We calculate masses and decays of the (lightest) hybrid nonet with exotic quantum numbers $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ and the nonet of their chiral partners with $J^{PC}=1^{+-}$ in the framework of the extended Linear Sigma Model (eLSM). As an input, we identify $π_{1}^{hyb}=π_{1}(1600)$ as a low-lying hybrid. We investigated interaction terms which fulfil chiral symmetry. For what concerns $π_{1}^{hyb},$ the most important decays are $π_{1}^{hyb}\rightarrow b_{1}π,$ $π_{1}(1600)\rightarrowρπη,$ $π_{1}^{hyb}% \rightarrowρπ,$ and $π_{1}^{hyb}\rightarrow KK^{\ast}(892).$ The decays $π_{1}^{hyb}\rightarrowηπ$ and $π_{1}^{hyb}\rightarrowη^{\prime }π$ are expected to be small but non-zero: they follow from a chirally symmetric interaction term that breaks explicitly the axial anomaly. For all the other members of the two hybrid nonets (for which no experimental candidates exist yet) we report decay ratios that may guide ongoing and future experiments.
The so-called extended linear sigma model is a chiral model with (pseudo)scalar and (axial-)vector mesons. It is based on the requirements of (global) chiral symmetry and dilatation invariance. The purpose of this model is the description of the hadron phenomenology up to 1.7 GeV. We present the latest theoretical results, which show a good agreement with the experiment.
We consider the quantum state describing theDisoriented Chiral Condensate (DCC), which may be produced in high energy collisions. We show how a mean field treatment of the quantum equations corresponding to the classical linear sigma model leads to a squeezed state description of the pions emerging from the DCC. We examine various squeezed and coherent state descriptions of those pions with particular attention to charge and number fluctuations. We also study the phenomenology of multiple DCC domains.
We discuss the link between the chiral symmetry of QCD and the numerical results of the light-front quark model, analyzing both the twist-2 and twist-3 distribution amplitudes of a pion. In particular, we exhibit that the pion twist-3 distribution amplitude can flip the sign of curvature as the cutoff scale for the transverse momentum gets lower than a typical scale of around 1 GeV.
The phenomenology of a newly developed model of hybrid meson decay is developed. The decay mechanism is based on the heavy quark expansion of QCD and the strong coupling flux tube picture of nonperturbative glue. A comprehensive list of partial decay widths of a wide variety of light, $s\bar s$, $c\bar c$, and $b \bar b$ hybrid mesons is presented. Results which appear approximately universal are highlighted along with those which distinguish different hybrid decay models. Finally, we examine several interesting hybrid candidates in detail.
We propose a new approach to the determination of hadronic observables in which the essential features of chiral symmetry are combined with conventional constituent quark models. To illustrate the approach, we consider the simple quark model in the limit of SU(3) flavour symmetry at the strange quark mass. The comparison with data is made after an analytic continuation which ensures the correct leading nonanalytic behaviour of chiral perturbation theory. The approach not only gives an excellent fit for the octet baryon magnetic moments but the prediction for the $Δ^{++}$ magnetic moment is als…
In the framework of the $U(2)_{R}\times U(2)_{L}$ symmetric linear sigma model with (axial)vector mesons generalized by including a dilaton field we study the phenomenology of the scalar-isoscalar resonances below 2 GeV. It turns out that, in our favoured scenario, the resonance $f_{0}(1370)$ is predominantly a $\bar{q}q$ state and $f_{0}(1500)$ is predominantly a glueball state. Additionally we are able to calculate the value of the gluon condensate, which is in agreement with lattice QCD results.
The existence of non-q\bar{q} hadrons such as glueballs and hybrids is one of the most important qualitative questions in QCD. The COMPASS experiment offers the possibility to unambiguously identify such states and map out the glueball and hybrid spectrum. In this review I discuss the expected properties of glueballs and hybrids and how they might be produced and studied by the COMPASS collaboration.
