We propose a brane-world setup based on gauge/gravity duality that permits the simultaneous realisation of self-tuning of the cosmological constant and a stabilisation of the electroweak hierarchy. The Standard Model dynamics including the Higgs sector is confined to a flat 4-dimensional brane, embedded in a 5-dimensional bulk whose dynamics is governed by Einstein-dilaton-axion gravity. The inclusion of a dynamical bulk axion is new compared to previous implementations of the self-tuning mechanism. Because of the presence of the axion, the model generically exhibits a multitude of static solutions, with different values for the equilibrium position for the brane. Under mild assumptions regarding the dependence of brane parameters on bulk fields, a number of these solutions exhibit electroweak symmetry breaking with a hierarchically small Higgs mass as compared to the cutoff-scale of the brane theory. The realisation of self-tuning of the cosmological constant is generic and as efficient as in previous constructions without a bulk axion. Vacua with a hierarchically small Higgs mass can sometimes be found, regardless of whether the brane theory depends explicitly on the bulk axion. Because it is expected on general principles that the brane action will depend on the axion, the generation of solutions with a large hierarchy is a robust feature.
We present a supersymmetric version of a two-field relaxion model that naturalizes tuned versions of supersymmetry. This arises from a relaxion mechanism that does not depend on QCD dynamics and where the relaxion potential barrier height is controlled by a second axion-like field. During the cosmological evolution, the relaxion rolls with a nonzero value that breaks supersymmetry and scans the soft supersymmetric mass terms. Electroweak symmetry is broken after the soft masses become of order the supersymmetric Higgs mass term and causes the relaxion to stop rolling for superpartner masses up…
We study whether the relaxion mechanism solves the Higgs hierarchy problem against a high scale inflation or a high reheating temperature. To accomplish the mechanism, we consider the scenario that the Higgs vacuum expectation value is determined after inflation. We take into account the effects of the Hubble induced mass and thermal one in the dynamics of the relaxion.
We consider the recently proposed cosmological relaxation mechanism where the hierarchy problem is ameliorated, and the electroweak scale is dynamically selected by a slowly rolling axion field. We argue that, in its simplest form, the construction breaks a gauge symmetry that always exists for pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons (in particular the axion). The small parameter in the relaxion model is therefore not technically natural as it breaks a gauge symmetry rather than global symmetries only. The consistency of the theory generically implies that the cutoff must lie around the electroweak scal…
We probe the cosmological consequences of a recently proposed class of solutions to the cosmological constant problem. In these models, the universe undergoes a long period of inflation followed by a contraction and a bounce that sets the stage for the hot big bang era. A requirement of any successful early universe model is that it must reproduce the observed scale-invariant density perturbations at CMB scales. While these class of models involve a long period of inflation, the inflationary Hubble scale during their observationally relevant stages is at or below the current Hubble scale, rend…
The cosmological relaxation of the electroweak scale has been proposed as a mechanism to address the hierarchy problem of the Standard Model. A field, the relaxion, rolls down its potential and, in doing so, scans the squared mass parameter of the Higgs, relaxing it to a parametrically small value. In this work, we promote the relaxion to an inflaton. We couple it to Abelian gauge bosons, thereby introducing the necessary dissipation mechanism which slows down the field in the last stages. We describe a novel reheating mechanism, which relies on the gauge-boson production leading to strong ele…
It is argued that the entropy bound places an upper limit of about 1 TeV on the temperature of the last reheating era in the early Universe. Implications for inflation and non-standard paradigms for beyond the standard model of hot cosmology are studied.
We study the evolution of holographic complexity in various AdS/CFT models containing cosmological crunch singularities. We find that a notion of complexity measured by extremal bulk volumes tends to decrease as the singularity is approached in CFT time, suggesting that the corresponding quantum states have simpler entanglement structure at the singularity.
