The electronic band structure-controlled ultrafast demagnetization mechanism in Co2FexMn1-xSi Heusler alloy is underpinned by systematic variation of composition. We find the spin-flip scattering rate controlled by spin density of states at Fermi level is responsible for non-monotonic variation of ultrafast demagnetization time (τM) with x with a maximum at x = 0.4. Furthermore, Gilbert damping constant exhibits an inverse relationship with τM due to the dominance of inter-band scattering mechanism. This establishes a unified mechanism of ultrafast spin dynamics based on Fermi level position.
Engineering of magnetic materials for developing better spintronic applications relies on the control of two key parameters: the spin polarization and the Gilbert damping responsible for the spin angular momentum dissipation. Both of them are expected to affect the ultrafast magnetization dynamics occurring on the femtosecond time scale. Here, we use engineered Co2MnAlxSi1-x Heusler compounds to adjust the degree of spin polarization P from 60 to 100% and investigate how it correlates with the damping. We demonstrate experimentally that the damping decreases when increasing the spin polarizati…
With the goal of pushing Spintronic devices towards faster and faster timescales, we demonstrate, using ab-intio time-dependent density functional theory simulations of bulk Heusler compounds subject to ultrashort intense laser pulses, that the local magnetic moment can increase or decrease in a few femtoseconds. This speed is due to the all optical nature of the process, which transfers spin moment from one sublattice to another. This transfer depends on easily tunable laser parameters. By comparing the spin dynamics of a variety of Heusler (or half-Heusler) compounds, we demonstrate that the…
We follow for the first time the evolution of the spin and orbital angular momentum of a thin Ni film during ultrafast demagnetization, by means of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Both components decrease with a 130 +/- 40 fs time constant upon excitation with a femtosecond laser pulse. Additional x-ray absorption measurements reveal an increase in the spin-orbit interaction by 6 +/- 2 % during this process. This is the experimental demonstration quantifying the importance of spin-orbit mediated processes during the demagnetization.
Femtosecond laser induced ultrafast magnetization dynamics have been studied in multisublattice CoxDy1-x alloys. By performing element and time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy, we distinguish the ultrafast quenching of Co3d and Dy4f magnetic order when the initial temperatures are below (T=150K) or above (T=270K) the temperature of magnetic compensation (Tcomp). In accordance with former element-resolved investigations and theoretical calculations, we observe different dynamics for Co3d and Dy4f spins. In addition we observe that, for a given laser fluence, the demagnetization amplitudes and demag…
We propose a semi-classical model for femtosecond-laser induced demagnetization due to spin-polarized excited electron diffusion in the super-diffusive regime. Our approach treats the finite elapsed time and transport in space between multiple electronic collisions exactly, as well as the presence of several metal films in the sample. Solving the derived transport equation numerically we show that this mechanism accounts for the experimentally observed demagnetization within 200fs in Ni, without the need to invoke any angular momentum dissipation channel.