We present an analysis of four sum rules, each based on chiral symmetry and containing the difference $ρ_{\rm V}(s) - ρ_{\rm A}(s)$ of isovector vector and axialvector spectral functions. Experimental data from tau lepton decay and electron-positron scattering identify the spectral functions over a limited kinematic domain. We summarize the status of the existing database. However, a successful determination of the sum rules requires additional content, in the form of theoretical input. We show how chiral symmetry and the operator product expansion can be used to constrain the spectral functio…
To investigate $Z'$ phenomenology model-independent, we combine chiral effective theory with anomaly cancellation conditions without any other model input. We focus on $Z'$ mixings with $γ-Z$ in both mass and kinetic parts and calculate contributions to oblique $S,T,U$. The three sets of anomaly-free fermion $U(1)'$ charges parameterize the $Z'$ interactions with fermions. The cancellation of the $[U(1)']^3$ anomaly and mixing gravitational-gauge anomaly determines the number of right-handed neutrinos. We also find a novel relation between the charge assignments and Stueckelberg coupling in te…
The low energy behaviour of Quantum Chromodynamics makes unreliable an expansion in terms of its coupling strength, since nothing guarantees the convergence of such expansion. To overcomer such difficulty one resorts to Lattice QCD or Effective Field Theories. In this thesis we compute hadronic processes at low energies, using Resonance Chiral Lagrangians as the effective theory of QCD. The processes we study are important background on the search for Lepton Flavor Violation, Lepton Universality Violation, Lepton Number Violation, Second Class Currents and study the Hadronic light-by-light con…
Chiral quark models offer a practical and simple tool to describe covariantly both low and high energy phenomenology in combination with QCD evolution. This can be done in full harmony with chiral symmetry and electromagnetic gauge invariance. We review the recently proposed spectral quark model where all these constraints are implemented.
We investigate the structure of the Lambda(1405) resonance and Kbar N phenomenology in the perspective of chiral SU(3) dynamics. Utilizing the chiral coupled-channel approach which well describes the Kbar N scattering observable, we perform three different analyses to clarify the structure of the Lambda(1405) resonance. The results consistently indicate the meson-baryon molecule picture of the Lambda(1405). We argue the consequence of the chiral dynamics in Kbar N phenomenology and the antikaon bound state in nucleus, emphasizing the important role of the strong pi Sigma interaction.
We analyse the odd-intrinsic-parity effective Lagrangian of QCD valid for processes involving one pseudoscalar with two vector mesons described in terms of antisymmetric tensor fields. Substantial information on the odd-intrinsic-parity couplings is obtained by constructing the vector-vector-pseudoscalar Green's three-point function, at leading order in 1/N_C, and demanding that its short-distance behaviour matches the corresponding OPE result. The QCD constraints thus enforced allow us to predict the decay amplitude omega -> pi gamma, the O(p^6) corrections to pi -> gamma gamma and the slope …
Inner and empirically consistent model of elementary particles, including two matter structural levels beyond the quark one is built. Excitations spectra, masses and interactions are analysed using the phenomenological notion of non-pertubative vacuum condensate. Essential low-energy predictions of developed concepts are classified. Effective gauge U(1)xU(1)xSU(2)-theory of quark-lepton excitations behavior based on the performed analysis of preon-subpreon phenomenology is consistently built. The ability of its expansion with fermions and scalar leptoquark coupling is also considered. Shown th…
The supersymmetric grand unified theory with the Hosotani mechanism predicts the existence of adjoint chiral supermultiplets at the SUSY breaking scale. In particular, the SU(2) triplet and the singlet chiral superfields affect the Higgs sector. We investigate the contributions from these adjoint chiral multiplets to the masses of the Higgs sector particles and their couplings to the standard model particles. We show that the predicted values of the Higgs sector parameters deviate from the standard model and the minimal supersymmetric standard model by O(1)% - O(10)%.
In this paper we consider the phenomenology of a ``non-standard'' Higgs Boson in longitudinal gauge-Boson scattering. First, we present a composite Higgs model (based on an $SU(4)/Sp\,(4)$ chiral-symmetry breaking pattern) in which there is a non-standard Higgs Boson. Then we explore, in a model-independent way, the phenomenology of such a non-standard Higgs by calculating the chiral logarithmic corrections to longitudinal gauge scattering. This calculation is done using the Equivalence theorem and the Higgs is treated as a scalar-isoscalar resonance coupled to the Goldstone Bosons of the \mbo…
We highlight some of the recent advances in the application of chiral effective field theory (chiral EFT) with baryons to the $πN$ scattering process. We recall some problems that cast doubt on the applicability of chiral EFT to $πN$ and show how the relativistic formalism, once the $Δ(1232)$-resonance is included as an explicit degree of freedom, solves these issues. Finally it is shown how this approach can be used to extract the $σ$-terms from phenomenological information.
