We consider a quench in a free-fermion chain by joining two homogeneous half-chains via a defect. The time evolution of the entanglement negativity is studied between adjacent segments surrounding the defect. In case of equal initial fillings, the negativity grows logarithmically in time and essentially equals one-half of the Rényi mutual information with index $α= 1/2$ in the limit of large segments. In sharp contrast, in the biased case one finds a linear increase followed by the saturation at an extensive value for both quantities, which is due to the backscattering from the defect and can be reproduced in a quasiparticle picture. Furthermore, a closer inspection of the subleading corrections reveals that the negativity and the mutual information have a small but finite difference in the steady state. Finally, we also study a similar quench in the XXZ spin chain via density-matrix renormalization group methods and compare the results for the negativity to the fermionic case.
We study entanglement properties in a nonequilibrium steady state of a free-fermion chain, that emerges after connecting two half-chains prepared at different temperatures. The entanglement negativity and the Rényi mutual information between two adjacent intervals scale logarithmically in the system size, with prefactors that we calculate analytically as a function of the bath temperatures. In particular, we show that the negativity and the Rényi mutual information with index $α=1/2$ are described by different prefactors, and thus the two quantities provide inequivalent information about the s…
We show that the bipartite logarithmic entanglement negativity (EN) of quantum spin models obeys an area law at all nonzero temperatures. We develop numerical linked cluster (NLC) expansions for the `area-law' logarithmic entanglement negativity as a function of temperature and other parameters. For one-dimensional models the results of NLC are compared with exact diagonalization on finite systems and are found to agree very well. The NLC results are also obtained for two dimensional XXZ and transverse-field Ising models. In all cases, we find a sudden onset (or sudden death) of negativity at …
We study the scaling properties of the ground-state entanglement between finite subsystems of infinite two-dimensional free lattice models, as measured by the logarithmic negativity. For adjacent regions with a common boundary, we observe that the negativity follows a strict area law for a lattice of harmonic oscillators, whereas for fermionic hopping models the numerical results indicate a multiplicative logarithmic correction. In this latter case, we conjecture a formula for the prefactor of the area-law violating term, which is entirely determined by the geometries of the Fermi surface and …
We study the time evolution of the logarithmic negativity after a global quantum quench. In a 1+1 dimensional conformal invariant field theory, we consider the negativity between two intervals which can be either adjacent or disjoint. We show that the negativity follows the quasi-particle interpretation for the spreading of entanglement. We check and generalise our findings with a systematic analysis of the negativity after a quantum quench in the harmonic chain, highlighting two peculiar lattice effects: the late birth and the sudden death of entanglement.
We study the entanglement in a chain of harmonic oscillators driven out of equilibrium by preparing the two sides of the system at different temperatures, and subsequently joining them together. The steady state is constructed explicitly and the logarithmic negativity is calculated between two adjacent segments of the chain. We find that, for low temperatures, the steady-state entanglement is a sum of contributions pertaining to left- and right-moving excitations emitted from the two reservoirs. In turn, the steady-state entanglement is a simple average of the Gibbs-state values and thus its s…
Negativity is an entanglement monotone frequently used to quantify entanglement in bipartite states. Because negativity is a non-analytic function of a density matrix, existing methods used in the physics literature are insufficient to compute its derivatives. To this end we develop techniques in the calculus of complex, patterned matrices and use them to conduct a perturbative analysis of negativity in terms of arbitrary variations of the density operator. The result is an easy-to-implement expansion that can be carried out to all orders. On the way we provide convenient representations of th…
In this letter we study the negativity of one dimensional free fermions. We derive the general form of the $\mathbb{Z}_{N}$ symmetric term in moments of the partial transposed (reduced) density matrix, which is an algebraic function of the end points of the system. Such a path integral turns out to be a convenient tool for making estimations for the negativity.
