With optical spectroscopy we provide evidence that the insulator-metal transition in Sr$_2$Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$O$_{4}$ occurs close to a crossover from the Mott- to the Slater-type. The Mott-gap at $x = 0$ persists to high temperature and evolves without an anomaly across the Néel temperature, $T_N$. Upon Rh-doping, it collapses rather rapidly and vanishes around $x = 0.055$. Notably, just as the Mott-gap vanishes yet another gap appears that is of the Slater-type and develops right below $T_N$. This Slater-gap is only partial and is accompanied by a reduced scattering rate of the remaining free carriers, similar as in the parent compounds of the iron arsenide superconductors.
We study antiferromagnetism and single-particle properties in the two-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model at low temperature. Collective spin fluctuations are governed by a non-linear sigma model that we derive from the Hubbard model for any value of the Coulomb repulsion. As the Coulomb repulsion increases, the ground state progressively evolves from a Slater to a Mott-Heisenberg antiferromagnet. At finite temperature, we find a metal-insulator transition between a pseudogap phase at weak coupling and a Mott-Hubbard insulator at strong coupling.
To examine the insulating mechanism of 5$d$ transition metal oxide Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, we study the ground state properties of a three-orbital Hubbard model with a large relativistic spin-orbit coupling on a square lattice. Using a variational Monte Carlo method, we find that the insulating state appearing in the ground state phase diagram for one hole per site varies from a weakly correlated to a strongly correlated antiferromagnetic (AF) state with increasing Coulomb interactions. This crossover is characterized by the different energy gain mechanisms of the AF insulating state, i.e., from an int…
We report on the epitaxial strain-driven electronic and antiferromagnetic modulations of a pseudospin-half square lattice realized in superlattices of (SrIrO3)1/(SrTiO3)1. With increasing compressive strain, we find the low-temperature insulating behavior to be strongly suppressed with a corresponding systematic reduction of both the Neel temperature and the staggered moment. However, despite such a suppression, the system remains weakly insulating above the Neel transition. The emergence of metallicity is observed under large compressive strain but only at temperatures far above the Néel tran…
We have investigated temperature-dependent electronic structures of Na2IrO3 to unravel its insulating nature. Employing the combined scheme of the density-functional theory (DFT) and the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), we have shown that the insulating state persists even above the Neel temperature (T_{N}), which reveals that Na2IrO3 is classified into a Mott-type insulator. The measured photoemission spectrum in the paramagnetic (PM) state is well described by the electronic structure obtained from the DFT+DMFT for the insulating state above T_{N}. The analysis of optical conductivity, ho…
We propose a new approach to understand the origin of the pseudogap in the cuprates, in terms of bosonic entropy. The near-simultaneous softening of a large number of different $q$-bosons yields an extended range of short-range order, wherein the growth of magnetic correlations with decreasing temperature $T$ is anomalously slow. These entropic effects cause the spectral weight associated with the Van Hove singularity (VHS) to shift rapidly and nearly linearly toward half filling at higher $T$, consistent with a picture of the VHS driving the pseudogap transition at a temperature $\sim T^*$. A…
We perform large scale projector determinant quantum Monte-Carlo simulations to study the insulating states of the half-filled SU(6) Hubbard model on the square lattice. The transition from the antiferromagnetic state to the valence bond solid state occurs as increasing the Hubbard $U$. In contrast, in the SU(2) and SU(4) cases antiferromagnetism persists throughout the entire interaction range. In the SU(6) case, antiferromagnetism starts to develop in the weak interacting regime based on the Slater mechanism of Fermi surface nesting. As $U$ passes a crossover value $U^*/t\approx 9$, the sing…
We present a temperature-dependent x-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS) study of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7. The XAS results reveal that the MIT drives the onset of local antiferromagnetic correlations around the Mn impurities, a precursor of the long-range antiferromagnetism detected by REXS at T_order<T_MIT. This establishes that the MIT is of the Mott-type (electronic correlations) as opposed to Slater-type (magnetic order). While this behavior is induced by Mn impurities, the (1/4,1/4,0) order exists for a wide range of Mn concen…
We supplement (and critically overview) the existing extensive analysis of antiferromagnetic solution for the Hubbard model with a detailed discussion of two specific features, namely (i) the evolution of the magnetic (Slater) gap (here renormalized by the electronic correlations) into the Mott-Hubbard or atomic gap, and (ii) a rather weak renormalization of the effective mass by the correlations in the half-filled-band case, which contrasts with that for the paramagnetic case. The mass remains strongly enhanced in the non-half-filled-band case. We also stress the difference between magnetic a…