We review recent results on the cosmological models based on the holographic principle which were proposed to explain the most of the problems occurring in the Standard Cosmological Model. It is shown that these models naturally solve the cosmological constant problem and coincidence problem. Well-documented cosmic acceleration at the present time was analyzed in the light of holographic dark energy. In particular, we showed that in the model of Universe consisting of dark matter interacting with a scalar field on the agegraphic background can explain the transient acceleration. We also study …
We investigate the role of the cosmological constant in the holographic description of a radiation-dominated universe $C_2/R^4$ with a positive cosmological constant $Λ$. In order to understand the nature of cosmological term, we first study the newtonian cosmology. Here we find two aspects of the cosmological term: entropy ($Λ\to S_{\rm Λ}$) and energy ($Λ\to E_{\rm Λ}$). Also we solve the Friedmann equation parametrically to obtain another role. In the presence of the cosmological constant, the solutions are described by the Weierstrass elliptic functions on torus and have modular properties…
We study the structure of entanglement wedges in the Kasner-AdS geometry, which provides an example of AdS/CFT engineered cosmological singularity. We investigate the specific limitations of causal reconstruction methods, imposed by the presence of the cosmological singularities, and we show the supremacy of modular reconstruction. This model provides an example where modular reconstruction based on a proper operator subalgebra is more powerful than the strongest possible causal reconstruction, based on the complete operator algebra.
We propose an infrared cut-off for the holographic density which incorporates among others a constant term, that produces the effect of the cosmological constant, improving the results of previously considered holographic models based on local quantities. The inclusion of constant term is interpreted as a natural first approximation for the infrared cutoff which is associated with the vacuum energy, and the additional terms guarantee an appropriate evolutionary scenario that fits the astrophysical observations. Cosmological constraints on the model have been studied using the observational dat…
We present the holographic predictions for cosmological 3-point correlators, involving both scalar and tensor modes, for a universe which started in a non-geometric holographic phase. Holographic formulae relate the cosmological 3-point functions to stress tensor correlation functions of a holographically dual three-dimensional non-gravitational QFT. We compute these correlators at 1-loop order for a theory containing massless scalars, fermions and gauge fields, and present an extensive analysis of the constraints due to Ward identities showing that they uniquely determine the correlators up t…
We introduce the brane-bulk interaction to discuss a limitation of the cosmological Cardy-Verlinde formula which is useful for the holographic description of brane cosmology. In the presence of the brane-bulk interaction, we cannot find the entropy representation of the first Friedmann equation (the cosmological Cardy-Verlinde formula). In the absence of the interaction, the cosmological Cardy-Verlinde formula is established even for the time-dependent charged AdS background. Hence, if there exists a dynamic exchange of energy between the brane and the bulk (that is, if $\tilde T^t~_y \not=0$)…
We present a general analytical treatment of cosmological models commanded by three interactive fluids with arbitrary barotropic indexes. The variable equations of state case are applicable to universes with quintessences, k essences and holographic fluids and we pay some attention to the holographic case. We also propose the need to extend the functional forms of the holographic energy densities that are usual in the literature in the face of the incompatibility presented by them when special interactions are used.
A dynamical aspect of quantum gravity on de Sitter spacetime is investigated by holography or the dS/CFT correspondence. We show that de Sitter spacetime emerges from a free Sp(N) vector model by complexifying the ghost fields and flowing them in parallel to the imaginary axis. We confirm that the emergence of de Sitter spacetime is ensured by conformal symmetry. We also compute the quantum corrections to the cosmological constant up to the next-to-leading order of the 1/N expansion in a proposed holographic approach. As a result the sub-leading corrections have the opposite sign to the classi…
The holographic principle provides a deep insight into quantum gravity and resolves the fine-tuning crisis concerning the cosmological constant. Holographic dark energy introduces new ultra-violet (UV) and infra-red (IR) cutoffs into quantum gravity which are necessarily strongly related. The equation of state for dark energy $ω= p/ρ$ is discussed from the holographic point of view. The phantom option of $ω< -1$ is resurrected, as in an earlier cyclic cosmology. Such a cyclic model can, however, equally use the cosmological constant with $ω= -1$.
A general holographic relation between UV and IR cutoff of an effective field theory is proposed. Taking the IR cutoff relevant to the dark energy as the Hubble scale, we find that the cosmological constant is highly suppressed by a numerical factor and the fine tuning problem seems alleviative. We also use different IR cutoffs to study the case in which the universe is composed of matter and dark energy.