In the context of ground states of quantum many-body systems, the locality of entanglement between connected regions of space is directly tied to the locality of the corresponding entanglement Hamiltonian: the latter is dominated by local, few-body terms. In this work, we introduce the negativity Hamiltonian as the (non hermitian) effective Hamiltonian operator describing the logarithm of the partial transpose of a many-body system. This allows us to address the connection between entanglement and operator locality beyond the paradigm of bipartite pure systems. As a first step in this directio…
Quantum entanglement is fragile to thermal fluctuations, which raises the question whether finite temperature phase transitions support long-range entanglement similar to their zero temperature counterparts. Here we use quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study the third Renyi negativity, a generalization of entanglement negativity, as a proxy of mixed-state entanglement in the 2D transverse field Ising model across its finite temperature phase transition. We find that the area-law coefficient of the Renyi negativity is singular across the transition, while its subleading constant is zero withi…
We study the time evolution of the entanglement negativity after a local quantum quench in (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs), which we introduce by suddenly joining two initially decoupled CFTs at their endpoints. We calculate the negativity evolution for both adjacent intervals and disjoint intervals explicitly. For two adjacent intervals, the entanglement negativity grows logarithmically in time right after the quench. After developing a plateau-like feature, the entanglement negativity drops to the ground-state value. For the case of two spatially separated intervals, a ligh…
We study the scaling of the traces of the integer powers of the partially transposed reduced density matrix and of the entanglement negativity for two spin blocks as function of their length and separation in the critical Ising chain. For two adjacent blocks, we show that tensor network calculations agree with universal conformal field theory (CFT) predictions. In the case of two disjoint blocks the CFT predictions are recovered only after taking into account the finite size corrections induced by the finite length of the blocks.
We study the ground-state entanglement Hamiltonian of several disjoint intervals for the massless Dirac fermion on the half-line. Its structure consists of a local part and a bi-local term that couples each point to another one in each other interval. The bi-local operator can be either diagonal or mixed in the fermionic chiralities and it is sensitive to the boundary conditions. The knowledge of such entanglement Hamiltonian is the starting point to evaluate the negativity Hamiltonian, i.e. the logarithm of the partially transposed reduced density matrix, which is an operatorial characterisat…
The entanglement entropy and the logarithmic negativity can be computed in quantum field theory through a method based on the replica limit. Performing these analytic continuations in some cases is beyond our current knowledge, even for simple models. We employ a numerical method based on rational interpolations to extrapolate the entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals for the conformal field theories given by the free compact boson and the Ising model. The case of three disjoint intervals is studied for the Ising model and the non compact free massless boson. For the latter model, the…
We investigate entanglement dynamics in continuously monitored open quantum systems featuring current-carrying non-equilibrium states. We focus on a prototypical one-dimensional model of boundary-driven non-interacting fermions with monitoring of the local density, whose average Lindblad dynamics features a well-studied ballistic to diffusive crossover in transport. Here we analyze the dynamics of the fermionic negativity, mutual information, and purity along different quantum trajectories. We show that monitoring this boundary-driven system enhances its entanglement negativity at long times, …
We propose a diagnostic for finite temperature topological order using `topological entanglement negativity', the long-range component of a mixed-state entanglement measure. As a demonstration, we study the toric code model in $d$ spatial dimension for $d$=2,3,4, and find that when topological order survives thermal fluctuations, it possesses a non-zero topological entanglement negativity, whose value is equal to the topological entanglement entropy at zero temperature. Furthermore, we show that the Gibbs state of 2D and 3D toric code at any non-zero temperature, and that of 4D toric code abov…
The entanglement between noncomplementary blocks of a many-body system, where a part of the system forms an ignored environment, is a largely untouched problem without analytic results. We rectify this gap by studying the logarithmic negativity between two macroscopic sets of spins in an arbitrary tripartition of a collection of mutually interacting spins described by the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick Hamiltonian. This entanglement measure is found to be finite and universal at the critical point for any tripartition whereas it diverges for a bipartition. In this limiting case, we show that it behaves …
In this paper, we study the entanglement structure of mixed states in quantum many-body systems using the $\textit{negativity contour}$, a local measure of entanglement that determines which real-space degrees of freedom in a subregion are contributing to the logarithmic negativity and with what magnitude. We construct an explicit contour function for Gaussian states using the fermionic partial-transpose. We generalize this contour function to generic many-body systems using a natural combination of derivatives of the logarithmic negativity. Though the latter negativity contour function is not…
We study the entanglement behavior of a random unitary circuit punctuated by projective measurements at the measurement-driven phase transition in one spatial dimension. We numerically study the logarithmic entanglement negativity of two disjoint intervals and find that it scales as a power of the cross-ratio. We investigate two systems: (1) Clifford circuits with projective measurements, and (2) Haar random local unitary circuit with projective measurements. Remarkably, we identify a power-law behavior of entanglement negativity at the critical point. Previous results of entanglement entropy …
We study the moments of the partial transpose of the reduced density matrix of two intervals for the free massless Dirac fermion. By means of a direct calculation based on coherent state path integral, we find an analytic form for these moments in terms of the Riemann theta function. We show that the moments of arbitrary order are equal to the same quantities for the compactified boson at the self-dual point. These equalities imply the non trivial result that also the negativity of the free fermion and the self-dual boson are equal.