Despite decades of experimental and theoretical efforts, the origin of metal-insulator transitions (MIT) in strongly-correlated materials is one of the main longstanding problems in condensed matter physics. An archetypal example is V2O3, where electronic, structural and magnetic phase transitions occur simultaneously. This remarkable concomitance makes the understanding of the origin of the MIT a challenge due to the many degrees of freedom at play. In this work, we demonstrate that magnetism plays the key dominant role. By acting on the magnetic degree of freedom, we reveal an anomalous beha…

We generalize the concept of vortex phase in a type II superconductor to textured phases, where certain phases can persist over an extended range of perturbations by confining competing phases on topological defects (the vortices in a superconductor). We apply this model to the pseudogap phase in cuprates, where the relevant topological defects are the antiphase domain walls of an underlying antiferromagnetic (AFM) order. We demonstrate that this model can describe many key features of intertwined orders in cuprates, and most importantly provide the first clear evidence for the Mott-Slater tra…
Using spin-assisted ab-initio random structure searches, we explore an exhaustive quantum phase diagram of archetypal interfaced Mott insulators, i.e. lanthanum-iron and lanthanum-titanium oxides. In particular, we report that the charge transfer induced by the interfacial electronic reconstruction stabilises a high spin ferrous Fe2+ state. We provide a pathway to control the strength of correlation in this electronic state by tuning the epitaxial strain, yielding a manifold of quantum electronic phases, i.e. Mott-Hubbard, charge transfer and Slater insulating states. Furthermore we report tha…
We present an angle-resolved photoemission study of the electronic structure of the three-dimensional pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7 through its magnetic metal-insulator transition. Our data reveal that metallic Nd2Ir2O7 has a quadratic band, touching the Fermi level at the Gamma point, similarly to that of Pr2Ir2O7. The Fermi node state is, therefore, a common feature of the metallic phase of the pyrochlore iridates. Upon cooling below the transition temperature, this compound exhibits a gap opening with an energy shift of quasiparticle peaks like a band gap insulator. The quasiparticle peaks ar…
The physics of doped Mott insulators remains controversial after decades of active research, hindered by the interplay among possible competing orders and fluctuations. It is thus highly desired to distinguish the intrinsic characters of the Mott-metal crossover from those of other origins. We investigate the evolution of electronic structure and dynamics of the hole-doped J=1/2 Mott insulator Sr2IrO4. The effective hole doping is achieved by replacing Ir with Rh atoms, with the chemical potential immediately jumping to or near the top of the lower Hubbard band. The doped iridates exhibit mult…
The experimentally established phase diagram of the half-filled Hubbard model features the existence of three distinct finite-temperature regimes, separated by extended crossover regions. A number of crossover lines can be defined to span those regions, which we explore in quantitative detail within the framework of dynamical mean-field theory. Most significantly, the high temperature crossover between the bad metal and Mott-insulator regimes displays a number of phenomena marking the gradual development of the Mott insulating state. We discuss the quantum critical scaling behavior found in th…
We perform a time-resolved optical study of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ to understand the influence of magnetic ordering on the low energy electronic structure of a strongly spin-orbit coupled $J_{eff}$=1/2 Mott insulator. By studying the recovery dynamics of photo-carriers excited across the Mott gap, we find that upon cooling through the Néel temperature $T_N$ the system evolves continuously from a metal-like phase with fast ($\sim$50 fs) and excitation density independent relaxation dynamics to a gapped phase characterized by slower ($\sim$500 fs) excitation density dependent bimolecular recombination dy…
Special solutions of the Hartree-Fock (HF) problem for Coulomb interacting electrons, being described by a simple model of the Cu-O planes in La2CuO4, are presented. One of the mean field states obtained, is able to predict some of the basic properties of this material, such as its insulator character and the antiferromagnetic order. The natural appearance of pseudogaps in some states of this compound is also indicated by another of the HF states obtained. These surprising results follow after eliminating spin and crystal symmetry restrictions which are usually imposed on the single particle H…
This is extended version of a previously submitted paper, in which special solutions of the Hartree-Fock (HF) problem for Coulomb interacting electrons, being described by a simple model of the Cu-O planes in La2CuO4, are presented. One of the mean field states obtained, is able to predict some of the basic properties of this material, such as its insulator character and the antiferromagnetic order. The natural appearance of pseudogaps in some states of this compound is also indicated by another of the HF states obtained. These surprising results follow after eliminating spin and crystal symme…