A dependence of a relaxation rate on the shape of the demagnetized region for a longitudinal evolution of total magnetization to its equilibrium value following the ultrafast demagnetization is demonstrated. This shape-dependence is caused by a motion of the wave front inside the demagnetized region. The contribution of the wave front for spherically symmetric shape of the demagnetized region is up to 3 times and for cylindrically symmetric shape up to 2 times stronger than for one dimensional demagnetized region. This effect can be observed after the demagnetization by a tightly focused femto…
Ever since its discovery in 1996, ultrafast demagnetization has ignited immense research interest due to its scientific rigor and technological potential. A flurry of recent theoretical and experimental investigations has proposed direct and indirect excitation processes in separate systems. However, it still lacks a unified mechanism and remains highly debatable. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate that instead of either direct or indirect interaction, simultaneous and controlled excitation of both direct and indirect mechanisms of demagnetization are possible in a multilayers composed o…
Time-dependent density functional theory is implemented in an all electron solid-state code for the case of fully non-collinear spins. We use this to study laser induced demagnetization in Fe, Co and Ni. It is shown that this demagnetization is a two-step process: excitation of a fraction of electrons followed by spin-flip transitions of the remaining localized electrons. These results successfully explain several experimental features such as the time-lag between the start of the pulse and demagnetization and spin-flip excitations dominating the physics. We further show that it is possible to…
The mechanism underlying femtosecond laser pulse induced ultrafast magnetization dynamics remains elusive despite two decades of intense research on this phenomenon. Most experiments focused so far on characterizing magnetization and charge carrier dynamics, while first direct measurements of structural dynamics during ultrafast demagnetization were reported only very recently. We here present our investigation of the infrared laser pulse induced ultrafast demagnetization process in a thin Ni film, which characterizes simultaneously magnetization and structural dynamics. This is achieved by em…
We theoretically investigate spin-dependent carrier dynamics due to the electron-phonon interaction after ultrafast optical excitation in ferromagnetic metals. We calculate the electron-phonon matrix elements including the spin-orbit interaction in the electronic wave functions and the interaction potential. Using the matrix elements in Boltzmann scattering integrals, the momentum-resolved carrier distributions are obtained by solving their equation of motion numerically. We find that the optical excitation with realistic laser intensities alone leads to a negligible magnetization change, and …
Simultaneous detection of THz emission and transient magneto-optical response is employed to study ultrafast laser-induced magnetization dynamics in multisublattice magnets NdFeCo and GdFeCo amorphous alloys with in-plane magnetic anisotropy. A satisfactory quantitative agreement between the dynamics revealed with the help of these two techniques is obtained for GdFeCo. For NdFeCo the THz emission reveals faster dynamics than the magneto-optical response. This indicates that in addition to spin dynamics of Fe ultrafast laser excitation triggers faster magnetization dynamics of Nd.
Manipulation of the intersublattice interaction strengh (JRE-TM) in rare earth (RE)-transition metal (TM) alloys is a key issue to understand how efficiently the laser-induced angular momentum transfers from 3d to 4f spins and to have a better control of the ultrafast spin dynamics. In this work, the relationships between laser-induced demagnetization process and the intersublattice 3d-4f interaction for the GdCoFe alloys were systematically studied. The ultrafast two-stage demagnetization process could change into a one-stage mode as the angular momentum transferring channel between 3d and 4f…
Ultrafast magnetization dynamics induced by femtosecond laser pulses have been measured in ferrimagnetic Co0.8Gd0.2, Co.74Tb.26 and Co.86Tb.14 alloys. Using element sensitivity of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Co L3, Tb M5 and Gd M5 edges we evidence that the demagnetization dynamics is element dependent. We show that a thermalization time as fast as 280 fs is observed for the rare-earth in the alloy, when the laser excited state temperature is below the compensation temperature. It is limited to 500 fs when the laser excited state temperature is below the Curie temperature (Tc). We…