In this paper, we obtain a holographic model of dark energy using the fluid/gravity duality. This model will be dual to a higher dimensional Schwarzschild black hole, and we would use fluid/gravity duality to relate to the parameters of this black hole to such a cosmological model. We will also analyze the thermodynamics of such a solution, and discuss the stability model. Finally, we use cosmological data to constraint the parametric space of this dark energy model. Thus, we will use observational data to perform cosmography for this holographic model based on fluid/gravity duality.
Motivated by the recent observations for the cosmic acceleration and the suitable evolution of the Universe provided an interaction (decay of dark energy to matter) is incorporated in a cosmological model, we study the cosmological evolution of the Interacting Holographic Dark Energy scenario. Critical points are derived and their corresponding cosmological models are presented. The dynamical character of these models is revealed.
We show the kinematic equivalence between cosmological models driven by Dirac-Born-Infeld fields $ϕ$ with constant proper velocity of the brane and exponential potential $V=V_0e^{-Bϕ}$ and interactive cosmological systems with Modified Holographic Ricci type fluids as dark energy in flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies.
For type IIB supergravity with a running axio-dilaton, we construct bulk solutions which admit a cosmological background metric of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker type. These solutions include both a dark radiation term in the bulk as well as a four-dimensional (boundary) cosmological constant, while gravity at the boundary remains non-dynamical. We holographically calculate the stress-energy tensor, showing that it consists of two contributions: The first one, generated by the dark radiation term, leads to the thermal fluid of N = 4 SYM theory, while the second, the conformal anomaly, originates f…
Gravitational holography is argued to render the cosmological constant stable against divergent quantum corrections. This provides a technically natural solution to the cosmological constant problem. Evidence for quantum stability of the cosmological constant is illustrated in a number of examples including, bulk descriptions in terms of delocalized degrees of freedom, boundary screen descriptions on stretched horizons, and non-supersymmetric conformal field theories as dual descriptions of anti-de Sitter space. In an expanding universe, holographic quantum contributions to the stress-energy t…
We review a construction of holographic geometries dual to N=4 SYM theory on a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background and in the presence or absence of a gluon condensate and instanton density. We find the most general solution with arbitrary scale factor and show that it is diffeomorphic to topological black holes. We introduce a time-dependent boundary cosmological constant λ(t) and show energy-momentum conservation in this background. For constant λ, the deconfinement properties of the temporal Wilson loop are analysed. In most cases the Wilson loop confines throughout cosmological evolution…
We point out that for a large class of universes, holography implies that the most probable value of the cosmological constant is zero. In four spacetime dimensions, the probability distribution takes the Baum-Hawking form, $dP\sim\exp(cM_p^2/Λ)dΛ$.
The cosmic holographic principle suggested by Fischler and Susskind has been examined in (2+1)-dimensional cosmological models. Analogously to the (3+1)-dimensional counterpart, the holographic principle is satisfied in all flat and open universes. For (2+1)-dimensional closed universes the holographic principle cannot be realized in general. The principle cannot be maintained, neither introducing negative pressure matter nor matter with highly unconventional equation of state.
Time variable cosmological constant (TVCC) of holographic origin with interaction in Brans-Dicke theory is discussed in this paper. We investigate some characters for this model, and show the evolutions of deceleration parameter and equation of state (EOS) for dark energy. It is shown that in this scenario an accelerating universe can be obtained and the evolution of EOS for dark energy can cross over the boundary of phantom divide. In addition, a geometrical diagnostic method, jerk parameter is applied to this model to distinguish it with cosmological constant.
We propose a holographic map between Einstein gravity coupled to matter in a de Sitter background and large N quantum mechanics of a system of spins. Holography maps a spin model with a finite dimensional Hilbert space defined on a version of the stretched horizon into bulk gravitational dynamics. The full Hamiltonian of the spin model contains a non-local piece which generates chaotic dynamics, widely conjectured to be a necessary part of quantum gravity, and a local piece which recovers the perturbative spectrum in the bulk.
