Compared to sequential learning models, graph-based neural networks exhibit some excellent properties, such as ability capturing global information. In this paper, we investigate graph-based neural networks for text classification problem. A new framework TensorGCN (tensor graph convolutional networks), is presented for this task. A text graph tensor is firstly constructed to describe semantic, syntactic, and sequential contextual information. Then, two kinds of propagation learning perform on the text graph tensor. The first is intra-graph propagation used for aggregating information from neighborhood nodes in a single graph. The second is inter-graph propagation used for harmonizing heterogeneous information between graphs. Extensive experiments are conducted on benchmark datasets, and the results illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework. Our proposed TensorGCN presents an effective way to harmonize and integrate heterogeneous information from different kinds of graphs.
This paper presents the novel way combining the BERT embedding method and the graph convolutional neural network. This combination is employed to solve the text classification problem. Initially, we apply the BERT embedding method to the texts (in the BBC news dataset and the IMDB movie reviews dataset) in order to transform all the texts to numerical vector. Then, the graph convolutional neural network will be applied to these numerical vectors to classify these texts into their ap-propriate classes/labels. Experiments show that the performance of the graph convolutional neural network model …

The dominant approach for many NLP tasks are recurrent neural networks, in particular LSTMs, and convolutional neural networks. However, these architectures are rather shallow in comparison to the deep convolutional networks which have pushed the state-of-the-art in computer vision. We present a new architecture (VDCNN) for text processing which operates directly at the character level and uses only small convolutions and pooling operations. We are able to show that the performance of this model increases with depth: using up to 29 convolutional layers, we report improvements over the state-of…

We constructed several large-scale datasets to show that character-level convolutional networks could achieve state-of-the-art or competitive results. Comparisons are offered against traditional models such as bag of words, n-grams and their TFIDF variants, and deep learning models such as word-based ConvNets and recurrent neural networks.
Text classification is a fundamental task in natural language processing (NLP). Several recent studies show the success of deep learning on text processing. In this paper, new baseline models have been studied for text classification using CNN. In these models, documents are fed to the network as a three-dimensional tensor representation to provide sentence-level analysis. Applying such a method enables the models to take advantage of the positional information…
We provide a high fidelity deep learning algorithm (HyperSeg) for interactive video segmentation tasks using a convolutional network with context-aware skip connections, and compressed, hypercolumn image features combined with a convolutional tessellation procedure. This problem is purely a supervised problem that will involve the use of NLP techniques and conventional modeling methodologies through the use of the Multi-label Residual Convolutional Neural Network for text classification. We will explain the approach put in place to solve the problem of classified ads, the difficulties encountered and the experimental results.

We consider the problem of learning efficient and inductive graph convolutional networks for text classification with a large number of examples and features. Existing state-of-the-art graph embedding based methods such as predictive text embedding (PTE) and TextGCN have shortcomings in terms of predictive performance, scalability and inductive capability. To address these limitations, we propose a heterogeneous graph convolutional network (HeteGCN) modeling approach that unites the best aspects of PTE and TextGCN together. The main idea is to learn feature embeddings and derive document embed…
Text classification has been one of the major problems in natural language processing. With the advent of deep learning, convolutional neural network (CNN) has been a popular solution to this task. However, CNNs which were first proposed for images, face many crucial challenges in the context of text processing, namely in their elementary blocks: convolution filters and max pooling. These challenges have largely been overlooked by the most existing CNN models proposed for text classification. In this paper, we present an experimental study on the fundamental blocks of CNNs in text categorizati…
Recent approaches based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) have shown promising results for short-text classification. However, many short texts occur in sequences (e.g., sentences in a document or utterances in a dialog), and most existing ANN-based systems do not leverage the preceding short texts when classifying a subsequent one. In this work, we present a model based on recurrent neural networks and convolutional neural networks that incorporates the preceding short texts. Our model achieves state-of-the-art results on three different datasets for dialog act prediction.

We study in this work the importance of depth in convolutional models for text classification, either when character or word inputs are considered. We show on 5 standard text classification and sentiment analysis tasks that deep models indeed give better performances than shallow networks when the text input is represented as a sequence of characters. However, a simple shallow-and-wide network outperforms deep models such as DenseNet with word inputs. Our shallow word model further establishes new state-of-the-art performances on two datasets: Yelp Binary (95.9\%) and Yelp Full (64.9\%).

Text classification is an important and classical problem in natural language processing. There have been a number of studies that applied convolutional neural networks (convolution on regular grid, e.g., sequence) to classification. However, only a limited number of studies have explored the more flexible graph convolutional neural networks (convolution on non-grid, e.g., arbitrary graph) for the task. In this work, we propose to use graph convolutional networks for text classification. We build a single text graph for a corpus based on word co-occurrence and document word relations, then lea…

Sentiment analysis is attracting more and more attentions and has become a very hot research topic due to its potential applications in personalized recommendation, opinion mining, etc. Most of the existing methods are based on either textual or visual data and can not achieve satisfactory results, as it is very hard to extract sufficient information from only one single modality data. Inspired by the observation that there exists strong semantic correlation between visual and textual data in social medias, we propose an end-to-end deep fusion convolutional neural network to jointly learn text…
Deep learning models for natural language processing (NLP) are inherently complex and often viewed as black box in nature. The CNN model combines the word embedding through convolutional layers, filters them using max-pooling, and optimizes using a ReLU-DNN for classification. To get an overall self-interpretable model, the system of local linear models from the ReLU DNN are mapped back through the max-pool filter to the ap…

In recent years, deep learning-based models have significantly improved the Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. Specifically, the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), initially used for computer vision, has shown remarkable performance for text data in various NLP problems. Most of the existing CNN-based models use 1-dimensional convolving filters n-gram detectors), where each filter specialises in extracting n-grams features of a particular input word embedding. The input word embeddings, also called sentence matrix, is treated as a matrix where each row is a word vector. Thus, it allows …

The convolutional neural network (CNN) has been widely applied to process the industrial data based tensor input, which integrates data records of distributed industrial systems from the spatial, temporal, and system dynamics aspects. However, unlike images, information in the industrial data based tensor is not necessarily spatially ordered. Thus, directly applying CNN is ineffective. To tackle such issue, we propose a plug and play module, the Rubik's Cube Operator (RCO), to adaptively permutate the data organization of the industrial data based tensor to an optimal or suboptimal order of at…

We propose a novel framework to understand the text by converting sentences or articles into video-like 3-dimensional tensors. Each frame, corresponding to a slice of the tensor, is a word image that is rendered by the word's shape. The length of the tensor equals to the number of words in the sentence or article. Concretely, we impose a 3-dimensional convolutional kernel on the 3-dimensional text tensor. The first two…

More importantly, it is challenging for pre-trained models to obtain word-sequence embeddings that are universally good for all downstream tasks or for any new datasets. We propose a two-phased C…