The presence of a global internal symmetry in a quantum many-body system is reflected in the fact that the entanglement between its subparts is endowed with an internal structure, namely it can be decomposed as sum of contributions associated to each symmetry sector. The symmetry resolution of entanglement measures provides a formidable tool to probe the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of quantum systems. Here, we study the time evolution of charge-imbalance-resolved negativity after a global quench in the context of free-fermion systems, complementing former works for the symmetry-resolved entang…
We propose entanglement negativity as a fine-grained probe of measurement-induced criticality. We motivate this proposal in stabilizer states, where for two disjoint subregions, comparing their "mutual negativity" and their mutual information leads to a precise distinction between bipartite and multipartite entanglement. In a measurement-only stabilizer circuit that maps exactly to two-dimensional critical percolation, we show that the mutual information and the mutual negativity are governed by boundary conformal fields of different scaling dimensions at long distances. We then consider a cla…
Phase transitions at a finite (i.e. non-zero) temperature are typically dominated by classical correlations, in contrast to zero temperature transitions where quantum mechanics plays an essential role. Therefore, it is natural to ask if there are any signatures of a finite temperature phase transition in measures that are sensitive only to quantum correlations. Here we study one such measure, namely, entanglement negativity, across finite temperature phase transitions in several exactly solvable Hamiltonians and find that it is a singular function of temperature across the transition. As an as…
In the presence of symmetry, entanglement measures of quantum many-body states can be decomposed into contributions arising from distinct symmetry sectors. Here we investigate the decomposability of negativity, a measure of entanglement between two parts of a generally open system in a mixed state. While the entanglement entropy of a subsystem within a closed system can be resolved according to its total preserved charge, we find that negativity of two subsystems may be decomposed into contributions associated with their charge imbalance. We show that this charge-imbalance decomposition of the…
In this paper, we calculate the entanglement negativity in free-fermion systems by use of the overlap matrices. For a tripartite system, if the ground state can be factored into triples of modes, we show that the partially transposed reduced density matrix can be factorized and the entanglement negativity has a simple form. However, the factorability of the ground state in a tripartite system does not hold in general. In this situation, the partially transposed reduced density matrix can be expressed in terms of the Kronecker product of matrices. We explicitly compute the entanglement negativi…
Generic many-body systems coupled to an environment lose their quantum entanglement due to decoherence and evolve to a mixed state with only classical correlations. Here, we show that measurements can stabilize quantum entanglement within open quantum systems. Specifically, in random unitary circuits with dephasing at the boundary, we find both numerically and analytically that projective measurements performed at a small nonvanishing rate results in a steady state with an $L^{1/3}$ power-law scaling entanglement negativity within the system. Using an analytical mapping to a statistical mechan…
The entanglement entropy of free fermions with a Fermi surface is known to obey a logarithmic scaling and violate the area law in all dimensions. Here, we would like to see how temperature affects the logarithmic scaling behavior. To this end, we compute the entanglement negativity of free fermions using the fermionic partial transpose developed in our earlier paper [Phys. Rev. B 95, 165101 (2017)]. In one dimension, we analytically derive the leading order term in the finite-temperature entanglement negativity and show how the entanglement negativity indicates a crossover from a quantum entan…
We study the growth of entanglement between two adjacent regions in a tripartite, one-dimensional many-body system after a quantum quench. Combining a replica trick with a space-time duality transformation, we derive an exact, universal relation between the entanglement negativity and Renyi-1/2 mutual information which holds at times shorter than the sizes of all subsystems. Our proof is directly applicable to any translationally invariant local quantum circuit, i.e., any lattice system in discrete time characterised by local interactions, irrespective of the nature of its dynamics. Our deriva…
We develop a systematic method to extract the negativity in the ground state of a 1+1 dimensional relativistic quantum field theory, using a path integral formalism to construct the partial transpose rho_A^{T_2} of the reduced density matrix of a subsystem A=A1 U A2, and introducing a replica approach to obtain its trace norm which gives the logarithmic negativity E=ln||ρ_A^{T_2}||. This is shown to reproduce standard results for a pure state. We then apply this method to conformal field theories, deriving the result E\sim(c/4) ln(L1 L2/(L1+L2)) for the case of two adjacent intervals of length…