It is shown that the first law of thermodynamics and the holographic principle applied to an arbitrary large cosmic causal horizon naturally demand the zero cosmological constant and non-zero dynamical dark energy in the form of the holographic dark energy. Semiclassical analysis shows that the holographic dark energy has a parameter $d=1$ and an equation of state comparable to current observational data, if the entropy of the horizon saturates the Bekenstein-Hawking bound. This result indicates that quantum field theory should be modified at large scale to explain dark energy. The relations a…
We reconsider the options for cosmological holography. We suggest that a global and time--symmetric version of the Fischler-Susskind bound is the most natural generalization of the holographic bound encountered in AdS and De Sitter space. A consistent discussion of cosmological holography seems to imply an understanding of the notion of ``number of degrees of freedom'' that deviates from its simple definition as the entropy of the current state. The introduction of a more adequate notion of degree of freedom makes the suggested variation of the Fischler-Susskind bound look like a stringent and…
We consider general black hole solutions in five-dimensional spacetime in the presence of a negative cosmological constant. We obtain a cosmological evolution via the gravity/gauge theory duality (holography) by defining appropriate boundary conditions on a four-dimensional boundary hypersurface. The standard counterterms are shown to renormalize the bare parameters of the system (the four-dimensional Newton's constant and cosmological constant). We discuss the thermodynamics of cosmological evolution and present various examples. The standard brane-world scenarios are shown to be special case…
We introduce a duality relation between two distinct branes, a cosmological brane with macroscopic matter and a holographic brane with microscopic gauge fields. Using brane-world cosmology with a single brane in a 5-dimensional AdS5 background, we find an explicit time-dependent holographic correspondence between the bulk metric surrounding the cosmological brane and the N=4 gauge field theory living on the boundary of the Z2-symmetric mirror bulk, identified with the holographic brane. We then relate the cosmic acceleration on the cosmological brane to the conformal anomaly of the gauge theor…
We rediscuss the main Cosmological Problems as illusions originated from our ignorance of the hidden information holographically stored in {\it vacuo}. The Cosmological vacuum state is full of a large number of dynamical quantum hairs, dubbed {\it hairons}, which dominate the Cosmological Entropy. We elaborate on the Cosmological Constant (CC) problem, in both the dynamical and time-constant possibilities. We show that all dangerous quantum mixings between the CC and the Planck energy scales are exponentially suppressed as an entropic collective effect of the hairon environment. As a consequen…
We propose a brane-world setup based on gauge/gravity duality in which the four-dimensional cosmological constant is set to zero by a dynamical self-adjustment mechanism. The bulk contains Einstein gravity and a scalar field. We study holographic RG flow solutions, with the standard model brane separating an infinite volume UV region and an IR region of finite volume. For generic values of the brane vacuum energy, regular solutions exist such that the four-dimensional brane is flat. Its position in the bulk is determined dynamically by the junction conditions. Analysis of linear fluctuations s…
In this paper, we study the cosmological analysis of the modified holographic Ricci dark energy model and reconstruct different scalar field models in the context of Chern-Simon modified gravity. We investigate the deceleration parameter, which shows that the universe is in the accelerating expansion phase. The equation of state parameter in this case also favors the fact that dark energy is the dominant component of universe which is responsible for the accelerated expansion. A number of scalar fields, such as: quintessence, tachyon, K-essence and dilaton models are reconstructed using modifi…
Within the holographic cosmology paradigm, specifically the model of McFadden and Skenderis, but more generally than that, the cosmological constant is found to naturally flow from a large value, to a small value, which can even be as low as the needed $\sim 10^{-120}$ times the original, along with the dual RG flow. Within this context then, the cosmological constant problem is mapped to a simple quantum field theory property, even though the exact mechanism for it in gravity is still obscure. I consider several examples of gravity duals to explain the mechanism.
The cosmological perturbation theory is revisited from the holographic point of view. In the case of the single brane model, it turns out that the AdS/CFT correspondence plays an important role. In the case of the two-brane model, it is shown that the effective equations of motion becomes the quasi-scalar-tensor gravity. It is also demonstrated that the radion anisotropy gives the CMB fluctuations through the Sachs-Wolfe effect.
