Primal and dual algorithms are developed for solving the $n$-dimensional convex optimization problem of finding the Euclidean ball of minimum radius that covers $m$ given Euclidean balls, each with a given center and radius. Each algorithm is based on a directional search method in which a search path may be a ray or a two-dimensional conic section in $\mathbb{R}^n$. At each iteration, a search path is constructed by the intersection of bisectors of pairs of points, where the bisectors are either hyperplanes or $n$-dimensional hyperboloids. The optimal step size along each search path is determined explicitly.

Dearing and Zeck presented a dual algorithm for the problem of the minimum covering ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Each iteration of their algorithm has a computational complexity of at least $\mathcal O(n^3)$. In this paper we propose a modification to their algorithm that, together with an implementation that uses updates to the QR factorization of a suitable matrix, achieves a $\mathcal O(n^2)$ iteration.
We study preconditioned proximal point methods for a class of saddle point problems, where the preconditioner decouples the overall proximal point method into an alternating primal--dual method. This is akin to the Chambolle--Pock method or the ADMM. In our work, we replace the squared distance in the dual step by a barrier function on a symmetric cone, while using a standard (Euclidean) proximal step for the primal variable. We show that under non-degeneracy and simple linear constraints, such a hybrid primal--dual algorithm can achieve linear convergence on originally strongly convex problem…

In this paper, we propose a novel primal-dual inexact gradient projection method for nonlinear optimization problems with convex-set constraint. This method only needs inexact computation of the projections onto the convex set for each iteration, consequently reducing the computational cost for projections per iteration. This feature is attractive especially for solving problems where the projections are computationally not easy to calculate. Global convergence guarantee and O(1/k) ergodic convergence rate of the optimality residual are provided under loose assumptions. We apply our proposed s…
We develop a novel stochastic primal dual splitting method with Bregman distances for solving a structured composite problems involving infimal convolutions in non-Euclidean spaces. The sublinear convergence in expectation of the primal-dual gap is proved under mild conditions on stepsize for the general case. The linear convergence rate is obtained under additional condition like the strong convexity relative to Bregman functions.
We consider stochastic convex optimization problems with affine constraints and develop several methods using either primal or dual approach to solve it. In the primal case, we use a special penalization technique to make the initial problem more convenient for using optimization methods. We propose algorithms to solve it based on Similar Triangles Method with Inexact Proximal Step for the convex smooth and strongly convex smooth objective functions and methods based on Gradient Sliding algorithm to solve the same problems in the non-smooth case. We prove the convergence guarantees in the smoo…
In this paper, we propose a novel primal-dual proximal splitting algorithm (PD-PSA), named BALPA, for the composite optimization problem with equality constraints, where the loss function consists of a smooth term and a nonsmooth term composed with a linear mapping. In BALPA, the dual update is designed as a proximal point for a time-varying quadratic function, which balances the implementation of primal and dual update and retains the proximity-induced feature of classic PD-PSAs. In addition, by this balance, BALPA eliminates the inefficiency of classic PD-PSAs for composite optimization prob…