These are the proceedings of the workshop on ``Lattice QCD, Chiral Perturbation Theory and Hadron Phenomenology'' held at the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas from October 2 to 6, 2006. The workshop concentrated on bringing together researchers working in lattice QCD and chiral perturbation theory with the aim of improving our understanding how hadron properties can be calculated and analyzed from first principles. Included are a short contribution per talk.
The hybrid gauge transformation and its nontrivial phenomenological implications are investigated using the noncommutative gauge theory with the Seiberg-Witten map expanded scenario. Particularly, the $e^+e^- \toμ^+ μ^-$ process is studied with a generalized noncommutative standard model (NCSM) including massive neutrinos and neutrino-photon interaction. In this model, the hybrid gauge transformation in the lepton sector is naturally introduced through the requirement of gauge invariance of the seesaw neutrino mass term. It is shown that in the NCSM without hybrid gauge transformation the nonc…
The phenomenology of a QCD-Pomeron model based on the exchange of a pair of non-perturbative gluons, i.e. gluon fields with a finite correlation length in the vacuum, is studied in comparison with the phenomenology of QCD chiral symmetry breaking, based on non-perturbative solutions of Schwinger-Dyson equations for the quark propagator including these non-perturbative gluon effects. We show that these models are incompatible, and point out some possibles origins of this problem.
High-energy Heavy-ion collisions can generate extremely hot quark-gluon matter and also extremely strong magnetic fields and fluid vorticity. Once coupled to chiral anomaly, the magnetic fields and fluid vorticity can induce a variety of novel transport phenomena, including the chiral magnetic effect, chiral vortical effect, etc. Some of them require the environmental violation of parity and thus provide a means to test the possible parity violation in hot strongly interacting matter. We will discuss the underlying mechanism and implications of these anomalous chiral transports in heavy-ion co…
Matter fields in the MSSM are chiral supermultiplets in fundamental (or singlet) representations of the standard model gauge group. In this paper we introduce chiral superfields in the adjoint representation of $SU(3)_C$ and study the effective field theory and phenomenology of them. These states are well motivated by intersecting D-brane models in which additional massless adjoint chiral supermultiplets appear generically in the low energy spectrum. Although it has been pointed out that the existence of these additional fields may make it difficult to obtain asymptotic freedom, we demonstrate…
We consider a generic composite Higgs model based on the coset SO(5)/SO(4) and study its phenomenology beyond the leading low-energy effective lagrangian approximation. Our basic goal is to introduce in a controllable and simple way the lowest-lying, possibly narrow, resonances that may exist is such models. We do so by proposing a criterion that we call partial UV completion. We characterize the simplest cases, corresponding respectively to a scalar in either singlet or tensor representation of SO(4) and to vectors in the adjoint of SO(4). We study the impact of these resonances on the signal…
A systematic study of the $η$-$η'$ mixing in Large-$N_c$ chiral perturbation theory is presented with special emphasis on the role of the next-to-next-to-leading-order contributions in the combined momentum, quark-mass, and $1/N_c$ expansions. At this order, loop corrections as well as OZI-rule-violating pieces need to be included. Mixing angles as well as pseudoscalar decay constants are discussed within this framework. The results are compared with recent phenomenological approaches.