Electric field effect (EFE) controlled magnetoelectric transport in thin films of undoped and La-doped Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ (SIO) were investigated under the action of ionic liquid gating. Despite large carrier density modulation, the temperature dependent resistance measurements exhibit insulating behavior in chemically and EFE doped samples with the band filling up to 10\%. The ambipolar transport across the Mott gap is demonstrated by EFE tuning of the activation energy. Further, we observe a crossover from a negative magnetoresistance (MR) at high temperatures to positive MR at low temperatur…
The interaction-driven Mott transition in the half-filled Hubbard model is a first-order phase transition that terminates at a critical point $(T_\mathrm{c},U_\mathrm{c})$ in the temperature-interaction plane $T-U$. A number of crossovers occur along lines that extend for some range above $(T_\mathrm{c},U_\mathrm{c})$. Asymptotically close to $(T_\mathrm{c},U_\mathrm{c})$, these lines coalesce into the so-called Widom line. The existence of $(T_\mathrm{c},U_\mathrm{c})$ and of the associated crossovers becomes unclear when long-wavelength fluctuations or long-range order occur above $(T_\mathr…
We study the Mott transition in a frustrated Hubbard model with next-nearest neighbor hopping at half-filling. The interplay between interaction, dimensionality and geometric frustration closes the one-dimensional Mott gap and gives rise to a metallic phase with Fermi surface pockets. We argue that they emerge as a consequence of remnant one-dimensional Umklapp scattering at the momenta with vanishing interchain hopping matrix elements. In this pseudogap phase, enhanced d-wave pairing correlations are driven by antiferromagnetic fluctuations. Within the adopted cluster dynamical mean-field the…
We use a novel Monte Carlo method to study the Mott transition in an anisotropic triangular lattice. The real space approach, retaining extended spatial correlations, allows an accurate treatment of non trivial magnetic fluctuations in this frustrated structure. Choosing the degree of anisotropy to mimic the situation in the quasi-two dimensional organics, $κ-$(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]-X, we detect a wide pseudogap phase, with anomalous spectral and transport properties, between the `ungapped' metal and the `hard gap' Mott insulator. The magnetic fluctuations also lead to pronounced momentum…
We consider the dimer Hubbard model within Dynamical Mean Field Theory to study the interplay and competition between Mott and Peierls physics. We describe the various metal-insulator transition lines of the phase diagram and the break down of the different solutions that occur along them. We focus on the specific issue of the debated Mott-Peierls insulator crossover and describe the systematic evolution of the electronic structure across the phase diagram. We found that at low intra-dimer hopping the emerging local magnetic moments can unbind above a characteristic singlet temperature $T^*$. …
We study the asymmetric Hubbard model at half-filling as a generic model to describe the physics of two species of repulsively interacting fermionic cold atoms in optical lattices. We use Dynamical Mean Field Theory to obtain the paramagnetic phase diagram of the model as function of temperature, interaction strength and hopping asymmetry. A Mott transition with a region of two coexistent solutions is found for all nonzero values of the hopping asymmetry. At low temperatures the metallic phase is a heavy Fermi-liquid, qualitatively analogous to the Fermi liquid state of the symmetric Hubbard m…
The possibility of the strong electron-electron interaction driven insulating phase from the metallic phase in two-dimensions has been suggested for clean systems without intentional disorder, but its rigorous demonstration is still lacking. Here, we examine the finite-temperature transport behavior of a few layered-MoS$_2$ material in the vicinity of the density-driven metal-insulator transition (MIT), revealing previously overlooked universal features characteristic of strongly correlated electron systems. Our scaling analysis, based on the Wigner-Mott theoretical viewpoint, conclusively dem…
Nonequilibrium states induced by an applied bias voltage (V) and the corresponding current-voltage characteristics of one-dimensional models describing band and Mott insulators are investigated theoretically by using nonequilibrium Green's functions. We attach the models to metallic electrodes whose effects are incorporated into the self-energy. Modulation of the electron density and the scalar potential coming from the additional long-range interaction are calculated self-consistently within the Hartree approximation. For both models of band and Mott insulators with length L_C, the bias volta…
Based on the Phase Hamiltonian, two types of solitons are found to exist in the crossover region between band insulator and Mott insulator in one-dimension. Both of these solitons have fractional charges but with different spins, zero and 1/2, respectively. The results are in accord with the experimental results by Kanoda et al. for TTF-Chloranil under pressure.