We study the time development of strongly coupled ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang Mills (SYM) theory on cosmological Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) backgrounds via the AdS/CFT correspondence. We implement the cosmological background as a boundary metric fulfilling the Friedmann equation with a four-dimensional cosmological constant and a dark radiation term. We analyze the dual bulk solution of the type IIB supergravity and find that the time-dependence of the FRW background strongly influences the dynamical properties of the SYM theory. We in particular find a phase transition between a co…
We use the Markov ChainMonte Carlo method to investigate global constraints on the generalized holographic (GH) dark energy with flat and non-flat universe from the current observed data: the Union2 dataset of type supernovae Ia (SNIa), high-redshift Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), the observational Hubble data (OHD), the cluster X-ray gas mass fraction, the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO), and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. The most stringent constraints on the GH model parameter are obtained. In addition, it is found that the equation of state for this generalized holographic dark en…
We study cosmological applications of the holographic energy density. Considering the holographic energy density as a dynamical cosmological constant, we need the Brans-Dicke theory as a dynamical framework instead of general relativity. In this case we use the Bianchi identity as a consistency relation to obtain physical solutions. It is shown that the future event horizon as the IR cutoff provides the dark energy in the Brans-Dicke theory. Furthermore the role of the Brans-Dicke scalar is clarified in the dark energy-dominated universe by calculating its equation of state.
We study the soft limits of cosmological correlators from a holographic perspective, showing how the inflationary consistency relations arise from the diffeomorphism invariance of the dual quantum field theory. Starting from the corresponding Ward identity, by taking moments we derive the leading and subleading behaviour of the stress tensor 3-point function in the limit as one momentum vanishes. These results are non-perturbative and valid in quantum field theories of a very general nature. Exploiting the known mapping of correlators in the dual quantum field theory to those of the cosmology,…
Certain null singularities in ten dimensional supergravity have natural holographic duals in terms of Matrix Theory and generalizations of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In many situations the holographic duals appear to be well defined in regions where the supergravity develops singularities. We describe some recent progress in this area.
We investigate canonical, phantom and quintom models, with the various fields being non-minimally coupled to gravity, in the framework of holographic dark energy. We classify them and we discuss their cosmological implications. In particular, we examine the present value of the dark energy equation-of-state parameter and the crossing through the phantom divide, and we extract the conditions for a future cosmological singularity. The combined scenarios are in agreement with observations and reveal interesting cosmological behaviors.
We compute the correlation functions of 3 and 4 stress energy tensors $(T)$ in D=3 in free field theories of scalars, abelian gauge fields, and fermions, which are relevant in the analysis of cosmological non-gaussianities. These correlators appear in the holographic expressions of the scalar and tensor perturbations derived for holographic cosmological models. The result is simply adapted to describe the leading contributions in the gauge coupling to the same correlators also for a non abelian SU(N) gauge theory. In the case of the bispectrum, our results are mapped and shown to be in full ag…
We investigate the non-Gaussianity of primordial cosmological perturbations using holographic methods. In particular, we derive holographic formulae that relate all cosmological 3-point correlation functions, including both scalar and tensor perturbations, to stress-energy correlation functions of a holographically dual three-dimensional quantum field theory. These results apply to general single scalar inflationary universes that at late times approach either de Sitter spacetime or accelerating power-law cosmologies. We further show that in Einstein gravity all 3-point functions involving ten…
We explore the program of the construction of the dual bulk theory in the flow equation approach. We compute the vacuum expectation value of the Einstein operator at the next to leading order in the 1/n expansion using a free O(n) vector model. We interpret the next to leading correction as the quantum correction to the cosmological constant of the AdS space. We finally comment on how to generalize this computation to matrix elements of the Einstein operator for excited states.