The supersymmetric SU(5) grand unified theory with the gauge symmetry broken by the Hosotani mechanism naturally solves the mass hierarchy problem between the colored Higgs triplet and the electroweak Higgs doublet, and predicts the existence of adjoint chiral superfields with masses of the order of the supersymmetry breaking scale as a byproduct. In addition to the two SU(2)_L Higgs doublets of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, the Higgs sector is extended by an SU(2)_L triplet chiral supermultiplet with hypercharge zero and a neutral singlet one. Such new triplet and singlet chiral …
We investigate a linear sigma model with global chiral $U(2)_{R} \times U(2)_{L}$ symmetry. The mesonic degrees of freedom are the standard scalar and pseudoscalar mesons and the vector and axial-vector mesons. The baryonic degrees of freedom are the nucleon, $N$, and its chiral partner, $N^{*}$, which is usually identified with N(1535). The chiral partner is incorporated in the so-called mirror assignment, where the nucleon mass is not solely generated by the chiral condensate but also by a chirally invariant mass term, $m_{0}$. The presence of (axial-) vector fields modifies the expressions …
A sector with QCD-like strong dynamics is common in models of non-standard physics. Such a model could be accessible in LHC searches if both confinement and big-quarks charged under the confining group are at the TeV scale. Big-quark masses at this scale can be explained if the new fermions are chiral under a new $U(1)^\prime$ gauge symmetry such that their bare masses are related to the $U(1)^\prime$-breaking and new confinement scales. Here we present a study of a minimal GUT-motivated and gauge anomaly-free model with implications for the LHC Run 2 searches. We find that the first signature…
We evaluate the impact of recent developments in hadron phenomenology on extracting possible fundamental tensor interactions beyond the standard model. We show that a novel class of observables, including the chiral-odd generalized parton distributions, and the transversity parton distribution function can contribute to the constraints on this quantity. Experimental extractions of the tensor hadronic matrix elements, if sufficiently precise, will provide a so far absent testing ground for lattice QCD calculations.
In the supersymmetric SU(5) grand unified theory whose gauge symmetry is broken by virtue of the Hosotani mechanism, the huge mass splitting between the colored Higgs triplet and the electroweak Higgs doublet superfields is naturally realized. As a byproduct, the existence of adjoint chiral superfields with masses of the order of the supersymmetry breaking scale is predicted, leading to the Higgs sector that contains an SU(2)_L triplet chiral multiplet with hypercharge zero and a neutral singlet one in addition to the two SU(2)_L doublets of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. We focus …
We review the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) approach to the dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The subjects treated in Part I include the vacuum structure of QCD, mass spectra and coupling constants of hadrons, flavor mixing in mesons, the violation of the OZI rule in baryons, and the validity of the chiral perturbation in QCD. A subtle interplay between the axial anomaly and the current-quark masses is shown to play important roles, and a realistic evaluation of the strangeness and heavy quark contents of hadrons is given. In Part II, the NJL model is applied to…
We study the decays of the $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ hybrid nonet using a Lagrangian invariant under the flavor symmetry, parity reversal, and charge conjugation. We use the available experimental data, the lattice predictions, and the flavor constraints to evaluate the coupling strengths of the $π_1(1600)$ to various two-body mesonic states. Using these coupling constants, we estimate the partial widths of the two-body decays of the hybrid pion, kaon and the isoscalars. We find that the hybrid kaon can be nearly as broad as the $π_1(1600)$. Quite remarkably, we find also that the light isoscalar must b…
We present a novel analysis of the $πN$ scattering amplitude in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory up to ${\cal O}(p^3)$ within the extended-on-mass-shell renormalization scheme and including the $Δ(1232)$ explicitly in the $δ$-counting. We take the hadronic phase shifts provided by partial wave analyses as basic experimental information to fix the low-energy constants. Subsequently, we study in detail the various observables and low-energy theorems related to the $πN$ scattering amplitude. In particular, we discuss the results and chiral expansion of the phase shifts, the threshold c…
The Lagrangian of pseudoscalar, vector, and axial-vector mesons is determined by the explicit global chiral symmetry and hidden local chiral symmetry. There are fourteen interacting terms up to the dimension-four of covariant derivatives rather than the usual eleven interacting terms given in literature from hidden local symmetry approach. There are only two independent parameters. The three new terms are important in phenomenology.