We have performed in-plane transport measurements on the two-dimensional organic salt $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl. A variable (gas) pressure technique allows for a detailed study of the changes in conductivity through the insulator-to-metal transition. We identify four different transport regimes as a function of pressure and temperature (corresponding to insulating, semi-conducting, ''bad metal'', and strongly correlated Fermi liquid behaviours). Marked hysteresis is found in the transition region, which displays complex physics that we attribute to strong spatial inhomogeneities. A…
We study theoretically the zero temperature phase transition in two dimensions from a Fermi liquid to a paramagnetic Mott insulator with a spinon Fermi surface. We show that the approach to the bandwidth controlled Mott transition from the metallic side is accompanied by a vanishing quasiparticle residue and a diverging effective mass. The Landau parameters $F^0_s, F^0_a$ also diverge. Right at the quantum critical point there is a sharply defined `critical Fermi surface' but no Landau quasiparticle. The critical point has a $Tln\frac{1}{T}$ specific heat and a non-zero $T = 0$ resistivity. We…
We present scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy experiments on the novel J_eff = 1/2 Mott insulator Sr2IrO4. Local density of states (LDOS) measurements show an intrinsic insulating gap of 620 meV that is asymmetric about the Fermi level and is larger than previously reported values. The size of this gap suggests that Sr2IrO4 is likely a Mott rather than Slater insulator. In addition, we found a small number of native defects which create in-gap spectral weight. Atomically resolved LDOS measurements on and off the defects shows that this energy gap is quite fragile. Together the exte…
We present a spectroscopic study that reveals that the metal-insulator transition of strained VO$_2$ thin films may be driven towards a purely electronic transition, which does not rely on the Peierls dimerization, by the application of mechanical strain. Comparison with a moderately strained system, which does involve the lattice, demonstrates the crossover from Peierls- to Mott-like transitions.
The nature of insulating phase in 5$d$ based Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is quite debated as the theoretical as well as experimental investigations have put forward evidences in favor of both magnetically driven Slater-type and interaction driven Mott-type insulator. To understand this insulating behavior, we have investigated the nature of magnetic state in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ through studying critical exponents, low temperature thermal demagnetization and magnetocaloric effect. The estimated critical exponents do not exactly match with any universality class, however, the values obey the scaling behavior. The e…
We present the carrier transport properties in the vicinity of a doping-driven Mott transition observed at a field-effect transistor (FET) channel using a single crystal of the typical two-dimensional organic Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$CuN(CN)$_2$Cl ($κ$-Cl).The FET shows a continuous metal$-$insulator transition (MIT) as electrostatic doping proceeds. The phase transition appears to involve two-step crossovers, one in Hall measurement and the other in conductivity measurement. The crossover in conductivity occurs around the conductance quantum $e^2/h$ , and hence is not associated with …
Layered 5d transition metal oxides (TMOs) have attracted significant interest in recent years because of the rich physical properties induced by the interplay between spin-orbit coupling, bandwidth and on-site Coulomb repulsion. In Sr2IrO4, this interplay opens a gap near the Fermi energy and stabilizes a Jeff=1/2 spin-orbital entangled insulating state at low temperatures. Whether this metal-insulating transition (MIT) is Mott-type (electronic-correlation driven) or Slater-type (magnetic-order driven) has been under intense debate. We address this issue via spatially resolved imaging and spec…
Recent studies demonstrated that there may appear different novel states in correlated systems close to localized-itinerant crossover. Especially favourable conditions for that are met in low-dimensional and in frustrated systems. In this paper I discuss on concrete examples some of such novel states. In particular, for some spinels and triangular systems there appears a "partial Mott transition", in which first some finite clusters (dimers, trimes, tetramers, heptamers) go over to the itinerant regime, and the real bulk Mott transition occurs only later. Also some other specific possibilities…
We study the electronic state of the doped Mott-Hubbard insulator within Dynamical Mean Field Theory. The evolution of the finite temperature spectral functions as a function of doping show large redistributions of spectral weight in both antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. In particular, a metallic antiferromagnetic state is obtained with a low frequency Slater-splitted quasiparticle peak coexisting with Hubbard bands. In the high temperature paramagnetic metallic phase, upon reducing doping, the system has a crossover through a ``bad metal'' state characterized by an anomalous shift o…