The observed acceleration of the present universe is shown to be well explained by the holographic dark energy characterized by the total comoving horizon of the universe ($η$HDE). It is of interest to notice that the very large primordial part of the comoving horizon generated by the inflation of early universe makes the $η$HDE behave like a cosmological constant. As a consequence, both the fine-tuning problem and the coincidence problem can reasonably be understood with the inflationary universe and holographical principle. We present a systematic analysis and obtain a consistent cosmologica…
Recently, the holographic aspects of asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes have generated substantial literary interest. The plot continues in this paper, as we investigate a certain class of dilatonically deformed ``topological'' de Sitter solutions (which were introduced in hep-th/0110234). Although such solutions possess a detrimental cosmological singularity, their interpretation from a holographic perspective remains somewhat unclear. The current focus is on the associated generalized $C$-functions, which are shown to maintain their usual monotonicity properties in spite of this exotic fram…
According to the AdS/CFT correspondence, the ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory has been studied by solving the dual supergravity. In solving the bulk Einstein equation, we find that it could be related to the 4D Friedmann equation, which is solved by using the cosmological constant and the energy density of the matters on the boundary, and they are dynamically decoupled from the SYM theory. We call this combination of the bulk Einstein equations and the 4D Friedmann equation as holographic Friedmann equations (HFE). Solving the HFE, it is shown how the 4D decoupled matters an…
We present a non-supersymmetric theory with a naturally light dilaton. It is based on a 5D holographic description of a conformal theory perturbed by a close-to-marginal operator of dimension 4-epsilon, which develops a condensate. As long as the dimension of the perturbing operator remains very close to marginal (even for large couplings) a stable minimum at hierarchically small scales is achieved, where the dilaton mass squared is suppressed by epsilon. At the same time the cosmological constant in this sector is also suppressed by epsilon, and thus parametrically smaller than in a broken SU…
In this paper, we have considered a cosmological model with the non--minimal kinetic coupling terms and investigated its cosmological implications with respect to the logarithmic entropy-- corrected holographic dark energy (LECHDE). The correspondence between LECHDE in flat FRW cosmology and the phantom dark energy model with the aim to interpret the current universe acceleration is also examined.
To gain insight in the quantum nature of cosmological singularities, we study anisotropic Kasner solutions in gauge/gravity duality. The dual description of the bulk evolution towards the singularity involves N = 4 super Yang-Mills on the expanding branch of deformed de Sitter space and is well defined. We compute two-point correlators of Yang-Mills operators of large dimensions using spacelike geodesics anchored on the boundary. The correlators show a strong signature of the singularity around horizon scales and decay at large boundary separation at different rates in different directions. Mo…
The holographic bound states that the entropy in a region cannot exceed one quarter of the area (in Planck units) of the bounding surface. A version of the holographic principle that can be applied to cosmological spacetimes has recently been given by Fischler and Susskind. This version can be shown to fail in closed spacetimes and they concluded that the holographic bound may rule out such universes. In this paper I give a modified definition of the holographic bound that holds in a large class of closed universes. Fischler and Susskind also showed that the dominant energy condition follows f…
We study the time evolution of entanglement entropy in expanding universes with various matters. To describe expanding universes holographically, we take into account a braneworld moving in an asymptotic AdS space involving a uniform $p$-brane gas. In the braneworld model, an observer living in the braneworld detects the bulk motion of the braneworld as an expanding universe. We show that the entanglement entropy of expanding universes increases by the volume law in the early time and by the area law in the late time. We further consider the cosmological horizon, which is the border of the vis…
In the present work we investigate the cosmological implications of holographic dark energy density in the Gauss-Bonnet framework. By formulating independently the two cosmological scenarios, and by enforcing their simultaneous validity, we show that there is a correspondence between the holographic dark energy scenario in flat universe and the phantom dark energy model in the framework of Gauss-Bonnet theory with a potential. This correspondence leads consistently to an accelerating universe. However, in general one has not full freedom of constructing independently the two cosmological scena…
A scale-dependent cosmological constant $Λ$ and the Newton constant G emerge naturally in quantum field theory in a curved space-time background leading to renormalization group running cosmologies. A scale-setting procedure is discussed in these cosmological models and the interpretation of the scale is emphasized. This setup introduces dark energy without invoking quintessence-like fields and can be applied to a variety of problems. The scale-dependent $Λ$ and G are also naturally incorporated into the generalized holographic dark energy model, and applied to different aspects of cosmology.
This article is dedicated to establishing a novel approach to the cosmological constant, in which it is treated as an eigenvalue of a certain Sturm--Liouville problem. The key to this approach lies in the proper formulation of physically relevant boundary conditions. Our suggestion in this regard is to utilize the ``holographic boundary condition'', under which the cosmological horizon can only bear a natural (i.e., non-fractional) number of bits of information. Under this framework, we study the general d-dimensional problem and derive the general formula for the discrete spectrum of a positi…
