-level system. We obtain a time-independent effective Hamiltonian which generates a stroboscopic time evolution. At lowest order the according dynamics is identical to results from using a rotating wave approximation. We determine, furthermore, also the next higher order corrections within our expansion scheme in correspondence to the Bloch-Siegert shifts for harmonically driven systems. Importantly, our scheme can be extended to more complicated systems, i.e. even many-body systems.
The Floquet eigenvalue problem is analyzed for periodically driven Friedrichs models on discrete and continuous space. In the high-frequency regime, there exists a Floquet bound state consistent with the Floquet-Magnus expansion in the discrete Friedrichs model, while it is not the case in the continuous model. In the latter case, however, the bound state predicted by the Floquet-Magnus expansion appears as a metastable state whose lifetime diverges in the limit of large frequencies. We obtain the lifetime by evaluating the imaginary part of the quasi-energy of the Floquet resonant state. In t…
The explicit criterion is derived in detail for the convergence of the Magnus expansion and the existence of the Magnus solution in the interaction picture, i.e., the exponential propagator in the weakly coupled spin (I=1/2) system SnAMX... (n=1,2,3,...) in which only spin group S is subjected to a time-dependent shaped selective radiofrequency pulse. The derivation is built on the same scheme as the Maricq's (J. Chem. Phys. 86 (1987) 5647). It is shown that the criterion depends only upon amplitude of the time-dependent field applied to the system, and the Magnus expansion converges and the M…
We apply the Picard and Magnus expansions to both the semiclassical and the quantum Rabi model, with a switchable matter-field coupling. The case of the quantum Rabi model ia a paradigmatic example of finite-time quantum electrodynamics (QED), and in this case we build an intuitive diagrammatic representation of the Picard series. In particular, we show that regular oscillations in the mean number of photons, ascribed to the dynamical Casimir effect (DCE) for the the generation of photons and to the anti-DCE for their destruction, take place at twice the resonator frequency $ω$. Such oscillati…
We use a Magnus approximation at the level of the equations of motion for a harmonic system with a time-dependent frequency, to find an expansion for its in-out effective action, and a unitary expansion for the Bogoliubov transformation between in and out states. The dissipative effects derived therefrom are compared with the ones obtained from perturbation theory in powers of the time-dependent piece in the frequency, and with those derived using multiple scale analysis in systems with parametric resonance. We also apply the Magnus expansion to the in-in effective action, to construct reality…
We present a systematic, perturbative method for correcting quantum gates to suppress errors that take the target system out of a chosen subspace. It addresses the generic problem of non-adiabatic errors in adiabatic evolution and state preparation, as well as general leakage errors due to spurious couplings to undesirable states. The method is based on the Magnus expansion: by correcting control pulses, we modify the Magnus expansion of an initially-given, imperfect unitary in such a way that the desired evolution is obtained. Applications to adiabatic quantum state transfer, superconducting …
This work explores a fundamental dynamical structure for a wide range of many-body quantum systems under periodic driving. Generically, in the thermodynamic limit, such systems are known to heat up to infinite temperature states after infinite-time evolution, irrespective of dynamical details. In the present study, instead of considering infinitely long-time scale, we aim to provide a framework to understand the long but finite time behavior, namely the transient dynamics. In the analysis, we focus on the Floquet-Magnus (FM) expansion that gives a formal expression of the effective Hamiltonian…

A simple fourth order propagator based on the Magnus expansion in the Liouville space: Application to a $Λ$-system and assessment of the rotating wave approximation
A novel expansion -- which generalizes Magnus expansion -- of the evolution operator associated with a (in general, time-dependent) perturbed Hamiltonian is introduced. It is shown that it has a wide range of possible solutions that can be fitted according to computational convenience. The time-independent and the adiabatic case are studied in detail.

We develop perturbative methods to study and control dynamical phenomena related to exceptional points in Non-Hermitian systems. In particular, we show how to find perturbative solutions based on the Magnus expansion that accurately describe the evolution of non-Hermitian systems when encircling an exceptional point. This allows us to use the recently proposed Magnus-based strategy for control to design fast non-reciprocal, topological operations whose fidelity error is orders of magnitude smaller than their much slower adiabatic counterparts.
For the unitary operator, solution of the Schroedinger equation corresponding to a time-varying Hamiltonian, the relation between the Magnus and the product of exponentials expansions can be expressed in terms of a system of first order differential equations in the parameters of the two expansions. A method is proposed to compute such differential equations explicitly and in a closed form.
We consider a clean quantum system subject to strong periodic driving. The existence of a dominant energy scale, $h_D^x$, can generate considerable structure in an effective description of a system which, in the absence of the drive, is non-integrable, interacting, and does not host localization. In particular, we uncover points of freezing in the space of drive parameters (frequency and amplitude). At those points, the dynamics is severely constrained due to the emergence of an almost exact local conserved quantity, which scars the {\it entire} Floquet spectrum by preventing the system from h…
This work establishes a connection between canonical perturbation series in quantum mechanics and a Kato expansion for the resolvent of the Liouville superoperator. Our approach leads to an explicit expression for a generator of a block-diagonalizing Dyson's ordered exponential in arbitrary perturbation order. Unitary intertwining of perturbed and unperturbed averaging superprojectors allows for a description of ambiguities in the generator and block-diagonalized Hamiltonian. We compare the efficiency of the corresponding computational algorithm with the efficiencies of the Van Vleck and Magnu…
Magnus expansion is used to identify effective Hamiltonians describing the coarse-grained dynamics of more complex problems. Here, we apply this method to a two-level system driven by an and AC field. We derive Stark and Bloch-Siegert shifs of both diagonal and off-diagonal entries of the Hamiltonian as a result of coarse-graining only.
We perform a functional expansion of the fidelity between two unitary matrices in order to find the necessary conditions for the robust implementation of a target gate. Comparison of these conditions with those obtained from the Magnus expansion and Dyson series shows that they are equivalent in first order. By exploiting techniques from robust design optimization, we account for issues of experimental feasibility by introducing an additional criterion to the search for control pulses. This search is accomplished by exploring the competition between the multiple objectives in the implementatio…
We obtain exact solutions of the 2D Schrödinger equation with the Singular Even-Power and Inverse-Power Potentials in non-commutative complex space, using the Power-series expansion method. Hence we can say that the Schrödinger equation in non-commutative complex space describes to the particles with spin (1/2)in an external uniform magnitic field. Where the noncommutativity play the role of magnetic field with created the total magnetic moment of particle with spin 1/2, who in turn shifted the spectrum of energy. Such effects are similar to the Zeeman splitting in a commutative space.
We consider the evolution of a quantum state of a Hamiltonian which is parametrically perturbed via a term proportional to the adiabatic parameter λ(t). Starting with the Pechukas-Yukawa mapping of the energy eigenvalues evolution on a generalised Calogero-Sutherland model of 1D classical gas, we consider the adiabatic approximation with two different expansions of the quantum state in powers of dλ/dt and compare them with a direct numerical simulation. We show that one of these expansions (Magnus series) is especially convenient for the description of non-adiabatic evolution of the system. Ap…
We present a scalable scheme to design optimized soft pulses and pulse sequences for coherent control of interacting quantum many-body systems. The scheme is based on the cluster expansion and the time dependent perturbation theory implemented numerically. This approach offers a dramatic advantage in numerical efficiency, and it is also more convenient than the commonly used Magnus expansion, especially when dealing with higher order terms. We illustrate the scheme by designing 2nd-order pi-pulses and a 6th-order 8-pulse refocusing sequence for a chain of qubits with nearest-neighbor couplings…