We report high resolution neutron scattering measurements on the triangular lattice Mott insulator Na$_x$CrO$_2$ ($x$=1) which has recently been shown to exhibit an unusually broad fluctuating crossover regime extending far below the onset of spin freezing ($T_c\sim$41K). Our results show that below some crossover temperature ($T\sim0.75T_c$) a small incommensuration develops which helps resolve the spin frustration and drives three-dimensional magnetic order supporting coherent spin wave modes. This incommensuration assisted dimensional crossover suggests that inter-layer frustration is respo…
Within the framework of a realistic multi-band p-d-model, we derived an effective Hamiltonian to describe the exchange interaction effects near the spin crossover in magnetic Mott-Hubbard insulators under pressure. It is shown that single-ion mechanism of spin crossover under change of the crystal field does not lead to a thermodynamic phase transition, however, at T = 0 a quantum phase transition appears. It has been found that the cooperativity leads to a modification of the quantum phase transition to a first-order phase transition and the appearance of metastable states of the system. The …
We propose a cold-atom setup which allows for a dimensional crossover from a two-dimensional quantum spin Hall insulating phase to a three-dimensional strong topological insulator by tuning the hopping between the layers. We further show that additional Hubbard onsite interactions can give rise to spin liquid-like phases: weak and strong topological Mott insulators. They represent the celebrated paradigm of a quantum state of matter which merely exists because of the interplay of the non-trivial topology of the band structure and strong interactions. While the theoretical understanding of this…
The interplay between quarter-filled and half-filled umklapp scattering has been examined by applying the renormalization group method to a one-dimensional quarter-filled electron system with dimerization, on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) repulsive interactions. The phase diagram on the U-V plane is obtained at absolute zero temperature where the Mott insulator (the charge ordered insulator) is found for smaller (larger) V. By choosing the moderate parameter in the region of Mott insulator, it is shown that the resistivity exhibits a crossover from behavior of quarter-filling to that of ha…
In an attempt to clarify the nature of the crossover from a Peierls band insulator to a Mott Hubbard insulator, we analyze ground-state and spectral properties of the one-dimensional half-filled Holstein Hubbard model using exact diagonalization techniques.
The infrared response of the organic conductor (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ and the Mott insulator (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ are investigated as a function of temperature and pressure and for the polarization parallel and perpendicular to the molecular stacks. By applying external pressure on (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$, the Mott gap rapidly diminishes until the deconfinement transition occurs when the gap energy is approximately twice the interchain transfer integral. In its deconfined state (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ exhibits a crossover from a quasi-one-dimensional to a higher-dimensional metal upon reducing the temperature. Fo…
High-quality epitaxial SrVO3 (SVO) thin films of various thicknesses were grown on (001)-oriented LSAT substrates by pulsed electron-beam deposition technique. Thick SVO films (~25 nm) exhibited metallic behavior with the electrical resistivity following the T2 law corresponding to a Fermi liquid system. We observed a temperature driven metal-insulator transition (MIT) in SVO ultrathin films with thicknesses below 6.5 nm, the transition temperature TMIT was found to be at 50 K for the 6.5 nm film, 120 K for the 5.7 nm film and 205 K for the 3 nm film. The emergence of the observed MIT can be a…
As a hallmark of electronic correlation, spin-charge interplay underlies many emergent phenomena in doped Mott insulators, such as high-temperature superconductivity, whereas the half-filled parent state is usually electronically frozen with an antiferromagnetic order that resists external control. We report on the observation of a new positive magnetoresistance that probes the staggered susceptibility of a pseudospin-half square-lattice Mott insulator built as an artificial SrIrO3/SrTiO3 superlattice. Its size is particularly large in the high-temperature insulating paramagnetic phase near th…
We present genuine bulk Ir 5d jeff states of layered perovskite iridates obtained by hard-x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) with s- and p-polarized lights. HAXPES spectra of Sr2IrO4 and Ba2IrO4 are well reproduced by the quasi-particle densities of states calculated by the local density approximation with dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). It is demonstrated that the insulating nature of the iridates is triggered by antiferromagnetic correlation (Slater type) combined with electron correlation (Mott type). The extremely-low-energy bulk-sensitive photoemission spectroscopy reveals …
We describe a low-temperature approach to the two-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model which allows us to study both antiferromagnetism and single-particle properties. This approach ignores amplitude fluctuations of the antiferromagnetic (AF) order parameter and is valid below a crossover temperature $T_X$ which marks the onset of AF short-range order. Directional fluctuations (spin waves) are described by a non-linear sigma model (NL$σ$M) that we derive from the Hubbard model. At zero temperature and weak coupling, our results are typical of a Slater antiferromagnet. The AF gap is exponentia…