We report on {\it ab-initio} simulations of the quantum dynamics of electronic charge and spin when subjected to intense laser pulses. By performing separate calculations for a Ni thin film and bulk Ni, we conclude that surface effects have a dramatic influence on amplifying the laser induced demagnetization. We show that the reason for this amplification is due to increased spin-currents on the surface of the thin film. This enhancement is a direct consequence of the broken symmetry originating from the surface formation. We find that the underlying physics of demagnetization, during the earl…
Using a time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) microscope, we observed ultrafast demagnetization of inverse-spinel-type NiCo2O4 (NCO) epitaxial thin films of the inverse spinel type ferrimagnet NCO with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. This microscope uses a pump-probe method, where the sample is pumped at 1030 nm, and magnetic domain images are acquired via MOKE microscopy at 515 nm (the second harmonic). We successfully observed the dynamics of the magnetic domain of the NCO thin film via laser irradiation, and obtained a demagnetization time constant of approximately 0.4 ps. …
We demonstrate ultrafast magnetization dynamics in a 5d transition metal using circularly-polarized x-ray free electron laser in the hard x-ray region. A decay time of light-induced demagnetization of L1${}_0$-FePt was determined to be $τ_\textrm{Pt} = 0.6\ \textrm{ps}$ using time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Pt L${}_3$ edge, whereas magneto-optical Kerr measurements indicated the decay time for total magnetization as $τ_\textrm{total} = 0.1\ \textrm{ps}$. A transient magnetic state with the photo-modulated magnetic coupling between the 3d and 5d elements is firstly demons…
We analyze theoretically the demagnetization dynamics in a ferromagnetic model system due to the interplay of spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron Coulomb scattering. We compute the $k$-resolved electronic reduced spin-density matrix including precessional dynamics around internal spin-orbit and exchange fields as well as the electron-electron Coulomb scattering for densities and spin coherences. Based on a comparison with numerical solutions of the full Boltzmann scattering integrals, we establish that the $k$-resolved reduced spin-density matrix dynamics are well described using a simpl…
When a laser pulse excites a ferromagnet, its spin undergoes a dramatic change. The initial demagnetization process is very fast. Experimentally, it is found that the demagnetization time is related to the spin moment in the sample. In this study, we employ the first-principles method to directly simulate such a process. We use the fixed spin moment method to change the spin moment in ferromagnetic nickel, and then we employ the Liouville equation to couple the laser pulse to the system. We find that in general the dependence of demagnetization time on the spin moment is nonlinear: It decrease…
By using a multiscale approach based on first-principles density functional theory combined with atomistic spin dynamics, we investigate the electronic structure and magnetization dynamics of an inverse Heusler and a Heusler compound and their alloys, i. e. Mn$_{2-x}Z_x$CoAl and Mn$_{2-x}Z_x$VAl, where $Z$ = Mo, W, Os and Ru, respectively. A signature of the ferrimagnetic ordering of Mn$_{2}$CoAl and Mn$_{2}$VAl Heusler alloys is reflected in the calculated Heisenberg exchange constants. They decay very rapidly with the interatomic distance and have short range, which is a consequence of the e…

Single femtosecond pulse toggle switching of ferrimagnetic alloys is an essential building block for ultrafast spintronics. Very different element-specific demagnetization dynamics is believed to be a hard limit for switching in ferrimagnets. This suggests that ferrimagnets composed of two ions of different nature, such as rare earth transition metal alloys, are necessary for switching. However, experimental observation of toggle switching in Mn$_2$Ru$_x$Ga Heusler alloys, has contested this limit since Mn ions are of the same nature. To shed some light into this question, we present an atomis…
We examined the photo-induced dynamics of ferromagnetic Co/Pt thin films demonstrating perpendicular magnetic anisotropy with element specificity using resonant polar magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements at Pt~N${}_{6,7}$ and Co~M${}_{2,3}$ edges with an x-ray free electron laser. The obtained results showed a clear element dependence of photo-induced demagnetization time scales: $τ_\textrm{demag.}^\textrm{Co}=80\pm60~\textrm{fs}$ and $τ_\textrm{demag.}^\textrm{Pt}=640\pm140~\textrm{fs}$. This dependence is explained by the induced moment of the Pt atom by current flow from the Co layer th…