The recent direct experimental measurement of quantum entanglement paves the way towards a better understanding of many-body quantum systems and their correlations. Nevertheless, the experimental and theoretical advances had so far been predominantly limited to bosonic systems. Here, we study fermionic systems. Using experimental setups where multiple copies of the same state are prepared, arbitrary order Renyi entanglement entropies and entanglement negativities can be extracted by utilizing spatially-uniform beam splitters and on-site occupation measurement. As an example, we simulate the us…
We investigate the logarithmic negativity in strongly-disordered spin chains in the random-singlet phase. We focus on the spin-1/2 random Heisenberg chain and the random XX chain. We find that for two arbitrary intervals the disorder-averaged negativity and the mutual information are proportional to the number of singlets shared between the two intervals. Using the strong-disorder renormalization group (SDRG), we prove that the negativity of two adjacent intervals grows logarithmically with the intervals length. In particular, the scaling behavior is the same as in conformal field theory, but …
The exact nature of the many-body localization transition remains an open question. An aspect which has been posited in various studies is the emergence of scale invariance around this point, however the direct observation of this phenomenon is still absent. Here we achieve this by studying the logarithmic negativity and mutual information between disjoint blocks of varying size across the many-body localization transition. The two length scales, block sizes and the distance between them, provide a clear quantitative probe of scale invariance across different length scales. We find that at the…
We study the logarithmic negativity and the moments of the partial transpose in the ground state of a two dimensional massless harmonic square lattice with nearest neighbour interactions for various configurations of adjacent domains. At leading order for large domains, the logarithmic negativity and the logarithm of the ratio between the generic moment of the partial transpose and the moment of the reduced density matrix at the same order satisfy an area law in terms of the length of the curve shared by the adjacent regions. We give numerical evidences that the coefficient of the area law ter…
The logarithmic negativity of a bipartite quantum state is a widely employed entanglement measure in quantum information theory, due to the fact that it is easy to compute and serves as an upper bound on distillable entanglement. More recently, the $κ$-entanglement of a bipartite state was shown to be the first entanglement measure that is both easily computable and has a precise information-theoretic meaning, being equal to the exact entanglement cost of a bipartite quantum state when the free operations are those that completely preserve the positivity of the partial transpose [Wang and Wild…
We study the dynamics of the entanglement in one dimensional critical quantum systems after a local quench in which two independently thermalized semi-infinite halves are joined to form a homogeneous infinite system and left to evolve unitarily. We show that under certain conditions a nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) is reached instantaneously as soon as the entanglement interval is within the light-cone emanating from the contact point. In this steady state, the exact expressions for the entanglement entropy and the logarithmic negativity are in agreement with the steady state density matri…
We investigate the dynamics of the fermionic logarithmic negativity in a free-fermion chain with a localized loss, which acts as a dissipative impurity. The chain is initially prepared in a generic Fermi sea. In the standard hydrodynamic limit of large subsystems and long times, with their ratio fixed, the negativity between two subsystems is described by a simple formula, which depends only on the effective absorption coefficient of the impurity. The negativity grows linearly at short times, then saturating to a volume-law scaling. Physically, this reflects the continuous production with time…
In this paper we study the increment of the entanglement entropy and of the (replica) logarithmic negativity in a zero-density excited state of a free massive bosonic theory, compared to the ground state. This extends the work of two previous publications by the same authors. We consider the case of two disconnected regions and find that the change in the entanglement entropy depends only on the combined size of the regions and is independent of their connectivity. We subsequently generalize this result to any number of disconnected regions. For the replica negativity we find that its incremen…
We consider the problem of symmetry decomposition of the entanglement negativity in free fermionic systems. Rather than performing the standard partial transpose, we use the partial time-reversal transformation which naturally encodes the fermionic statistics. The negativity admits a resolution in terms of the charge imbalance between the two subsystems. We introduce a normalised version of the imbalance resolved negativity which has the advantage to be an entanglement proxy for each symmetry sector, but may diverge in the limit of pure states for some sectors. Our main focus is then the resol…