Many metals display resistivity saturation - a substantial decrease in the slope of the resistivity as a function of temperature, that occurs when the electron scattering rate $τ^{-1}$ becomes comparable to the Fermi energy $E_F/\hbar$ (the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit). At such temperatures, the usual description of a metal in terms of ballistically propagating quasiparticles is no longer valid. We present a tractable model of a large $N$ number of electronic bands coupled to $N^2$ optical phonon modes, which displays a crossover behavior in the resistivity at temperatures where $τ^{-1}\sim E_F/\hb…
The pairing of interacting fermions leading to superfluidity has two limiting regimes: the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) scheme for weakly interacting degenerate fermions and the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of bosonic pairs of strongly interacting fermions. While the superconductivity that emerges in most metallic systems is the BCS-like electron pairing, strongly correlated electrons with poor Fermi liquidity can condense into the unconventional BEC-like pairs. Quantum spin liquids harbor extraordinary spin correlation free from order and the superconductivity that possibly emerges by …
For iridates with large spatially extended 5d orbitals, it may be anticipated that distant neighbor interactions would play a crucial role in their ground state properties. From this perspective, we investigate the magnetic structure of Sr2IrO4 by including interactions beyond first and second neighbors, via super cell modeling. Adopting to first-principles scalar relativistic methods, it is found that the minimum in total energy among various magnetic structures correspond to a up-up-down-down type antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ir ions for which the magnitude of the electronic gap, that o…
We study how the electron hopping reduces the Mott-Hubbard band gap in the limit of a large Coulomb interaction U and as a function of the orbital degeneracy N. The results support the conclusion that the hopping contribution grows as roughly \sqrt{N}W, where W is the one-particle band width, but in certain models a crossover to a \sim NW behavior is found for a sufficiently large N.
We study the effects of electron-electron interactions and hole doping on the electronic structure of Cu-doped NaFeAs using the density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) method. In particular, we employ an effective multi-orbital Hubbard model with a realistic bandstructure of NaFeAs in which Cu-doping was modeled within a rigid band approximation and compute the evolution of the spectral properties, orbital-dependent electronic mass renormalizations, and magnetic properties of NaFeAs upon doping with Cu. In addition, we perform fully charge self-consistent DFT+DMFT…
We study the equilibrium dynamics of magnetic moments in the Mott insulating phase of the Hubbard model on the square and triangular lattice. We rewrite the Hubbard interaction in terms of an auxiliary vector field and use a recently developed Langevin scheme to study its dynamics. A thermal `noise', derivable approximately from the Keldysh formalism, allows us to study the effect of finite temperature. At strong coupling, $U \gg t$, where $U$ is the local repulsion and $t$ the nearest neighbour hopping, our results reproduce the well known dynamics of the nearest neighbour Heisenberg model wi…
The properties of a phase with large correlation length can be strongly influenced by the underlying normal phase. We illustrate this by studying the half-filled two-dimensional Hubbard model using cellular dynamical mean-field theory with continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo. Sharp crossovers in the mechanism that favors antiferromagnetic correlations and in the corresponding local density of states are observed. These crossovers occur at values of the interaction strength $U$ and temperature $T$ that are controlled by the underlying normal-state Mott transition.
We study the interaction driven localization transition, which a recent experiment in Ga_{1-x}Mn_xAs As has shown to come along with multifractal behavior of the local density of states (LDoS) and the intriguing persistence of critical correlations close to the Fermi level. We show that the bulk of these phenomena can be understood within a Hartree-Fock treatment of disordered, Coulomb-interacting spinless fermions. A scaling analysis of the LDoS correlation demonstrates multifractality with correlation dimension d_2=1.57, which is significantly larger than at a non-interacting Anderson transi…
We show how a lightly doped Mott insulator has hugely enhanced electronic thermal transport at low temperature. It displays universal behavior independent of the interaction strength when the carriers can be treated as nondegenerate fermions and a nonuniversal "crossover" region where the Lorenz number grows to large values, while still maintaining a large thermoelectric figure-of-merit. The electron dynamics are described by the Falicov-Kimball model which is solved for arbitrary large on-site correlation with a dynamical mean-field theory algorithm on a Bethe lattice. We show how these resul…