Laser-induced ultrafast demagnetization has puzzled researchers around the world for over two decades. Intrinsic complexity in electronic, magnetic, and phononic subsystems is difficult to understand microscopically. So far it is not possible to explain demagnetization using a single mechanism, which suggests a crucial piece of information still missing. In this paper, we return to a fundamental aspect of physics: spin and its change within each band in the entire Brillouin zone. We employ fcc Ni as an example and use an extremely dense {\bf k} mesh to map out spin changes for every band close…
We report about element specific measurements of ultrafast demagnetization and magnetization precession damping in Permalloy (Py) thin films. Magnetization dynamics induced by optical pump at $1.5$eV is probed simultaneously at the $M_{2,3}$ edges of Ni and Fe with High order Harmonics for moderate demagnetization rates (less than $50$%). The role of the intersublattice exchange interaction on both longitudinal and transverse dynamics is analyzed with a Landau Lifshitz Bloch description of ferromagnetically coupled Fe and Ni sublattices. It is shown that the intersublattice exchange interactio…
Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ (Py) and Py-Cu exhibit intriguing ultrafast demagnetization behavior, where the Ni magnetic moment shows a delayed response relative to the Fe [S. Mathias et al., PNAS {\bf 109}, 4792 (2012)]. To unravel the mechanism responsible for this behavior, we have studied Py-Cu alloys for a wide range of Cu concentrations using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The magnetic moments of Fe and Ni are found to respond very differently to Cu alloying: Fe becomes a strong ferromagnet in Py, with the magnetic moment largely unaffected by Cu alloying. In contrast, the Ni magnetic m…
Here we carry out a first-principles time-dependent calculation to investigate how fast electrons actually move under laser excitation and how large the electron transport affects demagnetization on the shortest time scale. To take into account the transport effect, we implement the intraband transition in our theory. In the bulk fcc Ni, we find the effect of the spin transport on the demagnetization is extremely small, no more than 1\%. The collective electron velocity in Ni is 0.4 $\rm Å/fs$, much smaller than the Fermi velocity, and the collective displacement is no more than 0.1 $\rm Å$. B…
The transition frequency between nonthermal coherent magnetic precessions and ultrafast demagnetization is arguably the most sought after answer in magnetism science and technology nowadays. So far, it is believed to be in the terahertz (THz) range. Here, using an ultra-intense low frequency THz bullet, and thin magnetic layers, we report on experimental evidences that fully coherent nonthermal THz magnetic switching may never be reachable in conventional ferromagnetic thin films. At high excitation intensities, while the spins still coherently precess with the THz magnetic field, the deposite…
Following the demonstration of laser-induced ultrafast demagnetization in ferromagnetic nickel, several theoretical and phenomenological propositions have sought to uncover its underlying physics. In this work we revisit the three temperature model (3TM) and the microscopic three temperature model (M3TM) to perform a comparative analysis of ultrafast demagnetization in 20-nm-thick cobalt, nickel and permalloy thin films measured using an all-optical pump-probe technique. In addition to the ultrafast dynamics at the femtosecond timescales, the nanosecond magnetization precession and damping are…
The Elliott-Yafet mechanism is arguably the most promising candidate to explain the ultrafast demagnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic transition metals on timescales on the order of 100 femtoseconds. So far, only electron-phonon scattering has been analyzed as the scattering process needed to account for the demagnetization due to the Elliott-Yafet mechanism. We show for the first time that the electron-electron scattering contribution to the Elliott-Yafet mechanism has the potential to explain time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements on thin magnetic cobalt and nickel films, w…
Exact calculated time evolutions in the framework of a many-electron model of itinerant magnetism provide new insights into the laser-induced ultrafast demagnetization observed in ferromagnetic (FM) transition metal thin films. The interplay between local spin-orbit interactions and interatomic hopping is shown to be at the origin of the observed post-excitation breakdown of FM correlations between highly stable local magnetic moments. The mechanism behind spin- and angular-momentum transfer is revealed from a microscopic perspective by rigorously complying with all fundamental conservation la…
In spintronics applications, ultrafast spin dynamics have to be controlled at femtosecond (fs) timescales via fs-laser radiation. At such ultrafast timescales, the effect of the Gilbert damping factor α on ultrafast demagnetization time should be considered. In previous explorations for the relationship between these two parameters, it was found that the theoretical calculations based on the local spin-flip scattering model do not agree with the experimental results. Here, we find that in Fe81Ga19(FeGa)/Ir20Mn80(IrMn) bilayers, the unconventional IrMn thickness dependence of α results from the…