We discuss the phenomenology of a three-family supersymmetric Standard-like Model derived from the orientifold construction, in which the ordinary chiral states are localized at the intersection of branes at angles. In addition to the Standard Model group, there are two additional U(1)' symmetries, one of which has family non-universal and therefore flavor changing couplings, and a quasi-hidden non-abelian sector which becomes strongly coupled above the electroweak scale. The perturbative spectrum contains a fourth family of exotic (SU(2)- singlet) quarks and leptons, in which, however, the le…
We consider dark matter physics in a model for the dark sector with extra dark U(1)$_X$ gauge symmetry. The dark sector is composed of exotic fermions that are charged under both dark U(1)$_X$ and the standard model SU(3)$_C \times$U(1)$_Y$ gauge groups, as well as standard model singlet complex scalars $Φ$ and $X$ with nonzero U(1)$_X$ charge. In this model, there are two dark matter candidates$-$a scalar and a fermion$-$both of which are stabilized by accidental $Z_2$ symmetry. Their thermal relic density, and direct and indirect detection constraints are discussed in detail and we search fo…
We study the thermodynamics of two flavor color superconducting (2SC) quark matter within a nonlocal chiral quark model, using both instantaneous and covariant nonlocal interactions. For applications to compact stars, we impose conditions of electric and color charge neutrality as well as beta equilibrium and construct a phase transition to the hadronic matter phase described within the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (DBHF) approach. We obtain mass-radius relations for hybrid star configurations which fulfill modern observational constraints, including compact star masses above 2 M_sun.
In this paper, we develop models applicable to phenomenological particle physics by using the string analogy of particles. These theories can be used to investigate the phenomenology of confinement, deconfinement, chiral condensate, QGP phase transitions, and even the evolution of the early universe. Other confining properties such as scalar glueball mass, gluon mass, glueball-meson mixing states, QCD vacuum, and color superconductivity can also be investigated in these model frameworks. We use one of the models to describe the phenomenon of color confinement among glueballs at the end of the …
{I construct a renormalizable $SU(2)^{89}\times U(1)$ gauge theory with standard-model-like phenomenology for the gauge bosons masses and the weak interactions of the light fermions (including the $b$) but in which all vacuum expectation values are about 2 TeV. This is a deconstructed version of a Higgsless model with a flat extra dimension. The fermions are delocalized on the theory space in an unusual way, with LH and RD fermions on alternate nodes.

We study the simplest renormalizable scalar leptoquark models where the standard model is augmented only by one additional scalar representation of SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1). The requirement that there be no proton decay from renormalizable interactions singles out two such models, one of which exhibits an unusual top mass enhancement of the mu -> e gamma decay rate. We analyze the phenomenology of the model with the unusual top mass enhancement of loop level chirality changing charged lepton processes in the light of existing and upcoming experiments. Both of the models that do not allow proton de…
We examine the extraction of moments of parton distributions from lattice data, focusing in particular on the chiral extrapolation as a function of the quark mass. Inclusion of the correct chiral behavior of the spin-averaged isovector distribution resolves a long-standing discrepancy between the lattice moments and experiment. We extract the x-dependence of the valence u-d distribution from the lowest few lattice moments, and discuss the implications for the quark mass dependence of meson masses lying on the rho Regge trajectory. The role of chiral symmetry in spin-dependent distributions, an…
We examine the phenomenology of the scalar fields in weak and Higgs sectors of minimal $R$-symmetric models, in particular the 'swino' and 'sbino', the scalar partners to the chiral fields that marry the electroweak gauge bosons in Dirac gaugino models. These fields are in adjoint representations of $SU(2)$ and $U(1)$ and have both $CP$-even and $CP$-odd components. The interactions of these new states are summarized, and decay widths are computed analytically to one loop order. We discuss the tree level contributions of these new states to the mass spectrum of MSSM sfermions. We also explore …
We present a two-flavour linear sigma model with global chiral symmetry and (axial-)vector mesons as well as an additional glueball degree of freedom. We study the structure of the well-established scalar resonances f0(1370) and f0(1500): by a fit to experimentally known decay widths we find that f0(1370) is predominantly a \bar{q}q state and f0(1500) is predominantly a glueball state. The overall phenomenology of these two resonances can be well described. Other assignments for our mixed quarkonium-glueball states are also tested, but turn out to be in worse agreement with the phenomenology. …