In this paper we revisit the question that in what sense empty $AdS_{5}$ black brane geometry can be thought of as RG-flow. We do this by first constructing a holographic $c$-function using causal horizon in the black brane geometry. The UV value of the $c$-function is $a_{UV}$ and then it decreases monotonically to zero at the curvature singularity. Intuitively, the behavior of the $c$-function can be understood if we recognize that the dual CFT is in a thermal state and thermal states are effectively massive with a gap set by the temperature. In field theory, logarithmic entanglement negativ…
We consider the logarithmic negativity of a finite interval embedded in an infinite one dimensional system at finite temperature. We focus on conformal invariant systems and we show that the naive approach based on the calculation of a two-point function of twist fields in a cylindrical geometry yields a wrong result. The correct result is obtained through a four-point function of twist fields in which two auxiliary fields are inserted far away from the interval, and they are sent to infinity only after having taken the replica limit. In this way, we find a universal scaling form for the finit…
We study conformal twist field four-point functions on a $\mathbb Z_N$ orbifold. We examine in detail the case $N=3$ and analyze theories obtained by replicated $N$-times a minimal model with central charge $c<1$. A fastly convergent expansion of the twist field correlation function in terms of sphere conformal blocks with central charge $Nc$ is obtained by exploiting covering map techniques. We discuss extensive applications of the formalism to the entanglement of two disjoint intervals in CFT, in particular we propose a conformal block expansion for the partially transposed reduced density m…
We calculate the $N$ interval replicated negativity for the Ising and free compact boson conformal field theory using correlation functions of branch point twist fields. For some subset $P\subset N$, this is a calculation of $\rm{Tr}(ρ_A^{T_P})^n$ where $n$ is the replica index. This can be reformulated as a calculation of partition functions over superelliptic Riemann surfaces, and for the models in question, this partition function can be expressed in terms of the period matrix of this surface. We detail how to construct the period matrices for these surfaces, giving an analytic expression f…
We study the mixed-state entanglement structure of chaotic quantum many-body systems at late times using the recently developed $\textit{equilibrium approximation}$. A rich entanglement phase diagram emerges when we generalize this technique to evaluate the logarithmic negativity for various universality classes of macroscopically thermalized states. Unlike in the infinite temperature case, when we impose energy constraints at finite temperature, the phase diagrams for the logarithmic negativity and the mutual information become distinct. In particular, we identify a regime where the negativit…
Defects in two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) contain signatures of their characteristics. In this work, we compute the entanglement entropy (EE) and the entanglement negativity (EN) of subsystems in the presence of energy and duality defects in the Ising CFT using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique. We show that the EE for the duality defect exhibits fundamentally different characteristics compared to the energy defect due to the existence of localized and delocalized zero energy modes. Of special interest is the nontrivial `finite-size correction' in the E…
We investigate the spectrum of the partial transpose (negativity spectrum) of two adjacent regions in gapped one-dimensional models. We show that, in the limit of large regions, the negativity spectrum is entirely reconstructed from the entanglement spectrum of the bipartite system. We exploit this result in the XXZ spin chain, for which the entanglement spectrum is known by means of the corner transfer matrix. We find that the negativity spectrum levels are equally spaced, the spacing being half that in the entanglement spectrum. Moreover, the degeneracy of the spectrum is described by elegan…
We consider the logarithmic negativity, a measure of bipartite entanglement, in a general unitary 1+1-dimensional massive quantum field theory, not necessarily integrable. We compute the negativity between a finite region of length $r$ and an adjacent semi-infinite region, and that between two semi-infinite regions separated by a distance $r$. We show that the former saturates to a finite value, and that the latter tends to zero, as $r\rightarrow\infty$. We show that in both cases, the leading corrections are exponential decays in $r$ (described by modified Bessel functions) that are solely co…
We investigate several entanglement-related quantities at finite-temperature criticality in the three-dimensional quantum spherical model, both as a function of temperature $T$ and of the quantum parameter $g$, which measures the strength of quantum fluctuations. While the von Neumann and the Rényi entropies exhibit the volume-law for any $g$ and $T$, the mutual information obeys an area law. The prefactors of the volume-law and of the area-law are regular across the transition, reflecting that universal singular terms vanish at the transition. This implies that the mutual information is domin…