The role of photon angular momentum in laser-induced demagnetization of Nickel thin films is investigated by means of pump-probe time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect in the polar geometry. The recorded data display a strong dependency on pump helicity during pump-probe temporal overlap, which is shown to be of non-magnetic origin. By accurately fitting the demagnetization curves we also show that demagnetization time and electron-phonon equilibration time are not affected by pump-helicity. Thereby our results do not support direct transfer of angular momentum between photons and spins to …
Laser-induced femtosecond demagnetization has attracted a broad attention as a possible candidate for information storage technology. However, whether or not lattice vibration directly participates in demagnetization has been highly controversial over a decade. A recent electron diffraction experiment attributed the demagnetization to the polarized phonon effect, but a similar x-ray diffraction experiment attributed it to the Einstein-de Haas effect. Common to both experiments is that neither the angular momentum of the lattice nor the rotation of the sample was directly probed. Here, we repor…
Magnetic phenomena are ubiquitous in our surroundings and indispensable for modern science and technology, but it is notoriously difficult to change the magnetic order of a material in a rapid way. However, if a thin nickel film is subjected to ultrashort laser pulses, it can lose its magnetic order almost completely within merely femtosecond times. This phenomenon, in the meantime also observed in many other materials, has connected magnetism with femtosecond optics in an efficient, ultrafast and complex way, offering opportunities for rapid information processing or ultrafast spintronics at …
Irradiation with an ultrashort laser pulse can completely destroy the magnetic order of ferromagnetic thin films on the femtosecond timescale. This phenomenon holds great potential for ultrafast spintronics and information processing and is an active field of research. It is still an open question if the angular momentum of light can support this effect. While it has been shown that the spin of light only has a negligible influence, we experimentally demonstrate the influence of ultrashort laser pulses with orbital angular momentum (OAM) on the magnetization dynamics of a thin nickel film. Our…
The ability to controllably manipulate the laser-induced ultrafast magnetic dynamics is a prerequisite for future high speed spintronic devices. The optimization of devices requires the controllability of the ultrafast demagnetization time, , and intrinsic Gilbert damping, . In previous attempts to establish the relationship between and , the rare-earth doping of a permalloy film with two different demagnetization mechanism is not a suitable candidate. Here, we choose Co/Ni bilayers to investigate the relations between and by means of time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TRMOKE) via adju…
We theoretically study the dynamic time evolution following laser pulse pumping in an antiferromagnetic insulator Cr$_{2}$O$_{3}$. From the photoexcited high-spin quartet states to the long-lived low-spin doublet states, the ultrafast demagnetization processes are investigated by solving the dissipative Schrödinger equation. We find that the demagnetization times are of the order of hundreds of femtosecond, in good agreement with recent experiments. The switching times could be strongly reduced by properly tuning the energy gaps between the multiplet energy levels of Cr$^{3+}$. Furthermore, th…
Time resolved measurements of the linear magneto-optical Kerr rotation reveal that, in the {\it 3d} ferromagnets Fe, Co and Ni, the amplitude of the demagnetization increases linearly with the fluence of the light. We rationalize this phenomenon as being linearly driven by the increase in temperature, the electron-phonon and electron-magnon scattering, and a reduction of the inter-atomic exchange. The amplitude of the latter phenomenon, which until the present study has been widely overlooked, is obtained through \textit{ab initio} density functional theory calculations, and is argued to be th…
We report on optically induced, ultrafast magnetization dynamics in the Heusler alloy $\mathrm{Co_{2}FeAl}$, probed by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. Experimental results are compared to results from electronic structure theory and atomistic spin-dynamics simulations. Experimentally, we find that the demagnetization time ($τ_{M}$) in films of $\mathrm{Co_{2}FeAl}$ is almost independent of varying structural order, and that it is similar to that in elemental 3d ferromagnets. In contrast, the slower process of magnetization recovery, specified by $τ_{R}$, is found to occur on picosec…
