Today, deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have demonstrated state of the art performance for supervised medical image segmentation, across various imaging modalities and tasks. Despite early success, segmentation networks may still generate anatomically aberrant segmentations, with holes or inaccuracies near the object boundaries. To mitigate this effect, recent research works have focused on incorporating spatial information or prior knowledge to enforce anatomically plausible segmentation. If the integration of prior knowledge in image segmentation is not a new topic in classical opti…

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death among women worldwide. In clinical routine, automatic breast ultrasound (BUS) image segmentation is very challenging and essential for cancer diagnosis and treatment planning. Many BUS segmentation approaches have been studied in the last two decades, and have been proved to be effective on private datasets. Currently, the advancement of BUS image segmentation seems to meet its bottleneck. The improvement of the performance is increasingly challenging, and only few new approaches were published in the last several years. It is the time…
Object detection or localization is an incremental step in progression from coarse to fine digital image inference. It not only provides the classes of the image objects, but also provides the location of the image objects which have been classified. The location is given in the form of bounding boxes or centroids. Semantic segmentation gives fine inference by predicting labels for every pixel in the input image. Each pixel is labelled according to the object class within which it is enclosed. Furthering this evolution, instance segmentation gives different labels for separate instances of obj…

Semantic segmentation plays a fundamental role in a broad variety of computer vision applications, providing key information for the global understanding of an image. Yet, the state-of-the-art models rely on large amount of annotated samples, which are more expensive to obtain than in tasks such as image classification. Since unlabelled data is instead significantly cheaper to obtain, it is not surprising that Unsupervised Domain Adaptation reached a broad success within the semantic segmentation community. This survey is an effort to summarize five years of this incredibly rapidly growing fie…

From the autonomous car driving to medical diagnosis, the requirement of the task of image segmentation is everywhere. Segmentation of an image is one of the indispensable tasks in computer vision. This task is comparatively complicated than other vision tasks as it needs low-level spatial information. Basically, image segmentation can be of two types: semantic segmentation and instance segmentation. The combined version of these two basic tasks is known as panoptic segmentation. In the recent era, the success of deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) has influenced the field of segmentation…

We extend Deep Deterministic Uncertainty (DDU), a method for uncertainty estimation using feature space densities, to semantic segmentation. DDU enables quantifying and disentangling epistemic and aleatoric uncertainty in a single forward pass through the model. We study the similarity of feature representations of pixels at different locations for the same class and conclude that it is feasible to apply DDU location independently, which leads to a significant reduction in memory consumption compared to pixel dependent DDU. Using the DeepLab-v3+ architecture on Pascal VOC 2012, we show that DD…
Vegetation is a relevant feature in the urban scenery and its awareness can be measured in an image by the Green View Index (GVI). Previous approaches to estimate the GVI were based upon heuristics image processing approaches and recently by deep learning networks (DLN). By leveraging some recent DLN architectures tuned to the image segmentation problem and exploiting a weighting strategy in the loss function (LF) we improved previously reported results in similar datasets.

Semantic segmentation is a challenging task since it requires excessively more low-level spatial information of the image compared to other computer vision problems. The accuracy of pixel-level classification can be affected by many factors, such as imaging limitations and the ambiguity of object boundaries in an image. Conventional methods exploit three-channel RGB images captured in the visible spectrum with deep neural networks (DNN). Thermal images can significantly contribute during the segmentation since thermal imaging cameras are capable of capturing details despite the weather and ill…

The extent to which the arbitrarily selected L2 regularization hyperparameter value affects the outcome of semantic segmentation with deep learning is demonstrated. Demonstrations rely on training U-net on small LGE-MRI datasets using the arbitrarily selected L2 regularization values. The remaining hyperparameters are to be manually adjusted or tuned only when 10 % of all epochs are reached before the training validation accuracy reaches 90%. Semantic segmentation with deep learning outcomes are objectively and subjectively evaluated against the manual ground truth segmentation.

Recent state-of-the-art image segmentation algorithms are mostly based on deep neural networks, thanks to their high performance and fast computation time. However, these methods are usually trained in a supervised manner, which requires large number of high quality ground-truth segmentation masks. On the other hand, classical image segmentation approaches such as level-set methods are formulated in a self-supervised manner by minimizing energy functions such as Mumford-Shah functional, so they are still useful to help generation of segmentation masks without labels. Unfortunately, these algor…

We propose a new method for semantic instance segmentation, by first computing how likely two pixels are to belong to the same object, and then by grouping similar pixels together. Our similarity metric is based on a deep, fully convolutional embedding model. Our grouping method is based on selecting all points that are sufficiently similar to a set of "seed points", chosen from a deep, fully convolutional scoring model. We show competitive results on the Pascal VOC instance segmentation benchmark.