We study the phenomenology of hybrid scenarios of neutrino dark energy, where in addition to a so-called Mass Varying Neutrino (MaVaN) sector a cosmological constant (from a false vacuum) is driving the accelerated expansion of the universe today. For general power law potentials we calculate the effective equation of state parameter w_{eff}(z) in terms of the neutrino mass scale. Due to the interaction of the dark energy field (acceleron) with the neutrino sector, w_{eff}(z) is predicted to become smaller than -1 for z>0, which could be tested in future cosmological observations. For the cons…
We revisit the classical relation between the strangeness content of the nucleon, the pion-nucleon sigma term and the $SU(3)_F$ breaking of the baryon masses in the context of Lorentz covariant chiral perturbation theory with explicit decuplet-baryon resonance fields. We find that a value of the pion-nucleon sigma term of $\sim$60 MeV is not necessarily at odds with a small strangeness content of the nucleon, in line with the fulfillment of the OZI rule. Moreover, this value is indeed favored by our next-to-leading order calculation. We compare our results with earlier ones and discuss the con…
The effects of the CP violating $θ$ term in the QCD Lagrangian upon low energy hadronic phenomenology are reconsidered. Strong CP violating interactions among Goldstone bosons and octet baryons are incorporated into an effective chiral Lagrangian framework. The $θ$ term's impact upon the decays $η\toππ$ and $π^0\toγγ$ is then investigated but found to be extremely small. A refined model independent estimate of nonanalytic contributions to the neutron electric dipole moment is also determined using velocity dependent Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory. We obtain the approximate upper bound $|θ| …
In this article I review some aspects of flavour phenomenology in the MSSM. After an overview of various flavour observables I discuss the constraints on the off-diagonal elements of the squark mass matrices. In this context I present the Fortran code SUSY_FLAVOR which calculates these processes in the generic MSSM including the complete resummation of all chirally enhanced effects as a new feature of version 2. Than I discuss where large new physics effects in the MSSM are still possible. As an example of a model which can give large effects in flavour physics I review a model with "radiative…
We study the approximation of chiral quark models with simpler models, obtained via gradient expansion. The resulting Lagrangian of the type of the linear sigma-model contains, at the lowest level, an additional term with two derivatives. We investigate the dynamical consequences of this term and its relevance to the phenomenology of the soliton models of the nucleon. It is found that the inclusion of the new term allows for a more efficient approximation of the underlying quark theory, especially in those cases where dynamics allows for a large deviation of the chiral fields from the chiral c…
The 3-phase version of the hybrid chiral bag model, containing the phase of asymptotic freedom, the hadronization phase as well as the intermediate phase of constituent quarks, is proposed. For this model the self-consistent solutions, which take into account the fermion vacuum polarization effects, are found in 1+1 D. The renormalized total energy of the bag is studied as a function of its geometry and topological (baryon) number. It is shown that in the case of non-zero topological charge there exists a set of configurations being the local minima of the total energy of the bag and containin…
We study O(alpha^2 beta_0) perturbative corrections to matrix elements entering two-body exclusive decays of the form B -> pi pi, pi K in the QCD factorization formalism, including chirally enhanced power corrections, and discuss the effect of these corrections on direct CP asymmetries, which receive their first contribution at O(alpha). We find that the O(alpha^2 beta_0) corrections are often as large as the O(alpha) corrections. We find large uncertainties due to renormalization scale dependence as well as poor knowledge of the non-perturbative parameters. We assess the effect of the perturb…
The approximate symmetries of Quantum ChromoDynamics in the infinite heavy quark ($Q=c,b$) mass limit ($m_Q \to \infty$) and in the chiral limit for the light quarks ($m_q \to 0,\;q=\,u,\,d,\,s$) can be used together to build up an effective chiral lagrangian for heavy and light mesons describing strong interactions among effective meson fields as well as their couplings to electromagnetic and weak currents, including the relevant symmetry breaking terms. The effective theory includes heavy ($Q \bar q$) mesons of both negative and positive parity, light pseudoscalars, as well as light vector m…
A new mechanism for T and CPT violation is reviewed, which relies on chiral fermions, gauge interactions and nontrivial spacetime topology. Also discussed are the possible effects on the propagation of electromagnetic waves in vacuo, in particular for the cosmic microwave background radiation.