By correlating time- and angle-resolved photoemission and time-resolved transverse- magneto- optical Kerr effect measurements, both at extreme ultraviolet wavelengths, we uncover the universal nature of the ultrafast photoinduced magnetic phase transition in Ni. This allows us to explain the ultrafast magnetic response of Ni at all laser fluences - from a small reduction of the magnetization at low laser fluences, to complete quenching at high laser fluences. Both probe methods exhibit the same demagnetization and recovery timescales. We further show that the ultrafast demagnetization in Ni is…
Stoner and Heisenberg excitations in magnetic materials are inherently different. The former involves an effective reduction of the exchange splitting, whereas the latter comprises excitation of spin-waves. In this work, we test the impact of these two excitations in the hybrid Stoner-Heisenberg system FePd. We present a microscopic picture of ultrafast demagnetization dynamics in this alloy, which represents both components of strong local exchange splitting in Fe, and induced polarization in Pd. We identify spin-orbit coupling and optical inter-site spin transfer as the two dominant factors …
The ultrafast dynamics of magnetic order in a ferromagnet are governed by the interplay between electronic, magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom. In order to obtain a microscopic understanding of ultrafast demagnetization, information on the response of all three subsystems is required. A consistent description of demagnetization and microscopic energy flow, however, is still missing. Here, we combine a femtosecond electron diffraction study of the ultrafast lattice response of nickel to laser excitation with ab initio calculations of the electron-phonon interaction and energy-conserving at…
We use transient absorption spectroscopy with circularly polarized x-rays to detect laser-excited hole states below the Fermi level and compare their dynamics with that of unoccupied states above the Fermi level in ferromagnetic [Co/Pd] multilayers. While below the Fermi level an instantaneous and significantly stronger demagnetization is observed, above the Fermi level the demagnetization is delayed by 35+/-10 fs. This provides a direct visualization of how ultrafast demagnetization proceeds via initial spin-flip scattering of laser-excited holes to the subsequent formation of spin waves.
We have investigated the ultrafast spin dynamics in EuO thin films by time-resolved Faraday rotation spectroscopy. The photoinduced magnetization is found to be increased in a transient manner, accompanied with subsequent demagnetization. The dynamical magnetization enhancement showed a maximum slightly below the Curie temperature with prolonged tails toward both lower and higher temperatures and dominates the demagnetization counterpart at 55 K. The magnetization enhancement component decays in ~1 ns. The realization of the transient collective ordering is attributable to the enhancement of t…
Element specific ultrafast demagnetization was studied in Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$ alloys, covering the concentration range between $0.1<x<0.9$. For all compositions, we observe a delay in the onset of Ni demagnetization relative to the Fe demagnetization. We find that the delay is correlated to the Curie temperature and hence also the exchange interaction. The temporal evolution of demagnetization is fitted to a magnon diffusion model based on the presupposition of enhanced ultrafast magnon generation in the Fe sublattice. The spin wave stiffness extracted from this model correspond well to known e…
We have studied ultrafast photoinduced demagnetization in GaMnAs via two-color time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy. Below-bandgap midinfrared pump pulses strongly excite the valence band, while near-infrared probe pulses reveal sub-picosecond demagnetization that is followed by an ultrafast ($\sim$1 ps) partial recovery of the Kerr signal. Through comparison with InMnAs, we attribute the signal recovery to an ultrafast energy relaxation of holes. We propose that the dynamical polarization of holes through $p$-$d$ scattering is the source of the observed probe signal. These results …
We report on an element- and time-resolved investigation of femtosecond laser induced ultrafast dynamics of 3d and 4f spins in a ferrimagnetic Co80Dy20 alloy as a function of temperature. We observe an increase of the Co3d characteristic demagnetization time and a decrease of the Dy4f demagnetization time when the temperature is approaching the Curie temperature. It suggests that the critical slowing down regime, which affects the laser induced ultrafast dynamics in pure 3d transition metals and 4f rare-earth ferromagnetic layers, vanishes for the Dy sublattice in the CoDy alloy, in line with …
